 6:1 ¶ And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian{gr.Madiam} seven years.

 6:1 ¶ And the childrenº of Israelº didºº evilº in the sightº of Yahweh:º and Yahwehº deliveredºº them into the handº of Midianº sevenº years.º

 6:2 And the hand of Midian{gr.Madiam} prevailed against Israel: and the children of Israel made for themselves because of Midian{gr.Madiam} the caves in the mountains, and the dens, and the holes in the rocks.

 6:2 And the handº of Midianº prevailedºº againstº Israel:º [and] becauseºº of the Midianitesº the childrenº of Israelº madeºº themº the densº whichº [are] in the mountains,º and caves,º and strong holds.º

 6:3 And it came to pass when the children of Israel sowed, that Midian{gr.Madiam} and Amalek{gr.Amalec} went up, and the children of the east went up together with them.

 6:3 And [so] it was,º whenº Israelº had sown,ºº that the Midianitesº came up,ºº and the Amalekites,ºº and the childrenº of the east,º even they came upºº againstº them;

 6:4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed their fruits until they came to Gaza; and they left not the support of life in the land of Israel, not even ox or ass among the herds.

 6:4 And they encampedºº againstº them, and destroyedººº the increaseº of the earth,º tillº thou comeºº unto Gaza,º and leftºº noº sustenanceº for Israel,º neither sheep,º nor ox,º nor ass.º

 6:5 For they and their stock came up, and their tents were with them, as the locust in multitude, and there was no number to them and their camels; and they came to the land of Israel, and laid it waste.

 6:5 Forº theyº came upºº with their cattleº and their tents,º and they cameºººº asºº grasshoppersº for multitude;º [for] both theyº and their camelsº were withoutº number:º and they enteredºº into the landº to destroyºº it.

 6:6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of Midian{gr.Madiam}.

 6:6 And Israelº was greatlyº impoverishedºº becauseºº of the Midianites;º and the childrenº of Israelº criedºº untoº Yahweh.º

 6:7 ¶ And the children of Israel cried to the Lord because of Midian{gr.Madiam}.

 6:7 ¶ And it came to pass,º whenº the childrenº of Israelº criedºº untoº Yahwehº becauseº ofºº the Midianites,º

 6:8 And the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel; and he said to them, Thus says the Lord God of Israel, I am he that brought you up out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and I brought you up out of the house of your bondage.

 6:8 That Yahwehº sentºº a prophetºº untoº the childrenº of Israel,º which saidºº unto them, Thusº saithºº Yahwehº Elohimº of Israel,º Iº brought you upººº from Egypt,ºº and brought you forthººº out of the houseºº of bondage;º

 6:9 And I delivered you out of the hand of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and out of the hand of all that afflicted you, and I cast them out before you; and I gave you their land.

 6:9 And I deliveredºº you out of the handºº of the Egyptians,º and out of the handºº of allº that oppressedºº you, and drave them outººº from beforeºº you, and gaveºº youº their land;º

 6:10 And I said to you, I [am] the Lord your God: ye shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell; but ye hearkened not to my voice.

 6:10 And I saidºº unto you, Iº [am] Yahwehº your Elohim;º fearºº notºº the elohimº of the Amorites,º in whoseº landº yeº dwell:ºº but ye have notº obeyedºº my voice.º

 6:11 ¶ And an angel of the Lord came, and sat down under the fir tree, which was in Ephrath{gr.Ephratha} in the land of Joash{gr.Joas} father of Esdri; and Gideon{gr.Gedeon} his son [was] threshing wheat in a wine-press in order to escape from the face of Midian{gr.Madiam}.

 6:11 ¶ And there cameºº an angelº of Yahweh,º and satºº underº an oakº whichº [was] in Ophrah,º thatº [pertained] unto Joashº the Abiezrite:º and his sonº Gideonº threshedºº wheatº by the winepress,º to hideºº [it] fromºº the Midianites.º

 6:12 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, The Lord [is] with thee, thou mighty in strength.

 6:12 And the angelº of Yahwehº appearedºº untoº him, and saidºº untoº him, Yahwehº [is] withº thee, thou mightyº manº of valour.º

 6:13 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said to him, [Be gracious] with me, my Lord: but if the Lord is with us, why have these evils found us? and where are all his miracles, which our fathers have related to us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}? and now he has cast us out, and given us into the hand of Midian{gr.Madiam}.

 6:13 And Gideonº saidºº untoº him, Ohº my adon,º ifº Yahwehº beº withº us, whyº then is allº thisº befallenºº us? and whereº [be] allº his miraclesºº whichº our fathersº toldºº us of, saying,ºº Did notº Yahwehº bring us upºº from Egypt?ºº but nowº Yahwehº hath forsakenºº us, and deliveredºº us into the handsº of the Midianites.º

 6:14 And the angel of the Lord turned to him, and said, Go in this thy strength, and thou shalt save Israel out of the hand of Midian{gr.Madiam}: behold, I have sent thee.

