 18:1 ¶
In those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of Dan sought for itself an inheritance to inhabit, because no inheritance had fallen to it until that day in the midst of the tribes of the children of Israel. |
|
 18:1 ¶
In thoseº
daysº
[there was] noº
kingº
in Israel:º
and in thoseº
daysº
the tribeº
of the Danitesº
soughtºº
them an inheritanceº
to dwellº
in;ºº
forº
untoº
thatº
dayº
[all their] inheritanceº
had notº
fallenºº
unto them amongº
the tribesº
of Israel.º |
 18:2
And the sons of Dan sent from their families five men of valour, from Zorah{gr.Saraa} and from Esthaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, Go and search out the land. And they came as far as the mount of Ephraim to the house of Micah{gr.Michaias} and they lodged there, |
|
 18:2
And the childrenº
of Danº
sentºº
of their familyºº
fiveº
menºº
from their coasts,ºº
menºº
of valour,º
from Zorah,ºº
and from Eshtaol,ºº
to spyºº
outºº
the land,º
and to searchºº
it; and they saidºº
untoº
them, Go,ººº
searchººº
the land:º
who when they cameºº
to mountº
Ephraim,º
toº
the houseº
of Micah,º
they lodgedºº
there.º |
 18:3
in the house of Micah{gr.Michaias}, and they recognised the voice of the young man the Levite, and turned in thither; and said to him, Who brought thee in hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here? |
|
 18:3
When theyº
[were] byº
the houseº
of Micah,º
theyº
knewººº
the voiceº
of the young manº
the Levite:º
and they turned inºº
thither,º
and saidºº
unto him, Whoº
broughtºº
thee hither?º
and whatº
makestºº
thouº
in thisº
[place]? and whatº
hast thou here?º |
 18:4
And he said to them, Thus and thus did Micah{gr.Michaias} to me, and he hired me, and I became his priest. |
|
 18:4
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Thusº
and thusº
dealethºº
Micahº
with me, and hath hiredºº
me, and I amº
his priest.º |
 18:5
And they said to him, Enquire now of God, and we shall know whether our way will prosper, on which we are going. |
|
 18:5
And they saidºº
unto him, Ask counsel,ºº
we pray thee,º
of Elohim,º
that we may knowºº
whether our wayº
whichº
weº
goºº
shall be prosperous.ºº |
 18:6
And the priest said to them, Go in peace; your way in which ye go, [is] before the Lord. |
|
 18:6
And the priestº
saidºº
unto them, Goººº
in peace:º
beforeº
Yahwehº
[is] your wayº
whereinº
ye go.ººº |
 18:7 ¶
And the five men went on, and came to Laisa; and they saw the people in the midst of it dwelling securely, at ease as [is] the manner of the Zidonians{gr.Sidonians}, and there is no one perverting or shaming a matter in the land, no heir extorting treasures; and they are far from the Zidonians{gr.Sidonians}, and they have no intercourse with any one. |
|
 18:7 ¶
Then the fiveº
menºº
departed,ººº
and cameºº
to Laish,º
and sawººº
the peopleº
thatº
[were] therein,º
how they dweltºº
careless,º
after the mannerº
of the Zidonians,º
quietºº
and secure;ºº
and [there was] noº
magistrateººº
in the land,º
that might put [them] to shameºº
in [any] thing;º
and theyº
[were] farº
from the Zidonians,ºº
and had noº
businessº
withº
[any] man.º |
 18:8
And the five men came to their brethren to Zorah{gr.Saraa} and Esthaol, and said to their brethren, Why sit ye here [idle]? |
|
 18:8
And they cameºº
untoº
their brethrenº
to Zorahº
and Eshtaol:º
and their brethrenº
saidºº
unto them, Whatº
[say] ye?º |
 18:9
And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and, behold, [it is] very good, yet ye are still: delay not to go, an to enter in to possess the land. |
|
 18:9
And they said,ºº
Arise,ºº
that we may go upºº
againstº
them: forº
we have seenººº
the land,º
and, behold,º
it [is] veryº
good:º
and [are] yeº
still?ºº
be not slothfulººº
to go,ººº
[and] to enterºº
to possessººº
the land.º |
 18:10
And whensoever ye shall go, ye shall come in upon a people secure, and the land [is] extensive, for God has given it into your hand; a place where there is no want of anything that the earth affords. |
|
 18:10
