 18:1 ¶ And it came to passº [after] manyº days,º that the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº cameº toº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº in the thirdº year,º saying,ºº Go,ººº shewºº thyselfº untoº ´Aç´äv אַחאָב;º and I will sendºº rainº uponºº the earth.º

 18:1 ¶ And it came to pass [after] many days, that the word of Yahweh came to Eliyyah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Achav; and I will send rain upon the earth.

 18:2 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº wentººº to shewºº himselfº untoº ´Aç´äv אַחאָב.º And [there was] a soreº famineº in Šömrôn שֹׁמרוֹן.º

 18:2 And Eliyyah went to shew himself unto Achav. And [there was] a sore famine in Shomron.

 18:3 And ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº calledººº `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָה,º whichº [was] the governorº of [his] house.º (Now `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָהº fearedºººº Yähwè יָהוֶהº greatly:º

 18:3 And Achav called Ovadyah, which [was] the governor of [his] house. (Now Ovadyah feared Yahweh greatly:

 18:4 For it wasº [so], when ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº cut offººº the prophetsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º that `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָהº tookºº an hundredº prophets,º and hidºº them by fiftyºº in a cave,º and fedºº them with breadº and water.)º

 18:4 For it was [so], when Izevel cut off the prophets of Yahweh, that Ovadyah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

 18:5 And ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº saidºº untoº `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָה,º Goººº into the land,º untoº allº fountainsº of water,º and untoº allº brooks:º peradventureº we may findºº grassº to saveºº the horsesº and mulesº alive,ºººº that we loseºº notº all the beasts.ºº

 18:5 And Achav said unto Ovadyah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

 18:6 So they dividedººº the landº between them to passº throughoutºº it: ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº wentºº oneº wayº by himself,º and `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָהº wentºº anotherº wayº by himself.º

 18:6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Achav went one way by himself, and Ovadyah went another way by himself.

 18:7 ¶ And as `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָהº wasº in the way,º behold,º ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº metººº him: and he knewºº him, and fellºº onº his face,º and said,ºº [Art] thouº thatº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה?º

 18:7 ¶ And as Ovadyah was in the way, behold, Eliyyah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, [Art] thou that my adon Eliyyah?

 18:8 And he answeredºº him, Iº [am]: go,ººº tellºº thy ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º Behold,º ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº [is here].

 18:8 And he answered him, I [am]: go, tell thy adon, Behold, Eliyyah [is here].

 18:9 And he said,ºº Whatº have I sinned,ºº thatº thouº wouldest deliverººº thy servantº into the handº of ´Aç´äv אַחאָב,º to slayºº me?

 18:9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Achav, to slay me?

 18:10 [As] Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº liveth,º there isº noºº nationº or kingdom,º whitherºº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº hath notº sentºº to seekºº thee: and when they said,ºº [He is] notº [there]; he took an oathºº ofº the kingdomº and nation,º thatº they foundºº thee not.º

 18:10 [As] Yahweh thy Elohim liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my adon hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, [He is] not [there]; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

 18:11 And nowº thouº sayest,ºº Go,ººº tellºº thy ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º Behold,º ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº [is here].

 18:11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy adon, Behold, Eliyyah [is here].

 18:12 And it shall come to pass,º [as soon as] Iº am goneººº fromºº thee, that the Spiritº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº shall carryºº thee whitherºº I knowºº not;º and [so] when I comeºº and tellºº ´Aç´äv אַחאָב,º and he cannotº findºº thee, he shall slayºº me: but I thy servantº fearººº Yähwè יָהוֶהº from my youth.ºº

 18:12 And it shall come to pass, [as soon as] I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of Yahweh shall carry thee whither I know not; and [so] when I come and tell Achav, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear Yahweh from my youth.

 18:13 Was it notº toldºº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןºº whatº I didºº when ´Îzevel אִיזֶבֶלº slewººº the prophetsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º how I hidºº an hundredº menº of Yähwè's יָהוֶהº prophetsººº by fiftyºº in a cave,º and fedºº them with breadº and water?º

 18:13 Was it not told my adon what I did when Izevel slew the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid an hundred men of Yahweh's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

 18:14 And nowº thouº sayest,ºº Go,ººº tellºº thy ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º Behold,º ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº [is here]: and he shall slayºº me.

 18:14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy adon, Behold, Eliyyah [is here]: and he shall slay me.

 18:15 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº said,ºº [As] Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹתº liveth,º beforeº whomº I stand,ºº I will surelyº shewºº myselfº untoº him to day.º

 18:15 And Eliyyah said, [As] Yahweh Tzevaoth liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

 18:16 So `Övaðyà עֹבַדיָהº wentººº to meetººº ´Aç´äv אַחאָב,º and toldºº him: and ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº wentººº to meetººº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה.º

 18:16 So Ovadyah went to meet Achav, and told him: and Achav went to meet Eliyyah.