 6:14 And Yahwehº lookedºº uponº him, and said,ºº Goºº inº thisº thy might,º and thou shalt saveººº Israelº from the handºº of the Midianites:º have notº I sentºº thee?

 6:15 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said to him, [Be gracious] with me, my Lord: whereby shall I save Israel? behold, my thousand is weakened in Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, and I am the least in my father's house.

 6:15 And he saidºº untoº him, Ohº Yahweh,º wherewithº shall I saveººº Israel?º behold,º my familyººº [is] poorº in Manasseh,º and Iº [am] the leastº in my father'sº house.º

 6:16 And the angel of the Lord said to him, The Lord shall be with thee, and thou shalt smite Midian{gr.Madiam} as one man.

 6:16 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº him, Surelyº I will beº withº thee, and thou shalt smiteººº the Midianitesº as oneº man.º

 6:17 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said to him, If now I have found mercy in thine eyes, and thou wilt do this day for me all that thou hast spoken of with me,

 6:17 And he saidºº untoº him, Ifº nowº I have foundºº graceº in thy sight,º then shewºº me a signº that thouºº talkestºº withº me.

 6:18 depart not hence until I come to thee, and I will bring forth an offering and offer it before thee: and he said, I will remain until thou return.

 6:18 Departºº notº hence,ºº I pray thee,º untilº I comeºº untoº thee, and bring forthººº my present,º and setººº [it] beforeº thee. And he said,ºº Iº will tarryºº untilº thou come again.ºº

 6:19 ¶ And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} went in, and prepared a kid of the goats, and an ephah of fine flour unleavened; and he put the flesh in the basket, and poured the broth into the pot, and brought them forth to him under the turpentine tree, and drew nigh.

 6:19 ¶ And Gideonº went in,ºº and made readyºº a kid,ºº and unleavened cakesº of an ephahº of flour:º the fleshº he putºº in a basket,º and he putºº the brothº in a pot,º and brought [it] outºº untoº him underºº the oak,º and presentedºº [it].

 6:20 And the angel of God said to him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and put them on that rock, and pour out the broth close by: and he did so.

 6:20 And the angelº of Elohimº saidºº untoº him, Takeººº the fleshº and the unleavened cakes,º and layººº [them] uponº thisº rock,º and pour outºº the broth.º And he didºº so.º

 6:21 ¶ And the angel of the Lord stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened bread; and fire came up out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened bread, and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.

 6:21 ¶ Then the angelº of Yahwehº put forthººº the endº of the staffº thatº [was] in his hand,º and touchedºº the fleshº and the unleavened cakes;º and there rose upºº fireº out ofº the rock,º and consumedººº the fleshº and the unleavened cakes.º Then the angelº of Yahwehº departedºº out of his sight.ºº

 6:22 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} saw that he was an angel of the Lord; and Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said, Ah, ah, Lord my God! for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.

 6:22 And when Gideonº perceivedºº thatº heº [was] an angelº of Yahweh,º Gideonº said,ºº Alas,º O Adonaiº Yahweh!º forº becauseºº I have seenºº an angelº of Yahwehº faceº toº face.º

 6:23 And the Lord said to him, Peace be to thee, fear not, thou shalt not die.

 6:23 And Yahwehº saidºº unto him, Peaceº [be] unto thee; fearºº not:º thou shalt notº die.ºº

 6:24 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} built there an altar to the Lord, and called it The peace of the Lord, until this day, as it is still in Ephrath{gr.Ephratha} of the father of Esdri.

 6:24 Then Gideonº builtºº an altarº thereº unto Yahweh,º and calledºº it Yahweh Shalom:º untoº thisº dayº it [is] yetº in Ophrahº of the Abiezrites.º

 6:25 ¶ And it came to pass in that night, that the Lord said to him, Take the young bullock which thy father has, even the second bullock of seven years old, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal which thy father has, and the grove which is by it thou shalt destroy.

 6:25 ¶ And it came to passº the sameº night,º that Yahwehº saidºº unto him, Takeººº thy father'sº youngº bullock,ºº even the secondº bullockº of sevenº yearsº old,º and throw downººº the altarº of Baalº thatº thy fatherº hath, and cut downºº the groveº thatº [is] byº it:

 6:26 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God on the top of this Maozi in the ordering [it], and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer up whole-burnt-offerings with the wood of the grove, which thou shalt destroy.

 6:26 And buildºº an altarº unto Yahwehº thy Elohimº uponº the topº of thisº rock,º in the ordered place,º and takeººº the secondº bullock,º and offerºº a burnt sacrificeº with the woodº of the groveº whichº thou shalt cut down.ºº

 6:27 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord spoke to him: and it came to pass, as he feared the house of his father and the men of the city if he should do it by day, that he did it by night.

 6:27 Then Gideonº tookºº tenº menºº of his servants,ºº and didºº asº Yahwehº had saidºº untoº him: and [so] it was,º becauseº he fearedººº his father'sº household,º and the menºº of the city,º that he could not doººº [it] by day,º that he didºº [it] by night.º

 6:28 ¶ And the men of the city rose up early in the morning; and behold, the altar of Baal had been demolished, and the grove by it had been destroyed; and they saw the second bullock, which Gideon{gr.Gedeon} offered on the altar that had been built.

