And all the children of Israel went out, and all the congregation was gathered as one man, from Dan even to Beersheba{gr.Bersabee}, and in the land of Gilead{gr.Galaad}, to the Lord at Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}. |

And all the tribes of Israel stood before the Lord in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. |

of Elohim,º

And the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh{gr.Massepha}: and the children of Israel came and said, Tell us, where did this wickedness take place? |

And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I and my concubine went to Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} of Benjamin to lodge. |

that was slain,ºº
answeredºº

I cameºº
into Gibeahº
thatº
[belongeth] to Benjamin,º

and my concubine,º
to lodge.ºº |

And the men of Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} rose up against me, and compassed the house by night against me; they wished to slay me, and they have humbled my concubine, and she is dead. |

me by night,º
[and] thoughtºº
to have slainºº
me: and my concubineº
have they forced,ºº

And I laid hold of my concubine, and divided her in pieces, and sent [the parts] into every coast of the inheritance of the children of Israel; for they have wrought lewdness and abomination in Israel. |

my concubine,º
and cut her in pieces,ºº
and sentºº
her throughout allº
the countryº
of the inheritanceº
of Israel:º
forº
they have committedºº
lewdnessº
and follyº
in Israel.º |

Behold, all ye [are] children of Israel; and consider and take counsel here among yourselves. |

childrenº
of Israel;º
giveºº
hereº
your adviceº
and counsel.º |

20:8 ¶
And all the people rose up as one man, saying, No one of us shall return to his tent, and no one of us shall return to his house. |

the peopleº
aroseºº
as oneº
man,º
saying,ºº
We will notº
anyº
[of us] goººº
to his tent,º
neitherº
will we anyº
[of us] turnºº
into his house.º |

And now this [is] the thing which shall be done in Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}; we will go up against it by lot. |

But nowº
thisº
[shall be] the thingº
whichº
we will doºº
to Gibeah;º
[we will go up] by lotº
againstº
it; |

Moreover we will take ten men for a hundred for all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred for a thousand, and a thousand for ten thousand, to take provision, to cause them to come to Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} of Benjamin, to do to it according to all the abomination, which they wrought in Israel. |

And the tribes of Israel sent men through the whole tribe of Benjamin, saying, What [is] this wickedness that has been wrought among you? |

of Israelº

menºº
through allº
the tribeº
of Benjamin,º
saying,ºº
Whatº
wickednessº
[is] thisº
thatº
is doneºº
among you? |

20:13
Now then give up the men the sons of transgressors that are in Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, and we will put them to death, and purge out wickedness from Israel: but the children of Benjamin consented not to hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel. |
|

the childrenº
of Belial,º
whichº
[are] in Gibeah,º
that we may put them to death,ºº
and put awayºº
evilº
from Israel.ºº
But the childrenº
of Benjaminº

And the children of Benjamin were gathered from their cities to Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, to go forth to fight with the children of Israel. |

But the childrenº
of Benjaminº
gathered themselves togetherºº
out ofº
the citiesº
unto Gibeah,º
to go outºº
to battleº
againstº
the childrenº
of Israel.º |

20:15
And the children of Benjamin from their cities were numbered in that day, twenty-three thousand, [every] man drawing a sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men of all the people, able to use both hands alike; |

All these could sling with stones at a hair, and not miss. |

And the men of Israel, exclusive of Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword; all these [were] men of war. |

And they arose and went up to Bethel{gr.Baethel}, and enquired of God: and the children of Israel said, Who shall go up for us first to fight with the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah{gr.Juda} shall go up first as leader. |

of Elohim,º

of us shall go upºº

to the battleº
againstº
the childrenº

[shall go up] first.º |

And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}. |

And the childrenº
of Israelº

and encampedºº
againstº
Gibeah.º |

And they went out, all the men of Israel, to fight with Benjamin, and engaged with them at Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}. |

And the menº

to battleº

Benjamin;º
and the menº
of Israelº
put themselves in arrayºº
to fightº
againstº
them atº
Gibeah.º |