When ye go,ºº
ye shall comeºº
untoº
a peopleº
secure,ºº
and to a largeº
land:º
forº
Elohimº
hath givenºº
it into your hands;º
a placeº
whereº
[there is] noº
wantº
of anyº
thingº
thatº
[is] in the earth.º |
 18:11 ¶
And there departed thence of the families of Dan, from Zorah{gr.Saraa} and from Esthaol, six hundred men, girded with weapons of war. |
|
 18:11 ¶
And there wentºº
from thenceºº
of the familyºº
of the Danites,º
out of Zorahºº
and out of Eshtaol,ºº
sixº
hundredº
menº
appointedºº
with weaponsº
of war.º |
 18:12
And they went up, and encamped in Kirjathjearim{gr.Cariathiarim} in Judah{gr.Juda}; therefore it was called in that place the camp of Dan, until this day: behold, [it is] behind Kirjathjearim{gr.Cariathiarim}. |
|
 18:12
And they went up,ºº
and pitchedºº
in Kirjathjearim,º
in Judah:º
whereforeºº
they calledºº
thatº
placeº
Mahanehdanº
untoº
thisº
day:º
behold,º
[it is] behindº
Kirjathjearim.º |
 18:13
And they went on thence to the mount of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah{gr.Michaias}. |
|
 18:13
And they passedºº
thenceºº
unto mountº
Ephraim,º
and cameºº
untoº
the houseº
of Micah.º |
 18:14 ¶
And the five men who went to spy out the land of Laisa answered, and said to their brethren, Ye know that there is in this place an ephod, and theraphin, and a graven and a molten image; and now consider what ye shall do. |
|
 18:14 ¶
Then answeredºº
the fiveº
menºº
that wentºº
to spy outººº
the countryº
of Laish,º
and saidºº
untoº
their brethren,º
Do ye knowºº
thatº
there isº
in theseº
housesº
an ephod,º
and teraphim,º
and a graven image,º
and a molten image?º
nowº
therefore considerºº
whatº
ye have to do.ºº |
 18:15
And they turned aside there, and went into the house of the young man, the Levite, [even] into the house of Micah{gr.Michaias}, and asked him how he was. |
|
 18:15
And they turnedºº
thitherward,º
and cameºº
toº
the houseº
of the young manº
the Levite,º
[even] unto the houseº
of Micah,º
and salutedººº
him. |
 18:16
And the six hundred men of the sons of Dan who were girded with their weapons of war stood by the door of the gate. |
|
 18:16
And the sixº
hundredº
menº
appointedºº
with their weaponsº
of war,º
whichº
[were] of the childrenºº
of Dan,º
stoodºº
by the enteringº
of the gate.º |
 18:17
And the five men who went to spy out the land went up, and entered into the house of Micah{gr.Michaias}, and the priest stood. |
|
 18:17
And the fiveº
menºº
that wentººº
to spy outººº
the landº
went up,ºº
[and] came inºº
thither,º
[and] tookººº
the graven image,º
and the ephod,º
and the teraphim,º
and the molten image:º
and the priestº
stoodºº
in the enteringº
of the gateº
with the sixº
hundredº
menº
[that were] appointedºº
with weaponsº
of war.º |
 18:18
And they took the graven image, and the ephod, and the theraphin, and the molten image; and the priest said to them, What are ye doing? |
|
 18:18
And theseº
wentºº
into Micah'sº
house,º
and fetchedººº
the carved image,º
the ephod,º
and the teraphim,º
and the molten image.º
Then saidºº
the priestº
untoº
them, Whatº
doºº
ye?º |
 18:19
And they said to him, Be silent, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest: [is it] better for thee to be the priest of the house of one man, or to be the priest of a tribe and house for a family of Israel? |
|
 18:19
And they saidºº
unto him, Hold thy peace,ºº
layºº
thine handº
uponº
thy mouth,º
and goººº
withº
us, and beº
to usºº
a fatherº
and a priest:º
[is it] betterº
for thee to beº
a priestº
unto the houseº
of oneº
man,º
orº
that thou beº
a priestº
unto a tribeº
and a familyº
in Israel?º |
 18:20
And the heart of the priest was glad, and he took the ephod, and the theraphin, and the graven image, and the molten image, and went in the midst of the people. |
|
 18:20
And the priest'sº
heartº
was glad,ºº
and he tookººº
the ephod,º
and the teraphim,º
and the graven image,º
and wentº
inºº
the midstº
of the people.º |
 18:21
So they turned and departed, and put their children and their property and their baggage before them. |
