 3:1 ¶
And these [are] the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}. |
|
 3:1 ¶
Now theseº
[are] the nationsº
whichº
Yahwehº
left,ººº
to proveººº
Israelº
by them, [even]º
as manyºº
[of Israel] as had notº
knownººº
allº
the warsº
of Canaan;º |
 3:2
Only for the sake of the generations of Israel, to teach them war, only the men before them knew them not. |
|
 3:2
Onlyº
thatºº
the generationsº
of the childrenº
of Israelº
might know,ºº
to teachºº
them war,º
at the leastº
such asº
beforeº
knewºº
nothingº
thereof; |
 3:3
The five lordships of the Philistines{gr.Phylistines}, and every Canaanite{gr.Chananite}, and the Zidonian{gr.Sidonian}, and the Hivite{gr.Evite} who dwelt in Lebanon{gr.Libanus} from the mount of Hermon{gr.Aermon} to Laboemath. |
|
 3:3
[Namely], fiveº
lordsº
of the Philistines,º
and allº
the Canaanites,º
and the Sidonians,º
and the Hivitesº
that dweltºº
in mountº
Lebanon,º
from mountºº
Baalhermonº
untoº
the entering inºº
of Hamath.º |
 3:4
And [this] was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Mosheh{gr.Moses}. |
|
 3:4
And they wereº
to proveººº
Israelº
by them, to knowºº
whether they would hearkenºº
untoº
the commandmentsº
of Yahweh,º
whichº
he commandedººº
their fathersº
by the handº
of Moses.º |
 3:5 ¶
And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite{gr.Chananite}, and the Hittite{gr.Chettite}, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite{gr.Pherezite}, and the Hivite{gr.Evite}, and the Jebusite. |
|
 3:5 ¶
And the childrenº
of Israelº
dweltºº
amongº
the Canaanites,º
Hittites,º
and Amorites,º
and Perizzites,º
and Hivites,º
and Jebusites:º |
 3:6
And they took their daughters for wives to themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. |
|
 3:6
And they tookººº
their daughtersº
to be their wives,º
and gaveºº
their daughtersº
to their sons,º
and servedººº
their elohim.º |
 3:7
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves. |
|
 3:7
And the childrenº
of Israelº
didººº
evilº
in the sightº
of Yahweh,º
and forgatººº
Yahwehº
their Elohim,º
and servedººº
Baalimº
and the groves.º |
 3:8 ¶
And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and sold them into the hand of Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers: and the children of Israel served Chusarsathaim eight years. |
|
 3:8 ¶
Therefore the angerº
of Yahwehº
was hotºº
against Israel,º
and he soldºº
them into the handº
of Chushanrishathaimº
kingº
of Mesopotamia:º
and the childrenº
of Israelº
servedººº
Chushanrishathaimº
eightº
years.º |
 3:9
And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and the Lord raised up a saviour to Israel, and he saved them, Othniel{gr.Gothoniel} the son of Kenaz{gr.Kenez}, the brother of Caleb{gr.Chaleb} younger than himself. |
|
 3:9
And when the childrenº
of Israelº
criedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
Yahwehº
raised upºº
a delivererºº
to the childrenº
of Israel,º
who deliveredºº
them, [even]º
Othnielº
the sonº
of Kenaz,º
Caleb'sº
youngerº
brother.º |
 3:10
And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war against Chusarsathaim: and the Lord delivered into his hand Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers, and his hand prevailed against Chusarsathaim. |
|
 3:10
And the Spiritº
of Yahwehº
cameº
uponº
him, and he judgedººº
Israel,º
and went outºº
to war:º
and Yahwehº
deliveredººº
Chushanrishathaimº
kingº
of Mesopotamiaº
into his hand;º
and his handº
prevailedºº
againstº
Chushanrishathaim.º |
 3:11
