 21:1 ¶ And §ä+än שָׂטָןº stood upºº againstº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and provokedººº Däwið דָּוִדº to numberººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 21:1 ¶ And Satan stood up against Yisrael, and provoked Dawid to number Yisrael.

 21:2 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº and toº the rulersº of the people,º Go,ººº numberººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº from Bæ´ër Ševa` בְּאֵר־שֶׁבַעºº even toº Dän דָּן;º and bringººº the numberº of them toº me, that I may knowºº [it].

 21:2 And Dawid said to Yoav and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Yisrael from Beer-Sheva even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know [it].

 21:3 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº answered,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº make his peopleº an hundredº timesº so many moreºº as theyº [be]: but, my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the king,º [are] they notº allº my ´áðôn's אֲדוֹןº servants?º whyº then doth my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº requireºº this thing?º whyº will he beº a cause of trespassº to Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?º

 21:3 And Yoav answered, Yahweh make his people an hundred times so many more as they [be]: but, my adon the king, [are] they not all my adon's servants? why then doth my adon require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Yisrael?

 21:4 Nevertheless the king'sº wordº prevailedºº againstº Yô´äv יוֹאָב.º Wherefore Yô´äv יוֹאָבº departed,ºº and wentºº throughout allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and cameºº to Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם.º

 21:4 Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Yoav. Wherefore Yoav departed, and went throughout all Yisrael, and came to Yerushalaim.

 21:5 ¶ And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº gaveººº the sumº of the numberº of the peopleº untoº Däwið דָּוִד.º And allº [they of] Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº wereº a thousandº thousandº and an hundredº thousandº menº that drewºº sword:º and Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº [was] fourº hundredº threescore and tenº thousandº menº that drewºº sword.º

 21:5 ¶ And Yoav gave the sum of the number of the people unto Dawid. And all [they of] Yisrael were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Yehudah [was] four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

 21:6 But Lëwî לֵוִיº and Binyämîn בִּניָמִיןº countedºº he notº amongº them: forº the king'sº wordº was abominableºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב.º

 21:6 But Lewi and Binyamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Yoav.

 21:7 And ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº was displeasedººº withº thisº thing;º therefore he smoteººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 21:7 And Elohim was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Yisrael.

 21:8 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º I have sinnedºº greatly,º becauseº I have doneººº thisº thing:º but now,º I beseech thee,º do awayººº the iniquityº of thy servant;º forº I have done veryº foolishly.ººº

 21:8 And Dawid said unto Elohim, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

 21:9 ¶ And Yähwè יָהוֶהº spakeºº untoº Gäð גָּד,º Däwið's דָּוִדº seer,º saying,ºº

 21:9 ¶ And Yahweh spake unto Gad, Dawid's seer, saying,

 21:10 Goººº and tellººº Däwið דָּוִד,º saying,ºº Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Iº offerººº thee threeº [things]: chooseºº thee oneº of them,ººº that I may doºº [it] unto thee.

 21:10 Go and tell Dawid, saying, Thus saith Yahweh, I offer thee three [things]: choose thee one of them, that I may do [it] unto thee.

 21:11 So Gäð גָּדº cameºº toº Däwið דָּוִד,º and saidºº unto him, Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Chooseºº thee

 21:11 So Gad came to Dawid, and said unto him, Thus saith Yahweh, Choose thee

 21:12 Eitherº threeº years'º famine;º orº threeº monthsº to be destroyedºº beforeºº thy foes,º while that the swordº of thine enemiesºº overtakethºº [thee]; orº elseº threeº daysº the swordº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º even the pestilence,º in the land,º and the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº destroyingºº throughout allº the coastsº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º Nowº therefore adviseºº thyself whatº wordº I shall bring againººº to him that sentºº me.

 21:12 Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh [thee]; or else three days the sword of Yahweh, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of Yahweh destroying throughout all the coasts of Yisrael. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

 21:13 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº Gäð גָּד,º I am in a greatº strait:ººº let me fallºº nowº into the handº of Yähwè יָהוֶה;º forº veryº greatº [are] his mercies:º but let me notº fallºº into the handº of man.º

 21:13 And Dawid said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of Yahweh; for very great [are] his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

 21:14 ¶ So Yähwè יָהוֶהº sentºº pestilenceº upon Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º and there fellºº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלºº seventyº thousandº men.º

 21:14 ¶ So Yahweh sent pestilence upon Yisrael: and there fell of Yisrael seventy thousand men.

 21:15 And ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº sentºº an angelº unto Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº to destroyºº it: and as he was destroying,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº beheld,ºº and he repentedºº himº ofº the evil,º and saidºº to the angelº that destroyed,ºº It is enough,º stayºº nowº thine hand.º And the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº stoodºº byº the threshingfloorº of ´Ornän אָרנָןº the Yævûsî יְבוּסִי.º

 21:15 And Elohim sent an angel unto Yerushalaim to destroy it: and as he was destroying, Yahweh beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of Yahweh stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevusi.

