 22:1 ¶ And the childrenº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº set forward,ºº and pitchedºº in the plainsº of Mô´äv מוֹאָבº on this sideºº Yardën יַרדֵּןº [by] Yærîçô יְרִיחוֹ.º

 22:1 ¶ And the children of Yisrael set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moav on this side Yarden [by] Yericho.

 22:2 ¶ And Bäläk בָּלָקº the sonº of Xippôr צִפּוֹרº sawººº allº thatº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº had doneºº to the ´Émörîm אֱמֹרִים.º

 22:2 ¶ And Balaq the son of Tzippor saw all that Yisrael had done to the Emorim.

 22:3 And Mô´äv מוֹאָבº was soreº afraidººº ofºº the people,º becauseº theyº [were] many:º and Mô´äv מוֹאָבº was distressedºº becauseºº ofº the childrenº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 22:3 And Moav was sore afraid of the people, because they [were] many: and Moav was distressed because of the children of Yisrael.

 22:4 And Mô´äv מוֹאָבº saidºº untoº the eldersº of Miðyän מִדיָן,º Nowº shall this companyº lick upººº allº [that are] round aboutº us, as the oxº licketh upººº the grassº of the field.º And Bäläk בָּלָקº the sonº of Xippôr צִפּוֹרº [was] kingº of the Mô´ävîm מוֹאָבִיםº at thatº time.º

 22:4 And Moav said unto the elders of Midyan, Now shall this company lick up all [that are] round about us, as the ox licketh up the grass of the field. And Balaq the son of Tzippor [was] king of the Moavim at that time.

 22:5 He sentºº messengersº therefore untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָםº the sonº of Bæ`ôr בְּעוֹרº to Pæ±ôr פְּתוֹר,º whichº [is] byº the riverº of the landº of the childrenº of his people,º to callºº him, saying,ºº Behold,º there is a peopleº come outºº from Mixrayim מִצרַיִם:ºº behold,º they coverººº the faceº of the earth,º and theyº abideºº over againstºº me:

 22:5 He sent messengers therefore unto Bilam the son of Beor to Pethor, which [is] by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Mitzrayim: behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me:

 22:6 Comeººº nowº therefore, I pray thee,º curseºº meº thisº people;º forº theyº [are] too mightyº forºº me: peradventureº I shall prevail,ºº [that] we may smiteºº them, and [that] I may drive them outºº ofº the land:º forº I wotººº that he whomº thou blessestºº [is] blessed,ºº and he whomº thou cursestºº is cursed.ºº

 22:6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they [are] too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, [that] we may smite them, and [that] I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest [is] blessed, and he whom thou cursest is cursed.

 22:7 And the eldersº of Mô´äv מוֹאָבº and the eldersº of Miðyän מִדיָןº departedººº with the rewards of divinationº in their hand;º and they cameºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and spakeºº untoº him the wordsº of Bäläk בָּלָק.º

 22:7 And the elders of Moav and the elders of Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bilam, and spake unto him the words of Balaq.

 22:8 And he saidºº untoº them, Lodgeºº hereº this night,º and I will bringºº you wordº again,ºº asº Yähwè יָהוֶהº shall speakºº untoº me: and the princesº of Mô´äv מוֹאָבº abodeºº withº Bil`äm בִּלעָם.º

 22:8 And he said unto them, Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Yahweh shall speak unto me: and the princes of Moav abode with Bilam.

 22:9 And ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº cameºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and said,ºº Whatº menºº [are] theseº withº thee?

 22:9 And Elohim came unto Bilam, and said, What men [are] these with thee?

 22:10 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº saidºº untoº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º Bäläk בָּלָקº the sonº of Xippôr צִפּוֹר,º kingº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב,º hath sentºº untoº me, [saying],

 22:10 And Bilam said unto Elohim, Balaq the son of Tzippor, king of Moav, hath sent unto me, [saying],

 22:11 Behold,º [there is] a peopleº come outºº of Mixrayim מִצרַיִם,ºº which coverethººº the faceº of the earth:º comeººº now,º curseºº me them; peradventureº I shall be ableºº to overcomeºº them, and drive them out.ºº

 22:11 Behold, [there is] a people come out of Mitzrayim, which covereth the face of the earth: come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.

 22:12 And ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº saidºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º Thou shalt notº goººº withº them; thou shalt notº curseººº the people:º forº theyº [are] blessed.ºº

 22:12 And Elohim said unto Bilam, Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people: for they [are] blessed.

