 5:1 ¶ After these things there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

 5:1 ¶ Afterº thisº there wasºº a feastº of theº Jews;º andº Jesusº went upºº toº Jerusalem.º

 5:2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the sheep [gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five porches.

 5:2 Nowº there isºº atº Jerusalemº byº theº sheepº [market] a pool,º whichº is calledºº in the Hebrew tongueº Bethesda,º havingºº fiveº porches.º

 5:3 In these lay a multitude of them that were sick, blind, halt, withered, [waiting for the moving of the water.]

 5:3 Inº theseº layºº a greatº multitudeº of impotent folk,ºº of blind,º halt,º withered,º waiting forºº theº movingº of theº water.º

 5:4 [for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.]

 5:4 Forº an angelº went downºº atº a certain seasonºº intoº theº pool,º andº troubledºº theº water:º whosoever thenº firstº afterº theº troublingº of theº waterº stepped inºº was madeºº wholeº ofº whatsoeverºº diseaseº he had.ºº

 5:5 And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.

 5:5 Andº a certainº manº wasºº there,º which hadºº anº infirmityºº thirtyº and eightºº years.º

 5:6 When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time [in that case], he saith unto him, Wouldest thou be made whole?

 5:6 When Jesusº sawºº himº lie,ºº andº knewºº thatº he had beenºº nowº a longº timeº [in that case], he saithºº unto him,º Wiltº thouºº be madeºº whole?º

 5:7 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

 5:7 Theº impotent manºº answeredºº him,º Sir,º I haveºº noº man,ºº whenº theº waterº is troubled,ºº toº putºº meº intoº theº pool:º butº whileºº Iº am coming,ºº anotherº steppeth downºº beforeº me.º

 5:8 Jesus saith unto him, Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.

 5:8 Jesusº saithºº unto him,º Rise,ºº take upºº thyº bed,º andº walk.ºº

 5:9 And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day.

 5:9 Andº immediatelyº theº manº was madeºº whole,º andº took upºº hisº bed,º andº walked:ºº andº onº theº sameº dayº wasºº the sabbath.º

 5:10 ¶ So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.

 5:10 ¶ Theº Jewsº thereforeº saidºº unto him that was cured,ºº It isºº the sabbath day:º it isºº notº lawfulººº for theeº to carryºº [thy] bed.º

 5:11 But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

 5:11 He answeredºº them,º He that madeºº meº whole,º the sameº saidºº unto me,º Take upºº thyº bed,º andº walk.ºº

 5:12 They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk?

 5:12 Thenº askedº theyºº him,º Whatº manº isºº that whichº saidºº unto thee,º Take upºº thyº bed,º andº walk?ºº

 5:13 But he that was healed knew not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in the place.

 5:13 Andº he that was healedºº wistºº notº whoº it was:ºº forº Jesusº had conveyed himself away,ºº a multitudeº beingºº inº [that] place.º

 5:14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.

 5:14 Afterwardºº Jesusº findethºº himº inº theº temple,º andº saidºº unto him,º Behold,º thou art madeºº whole:º sinºº no more,º lestº a worseº thingºº comeºº unto thee.º

 5:15 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him whole.

 5:15 Theº manº departed,ºº andº toldºº theº Jewsº thatº it wasºº Jesus,º whichº had madeººº himº whole.º

 5:16 And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.

 5:16 Andº thereforeºº didºº theº Jewsº persecuteºº Jesus,º andº soughtºº to slayºº him,º becauseº he had doneºº these thingsº onº the sabbath day.º

 5:17 ¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh even until now, and I work.

 5:17 ¶ Butº Jesusº answeredºº them,º Myº Fatherº workethºº hitherto,ºº and Iº work.ºº

 5:18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

 5:18 Thereforeººº theº Jewsº soughtºº the moreº to killºº him,º becauseº heºº notº onlyº had brokenºº theº sabbath,º butº saidºº alsoº that Godº was hisº Father,º makingºº himselfº equalº with God.º

 5:19 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doeth, these the Son also doeth in like manner.

 5:19 Thenº answeredºº Jesusº andº saidºº unto them,º Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto you,º Theº Sonº canººº doºº nothingº ofº himself,º butº whatº he seethºº theº Fatherº do:ºº forº what things soeverºº heº doeth,ºº theseº alsoº doethºº theº Sonº likewise.º

 5:20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and greater works than these will he show him, that ye may marvel.

 5:20 Forº theº Fatherº lovethºº theº Son,º andº shewethºº himº all thingsº thatº himselfº doeth:ºº andº he will shewºº himº greaterºº worksº thanº these,º thatº yeº may marvel.ºº

 5:21 For as the Father raiseth the dead and giveth them life, even so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.

 5:21 Forº asº theº Fatherº raiseth upºº theº dead,º andº quickenethºº [them]; evenº soº theº Sonºº quickenethºº whomº he will.ºº

 5:22 For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son;

 5:22 Forºº theº Fatherº judgethºº no man,º butº hath committedºº allº judgmentº unto theº Son:º

 5:23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him.