And the sons of Benjamin went forth from Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, and they destroyed in Israel on that day two and twenty thousand men down to the ground. |

And the childrenº

and destroyed downºº
to the groundº
of the Israelitesº
thatº

And the men of Israel strengthened themselves, and again engaged in battle in the place where they had engaged on the first day. |

And the peopleº

encouragedºº
themselves,º

their battleº

in the placeº
whereºº
they put themselves in arrayºº
the firstº

And the children of Israel went up, and wept before the Lord till evening, and enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall we again draw nigh to battle with our brethren the children of Benjamin? and the Lord said, Go up against them. |

of Yahweh,º

And the children of Israel advanced against the children of Benjamin on the second day. |

And the childrenº
of Israelº
came nearºº

the childrenº

the secondº

And the children of Benjamin went forth to meet them from Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} on the second day, and destroyed of the children of Israel yet further eighteen thousand men down to the ground: all these drew sword. |

And the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bethel{gr.Baethel}; and they wept, and sat there before the Lord; and they fasted on that day until evening, and offered whole-burnt-offerings and perfect sacrifices, before the Lord, |

for the ark of the Lord God [was] there in those days, |

And the childrenº
of Israelº

of Yahweh,º
(for the arkº
of the covenantº
of Elohimº
[was] thereº
in thoseº
days,º |

and Phinehas{gr.Phinees} the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron stood before it in those days; and the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall we yet again go forth to fight with our brethren the sons of Benjamin? and the Lord said, Go up, to-morrow I will give them into your hands. |

And the children of Israel set an ambush against Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} round about [it]. |

And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and arrayed themselves against Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} as before. |

And the childrenº
of Israelº
went upºº
againstº
the childrenº
of Benjaminº
on the thirdº
day,º
and put themselves in arrayºº
againstº
Gibeah,º
as at other times.º |
|
20:31
And the children of Benjamin went out to meet the people, and were all drawn out of the city, and began to smite and slay the people as before in the roads, whereof one goes up to Bethel{gr.Baethel}, and one to Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} in the field, about thirty men of Israel. |
|

And the childrenº
of Benjaminº
went outºº
againstºº
the people,º
[and] were drawn awayºº
fromº
the city;º
and they beganºº
to smiteºº
of the people,ºº
[and] kill,º
as at other times,º
in the highways,º
of whichº
oneº
goeth upºº

of El,ººº
and the otherº
to Gibeahº
in the field,º
about thirtyº
menº
of Israel.º |

And the children of Benjamin said, They fall before us as at the first: but the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them out from the city into the roads; and they did so. |

And the childrenº
of Benjaminº
said,ºº
Theyº
[are] smitten downºº
beforeº
us, as at the first.º
But the childrenº
of Israelº
said,ºº
Let us flee,ºº
and drawºº
them fromº
the cityº
untoº
the highways.º |

And all the men rose up out of their places, and engaged in Baal Tamar{gr.Thamar}; and the liers in wait of Israel advanced from their place from Maraagabe. |
|

And allº
the menº
of Israelº
rose upºº
out of their place,ºº
and put themselves in arrayºº
at Baaltamar:º
and the liers in waitºº
of Israelº
came forthºº
out of their places,ºº
[even] out of the meadowsºº
of Gibeah.ººº |

And there came over against Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel; and the fight [was] severe; and they knew not that evil was coming upon them. |

and the battleº
was sore:ºº
but theyº
knewºº

thatº

And the Lord smote Benjamin before the children of Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin in that day a hundred and twenty-five thousand men: all these drew sword. |

And the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; and the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted in the ambuscade which they had prepared against Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}. |

So the childrenº
of Benjaminº
sawºº
thatº
they were smitten:ºº
for the menº
of Israelº
gaveºº
placeº
to the Benjamites,ºº
becauseº
they trustedºº
untoº
the liers in waitºº
whichº
they had setºº
besideº
Gibeah.º |

