 11:1 ¶ Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

 11:1 ¶ Nowº a certainº [man] wasºº sick,ºº [named] Lazarus,º ofº Bethany,ºº theº townº of Maryº andº herº sisterº Martha.º

 11:2 And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

 11:2 º (Itº wasºº [that] Maryº whichº anointedºº theº Lordº with ointment,º andº wipedºº hisº feetº with herºº hair,º whoseº brotherº Lazarusº was sick.)ºº

 11:3 The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

 11:3 Thereforeº his sistersº sentºº untoº him,º saying,ºº Lord,º behold,º he whomº thou lovestºº is sick.ºº

 11:4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.

 11:4 Whenº Jesusº heardºº [that], he said,ºº Thisº sicknessº isºº notº untoº death,º butº forº theº gloryº of God,º thatº theº Sonº of Godº might be glorifiedºº thereby.ºº

 11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

 11:5 Nowº Jesusº lovedºº Martha,º andº herº sister,º andº Lazarus.º

 11:6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

 11:6 Whenº he had heardºº thereforeº thatº he was sick,ºº he abodeººº twoº daysº stillºº inº the sameº placeº whereº he was.ºº

 11:7 Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

 11:7 Thenº afterº thatº saithº heºº to [his] disciples,º Let us goºº intoº Judaeaº again.º

 11:8 The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

 11:8 [His] disciplesº sayºº unto him,º Master,º theº Jewsº of lateº soughtºº to stoneºº thee;º andº goestº thouºº thitherº again?º

 11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

 11:9 Jesusº answered,ºº Areº thereºº notº twelveº hoursº in theº day?º Ifº any manº walkºº inº theº day,º he stumblethºº not,º becauseº he seethºº theº lightº of thisº world.º

 11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

 11:10 Butº ifº a manº walkºº inº theº night,º he stumbleth,ºº becauseº there isºº noº lightº inº him.º

 11:11 These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

 11:11 These thingsº saidºº he:º andº afterº thatº he saithºº unto them,º Ourº friendº Lazarusº sleepeth;ºº butº I go,ºº thatº I may awakeºº himº out of sleep.ººº

 11:12 The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

 11:12 Thenº saidºº hisº disciples,º Lord,º ifº he sleep,ºº he shall do well.ºº

 11:13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.

 11:13 Howbeitº Jesusº spakeºº ofº hisº death:º butº theyº thoughtºº thatº he had spokenºº ofº taking of restº in sleep.º

 11:14 Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

 11:14 Thenºº saidºº Jesusº unto themº plainly,º Lazarusº is dead.ºº

 11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

 11:15 Andº I am gladººº forº your sakesºº thatº I wasºººº notº there,º to the intentº ye may believe;ºº neverthelessº let us goºº untoº him.º

 11:16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

 11:16 Thenº saidºº Thomas,º whichº is calledºº Didymus,º unto his fellowdisciples,º Let usººº alsoº go,ºº thatº weº may dieºº withº him.º

 11:17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

 11:17 Thenº when Jesusº came,ºº he foundºº thatº heº hadºº [lain] inº theº graveº fourº daysº already.º

 11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

 11:18 Nowº Bethanyº wasºº nighº untoº Jerusalem,º aboutº fifteenº furlongsº off:º

 11:19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

 11:19 Andº manyº ofº theº Jewsº cameºº toº Marthaº andº Mary,ºº toº comfortºº themº concerningº theirº brother.º

 11:20 Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary still sat in the house.

 11:20 Thenº Martha,º as soon asº she heardºº thatº Jesusº was coming,ºº went and metºº him:º butº Maryº satºº [still] inº theº house.º

 11:21 Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

 11:21 Thenº saidºº Marthaº untoº Jesus,º Lord,º ifº thou hadst beenºº here,º myº brotherºº hadºº notº died.ººº

 11:22 And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

 11:22 Butº I know,ºº thatº evenº now,º whatsoeverººº thou wilt askººº of God,º Godº will giveºº [it] thee.º

 11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

 11:23 Jesusº saithºº unto her,º Thyº brotherº shall rise again.ºº

 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

 11:24 Marthaº saithºº unto him,º I knowºº thatº he shall rise againºº inº theº resurrectionº atº theº lastº day.º

 11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth on me, though he die, yet shall he live;

 11:25 Jesusº saidºº unto her,º Iº amºº theº resurrection,º andº theº life:º he that believethºº inº me,º thoughº he were dead,ºº yet shall he live:ºº

 11:26 and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

 11:26 Andº whosoeverº livethºº andº believethºº inº meº shallºº neverººº die.ºº Believestº thouºº this?º

 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, [even] he that cometh into the world.

 11:27 She saithºº unto him,º Yea,º Lord:º Iº believeºº thatº thouº artºº theº Christ,º theº Sonº of God,º whichº should comeºº intoº theº world.º

 11:28 And when she had said this, she went away, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Teacher is her, and calleth thee.

 11:28 Andº when she hadºº soº said,ºº she went her way,ºº andº calledºº Maryº herºº sisterº secretly,º saying,ºº Theº Masterº is come,ºº andº callethº forºº thee.º

 11:29 And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

 11:29 As soon asº sheº heardºº [that], she aroseºº quickly,º andº cameºº untoº him.º

 11:30 (Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.)

 11:30 Nowº Jesusº wasºº not yetº comeºº intoº theº town,º butº wasºº inº that placeº whereº Marthaº metºº him.º

 11:31 The Jews then who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, supposing that she was going unto the tomb to weep there.