And the land was quiet forty years; and Othniel{gr.Gothoniel} the son of Kenaz{gr.Kenez} died. |
|
 3:11
And the landº
had restºº
fortyº
years.º
And Othnielº
the sonº
of Kenazº
died.ºº |
 3:12 ¶
And the children of Israel continued to do evil before the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon{gr.Eglom} king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil before the Lord. |
|
 3:12 ¶
And the childrenº
of Israelº
didºº
evilº
againºº
in the sightº
of Yahweh:º
and Yahwehº
strengthenedººº
Eglonº
the kingº
of Moabº
againstº
Israel,º
becauseºº
they had doneººº
evilº
in the sightº
of Yahweh.º |
 3:13
And he gathered to himself all the children of Ammon and Amalek{gr.Amalec}, and went and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of Palm-trees. |
|
 3:13
And he gatheredºº
untoº
himº
the childrenº
of Ammonº
and Amalek,º
and wentººº
and smoteººº
Israel,º
and possessedººº
the cityº
of palm trees.ººº |
 3:14
And the children of Israel served Eglon{gr.Eglom} the king of Moab eighteen years. |
|
 3:14
So the childrenº
of Israelº
servedººº
Eglonº
the kingº
of Moabº
eighteenºº
years.º |
 3:15
And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and he raised up to them a saviour, Ehud{gr.Aod} the son of Gera a son of Jemeni, a man who used both hands alike: and the children of Israel sent gifts by his hand to Eglon{gr.Eglom} king of Moab. |
|
 3:15
But when the childrenº
of Israelº
criedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
Yahwehº
raised them upºº
a deliverer,ººº
Ehudºº
the sonº
of Gera,º
a Benjamite,ºº
a manº
lefthanded:ººº
and by himº
the childrenº
of Israelº
sentºº
a presentº
unto Eglonº
the kingº
of Moab.º |
 3:16
And Ehud{gr.Aod} made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh. |
|
 3:16
But Ehudºº
madeºº
him a daggerº
which had twoº
edges,º
of a cubitº
length;º
and he did girdºº
it underºº
his raimentº
uponº
his rightº
thigh.º |
 3:17
And he went, and brought the presents to Eglon{gr.Eglom} king of Moab, and Eglon{gr.Eglom} [was] a very handsome man. |
|
 3:17
And he broughtººº
the presentº
unto Eglonº
kingº
of Moab:º
and Eglonº
[was] a veryº
fatº
man.º |
 3:18
And it came to pass when [Ehud{gr.Aod}] had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts. |
|
 3:18
And whenº
he had made an endºº
to offerººº
the present,º
he sent awayººº
the peopleº
that bareºº
the present.º |
 3:19
And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Gilgal{gr.Galgal}; and Ehud{gr.Aod} said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king! and Eglon{gr.Eglom} said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him. |
|
 3:19
But heº
himself turned againºº
fromº
the quarriesº
thatº
[were] byº
Gilgal,º
and said,ºº
I have a secretº
errandº
unto thee, O king:º
who said,ºº
Keep silence.ºº
And allº
that stoodºº
by him went outºº
fromºº
him. |
 3:20
And Ehud{gr.Aod} went in to him; and he sat in his own upper summer chamber quite alone; and Ehud{gr.Aod} said, I have a message from God to thee, O king: and Eglon{gr.Eglom} rose up from his throne near him. |
|
 3:20
And Ehudºº
cameºº
untoº
him; and heº
was sittingºº
in a summerº
parlour,º
whichº
he had for himself alone.º
And Ehudºº
said,ºº
I have a messageº
from Elohimº
untoº
thee. And he aroseºº
out ofºº
[his] seat.º |
 3:21
And it came to pass as he arose, that Ehud{gr.Aod} stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly; |
|
 3:21
And Ehudºº
put forthººº
his leftº
hand,º
and tookººº
the daggerº
fromºº
his rightº
thigh,º
and thrustºº
it into his belly:º |
 3:22
