 18:1 ¶ When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.

 18:1 ¶ When Jesusº had spokenºº these words,º he went forthºº withº hisº disciplesº overº theº brookº Cedron,º whereº wasºº a garden,º intoº the whichº heº entered,ºº andº hisº disciples.º

 18:2 Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.

 18:2 Andº Judasº also,º whichº betrayedºº him,º knewºº theº place:º forº Jesusº ofttimesº resortedºº thitherº withº hisº disciples.º

 18:3 Judas then, having received the band [of soldiers], and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.

 18:3 Judasº then,º having receivedºº a bandº [of men] andº officersº fromº theº chief priestsº andº Pharisees,º comethºº thitherº withº lanternsº andº torchesº andº weapons.º

 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?

 18:4 Jesusº therefore,º knowingºº all thingsº that should comeºº uponº him,ºº went forth,ºº and saidºº unto them,º Whomº seekº ye?ºº

 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

 18:5 They answeredºº him,º Jesusº of Nazareth.º Jesusº saithºº unto them,º Iº amºº [he]. Andº Judasº also,º whichº betrayedºº him,º stoodºº withº them.º

 18:6 When therefore he said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.

 18:6 As soonº thenº asºº he had saidºº unto them,ºº Iº amºº [he], they wentºº backward,ºº andº fellºº to the ground.º

 18:7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

 18:7 Thenº askedº heºº themº again,º Whomº seekº ye?ºº Andº theyº said,ºº Jesusº of Nazareth.º

 18:8 Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:

 18:8 Jesusº answered,ºº I have toldºº youº thatº Iº amºº [he]: ifº thereforeº ye seekºº me,º letºº theseº go their way:ºº

 18:9 that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.

 18:9 Thatº theº sayingº might be fulfilled,ºº whichº he spake,ººº Ofº themº whichº thou gavestºº meº haveº Iº lostºº none.º

 18:10 Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus.

 18:10 Thenº Simonº Peterº havingºº a swordº drewºº it,º andº smoteºº theº high priest'sº servant,º andº cut offºº hisº rightº ear.ºº Theº servant'sº nameº wasºº Malchus.º

 18:11 Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

 18:11 Thenº saidºº Jesusº unto Peter,º Put upºº thyº swordº intoº theº sheath:º theº cupº whichº my Fatherº hath givenºº me,º shall Iºº notºº drinkºº it?º

 18:12 So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,

 18:12 Thenº theº bandº andº theº captainº andº officersº of theº Jewsº tookºº Jesus,º andº boundºº him,º

 18:13 and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

 18:13 Andº ledºº himº awayººº toº Annasº first;º forº he wasºº father in lawº to Caiaphas,º whichº wasºº the high priestº that sameº year.º

 18:14 Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

 18:14 Nowº Caiaphasº wasº he,ººº whichº gave counselºº to theº Jews,º thatº it was expedientºº that oneº manº should dieºº forº theº people.º

 18:15 ¶ And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and [so did] another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;

 18:15 ¶ Andº Simonº Peterº followedºº Jesus,º andº [so did] anotherº disciple:ºº thatº discipleº wasºº knownº unto theº high priest,º andº went in withºº Jesusº intoº theº palaceº of theº high priest.º

 18:16 but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.

 18:16 Butº Peterº stoodºº atº theº doorº without.º Thenº went outºº that otherº disciple,º whichº wasºº knownº unto theº high priest,º andº spakeºº unto her that kept the door,º andº brought inºº Peter.º

 18:17 The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.

 18:17 Thenº saithºº theº damselº that kept the doorº unto Peter,º Artºº notº thouº alsoº [one] ofº thisº man'sº disciples?º Heº saith,ºº I amºº not.º

 18:18 Now the servants and the officers were standing [there], having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.

 18:18 Andº theº servantsº andº officersº stoodº there,ºº who had madeºº a fire of coals;º forº it wasºº cold:º andº they warmedº themselves:ºº andº Peterº stoodºººº withº them,º andº warmedº himself.ºº

 18:19 ¶ The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.

 18:19 ¶ Theº high priestº thenº askedºº Jesusº ofº hisº disciples,º andº ofº hisº doctrine.º

 18:20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.

 18:20 Jesusº answeredºº him,º Iº spakeºº openlyº to theº world;º Iº everº taughtºº inº theº synagogue,º andº inº theº temple,º whitherº theº Jewsº alwaysº resort;ºº andº inº secretº have I saidºº nothing.ºº

 18:21 Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard [me], what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.

