 51:1 ¶ Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה;º Behold,º I will raise upºº againstº Bävel בָּבֶל,º and againstº them that dwellºº in the midstº of them that rise upºº against me, a destroyingºº wind;º

 51:1 ¶ Thus saith Yahweh; Behold, I will raise up against Bavel, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;

 51:2 And will sendºº unto Bävel בָּבֶלº fanners,ºº that shall fanºº her, and shall emptyººº her land:º forº in the dayº of troubleº they shall beº againstº her round about.ºº

 51:2 And will send unto Bavel fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.

 51:3 Againstº [him that] bendethºº let the archerºº bendºº his bow,º and againstº [him that] lifteth himself upºº in his brigandine:º and spareºº ye notº her young men;º destroy ye utterlyºº allº her host.º

 51:3 Against [him that] bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against [him that] lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.

 51:4 Thus the slainº shall fallºº in the landº of the Ca$dîm כַּשׂדִּים,º and [they that are] thrust throughºº in her streets.º

 51:4 Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Kasdim, and [they that are] thrust through in her streets.

 51:5 Forº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº [hath] notº [been] forsaken,º nor Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº of his ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,ºº of Yähwè יָהוֶהºº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת;º thoughº their landº was filledºº with sinº against the Holy Oneºº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 51:5 For Yisrael [hath] not [been] forsaken, nor Yehudah of his Elohim, of Yahweh Tzevaoth; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Yisrael.

 51:6 Fleeº outºº of the midstºº of Bävel בָּבֶל,º and deliverºº every manº his soul:º be notº cut offºº in her iniquity;º forº thisº [is] the timeº of Yähwè's יָהוֶהº vengeance;º he will renderºº unto her a recompence.º

 51:6 Flee out of the midst of Bavel, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this [is] the time of Yahweh's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.

 51:7 Bävel בָּבֶלº [hath been] a goldenº cupº in Yähwè's יָהוֶהº hand,º that made allº the earthº drunken:ºº the nationsº have drunkenºº of her wine;ºº thereforeºº the nationsº are mad.ºº

 51:7 Bavel [hath been] a golden cup in Yahweh's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.

 51:8 Bävel בָּבֶלº is suddenlyº fallenºº and destroyed:ºº howlºº forº her; takeºº balmº for her pain,º if so beº she may be healed.ºº

 51:8 Bavel is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.

 51:9 We would have healedººº Bävel בָּבֶל,º but she is notº healed:ºº forsakeºº her, and let us goººº every oneº into his own country:º forº her judgmentº reachethºº untoº heaven,º and is lifted upºº [even] toº the skies.º

 51:9 We would have healed Bavel, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up [even] to the skies.

 51:10 Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath brought forthººº our righteousness:º come,ºº and let us declareºº in Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןºº the workº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº our ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 51:10 Yahweh hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Tziyyon the work of Yahweh our Elohim.

 51:11 Make brightºº the arrows;º gatherºº the shields:º Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath raised upººº the spiritº of the kingsº of the Mäðîm מָדִים:º forº his deviceº [is] againstº Bävel בָּבֶל,º to destroyºº it; becauseº itº [is] the vengeanceº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º the vengeanceº of his temple.º

 51:11 Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: Yahweh hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Madim: for his device [is] against Bavel, to destroy it; because it [is] the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple.

 51:12 Set upºº the standardº uponº the wallsº of Bävel בָּבֶל,º make the watchº strong,ºº set upºº the watchmen,ºº prepareºº the ambushes:ºº forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath bothº devisedºº andº doneººº that whichº he spakeºº againstº the inhabitantsºº of Bävel בָּבֶל.º

 51:12 Set up the standard upon the walls of Bavel, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for Yahweh hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Bavel.

 51:13 O thou that dwellestºººº uponº manyº waters,º abundantº in treasures,º thine endº is come,ºº [and] the measureº of thy covetousness.º

 51:13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, [and] the measure of thy covetousness.

 51:14 Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹתº hath swornºº by himself,º [saying], Surelyºº I will fillºº thee with men,º as with caterpillers;º and they shall lift upºº a shoutº againstº thee.

 51:14 Yahweh Tzevaoth hath sworn by himself, [saying], Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.

 51:15 He hath madeºº the earthº by his power,º he hath establishedºº the worldº by his wisdom,º and hath stretched outºº the heavenº by his understanding.º

 51:15 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.

 51:16 When he utterethºº [his] voice,º [there is] a multitudeº of watersº in the heavens;º and he causeth the vapoursº to ascendºº from the endsºº of the earth:º he makethºº lightningsº with rain,º and bringeth forthºº the windº out of his treasures.ºº

 51:16 When he uttereth [his] voice, [there is] a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.