 22:13 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº rose upºº in the morning,º and saidºº untoº the princesº of Bäläk בָּלָק,º Getººº you intoº your land:º forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº refusethºº to give me leaveºº to goºº withº you.

 22:13 And Bilam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balaq, Get you into your land: for Yahweh refuseth to give me leave to go with you.

 22:14 And the princesº of Mô´äv מוֹאָבº rose up,ºº and they wentºº untoº Bäläk בָּלָק,º and said,ºº Bil`äm בִּלעָםº refusethºº to comeºº withº us.

 22:14 And the princes of Moav rose up, and they went unto Balaq, and said, Bilam refuseth to come with us.

 22:15 ¶ And Bäläk בָּלָקº sentºº yetº againºº princes,º more,º and more honourableºº than they.ºº

 22:15 ¶ And Balaq sent yet again princes, more, and more honourable than they.

 22:16 And they cameºº toº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and saidºº to him, Thusº saithºº Bäläk בָּלָקº the sonº of Xippôr צִפּוֹר,º Let nothing,º I pray thee,º hinderºº thee from comingººº untoº me:

 22:16 And they came to Bilam, and said to him, Thus saith Balaq the son of Tzippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:

 22:17 Forº I will promoteºº thee unto veryº greatºº honour,ººº and I will doºº whatsoeverºº thou sayestºº untoº me: comeººº therefore, I pray thee,º curseºº meº thisº people.º

 22:17 For I will promote thee unto very great honour, and I will do whatsoever thou sayest unto me: come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.

 22:18 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº answeredºº and saidºº untoº the servantsº of Bäläk בָּלָק,º Ifº Bäläk בָּלָקº would giveºº me his houseº fullº of silverº and gold,º I cannotººº go beyondººº the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº my ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º to doºº lessº orº more.º

 22:18 And Bilam answered and said unto the servants of Balaq, If Balaq would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Yahweh my Elohim, to do less or more.

 22:19 Nowº therefore, I pray you,º tarryºº yeº alsoº hereº this night,º that I may knowºº whatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº will sayºº untoº me more.ºº

 22:19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what Yahweh will say unto me more.

 22:20 And ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº cameºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָםº at night,º and saidºº unto him, Ifº the menºº comeºº to callºº thee, rise up,ºº [and] goººº withº them; but yetºº the wordº whichº I shall sayºº untoº thee, that shalt thou do.ºº

 22:20 And Elohim came unto Bilam at night, and said unto him, If the men come to call thee, rise up, [and] go with them; but yet the word which I shall say unto thee, that shalt thou do.

 22:21 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº rose upºº in the morning,º and saddledººº his ass,º and wentººº withº the princesº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב.º

 22:21 And Bilam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moav.

 22:22 ¶ And ´Élöhîm's אֱלֹהִיםº angerº was kindledºº becauseº heº went:ºº and the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº stoodºº in the wayº for an adversaryº against him. Now heº was ridingºº uponº his ass,º and his twoº servantsº [were] withº him.

 22:22 ¶ And Elohim's anger was kindled because he went: and the angel of Yahweh stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants [were] with him.

 22:23 And the assº sawººº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº standingºº in the way,º and his swordº drawnºº in his hand:º and the assº turned asideºº out ofº the way,º and wentººº into the field:º and Bil`äm בִּלעָםº smoteººº the ass,º to turnºº her into the way.º

 22:23 And the ass saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field: and Bilam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

 22:24 But the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº stoodºº in a pathº of the vineyards,º a wallº [being] on this side,ºº and a wallº on that side.ºº

 22:24 But the angel of Yahweh stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall [being] on this side, and a wall on that side.

 22:25 And when the assº sawººº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º she thrustºº herselfº untoº the wall,º and crushedººº Bil`äm's בִּלעָםº footº againstº the wall:º and he smoteºº her again.ºº

 22:25 And when the ass saw the angel of Yahweh, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Bilam's foot against the wall: and he smote her again.

 22:26 And the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº wentºº further,ºº and stoodºº in a narrowº place,º whereº [was] noº wayº to turnºº either to the right handº or to the left.º

 22:26 And the angel of Yahweh went further, and stood in a narrow place, where [was] no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.

 22:27 And when the assº sawººº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º she fell downºº underº Bil`äm בִּלעָם:º and Bil`äm's בִּלעָםº angerº was kindled,ºº and he smoteººº the assº with a staff.º

 22:27 And when the ass saw the angel of Yahweh, she fell down under Bilam: and Bilam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff.