 18:17 ¶ And it came to pass,º when ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº sawººº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה,º that ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº saidºº untoº him, [Art] thouº he thatº troublethºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?º

 18:17 ¶ And it came to pass, when Achav saw Eliyyah, that Achav said unto him, [Art] thou he that troubleth Yisrael?

 18:18 And he answered,ºº I have notº troubledººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º butºº thou,º and thy father'sº house,º in that ye have forsakenººº the commandmentsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and thou hast followedºººº Bæ`älîm בְּעָלִים.º

 18:18 And he answered, I have not troubled Yisrael; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of Yahweh, and thou hast followed Bealim.

 18:19 Nowº therefore send,ºº [and] gatherºº toº meº allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº untoº mountº Carmel כַּרמֶל,º and the prophetsº of Bä`al בָּעַלº fourº hundredº and fifty,º and the prophetsº of the grovesº fourº hundred,º which eatºº at ´Îzevel's אִיזֶבֶלº table.º

 18:19 Now therefore send, [and] gather to me all Yisrael unto mount Karmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Izevel's table.

 18:20 So ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº sentºº unto allº the childrenº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and gatheredºº the prophetsº togetherºººº untoº mountº Carmel כַּרמֶל.º

 18:20 So Achav sent unto all the children of Yisrael, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Karmel.

 18:21 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº cameºº untoº allº the people,º and said,ºº How longººº haltºº yeº betweenº twoº opinions?º ifº Yähwè יָהוֶהº [be] ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º followºº him: but ifº Bä`al בָּעַל,º [then] followºººº him. And the peopleº answeredºº him notº a word.º

 18:21 And Eliyyah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if Yahweh [be] Elohim, follow him: but if Baal, [then] follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

 18:22 Then saidºº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº untoº the people,º I,º [even] I only,º remainºº a prophetº of Yähwè יָהוֶה;º but Bä`al's בָּעַלº prophetsº [are] fourº hundredº and fiftyº men.º

 18:22 Then said Eliyyah unto the people, I, [even] I only, remain a prophet of Yahweh; but Baal's prophets [are] four hundred and fifty men.

 18:23 Let them therefore giveºº us twoº bullocks;º and let them chooseºº oneº bullockº for themselves, and cut it in pieces,ºº and layºº [it] onº wood,º and putºº noº fireº [under]: and Iº will dressººº the otherº bullock,º and layºº [it] onº wood,º and putºº noº fireº [under]:

 18:23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay [it] on wood, and put no fire [under]: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay [it] on wood, and put no fire [under]:

 18:24 And callºº ye on the nameº of your ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º and Iº will callºº on the nameº of Yähwè יָהוֶה:º and the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº thatº answerethºº by fire,º let himº beº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º And allº the peopleº answeredºº and said,ºº It is wellº spoken.º

 18:24 And call ye on the name of your elohim, and I will call on the name of Yahweh: and the Elohim that answereth by fire, let him be Elohim. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

 18:25 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº saidºº unto the prophetsº of Bä`al בָּעַל,º Chooseºº you oneº bullockº for yourselves, and dressºº [it] first;º forº yeº [are] many;º and callºº on the nameº of your ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º but putºº noº fireº [under].

 18:25 And Eliyyah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress [it] first; for ye [are] many; and call on the name of your elohim, but put no fire [under].

 18:26 And they tookººº the bullockº whichº was givenºº them, and they dressedºº [it], and calledºº on the nameº of Bä`al בָּעַלº from morningºº even untilº noon,º saying,ºº O Bä`al בָּעַל,º hearºº us. But [there was] noº voice,º norº any that answered.ºº And they leapedºº uponº the altarº whichº was made.ºº

 18:26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed [it], and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But [there was] no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

 18:27 And it came to passº at noon,º that ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº mockedºº them, and said,ºº Cryºº aloud:ºº forº heº [is] an ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים;º eitherº he is talking,º orº he is pursuing,º orº he is in a journey,º [or] peradventureº heº sleepeth,º and must be awaked.ºº

 18:27 And it came to pass at noon, that Eliyyah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he [is] an elohim; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, [or] peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

 18:28 And they criedºº aloud,ºº and cutºº themselvesº after their mannerº with knivesº and lancets,º tillº the bloodº gushed outºº uponº them.

 18:28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

 18:29 And it came to pass,º when middayº was past,ºº and they prophesiedºº untilº the [time] of the offeringºº of the [evening] sacrifice,º that [there was] neitherº voice,º norº any to answer,ºº norº any that regarded.º

 18:29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the [time] of the offering of the [evening] sacrifice, that [there was] neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

 18:30 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº saidºº unto allº the people,º Come nearºº untoº me. And allº the peopleº came nearºº untoº him. And he repairedººº the altarº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº [that was] broken down.ºº

 18:30 And Eliyyah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of Yahweh [that was] broken down.