 51:17 Everyº manº is brutishºº by [his] knowledge;ºº everyº founderºº is confoundedºº by the graven image:ºº forº his molten imageº [is] falsehood,º and [there is] noº breathº in them.

 51:17 Every man is brutish by [his] knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image [is] falsehood, and [there is] no breath in them.

 51:18 Theyº [are] vanity,º the workº of errors:º in the timeº of their visitationº they shall perish.ºº

 51:18 They [are] vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.

 51:19 The portionº of Ya`áköv יַעֲקֹבº [is] notº like them;º forº heº [is] the formerºº of all things:º and [Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל is] the rodº of his inheritance:º Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹתº [is] his name.º

 51:19 The portion of Yaaqov [is] not like them; for he [is] the former of all things: and [Yisrael is] the rod of his inheritance: Yahweh Tzevaoth [is] his name.

 51:20 Thouº [art] my battle axeº [and] weaponsº of war:º for with thee will I break in piecesºº the nations,º and with thee will I destroyºº kingdoms;º

 51:20 Thou [art] my battle axe [and] weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;

 51:21 And with thee will I break in piecesºº the horseº and his rider;ºº and with thee will I break in piecesºº the chariotº and his rider;ºº

 51:21 And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;

 51:22 With thee also will I break in piecesºº manº and woman;º and with thee will I break in piecesºº oldº and young;º and with thee will I break in piecesºº the young manº and the maid;º

 51:22 With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid;

 51:23 I will also break in piecesºº with thee the shepherdºº and his flock;º and with thee will I break in piecesºº the husbandmanº and his yoke of oxen;º and with thee will I break in piecesºº captainsº and rulers.º

 51:23 I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.

 51:24 And I will renderºº unto Bävel בָּבֶלº and to allº the inhabitantsºº of Ca$dîm כַּשׂדִּיםºº allº their evilº thatº they have doneºº in Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןº in your sight,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:24 And I will render unto Bavel and to all the inhabitants of Kasdim all their evil that they have done in Tziyyon in your sight, saith Yahweh.

 51:25 Behold,º I [am] againstº thee, O destroyingº mountain,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º which destroyestººº allº the earth:º and I will stretch outººº mine handº uponº thee, and roll thee downºº fromº the rocks,º and will makeºº thee a burntº mountain.º

 51:25 Behold, I [am] against thee, O destroying mountain, saith Yahweh, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

 51:26 And they shall notº takeºº ofº thee a stoneº for a corner,º nor a stoneº for foundations;º butº thou shalt beº desolateº for ever,º saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:26 And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith Yahweh.

 51:27 Set ye upºº a standardº in the land,º blowºº the trumpetº among the nations,º prepareºº the nationsº againstº her, call togetherºº againstº her the kingdomsº of ´Árärä+ אֲרָרָט,º Minnî מִנִּי,º and ´Ašcánaz אַשׁכֲּנַז;º appointºº a captainº againstº her; cause the horsesº to come upºº as the roughº caterpillers.º

 51:27 Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkanaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.

 51:28 Prepareºº againstº her the nationsº withº the kingsº of the Mäðîm מָדִים,ºº the captainsº thereof, and allº the rulersº thereof, and allº the landº of his dominion.º

 51:28 Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Madim, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.

 51:29 And the landº shall trembleºº and sorrow:ºº forº every purposeº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº shall be performedºº againstº Bävel בָּבֶל,º to makeººº the landº of Bävel בָּבֶלº a desolationº withoutºº an inhabitant.ºº

 51:29 And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of Yahweh shall be performed against Bavel, to make the land of Bavel a desolation without an inhabitant.

 51:30 The mighty menº of Bävel בָּבֶלº have forbornºº to fight,ºº they have remainedºº in [their] holds:º their mightº hath failed;ºº they becameº as women:º they have burnedºº her dwellingplaces;º her barsº are broken.ºº

 51:30 The mighty men of Bavel have forborn to fight, they have remained in [their] holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.

 51:31 One postºº shall runºº to meetºº another,ºº and one messengerºº to meetºº another,ºº to shewºº the kingº of Bävel בָּבֶלº thatº his cityº is takenºº at [one] end,ºº

 51:31 One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Bavel that his city is taken at [one] end,

 51:32 And that the passagesº are stopped,ºº and the reedsº they have burnedºº with fire,º and the menºº of warº are affrighted.ºº

 51:32 And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted.

 51:33 Forº thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת,º the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º The daughterº of Bävel בָּבֶלº [is] like a threshingfloor,º [it is] timeº to threshºº her: yetº a little while,º and the timeº of her harvestº shall come.ºº

 51:33 For thus saith Yahweh Tzevaoth, the Elohim of Yisrael; The daughter of Bavel [is] like a threshingfloor, [it is] time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.