 11:31 Theº Jewsº thenº whichº wereºº withº herº inº theº house,º andº comfortedºº her,º when they sawºº Mary,º thatº she rose upºº hastilyº andº went out,ºº followedºº her,º saying,ººº She goethºº untoº theº graveº toº weepºº there.º

 11:32 Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

 11:32 Thenº whenº Maryº was comeºº whereº Jesusº was,ºº and sawºº him,º she fell downºº atº hisº feet,º sayingºº unto him,º Lord,º ifº thou hadst beenºº here,º myº brotherº hadº notº died.ººº

 11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews [also] weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

 11:33 Whenº Jesusº thereforeº sawºº herº weeping,ºº andº theº Jewsº also weepingºº which cameºº withº her,º he groanedºº in theº spirit,º andº was troubled,ººº

 11:34 and said, Where have ye laid him? They say unto him, Lord, come and see.

 11:34 Andº said,ºº Whereº have ye laidºº him?º Theyº saidºº unto him,º Lord,º comeºº andº see.ºº

 11:35 Jesus wept.

 11:35 Jesusº wept.ºº

 11:36 The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

 11:36 Thenº saidºº theº Jews,º Beholdº howº he lovedºº him!º

 11:37 But some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of him that was blind, have caused that this man also should not die?

 11:37 Andº someº ofº themº said,ºº Couldºº notº this man,º whichº openedºº theº eyesº of theº blind,º have causedºº thatº evenº this manº shouldºº notº have died?ºº

 11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

 11:38 Jesusº thereforeº againº groaningºº inº himselfº comethºº toº theº grave.ºº Itº wasºº a cave,º andº a stoneº layºº uponº it.º

 11:39 Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been [dead] four days.

 11:39 Jesusº said,ºº Take ye awayºº theº stone.º Martha,ºº theº sisterº of him that was dead,ºº saithºº unto him,º Lord,º by this timeº he stinketh:ºº forº he hath beenºº [dead] four days.º

 11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

 11:40 Jesusº saithºº unto her,º Saidº Iºº notº unto thee,º that,º ifº thou wouldest believe,ºº thou shouldest seeºº theº gloryº of God?º

 11:41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.

 11:41 Thenº they took awayºº theº stoneº [from the place] whereº theº deadºº wasºº laid.ºº Andº Jesusº liftedºº upº [his] eyes,º andº said,ºº Father,º I thankºº theeº thatº thou hast heardºº me.º

 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.

 11:42 Andº Iº knewºº thatº thou hearestºº meº always:º butº becauseº of theº peopleº whichº stand byºº I saidºº [it], thatº they may believeºº thatº thouº hast sentºº me.º

 11:43 And when he had thus spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

 11:43 Andº when he thusº had spoken,ºº he criedºº with a loudº voice,º Lazarus,º comeºº forth.º

 11:44 He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

 11:44 Andº he that was deadºº came forth,ºº boundºº handº andº footº with graveclothes:º andº hisº faceº was bound aboutºº with a napkin.º Jesusº saithºº unto them,º Looseºº him,º andº letº himºº go.ºº

 11:45 Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

 11:45 Thenº manyº ofº theº Jewsº whichº cameºº toº Mary,º andº had seenºº the things whichº Jesusº did,ºº believedºº onº him.º

 11:46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

 11:46 Butº someº ofº themº went their waysºº toº theº Pharisees,º andº toldºº themº what thingsº Jesusº had done.ºº

 11:47 ¶ The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many signs.

 11:47 ¶ Thenº gatheredºº theº chief priestsº andº theº Phariseesº a council,º andº said,ºº Whatº doº we?ºº forº thisº manº doethºº manyº miracles.º

 11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

 11:48 Ifº we letºº himº thusº alone,ºººº allº [men] will believeºº onº him:º andº theº Romansº shall comeºº andº take awayºº bothº ourº placeº andº nation.º

 11:49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

 11:49 Andºº oneºº ofº them,º [named] Caiaphas,º beingºº the high priestº that sameº year,º saidºº unto them,º Yeº knowººº nothing at all,ºº

 11:50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

 11:50 Norº considerºº thatº it is expedientºº for us,º thatº oneº manº should dieºº forº theº people,º andº that theº wholeº nationº perishºº not.º

 11:51 Now this he said not of himself: but, being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

 11:51 Andº thisº spakeº heºº notº ofº himself:º butº beingºº high priestº thatº year,º he prophesiedºº thatº Jesusº shouldºº dieºº forº thatº nation;º

 11:52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God that are scattered abroad.

 11:52 Andº notº forº thatº nationº only,º butº thatº alsoº he should gather togetherºº inº oneº theº childrenº of Godº that were scattered abroad.ºº

 11:53 So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.

 11:53 Thenº fromº thatº dayº forth they took counsel togetherºº for toº putºº himº to death.ººº

 11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.

 11:54 Jesusº thereforeº walkedºº noº moreºº openlyº amongº theº Jews;º butº wentºº thenceº untoº a countryº nearº toº theº wilderness,º intoº a cityº calledºº Ephraim,º and thereº continuedºº withº hisº disciples.º

 11:55 ¶ Now the passover of the Jews was at hand: and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, to purify themselves.

 11:55 ¶ Andº theº Jews'º passoverº wasºº nigh at hand:º andº manyº wentºº out ofº the countryº upººººº toº Jerusalemº beforeº theº passover,º toº purifyºº themselves.º

 11:56 They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?

 11:56 Thenº soughtº they forºº Jesus,º andº spakeºº amongº themselves,º as they stoodºº inº theº temple,º Whatº thinkºº ye,º thatº he willºº notº comeºº toº theº feast?º

 11:57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment, that, if any man knew where he was, he should show it, that they might take him.

 11:57 Nowº bothº theº chief priestsº andº theº Phariseesº had givenºº a commandment,º that,º ifº any manº knewºº whereº he were,ºº he should shewºº [it], thatº they might takeºº him.º