 5:23 Thatº allº [men] should honourºº theº Son,º even asº they honourºº theº Father.º He that honourethºº notº theº Sonº honourethºº notº theº Fatherº whichº hath sentºº him.º

 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life.

 5:24 Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto you,ºº He that hearethºº myº word,º andº believethºº on him that sentºº me,º hathºº everlastingº life,º andº shallºº notº comeºº intoº condemnation;º butº is passedºº fromº deathº untoº life.º

 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live.

 5:25 Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto you,ºº Theº hourº is coming,ºº andº nowº is,ºº whenº theº deadº shall hearºº theº voiceº of theº Sonº of God:º andº they that hearºº shall live.ºº

 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself, even so gave he to the Son also to have life in himself:

 5:26 Forº asº theº Fatherº hathºº lifeº inº himself;º soºº hath he givenºº toº theº Sonº to haveºº lifeº inº himself;º

 5:27 and he gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

 5:27 Andº hath givenºº himº authorityº to executeºº judgmentº also,º becauseº he isºº the Sonº of man.º

 5:28 Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

 5:28 Marvelºº notº at this:º forº the hourº is coming,ºº inº the whichº allº thatº are inº theº gravesº shall hearºº hisº voice,º

 5:29 and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

 5:29 Andº shall come forth;ºº they that have doneºº good,º untoº the resurrectionº of life;º andº they that have doneºº evil,º untoº the resurrectionº of damnation.º

 5:30 I can of myself do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is righteous; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

 5:30 Iº canººº ofº mine own selfº doºº nothing:ºº asº I hear,ºº I judge:ºº andº myº judgmentº isºº just;º becauseº I seekºº notº mine ownº will,º butº theº willº of theº Fatherº which hath sentºº me.º

 5:31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

 5:31 Ifº Iº bear witnessºº ofº myself,º myº witnessº isºº notº true.º

 5:32 ¶ It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

 5:32 ¶ There isºº anotherº that beareth witnessºº ofº me;º andº I knowºº thatº theº witnessº whichº he witnessethºº ofº meº isºº true.º

 5:33 Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth.

 5:33 Yeº sentºº untoº John,º andº he bare witnessºº unto theº truth.º

 5:34 But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved.

 5:34 Butº Iº receiveºº notº testimonyº fromº man:º butº these thingsº I say,ºº thatº yeº might be saved.ºº

 5:35 He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

 5:35 Heº wasºº a burningºº andº a shiningºº light:º andº yeº were willingºº forº a seasonº to rejoiceºº inº hisº light.º

 5:36 ¶ But the witness which I have is greater than [that of] John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

 5:36 ¶ Butº Iº haveºº greaterº witnessº than [that] of John:º forº theº worksº whichº theº Fatherº hath givenºº meº toº finish,ººº theº sameº worksº thatº Iº do,ºº bear witnessºº ofº me,º thatº theº Fatherº hath sentºº me.º

 5:37 And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.

 5:37 Andº theº Fatherº himself,º which hath sentºº me,º hath borne witnessºº ofº me.º Ye haveºº neitherº heardºº hisº voiceº at any time,º norº seenºº hisº shape.º

 5:38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.

 5:38 Andº ye haveºº notº hisº wordº abidingºº inº you:º forº whomºº heº hath sent,ºº himº yeº believeºº not.º

 5:39 ¶ Ye search the scriptures, because ye think that in them ye have eternal life; and these are they which bear witness of me;

 5:39 ¶ Searchººº theº scriptures;º forº inº themº yeº thinkºº ye haveºº eternalº life:º andº theyº areº theyºº which testifyºº ofº me.º

 5:40 and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.

 5:40 Andº ye willºº notº comeºº toº me,º thatº ye might haveºº life.º

 5:41 I receive not glory from men.

 5:41 I receiveºº notº honourº fromº men.º

 5:42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in yourselves.

 5:42 Butº I knowºº you,º thatº ye haveºº notº theº loveº of Godº inº you.º

 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

 5:43 Iº amº comeºº inº myº Father'sº name,º andº ye receiveºº meº not:º ifº anotherº shall comeºº inº his ownº name,º himº ye will receive.ºº

 5:44 How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not?

 5:44 Howº canºº yeº believe,ºº which receiveºº honourº one of another,ºº andº seekºº notº theº honourº thatº [cometh] fromº Godº only?º

 5:45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, [even] Moses, on whom ye have set your hope.

 5:45 Doºº notº thinkºº thatº Iº will accuseºº youº toº theº Father:º there isºº [one] that accusethºº you,º [even] Moses,º inº whomº yeº trust.ºº

 5:46 For if ye believed Moses, ye would believe me; for he wrote of me.

 5:46 Forºº had yeº believedºº Moses,º ye would have believedººº me:º forº heº wroteºº ofº me.º

 5:47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?

 5:47 Butº ifº ye believeºº notº hisº writings,º howº shall ye believeºº myº words?º