 51:34 Nævû¢aðre´xxar נְבוּכַדרֶאצַּרº the kingº of Bävel בָּבֶלº hath devouredºº me, he hath crushedºº me, he hath madeºº me an emptyº vessel,º he hath swallowed me upºº like a dragon,º he hath filledºº his bellyº with my delicates,ºº he hath cast me out.ºº

 51:34 Nevukhadretztzar the king of Bavel hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.

 51:35 The violenceº done to me and to my fleshº [be] uponº Bävel בָּבֶל,º shall the inhabitantºº of Xiyyôn צִיּוֹןº say;ºº and my bloodº uponº the inhabitantsºº of Ca$dîm כַּשׂדִּים,º shall Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº say.ºº

 51:35 The violence done to me and to my flesh [be] upon Bavel, shall the inhabitant of Tziyyon say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Kasdim, shall Yerushalaim say.

 51:36 Thereforeº thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה;º Behold,º I will pleadººº thy cause,º and take vengeanceºº for thee;ººº and I will dry upººº her sea,º and makeº her springsº dry.ºº

 51:36 Therefore thus saith Yahweh; Behold, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry.

 51:37 And Bävel בָּבֶלº shall becomeº heaps,º a dwellingplaceº for dragons,º an astonishment,º and an hissing,º withoutºº an inhabitant.ºº

 51:37 And Bavel shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.

 51:38 They shall roarºº togetherº like lions:º they shall yellºº as lions'º whelps.º

 51:38 They shall roar together like lions: they shall yell as lions' whelps.

 51:39 In their heatº I will makeººº their feasts,º and I will make them drunken,ºº thatº they may rejoice,ºº and sleepºº a perpetualº sleep,º and notº wake,ºº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:39 In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith Yahweh.

 51:40 I will bring them downºº like lambsº to the slaughter,ºº like ramsº withº he goats.º

 51:40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.

 51:41 Howº is Šëša¢ שֵׁשַׁךº taken!ºº and how is the praiseº of the wholeº earthº surprised!ºº howº is Bävel בָּבֶלº becomeº an astonishmentº among the nations!º

 51:41 How is Sheshakh taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Bavel become an astonishment among the nations!

 51:42 The seaº is come upºº uponº Bävel בָּבֶל:º she is coveredºº with the multitudeº of the wavesº thereof.

 51:42 The sea is come up upon Bavel: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.

 51:43 Her citiesº areº a desolation,º a dryº land,º and a wilderness,º a landº whereinº noºº manº dwelleth,ºº neitherº doth [any] sonº of manº passºº thereby.º

 51:43 Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth [any] son of man pass thereby.

 51:44 And I will punishººº Bël בֵּלº in Bävel בָּבֶל,º and I will bring forthºº out of his mouthººº that which he hath swallowed up:º and the nationsº shall notº flow togetherºº any moreº untoº him: yea,º the wallº of Bävel בָּבֶלº shall fall.ºº

 51:44 And I will punish Bel in Bavel, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Bavel shall fall.

 51:45 My people,º goº ye outºº of the midstºº of her, and deliverºº ye every manºº his soulº from the fierceºº angerº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:45 My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of Yahweh.

 51:46 And lestº your heartº faint,ºº and ye fearºº for the rumourº that shall be heardºº in the land;º a rumourº shall both comeºº [one] year,º and afterº that in [another] yearº [shall come] a rumour,º and violenceº in the land,º rulerºº againstº ruler.ºº

 51:46 And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come [one] year, and after that in [another] year [shall come] a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.

 51:47 Therefore,º behold,º the daysº come,ºº that I will do judgmentºº uponº the graven imagesº of Bävel בָּבֶל:º and her wholeº landº shall be confounded,ºº and allº her slainº shall fallºº in the midstº of her.

 51:47 Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Bavel: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

 51:48 Then the heavenº and the earth,º and allº thatº [is] therein, shall singºº forº Bävel בָּבֶל:º forº the spoilersºº shall comeºº unto her from the north,ºº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:48 Then the heaven and the earth, and all that [is] therein, shall sing for Bavel: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith Yahweh.

 51:49 Asº Bävel בָּבֶלº [hath caused] the slainº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº to fall,ºº soº at Bävel בָּבֶלº shall fallºº the slainº of allº the earth.º

 51:49 As Bavel [hath caused] the slain of Yisrael to fall, so at Bavel shall fall the slain of all the earth.

 51:50 Ye that have escapedºº the sword,ºº go away,ºº stand not still:ººº rememberººº Yähwè יָהוֶהº afar off,º and let Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº comeºº intoº your mind.º

 51:50 Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember Yahweh afar off, and let Yerushalaim come into your mind.