 21:16 And Däwið דָּוִדº lifted upººº his eyes,º and sawººº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº standºº betweenº the earthº and the heaven,º having a drawnºº swordº in his handº stretched outºº overº Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם.º Then Däwið דָּוִדº and the eldersº [of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל, who were] clothedºº in sackcloth,º fellºº uponº their faces.º

 21:16 And Dawid lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of Yahweh stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Yerushalaim. Then Dawid and the elders [of Yisrael, who were] clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

 21:17 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º [Is it] notº Iº [that] commandedºº the peopleº to be numbered?ºº even Iº itº is thatº have sinnedºº and done evilºº indeed;ºº but [as for] theseº sheep,º whatº have they done?ºº let thine hand,º I pray thee,º O Yähwè יָהוֶהº my ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º beº on me, and on my father'sº house;º but notº on thy people,º that they should be plagued.º

 21:17 And Dawid said unto Elohim, [Is it] not I [that] commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but [as for] these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O Yahweh my Elohim, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

 21:18 ¶ Then the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº commandedººº Gäð גָּדº to sayºº to Däwið דָּוִד,º thatº Däwið דָּוִדº should go up,ºº and set upºº an altarº unto Yähwè יָהוֶהº in the threshingfloorº of ´Ornän אָרנָןº the Yævûsî יְבוּסִי.º

 21:18 ¶ Then the angel of Yahweh commanded Gad to say to Dawid, that Dawid should go up, and set up an altar unto Yahweh in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevusi.

 21:19 And Däwið דָּוִדº went upºº at the sayingº of Gäð גָּד,º whichº he spakeºº in the nameº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 21:19 And Dawid went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of Yahweh.

 21:20 And ´Ornän אָרנָןº turned back,ºº and sawººº the angel;º and his fourº sonsº withº him hidºº themselves.º Now ´Ornän אָרנָןº was threshingºº wheat.º

 21:20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

 21:21 And as Däwið דָּוִדº cameºº toº ´Ornän אָרנָן,º ´Ornän אָרנָןº lookedºº and sawººº Däwið דָּוִד,º and went outºº ofº the threshingfloor,º and bowedºº himselfº to Däwið דָּוִדº with [his] faceº to the ground.º

 21:21 And as Dawid came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw Dawid, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to Dawid with [his] face to the ground.

 21:22 Then Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº toº ´Ornän אָרנָן,º Grantºº me the placeº of [this] threshingfloor,º that I may buildºº an altarº therein unto Yähwè יָהוֶה:º thou shalt grantºº it me for the fullº price:º that the plagueº may be stayedºº fromºº the people.º

 21:22 Then Dawid said to Ornan, Grant me the place of [this] threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto Yahweh: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

 21:23 And ´Ornän אָרנָןº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Takeºº [it] to thee, and let my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the kingº doºº [that which is] goodº in his eyes:º lo,ºº I giveºº [thee] the oxenº [also] for burnt offerings,º and the threshing instrumentsº for wood,º and the wheatº for the meat offering;º I giveºº it all.º

 21:23 And Ornan said unto Dawid, Take [it] to thee, and let my adon the king do [that which is] good in his eyes: lo, I give [thee] the oxen [also] for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

 21:24 And kingº Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº to ´Ornän אָרנָן,º Nay;º butº I will verilyºº buyºº it for the fullº price:º forº I will notº takeºº [that] whichº [is] thine for Yähwè יָהוֶה,º nor offerºº burnt offeringsº without cost.º

 21:24 And king Dawid said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take [that] which [is] thine for Yahweh, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

 21:25 So Däwið דָּוִדº gaveºº to ´Ornän אָרנָןº for the placeº sixº hundredº shekelsº of goldº by weight.º

 21:25 So Dawid gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

 21:26 And Däwið דָּוִדº builtºº thereº an altarº unto Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and offeredºº burnt offeringsº and peace offerings,º and calledºº uponº Yähwè יָהוֶה;º and he answeredºº him fromº heavenº by fireº uponº the altarº of burnt offering.º

 21:26 And Dawid built there an altar unto Yahweh, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon Yahweh; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

 21:27 And Yähwè יָהוֶהº commandedºº the angel;º and he put upºº his swordº againººº intoº the sheathº thereof.

 21:27 And Yahweh commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

 21:28 ¶ At thatº timeº when Däwið דָּוִדº sawºº thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº had answeredºº him in the threshingfloorº of ´Ornän אָרנָןº the Yævûsî יְבוּסִי,º then he sacrificedºº there.º

 21:28 ¶ At that time when Dawid saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Yevusi, then he sacrificed there.

 21:29 For the tabernacleº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º whichº Möšè מֹשֶׁהº madeºº in the wilderness,º and the altarº of the burnt offering,º [were] at thatº seasonº in the high placeº at Giv`ôn גִּבעוֹן.º

 21:29 For the tabernacle of Yahweh, which Mosheh made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, [were] at that season in the high place at Givon.

 21:30 But Däwið דָּוִדº couldºº notº goººº beforeº it to enquireºº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º forº he was afraidºº becauseºº of the swordº of the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 21:30 But Dawid could not go before it to enquire of Elohim: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.
