 19:1 ¶ Now it came to passº afterº this,ºº that Näçäš נָחָשׁº the kingº of the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº died,ºº and his sonº reignedºº in his stead.º

 19:1 ¶ Now it came to pass after this, that Nachash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

 19:2 And Däwið דָּוִדº said,ºº I will shewºº kindnessº untoº Çänûn חָנוּןº the sonº of Näçäš נָחָשׁ,º becauseº his fatherº shewedºº kindnessº toº me. And Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº messengersº to comfortºº him concerningº his father.º So the servantsº of Däwið דָּוִדº cameºº intoº the landº of the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº toº Çänûn חָנוּן,º to comfortºº him.

 19:2 And Dawid said, I will shew kindness unto Chanun the son of Nachash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And Dawid sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of Dawid came into the land of the children of Ammon to Chanun, to comfort him.

 19:3 But the princesº of the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº saidºº to Çänûn חָנוּן,º Thinkestº thou that Däwið דָּוִדº doth honourººº thy father,º thatº he hath sentºº comfortersºº unto thee? are notº his servantsº comeºº untoº thee forº to search,ºº and to overthrow,ºº and to spy outºº the land?º

 19:3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Chanun, Thinkest thou that Dawid doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

 19:4 Wherefore Çänûn חָנוּןº tookººº Däwið's דָּוִדº servants,º and shavedºº them, and cut offººº their garmentsº in the midstº hard byº their buttocks,º and sent them away.ºº

 19:4 Wherefore Chanun took Dawid's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

 19:5 Then there wentººº [certain], and toldºº Däwið דָּוִדº howº the menºº were served. And he sentºº to meetºº them: forº the menºº wereº greatlyº ashamed.ºº And the kingº said,ºº Tarryºº at Yærîçô יְרִיחוֹº untilºº your beardsº be grown,ºº and [then] return.ºº

 19:5 Then there went [certain], and told Dawid how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Yericho until your beards be grown, and [then] return.

 19:6 ¶ And when the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº sawºº thatº they had made themselves odiousºº toº Däwið דָּוִד,º Çänûn חָנוּןº and the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº sentºº a thousandº talentsº of silverº to hireºº them chariotsº and horsemenº out ofº ´Áram Nahárayim אֲרַם־נַהֲרַיִם,º and out ofº ´Áram Ma`á¢à אֲרַם־מַעֲכָה,ºº and out of Xôvà צוֹבָה.ºº

 19:6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to Dawid, Chanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Aram-Naharayim, and out of Aram-Maakhah, and out of Tzovah.

 19:7 So they hiredºº thirtyº and twoº thousandº chariots,º and the kingº of Ma`á¢à מַעֲכָהº and his people;º who cameºº and pitchedºº beforeº Mêðvä´ מֵידבָא.º And the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº gathered themselves togetherºº from their cities,ºº and cameºº to battle.º

 19:7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maakhah and his people; who came and pitched before Medva. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

 19:8 And when Däwið דָּוִדº heardºº [of it], he sentººº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and allº the hostº of the mighty men.º

 19:8 And when Dawid heard [of it], he sent Yoav, and all the host of the mighty men.

 19:9 And the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº came out,ºº and put the battleº in arrayººº before the gateº of the city:º and the kingsº thatº were comeºº [were] by themselvesº in the field.º

 19:9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come [were] by themselves in the field.

 19:10 Now when Yô´äv יוֹאָבº sawºº thatº the battleºº was setº againstº him beforeº and behind,º he choseº outºº of allºº the choiceºº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and put [them] in arrayºº againstºº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּים.º

 19:10 Now when Yoav saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Yisrael, and put [them] in array against the Arammim.

 19:11 And the restº of the peopleº he deliveredºº unto the handº of ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº his brother,º and they set [themselves] in arrayºº againstºº the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹן.º

 19:11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Avishay his brother, and they set [themselves] in array against the children of Ammon.

 19:12 And he said,ºº Ifº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº be too strongºº forº me, then thou shalt helpºº me: but ifº the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº be too strongºº forº thee, then I will helpºº thee.

 19:12 And he said, If the Arammim be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

 19:13 Be of good courage,ºº and let us behave ourselves valiantlyºº forº our people,º and forº the citiesº of our ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º and let Yähwè יָהוֶהº doºº [that which is] goodº in his sight.º

 19:13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our Elohim: and let Yahweh do [that which is] good in his sight.

 19:14 So Yô´äv יוֹאָבº and the peopleº thatº [were] withº him drew nighºº beforeº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº unto the battle;º and they fledºº beforeºº him.

 19:14 So Yoav and the people that [were] with him drew nigh before the Arammim unto the battle; and they fled before him.

 19:15 And when the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº sawºº thatº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº were fled,ºº theyº likewiseº fledºº beforeºº ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº his brother,º and enteredºº into the city.º Then Yô´äv יוֹאָבº cameºº to Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם.º

 19:15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Arammim were fled, they likewise fled before Avishay his brother, and entered into the city. Then Yoav came to Yerushalaim.

 19:16 ¶ And when the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº sawºº thatº they were put to the worseºº beforeº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º they sentºº messengers,º and drew forthººº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº thatº [were] beyondºº the river:º and Šôfa¢ שׁוֹפַךº the captainº of the hostº of Háðað`ezer הֲדַדעֶזֶרº [went] beforeº them.

 19:16 ¶ And when the Arammim saw that they were put to the worse before Yisrael, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Arammim that [were] beyond the river: and Shofakh the captain of the host of Hadadezer [went] before them.

 19:17 And it was toldºº Däwið דָּוִד;º and he gatheredººº allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and passed overºº Yardën יַרדֵּן,º and cameºº uponº them, and set [the battle] in arrayººº againstº them. So when Däwið דָּוִדº had put the battleº in arrayºº againstºº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּים,º they foughtºº withº him.

 19:17 And it was told Dawid; and he gathered all Yisrael, and passed over Yarden, and came upon them, and set [the battle] in array against them. So when Dawid had put the battle in array against the Arammim, they fought with him.

 19:18 But the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº fledºº beforeºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º and Däwið דָּוִדº slewºº of the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםºº sevenº thousandº [men which fought in] chariots,º and fortyº thousandº footmen,ºº and killedºº Šôfa¢ שׁוֹפַךº the captainº of the host.º

 19:18 But the Arammim fled before Yisrael; and Dawid slew of the Arammim seven thousand [men which fought in] chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shofakh the captain of the host.

 19:19 And when the servantsº of Háðað`ezer הֲדַדעֶזֶרº sawºº thatº they were put to the worseºº beforeº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º they made peaceºº withº Däwið דָּוִד,º and became his servants:ºº neitherº wouldºº the ´Árammîm אֲרַמִּיםº helpººº the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹןº any more.º

 19:19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were put to the worse before Yisrael, they made peace with Dawid, and became his servants: neither would the Arammim help the children of Ammon any more.