 51:51 We are confounded,ºº becauseº we have heardºº reproach:º shameº hath coveredºº our faces:º forº strangersºº are comeºº intoº the sanctuariesº of Yähwè's יָהוֶהº house.º

 51:51 We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh's house.

 51:52 Wherefore,º behold,º the daysº come,ºº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º that I will do judgmentºº uponº her graven images:º and through allº her landº the woundedº shall groan.ºº

 51:52 Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith Yahweh, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.

 51:53 Thoughº Bävel בָּבֶלº should mount upºº to heaven,º and thoughº she should fortifyºº the heightº of her strength,º [yet]º fromºº me shall spoilersºº comeºº unto her, saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 51:53 Though Bavel should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, [yet] from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith Yahweh.

 51:54 A soundº of a cryº [cometh] from Bävel בָּבֶל,ºº and greatº destructionº from the landºº of the Ca$dîm כַּשׂדִּים:º

 51:54 A sound of a cry [cometh] from Bavel, and great destruction from the land of the Kasdim:

 51:55 Becauseº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath spoiledººº Bävel בָּבֶל,º and destroyedºº out ofº her the greatº voice;º when her wavesº do roarºº like greatº waters,º a noiseº of their voiceº is uttered:ºº

 51:55 Because Yahweh hath spoiled Bavel, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:

 51:56 Becauseº the spoilerºº is comeºº uponº her, [even] uponº Bävel בָּבֶל,º and her mighty menº are taken,ºº every one of their bowsº is broken:ºº forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Ël אֵלº of recompencesº shall surelyºº requite.ºº

 51:56 Because the spoiler is come upon her, [even] upon Bavel, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for Yahweh El of recompences shall surely requite.

 51:57 And I will make drunkºº her princes,º and her wiseº [men], her captains,º and her rulers,º and her mighty men:º and they shall sleepºº a perpetualº sleep,º and notº wake,ºº saithºº the King,º whose nameº [is] Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת.º

 51:57 And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise [men], her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name [is] Yahweh Tzevaoth.

 51:58 Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת;º The broadº wallsº of Bävel בָּבֶלº shall be utterlyºº broken,ºº and her highº gatesº shall be burnedºº with fire;º and the peopleº shall labourºº in vain,º and the folkº inº the fire,º and they shall be weary.ºº

 51:58 Thus saith Yahweh Tzevaoth; The broad walls of Bavel shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary.

 51:59 ¶ The wordº whichº Yirmæyà יִרמְיָהº the prophetº commandedººº §æräyà שְׂרָיָהº the sonº of Nëriyyà נֵרִיָּה,º the sonº of Ma`á$ëyà מַעֲשֵׂיָה,º when he wentººº withº Xiðkiyyà צִדקִיָּהº the kingº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº into Bävel בָּבֶלº in the fourthº yearº of his reign.ºº And [this] §æräyà שְׂרָיָהº [was] a quietº prince.º

 51:59 ¶ The word which Yirmeyah the prophet commanded Serayah the son of Neriyyah, the son of Maaseyah, when he went with Tzidqiyyah the king of Yehudah into Bavel in the fourth year of his reign. And [this] Serayah [was] a quiet prince.

 51:60 So Yirmæyà יִרמְיָהº wroteºº inº aº bookºº allº the evilº thatº should comeºº uponº Bävel בָּבֶל,º [even]º allº theseº wordsº that are writtenºº againstº Bävel בָּבֶל.º

 51:60 So Yirmeyah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Bavel, [even] all these words that are written against Bavel.

 51:61 And Yirmæyà יִרמְיָהº saidºº toº §æräyà שְׂרָיָה,º When thou comestºº to Bävel בָּבֶל,º and shalt see,ºº and shalt readººº allº theseº words;º

 51:61 And Yirmeyah said to Serayah, When thou comest to Bavel, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;

 51:62 Then shalt thou say,ºº O Yähwè יָהוֶה,º thouº hast spokenºº againstº thisº place,º to cut it off,ºº that noneº shallº remainºº in it, neither manºº norº beast,º butº that it shall beº desolateº for ever.º

 51:62 Then shalt thou say, O Yahweh, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.

 51:63 And it shall be,º when thou hast made an endºº of readingººº thisº book,º [that] thou shalt bindºº a stoneº toº it, and castºº it intoº the midstº of Pærä± פְּרָת:º

 51:63 And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, [that] thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Perath:

 51:64 And thou shalt say,ºº Thusº shall Bävel בָּבֶלº sink,ºº and shall notº riseºº fromºº the evilº thatº Iº will bringºº uponº her: and they shall be weary.ºº Thusº farº [are] the wordsº of Yirmæyà יִרמְיָה.º

 51:64 And thou shalt say, Thus shall Bavel sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far [are] the words of Yirmeyah.