|
 18:21
So they turnedºº
and departed,ººº
and putººº
the little onesº
and the cattleº
and the carriageº
beforeº
them. |
 18:22 ¶
They went some distance from the house of Micah{gr.Michaias}, and, behold, Micah{gr.Michaias} and the men in the houses near Micah's{gr.Michaias} house, cried out, and overtook the children of Dan. |
|
 18:22 ¶
[And] when theyº
were a good wayºº
from the houseºº
of Micah,º
the menºº
thatº
[were] in the housesº
nearº
to Micah'sº
houseº
were gathered together,ºº
and overtookººº
the childrenº
of Dan.º |
 18:23
And the children of Dan turned their face, and said to Micah{gr.Michaias}, What is the matter with thee that thou hast cried out? |
|
 18:23
And they criedºº
untoº
the childrenº
of Dan.º
And they turnedºº
their faces,º
and saidºº
unto Micah,º
Whatº
aileth thee, thatº
thou comest with such a company?ºº |
 18:24
And Micah{gr.Michaias} said, Because ye have taken my graven image which I made, and my priest, and are gone; and what have I remaining? and what [is] this [that] ye say to me, Why criest thou? |
|
 18:24
And he said,ºº
Ye have taken awayººº
my elohimº
whichº
I made,ºº
and the priest,º
and ye are gone away:ººº
and whatº
have I more?º
and whatº
[is] thisº
[that] ye sayºº
untoº
me, Whatº
aileth thee? |
 18:25
And the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest angry men run upon thee, and take away thy life, and the lives of thy house. |
|
 18:25
And the childrenº
of Danº
saidºº
untoº
him, Let notº
thy voiceº
be heardºº
amongº
us, lestº
angryºº
fellowsºº
runºº
upon thee, and thou loseºº
thy life,º
with the livesº
of thy household.º |
 18:26
And the children of Dan went their way; and Micah{gr.Michaias} saw that they were stronger than himself, and he returned to his house. |
|
 18:26
And the childrenº
of Danº
wentººº
their way:º
and when Micahº
sawºº
thatº
theyº
[were] too strongº
forº
him, he turnedºº
and went backºº
untoº
his house.º |
 18:27
And the children of Dan took what Micah{gr.Michaias} had made, and the priest that he had, and they came to Laisa, to a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire. |
|
 18:27
And theyº
tookººº
[the things] whichº
Micahº
had made,ºº
and the priestº
whichº
he had,º
and cameºº
untoº
Laish,º
untoº
a peopleº
[that were] at quietºº
and secure:ºº
and they smoteºº
them with the edgeº
of the sword,º
and burntºº
the cityº
with fire.º |
 18:28
And there was no deliverer, because [the city] is far from the Zidonians{gr.Sidonians}, and they have no intercourse with men, and it [is] in the valley of the house of Rahab{gr.Raab}; and they built the city, and dwelt in it. |
|
 18:28
And [there was] noº
deliverer,ºº
becauseº
itº
[was] farº
from Zidon,ºº
and they had noº
businessº
withº
[any] man;º
and itº
was in the valleyº
thatº
[lieth] by Bethrehob.º
And they builtººº
a city,º
and dweltºº
therein. |
 18:29
And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and the name of the city was Ulamais before. |
|
 18:29
And they calledºº
the nameº
of the cityº
Dan,º
after the nameº
of Danº
their father,º
whoº
was bornºº
unto Israel:º
howbeitº
the nameº
of the cityº
[was] Laishº
at the first.º |
 18:30 ¶
And the children of Dan set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan son of Gershom{gr.Gerson} son of Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan till the time of the carrying away of the nation. |
|
 18:30 ¶
And the childrenº
of Danº
set upººº
the graven image:º
and Jonathan,º
the sonº
of Gershom,ºº
the sonº
of Manasseh,º
heº
and his sonsº
wereº
priestsº
to the tribeº
of Danº
untilº
the dayº
of the captivityºº
of the land.º |
 18:31
And they set up for themselves the graven image which Micah{gr.Michaias} made, all the days that the house of God was in Shelah{gr.Selom}; and it was so in those days [that] there was no king in Israel. |
|
 18:31
And they set them upººº
Micah'sº
graven image,º
whichº
he made,ºº
allº
the timeº
that the houseº
of Elohimº
wasº
in Shiloh.º |
