 14:1 ¶
And Samson{gr.Sampson} went down to Timnath{gr.Thamnatha}, and saw a woman in Timnath{gr.Thamnatha} of the daughters of the Philistines. |
|
 14:1 ¶
And Samsonº
went downºº
to Timnath,º
and sawºº
a womanº
in Timnathº
of the daughtersºº
of the Philistines.º |
 14:2
And he went up and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath{gr.Thamnatha} of the daughters of the Philistines{gr.Phylistines}; and now take her to me for a wife. |
|
 14:2
And he came up,ºº
and toldºº
his fatherº
and his mother,º
and said,ºº
I have seenºº
a womanº
in Timnathº
of the daughtersºº
of the Philistines:º
nowº
therefore getºº
her for me to wife.º |
 14:3
And his father and his mother said to him, Are there no daughters of thy brethren, and [is there not] a woman of all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson{gr.Sampson} said to his father, Take her for me, for she [is] right in my eyes. |
|
 14:3
Then his fatherº
and his motherº
saidºº
unto him, [Is there] neverº
a womanº
among the daughtersº
of thy brethren,º
or among allº
my people,º
thatº
thouº
goestºº
to takeºº
a wifeº
of the uncircumcisedº
Philistines?ºº
And Samsonº
saidºº
untoº
his father,º
Getºº
her for me; forº
sheº
pleaseth me well.ººº |
 14:4
And his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought to be revenged on the Philistines: and at that time the Philistines lorded it over Israel. |
|
 14:4
But his fatherº
and his motherº
knewºº
notº
thatº
itº
[was] of Yahweh,ºº
thatº
heº
soughtºº
an occasionº
against the Philistines:ºº
for at thatº
timeº
the Philistinesº
had dominionºº
over Israel.º |
 14:5 ¶
And Samson{gr.Sampson} and his father and his mother went down to Timnath{gr.Thamnatha}, and he came to the vineyard of Timnath{gr.Thamnatha}; and behold, a young lion roared in meeting him. |
|
 14:5 ¶
Then wentºº
Samsonº
down,ººº
and his fatherº
and his mother,º
to Timnath,º
and cameºº
toº
the vineyardsº
of Timnath:º
and, behold,º
a youngº
lionº
roaredºº
againstºº
him. |
 14:6
And the spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he crushed him as he would have crushed a kid of the goats, and there was nothing in his hands: and he told not his father and his mother what he had done. |
|
 14:6
And the Spiritº
of Yahwehº
came mightilyºº
uponº
him, and he rentºº
him as he would have rentºº
a kid,º
and [he had] nothingºº
in his hand:º
but he toldºº
notº
his fatherº
or his motherºº
whatº
he had done.ºº |
 14:7
And they went down and spoke to the woman, and she was pleasing in the eyes of Samson{gr.Sampson}. |
|
 14:7
And he went down,ºº
and talkedºº
with the woman;º
and she pleasedºº
Samsonº
well.ºººº |
 14:8 ¶
And after some time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion; and behold, a swarm of bees, and honey [were] in the mouth of the lion. |
|
 14:8 ¶
And after a timeºº
he returnedºº
to takeºº
her, and he turned asideºº
to seeººº
the carcaseº
of the lion:º
and, behold,º
[there was] a swarmº
of beesº
and honeyº
in the carcaseº
of the lion.º |
 14:9
And he took it into his hands, and went on eating, and he went to his father and his mother, and gave to them, and they did eat; but he told them not that he took the honey out of the mouth of the lion. |
|
 14:9
And he tookºº
thereof inº
his hands,º
and went onººº
eating,ºº
and cameºº
toº
his fatherº
and mother,º
and he gaveºº
them, and they did eat:ºº
but he toldºº
notº
them thatº
he had takenºº
the honeyº
out of the carcaseºº
of the lion.º |
 14:10 ¶
And his father went down to the woman, and Samson{gr.Sampson} made there a banquet for seven days, for so the young men are used to do. |
|
 14:10 ¶
So his fatherº
went downºº
untoº
the woman:º
and Samsonº
madeºº
thereº
a feast;º
forº
soº
used the young menº
to do.ºº |
 14:11
And it came to pass when they saw him, that they took thirty guests, and they were with him. |
|
 14:11
And it came to pass,º
when they sawºº
him, that they broughtºº
thirtyº
companionsº
to beº
withº
him. |
 14:12 ¶