 22:28 And Yähwè יָהוֶהº openedººº the mouthº of the ass,º and she saidºº unto Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º Whatº have I doneºº unto thee, thatº thou hast smittenºº me theseº threeº times?º

 22:28 And Yahweh opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Bilam, What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?

 22:29 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº saidºº unto the ass,º Becauseº thou hast mockedºº me: I wouldº there wereº a swordº in mine hand,º forº nowº would I killºº thee.

 22:29 And Bilam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now would I kill thee.

 22:30 And the assº saidºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º [Am] notº Iº thine ass,º uponº whichº thou hast riddenºº ever sinceºº [I was] thine untoº thisº day?º was I everºº wontºº to doº soººº unto thee? And he said,ºº Nay.º

 22:30 And the ass said unto Bilam, [Am] not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since [I was] thine unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee? And he said, Nay.

 22:31 Then Yähwè יָהוֶהº openedººº the eyesº of Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and he sawººº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº standingºº in the way,º and his swordº drawnºº in his hand:º and he bowed downºº his head,º and fell flatºº on his face.º

 22:31 Then Yahweh opened the eyes of Bilam, and he saw the angel of Yahweh standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.

 22:32 And the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº untoº him, Whereforeºº hast thou smittenººº thine assº theseº threeº times?º behold,º Iº went outºº to withstandº thee, becauseº [thy] wayº is perverseºº beforeº me:

 22:32 And the angel of Yahweh said unto him, Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I went out to withstand thee, because [thy] way is perverse before me:

 22:33 And the assº sawºº me, and turnedºº fromº meº theseº threeº times:º unlessº she had turnedºº fromºº me,º surelyº nowº alsoº I had slainºº thee, and saved her alive.ººº

 22:33 And the ass saw me, and turned from me these three times: unless she had turned from me, surely now also I had slain thee, and saved her alive.

 22:34 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº saidºº untoº the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º I have sinned;ºº forº I knewºº notº thatº thouº stoodestºº in the wayº againstºº me: nowº therefore, ifº it displeaseºº thee,ººº I will get me back again.ºº

 22:34 And Bilam said unto the angel of Yahweh, I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me: now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back again.

 22:35 And the angelº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º Goººº withº the men:ºº but onlyºº the wordº thatº I shall speakºº untoº thee, that thou shalt speak.ºº So Bil`äm בִּלעָםº wentººº withº the princesº of Bäläk בָּלָק.º

 22:35 And the angel of Yahweh said unto Bilam, Go with the men: but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak. So Bilam went with the princes of Balaq.

 22:36 ¶ And when Bäläk בָּלָקº heardºº thatº Bil`äm בִּלעָםº was come,ºº he went outºº to meetºº him untoº a cityº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב,º whichº [is] inº the borderº of ´Arnôn אַרנוֹן,º whichº [is] in the utmostº coast.º

 22:36 ¶ And when Balaq heard that Bilam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moav, which [is] in the border of Arnon, which [is] in the utmost coast.

 22:37 And Bäläk בָּלָקº saidºº untoº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º Did I notº earnestlyºº sendºº untoº thee to callºº thee? whereforeº camestºº thou notº untoº me? am I not ableººº indeedº to promote thee to honour?ºº

 22:37 And Balaq said unto Bilam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

 22:38 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº saidºº untoº Bäläk בָּלָק,º Lo,º I am comeºº untoº thee: have I nowº any powerºº at allºº to sayºº any thing?º the wordº thatº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº puttethºº in my mouth,º that shall I speak.ºº

 22:38 And Bilam said unto Balaq, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that Elohim putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.

 22:39 And Bil`äm בִּלעָםº wentººº withº Bäläk בָּלָק,º and they cameºº unto Kirya± Çuxô± קִריַת־חֻצוֹת.ºº

 22:39 And Bilam went with Balaq, and they came unto Qiryath-Chutzoth.

 22:40 And Bäläk בָּלָקº offeredºº oxenº and sheep,º and sentºº to Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and to the princesº thatº [were] withº him.

 22:40 And Balaq offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Bilam, and to the princes that [were] with him.

 22:41 And it came to passº on the morrow,º that Bäläk בָּלָקº tookººº Bil`äm בִּלעָם,º and brought him upºº into the high placesº of Bä`al בָּעַל,ºº that thenceºº he might seeºº the utmostº [part] of the people.º

 22:41 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balaq took Bilam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost [part] of the people.