 18:21 Whyº askestº thouºº me?ºº askºº them which heardº me,ºº whatº I have saidºº unto them:º behold,º theyº knowºº whatº Iº said.ºº

 18:22 And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?

 18:22 Andº when heº hadºº thusº spoken,ºº oneº of theº officersº which stood byººº struckººº Jesusº with the palm of his hand,ºººº saying,ºº Answerestº thouºº theº high priestº so?º

 18:23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?

 18:23 Jesusº answeredºº him,º Ifº I have spokenºº evil,º bear witnessºº ofº theº evil:º butº ifº well,º whyº smitestºº thou me?º

 18:24 Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.

 18:24 Now Annasº had sentºº himº boundºº untoº Caiaphasº theº high priest.º

 18:25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also [one] of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.

 18:25 Andº Simonº Peterº stoodºººº andº warmedº himself.ºº They saidºº thereforeº unto him,º Artºº notº thouº alsoº [one] ofº hisº disciples?º Heº deniedºº [it], andº said,ºº I amºº not.º

 18:26 One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?

 18:26 Oneº ofº theº servantsº of theº high priest,º beingºº [his] kinsmanº whoseº earº Peterº cut off,ºº saith,ºº Didºº notº Iº seeºº theeº inº theº gardenº withº him?º

 18:27 Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.

 18:27 Peterº thenº deniedºº again:º andº immediatelyº the cockº crew.ºº

 18:28 ¶ They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.

 18:28 ¶ Thenº ledº theyºº Jesusº fromº Caiaphasº untoº theº hall of judgment:º andº it wasºº early;º andº theyº themselvesº wentºº notº intoº theº judgment hall,º lestº they should be defiled;ºº butº thatº they might eatºº theº passover.º

 18:29 Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?

 18:29 Pilateº thenº went outºº untoº them,º andº said,ºº Whatº accusationº bringº yeºº againstº thisº man?º

 18:30 They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.

 18:30 They answeredºº andº saidºº unto him,º Ifººº heº wereºº notºº a malefactor,º we wouldº notº haveº deliveredºº himº upººº unto thee.º

 18:31 Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:

 18:31 Thenº saidºº Pilateº unto them,º Takeºº yeº him,º andº judgeºº himº accordingº to yourº law.º Theº Jewsº thereforeº saidºº unto him,º It isºº notº lawfulººº for usº to putºº any manº to death:ººº

 18:32 that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.

 18:32 Thatº theº sayingº of Jesusº might be fulfilled,ºº whichº he spake,ºº signifyingºº whatº deathº he shouldºº die.ºº

 18:33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?

 18:33 Thenº Pilateº enteredºº intoº theº judgment hallº again,º andº calledºº Jesus,º andº saidºº unto him,º Artºº thouº theº Kingº of theº Jews?º

 18:34 Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?

 18:34 Jesusº answeredºº him,º Sayestºº thouº this thingº ofº thyself,º orº did othersº tellº itºº theeº ofº me?º

 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?

 18:35 Pilateº answered,ººº Amºº Iº a Jew?º Thine ownº nationº andº theº chief priestsº have deliveredºº theeº unto me:º whatº hast thou done?ºº

 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

 18:36 Jesusº answered,ºº Myº kingdomº isºº notº ofº thisº world:º ifº myº kingdomº wereºº ofº thisº world,º then wouldº myº servantsº fight,ººº thatººº I shouldºº notºº be deliveredºº to theº Jews:º butº nowº isºº myº kingdomº notº from hence.º

 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

 18:37 Pilateº thereforeº saidºº unto him,º Artºº thouº a kingº then?º Jesusº answered,ºº Thouº sayestºº thatº Iº amºº a king.º Toº thisº endº wasºº Iº born,ºº andº forº thisº causeº cameº Iºº intoº theº world,º thatº I should bear witnessºº unto theº truth.º Every oneº that isºº ofº theº truthº hearethºº myº voice.º

 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.

 18:38 Pilateº saithºº unto him,º Whatº isºº truth?º Andº when he had saidºº this,º he went outºº againº untoº theº Jews,º andº saithºº unto them,º Iº findºº inº himº noº faultº [at all].

 18:39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?

 18:39 Butº yeº haveºº a custom,º thatº I should releaseºº unto youº oneº atº theº passover:º willº yeºº thereforeº that I releaseºº unto youº theº Kingº of theº Jews?º

 18:40 They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)

 18:40 Thenº criedº theyºº allº again,º saying,ºº Notº this man,º butº Barabbas.º Nowº Barabbasº wasºº a robber.º