And Samson{gr.Sampson} said to them, I propound you a riddle: if ye will indeed tell it me, and discover it within the seven days of the feast, I will you give thirty sheets and thirty changes of raiment. |
|
 14:12 ¶
And Samsonº
saidºº
unto them, I will nowº
put forthºº
a riddleº
unto you: ifº
ye can certainlyºº
declareºº
it me within the sevenº
daysº
of the feast,º
and find [it] out,ºº
then I will giveºº
you thirtyº
sheetsº
and thirtyº
changeº
of garments:º |
 14:13
And if ye cannot tell it me, ye shall give me thirty napkins and thirty changes of apparel: and they said to him, Propound thy riddle, and we will hear it. |
|
 14:13
But ifº
ye cannotººº
declareºº
[it] me, then shall yeº
giveºº
me thirtyº
sheetsº
and thirtyº
changeº
of garments.º
And they saidºº
unto him, Put forthºº
thy riddle,º
that we may hearºº
it. |
 14:14
And he said to them, Meat came forth of the eater, and sweetness out of the strong: and they could not tell the riddle for three days. |
|
 14:14
And he saidºº
unto them, Out of the eaterººº
came forthºº
meat,º
and out of the strongºº
came forthºº
sweetness.º
And they couldºº
notº
in threeº
daysº
expoundºº
the riddle.º |
 14:15
And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they said to the wife of Samson{gr.Sampson}, Deceive now thy husband, and let him tell thee the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: did ye invite us to do us violence? |
|
 14:15
And it came to passº
on the seventhº
day,º
that they saidºº
unto Samson'sº
wife,º
Enticeººº
thy husband,º
that he may declareºº
unto usº
the riddle,º
lestº
we burnºº
thee and thy father'sº
houseº
with fire:º
have ye calledºº
us to take that we have?ºº
[is it] notº
[so]? |
 14:16
And Samson's{gr.Sampson} wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not; for the riddle which thou hast propounded to the children of my people thou hast not told me: and Samson{gr.Sampson} said to her, If I have not told it to my father and my mother, shall I tell it to thee? |
|
 14:16
And Samson'sº
wifeº
weptºº
beforeº
him, and said,ºº
Thou dost butº
hateºº
me, and lovestºº
me not:º
thou hast put forthºº
a riddleº
unto the childrenº
of my people,º
and hast notº
toldºº
[it] me. And he saidºº
unto her, Behold,º
I have notº
toldºº
[it] my fatherº
nor my mother,º
and shall I tellºº
[it] thee? |
 14:17
And she wept before him the seven days, during which their banquet lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she troubled him; and she told it to the children of her people. |
|
 14:17
And she weptºº
beforeº
him the sevenº
days,º
whileº
their feastº
lasted:ºº
and it came to passº
on the seventhº
day,º
that he toldºº
her, becauseº
she lay soreºº
upon him: and she toldºº
the riddleº
to the childrenº
of her people.º |
 14:18
And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day, before sunrise, What [is] sweeter than honey? and what [is] stronger than a lion? and Samson{gr.Sampson} said to them, If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, ye would not have known my riddle. |
|
 14:18
And the menºº
of the cityº
saidºº
unto him on the seventhº
dayº
beforeº
the sunº
went down,ºº
Whatº
[is] sweeterº
than honey?ºº
and whatº
[is] strongerº
than a lion?ºº
And he saidºº
unto them, Ifº
ye had not plowedºº
with my heifer,º
ye had notº
found outºº
my riddle.º |
 14:19 ¶
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully, and he went down to Askelon{gr.Ascalon}, and destroyed of the inhabitants thirty men, and took their garments, and gave the changes of raiment to them that told the riddle; and Samson{gr.Sampson} was very angry, and went up to the house of his father. |
|
 14:19 ¶
And the Spiritº
of Yahwehº
cameºº
uponº
him, and he went downºº
to Ashkelon,º
and slewºº
thirtyº
menº
ofº
them, and tookººº
their spoil,º
and gaveºº
changeº
of garmentsº
unto them which expoundedºº
the riddle.º
And his angerº
was kindled,ºº
and he went upºº
to his father'sº
house.º |
 14:20
And the wife of Samson{gr.Sampson} was [given] to one of his friends, with whom he was on terms of friendship. |
|
 14:20
But Samson'sº
wifeº
wasº
[given] to his companion,º
whomº
he had used as his friend.ºº |