and drove in also the haft after the blade, and the fat closed in upon the blade, for he drew not out the dagger from his belly. |
|
 3:22
And the haftº
alsoº
went inºº
afterº
the blade;º
and the fatº
closedºº
uponº
the blade,º
so thatº
he could notº
drawºº
the daggerº
out of his belly;ºº
and the dirtº
came out.ºº |
 3:23
And Ehud{gr.Aod} went out to the porch, and passed out by the appointed [guards], and shut the doors of the chamber upon him, and locked [them]. |
|
 3:23
Then Ehudºº
went forthºº
through the porch,º
and shutºº
the doorsº
of the parlourº
upon him,º
and lockedºº
them. |
 3:24
And he went out: and Eglon's{gr.Eglom} servants came, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber [were] locked; and they said, Does he not uncover his feet in the summer-chamber? |
|
 3:24
When heº
was gone out,ºº
his servantsº
came;ºº
and when they sawºº
that, behold,º
the doorsº
of the parlourº
[were] locked,ºº
they said,ºº
Surelyº
heº
coverethººº
his feetº
in his summerº
chamber.º |
 3:25
And they waited till they were ashamed, and, behold, there was no one that opened the doors of the upper chamber; and they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead upon the earth. |
|
 3:25
And they tarriedºº
tillº
they were ashamed:ºº
and, behold,º
he openedºº
notº
the doorsº
of the parlour;º
therefore they tookººº
a key,º
and openedºº
[them]: and, behold,º
their adonº
[was] fallen downºº
deadºº
on the earth.º |
 3:26
And Ehud{gr.Aod} escaped while they were in a tumult, and no one paid attention to him; and he passed the quarries, and escaped to Setirotha. |
|
 3:26
And Ehudºº
escapedºº
whileº
they tarried,ºº
and passed beyondººº
the quarries,º
and escapedºº
unto Seirath.º |
 3:27
And it came to pass when Ehud{gr.Aod} came into the land of Israel, that he blew the horn in mount Ephraim, and the children of Israel came down with him from the mountain, and he [was] before them. |
|
 3:27
And it came to pass,º
when he was come,ºº
that he blewºº
a trumpetº
in the mountainº
of Ephraim,º
and the childrenº
of Israelº
went downºº
withº
him fromº
the mount,º
and heº
beforeº
them. |
 3:28
And he said to them, Come down after me, for the Lord God has delivered our enemies, even Moab, into our hand; and they went down after him, and seized on the fords of Jordan before Moab, and he did not suffer a man to pass over. |
|
 3:28
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Followºº
afterº
me: forº
Yahwehº
hath deliveredººº
your enemiesººº
the Moabitesº
into your hand.º
And they went downºº
afterº
him, and tookººº
the fordsº
of Jordanº
toward Moab,º
and sufferedºº
notº
a manº
to pass over.ºº |
 3:29
And they smote Moab on that day about ten thousand men, every [lusty] person and every mighty man; and not a man escaped. |
|
 3:29
And they slewºº
ofº
Moabº
at thatº
timeº
about tenº
thousandº
men,º
allº
lusty,º
and allº
menº
of valour;º
and there escapedºº
notº
a man.º |
 3:30
So Moab was humbled in that day under the hand of Israel, and the land had rest eighty years; and Ehud{gr.Aod} judged them till he died. |
|
 3:30
So Moabº
was subduedºº
thatº
dayº
underº
the handº
of Israel.º
And the landº
had restºº
fourscoreº
years.º |
 3:31 ¶
And after him rose up Samegar the son of Dinach, and smote the Philistines to the number of six hundred men with a ploughshare [such as is drawn by] oxen; and he too delivered Israel. |
|
 3:31 ¶
And afterº
him wasº
Shamgarº
the sonº
of Anath,º
which slewºº
ofº
the Philistinesº
sixº
hundredº
menº
with an oxº
goad:º
and heº
alsoº
deliveredººº
Israel.º |