And when they retreated, then the liers in wait rose up, and they moved toward Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, and the whole ambush came forth, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword. |
|
20:37
And the liers in waitºº
hasted,ºº
and rushedºº
uponº
Gibeah;º
and the liers in waitºº
drew [themselves] along,ºº
and smoteººº
allº
the cityº
with the edgeº
of the sword.º |
|
20:38
And the children of Israel had a signal of battle with the liers in wait, that they should send up a signal of smoke from the city. |
|
20:38
Now there wasº
an appointed signº
between the menº
of Israelº
andº
the liers in wait,ºº
that they should make a greatºº
flameº
with smokeº
rise upºº
out ofº
the city.º |
|
20:39
And the children of Israel saw that the liers in wait had seized Gibeah{gr.Gabaa}, and they stood in line of battle; and Benjamin began to smite down wounded ones among the men of Israel about thirty men; for they said, Surely they fall again before us, as in the first battle. |
|
20:39
And when the menº
of Israelº
retiredºº
in the battle,º
Benjaminº
beganºº
to smiteºº
[and] killº
of the menº
of Israelº
about thirtyº
persons:º
forº
they said,ºº
Surelyººº
theyº
are smitten downºº
beforeº
us, as [in] the firstº
battle.º |

And the signal went up increasingly over the city as a pillar of smoke; and Benjamin looked behind him, and behold the destruction of the city went up to heaven. |
|
20:40
But when the flameº
beganºº
to arise upºº
out ofº
the cityº
with a pillarº
of smoke,º
the Benjamitesºº
lookedºº
behindº
them, and, behold,º
the flameº
of the cityº
ascended upºº
to heaven.º |
|
20:41
And the men of Israel turned back, and the men of Benjamin hasted, because they saw that evil had come upon them. |
|
20:41
And when the menº
of Israelº
turned again,ºº
the menº
of Benjaminº
were amazed:ºº
forº
they sawºº
thatº
evilº
was comeºº
uponº
them. |
|
20:42
And they turned to the way of the wilderness from before the children of Israel, and fled: but the battle overtook them, and they from the cities destroyed them in the midst of them. |
|

Therefore they turnedºº
[their backs] beforeº
the menº
of Israelº
untoº
the wayº
of the wilderness;º
but the battleº
overtookºº
them; and them whichº
[came] out of the citiesºº
they destroyedºº
in the midstº
of them. |

20:43
And they cut down Benjamin, and pursued him from Nua closely till they came opposite Gibeah{gr.Gabaa} on the east. |
|
20:43
[Thus] they inclosedºº
the Benjamitesº
round about,ºººº
[and] chasedºº
them, [and] trode them downºº
with easeº
over againstºº
Gibeahº
toward the sunrising.ººº |

20:44
And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men: all these [were] men of might. |

And there fellºº
of Benjaminºº
eighteenºº
thousandº
men;ºº
allº
theseº
[were] menºº
of valour.º |

20:45
And the rest turned, and fled to the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon{gr.Remmon}; and the children of Israel picked off of them five thousand men; and the children of Israel went down after them as far as Gedan, and they smote of them two thousand men. |

And they turnedºº
and fledºº
toward the wildernessº
untoº
the rockº
of Rimmon:º
and they gleanedºº
of them in the highwaysº
fiveº
thousandº
men;º
and pursuedºº
hardº
afterº
them untoº

And all that fell of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men that drew sword in that day: all these were men of might. |

So that allº
which fellºº
thatº

of Benjaminºº
wereº

that drewºº
the sword;ºº
allº
theseº
[were] menºº
of valour.º |

And the rest turned, and fled to the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon{gr.Remmon}, even [six] hundred men; and they sojourned four months in the rock of Rimmon{gr.Remmon}. |

And the children of Israel returned to the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword from the city of Methla, even to the cattle, and every thing that was found in all the cities: and they burnt with fire the cities they found. |

of [every] city,ºº