 18:31 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº tookºº twelveºº stones,º according to the numberº of the tribesº of the sonsº of Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹב,º untoº whomº the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº came,º saying,ºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº shall beº thy name:º

 18:31 And Eliyyah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Yaaqov, unto whom the word of Yahweh came, saying, Yisrael shall be thy name:

 18:32 And withº the stonesº he builtºº an altarº in the nameº of Yähwè יָהוֶה:º and he madeºº a trenchº aboutº the altar,º as great as would containº two measuresº of seed.º

 18:32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of Yahweh: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

 18:33 And he putººº the woodº in order,ºº and cutººº the bullockº in pieces, and laidºº [him] onº the wood,º and said,ºº Fillºº fourº barrelsº with water,º and pourºº [it] onº the burnt sacrifice,º and onº the wood.º

 18:33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid [him] on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour [it] on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

 18:34 And he said,ºº Do [it] the second time.ºº And they did [it] the second time.ºº And he said,ºº Do [it] the third time.ºº And they did [it] the third time.ºº

 18:34 And he said, Do [it] the second time. And they did [it] the second time. And he said, Do [it] the third time. And they did [it] the third time.

 18:35 And the waterº ranººº round aboutº the altar;º and he filledººº the trenchº alsoº with water.º

 18:35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

 18:36 And it came to passº at [the time of] the offeringºº of the [evening] sacrifice,º that ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº the prophetº came near,ºº and said,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of ´Avrähäm אַברָהָם,º Yixçäk יִצחָק,º and of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º let it be knownºº this dayº thatº thouº [art] ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and [that] Iº [am] thy servant,º and [that] I have doneººº allº theseº thingsº at thy word.º

 18:36 And it came to pass at [the time of] the offering of the [evening] sacrifice, that Eliyyah the prophet came near, and said, Yahweh Elohim of Avraham, Yitzchaq, and of Yisrael, let it be known this day that thou [art] Elohim in Yisrael, and [that] I [am] thy servant, and [that] I have done all these things at thy word.

 18:37 Hearºº me, O Yähwè יָהוֶה,º hearºº me, that thisº peopleº may knowºº thatº thouº [art] Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º and [that] thouº hast turnedººº their heartº backºº again.º

 18:37 Hear me, O Yahweh, hear me, that this people may know that thou [art] Yahweh Elohim, and [that] thou hast turned their heart back again.

 18:38 Then the fireº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº fell,ºº and consumedººº the burnt sacrifice,º and the wood,º and the stones,º and the dust,º and licked upºº the waterº thatº [was] in the trench.º

 18:38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that [was] in the trench.

 18:39 And when allº the peopleº sawºº [it], they fellºº onº their faces:º and they said,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º heº [is] the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים;º Yähwè יָהוֶה,º heº [is] the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 18:39 And when all the people saw [it], they fell on their faces: and they said, Yahweh, he [is] the Elohim; Yahweh, he [is] the Elohim.

 18:40 And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº saidºº unto them, Takeººº the prophetsº of Bä`al בָּעַל;º let notº oneº of themº escape.ºº And they tookºº them: and ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº brought them downºº toº the brookº Kîšôn קִישׁוֹן,º and slewºº them there.º

 18:40 And Eliyyah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Eliyyah brought them down to the brook Qishon, and slew them there.

 18:41 ¶ And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº saidºº unto ´Aç´äv אַחאָב,º Get thee up,ºº eatºº and drink;ºº forº [there is] a soundº of abundanceº of rain.º

 18:41 ¶ And Eliyyah said unto Achav, Get thee up, eat and drink; for [there is] a sound of abundance of rain.

 18:42 So ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº went upºº to eatºº and to drink.ºº And ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּהº went upºº toº the topº of Carmel כַּרמֶל;º and he cast himself downºº upon the earth,º and putºº his faceº betweenº his knees,º

 18:42 So Achav went up to eat and to drink. And Eliyyah went up to the top of Karmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

 18:43 And saidºº toº his servant,º Go upºº now,º lookºº towardº the sea.º And he went up,ºº and looked,ºº and said,ºº [There is] nothing.ºº And he said,ºº Go againºº sevenº times.º

 18:43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, [There is] nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

 18:44 And it came to passº at the seventh time,º that he said,ºº Behold,º there arisethºº a littleº cloudº out of the sea,ºº like a man'sº hand.º And he said,ºº Go up,ºº sayºº untoº ´Aç´äv אַחאָב,º Prepareºº [thy chariot], and get thee down,ºº that the rainº stopºº thee not.º

 18:44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Achav, Prepare [thy chariot], and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

 18:45 And it came to passº in the mean while,ºº that the heavenº was blackºº with cloudsº and wind,º and there wasº a greatº rain.º And ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº rode,ºº and wentººº to Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל.º

 18:45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Achav rode, and went to Yizreel.

 18:46 And the handº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº wasº onº ´Ëliyyà אֵלִיָּה;º and he girded upºº his loins,º and ranºº beforeº ´Aç´äv אַחאָבº toº the entranceºº of Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל.º

 18:46 And the hand of Yahweh was on Eliyyah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Achav to the entrance of Yizreel.