 6:28 ¶ And when the menºº of the cityº arose earlyºº in the morning,º behold,º the altarº of Baalº was cast down,ºº and the groveº was cut downºº thatº [was] byº it, and the secondº bullockº was offeredºº uponº the altarº [that was] built.ºº

 6:29 And a man said to his neighbour, Who has done this thing? and they enquired and searched, and learnt that Gideon{gr.Gedeon} the son of Joash{gr.Joas} had done this thing.

 6:29 And they saidºº oneº toº another,º Whoº hath doneºº thisº thing?º And when they enquiredºº and asked,ºº they said,ºº Gideonº the sonº of Joashº hath doneºº thisº thing.º

 6:30 And the men of the city said to Joash{gr.Joas}, Bring out thy son, and let him die, because he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and because he has destroyed the grove that is by it.

 6:30 Then the menºº of the cityº saidºº untoº Joash,º Bring outººº thy son,º that he may die:ºº becauseº he hath cast downººº the altarº of Baal,º and becauseº he hath cut downºº the groveº thatº [was] byº it.

 6:31 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} the son of Joash{gr.Joas} said to all the men who rose up against him, Do ye now plead for Baal, or will ye save him? whoever will plead for him, let him be slain this morning: if he be a god let him plead for himself, [because] one has thrown down his altar.

 6:31 And Joashº saidºº unto allº thatº stoodºº againstº him, Will yeº pleadºº for Baal?º will yeº saveºº him? he thatº will pleadºº for him, let him be put to deathºº whilstº [it is yet] morning:º ifº heº [be] an elohim,º let him pleadºº for himself, becauseº [one] hath cast downººº his altar.º

 6:32 And he called it in that day Jerubbaal{gr.Jerobaal}, saying, Let Baal plead thereby, because his altar has been thrown down.

 6:32 Therefore on thatº dayº he calledºº him Jerubbaal,º saying,ºº Let Baalº pleadºº against him, becauseº he hath thrown downººº his altar.º

 6:33 ¶ And all Midian{gr.Madiam}, and Amalek, and the sons of the east gathered themselves together, and encamped in the valley of Jezreel{gr.Jezrael}.

 6:33 ¶ Then allº the Midianitesº and the Amalekitesºº and the childrenº of the eastº were gatheredºº together,º and went over,ºº and pitchedºº in the valleyº of Jezreel.º

 6:34 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon{gr.Gedeon}, and he blew with the horn, and Abiezer came to help after him.

 6:34 But the Spiritº of Yahwehº cameºº uponºº Gideon,º and he blewºº a trumpet;º and Abiezerº was gatheredºº afterº him.

 6:35 And [Gideon{gr.Gedeon}] sent messengers into all Manasseh{gr.Manasse}, and into Asher{gr.Aser}, and into Zebulun{gr.Zabulon}, and into Naphtali{gr.Nephthali}; and he went up to meet them.

 6:35 And he sentºº messengersº throughout allº Manasseh;º whoº alsoº was gatheredºº afterº him: and he sentºº messengersº unto Asher,º and unto Zebulun,º and unto Naphtali;º and they came upºº to meetºº them.

 6:36 ¶ And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said to God, If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,

 6:36 ¶ And Gideonº saidºº untoº Elohim,º Ifº thouº wiltº saveººº Israelº by mine hand,º asº thou hast said,ºº

 6:37 behold, I put the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and drought on all the ground, I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said.

 6:37 Behold,º Iº will putººº a fleeceº of woolº in the floor;º [and] ifº the dewº beº onº the fleeceº only,º and [it be] dryº uponº allº the earthº [beside], then shall I knowºº thatº thou wilt saveººº Israelº by mine hand,º asº thou hast said.ºº

 6:38 And it was so: and he rose up early in the morning, and wrung the fleece, and dew dropped from the fleece, a bowl full of water.

 6:38 And it wasº so:º for he rose up earlyºº on the morrow,ºº and thrustººº the fleeceº together,ºº and wringedºº the dewº out ofº the fleece,º a bowlº fullºº of water.º

 6:39 And Gideon{gr.Gedeon} said to God, Let not, I pray thee, thine anger be kindled with me, and I will speak yet once; I will even yet make one trial more with the fleece: let now the drought be upon the fleece only, and let there be dew on all the ground.

 6:39 And Gideonº saidºº untoº Elohim,º Let notº thine angerº be hotºº against me, and I will speakºº butº this once:º let me prove,ºº I pray thee,º butº this onceº with the fleece;º let it nowº beº dryº onlyº uponº the fleece,º and uponº allº the groundº let there beº dew.º

 6:40 And God did so in that night; and there was drought on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.

 6:40 And Elohimº didºº soº thatº night:º for it wasº dryº uponº the fleeceº only,º and there wasº dewº onº allº the ground.º
