 3:1 ¶ Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

 3:1 ¶ º Thereº wasºº a manº ofº theº Pharisees,º namedºº Nicodemus,º a rulerº of theº Jews:º

 3:2 the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him.

 3:2 The sameº cameºº toº Jesusº by night,º andº saidºº unto him,º Rabbi,º we knowºº thatº thou artºº a teacherº comeºº fromº God:º forº no manº canºº doºº theseº miraclesº thatº thouº doest,ºº exceptº Godº beºº withº him.º

 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

 3:3 Jesusº answeredºº andº saidºº unto him,º Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto thee,º Exceptº a manº be bornºº again,º he cannotººº seeºº theº kingdomº of God.º

 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

 3:4 Nicodemusº saithºº untoº him,º Howº canºº a manº be bornºº when he isºº old?º canººº heº enterºº the second timeº intoº hisºº mother'sº womb,º andº be born?ºº

 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God!

 3:5 Jesusº answered,ºº Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto thee,º Exceptº a manº be bornºº ofº waterº andº [of] the Spirit,º he cannotººº enterºº intoº theº kingdomº of God.º

 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

 3:6 That which is bornºº ofº theº fleshº isºº flesh;º andº that which is bornºº ofº theº Spiritº isºº spirit.º

 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.

 3:7 Marvelºº notº thatº I saidºº unto thee,º Yeº mustºº be bornºº again.º

 3:8 The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

 3:8 Theº windº blowethºº whereº it listeth,ºº andº thou hearestºº theº soundº thereof,º butº canstºº notº tellººº whenceº it cometh,ºº andº whitherº it goeth:ºº soº isºº every oneº that is bornºº ofº theº Spirit.º

 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

 3:9 Nicodemusº answeredºº andº saidºº unto him,º Howº canºº these thingsº be?ºº

 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things?

 3:10 Jesusº answeredºº andº saidºº unto him,º Artºº thouº a masterº of Israel,º andº knowestºº notº these things?º

 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

 3:11 Verily,º verily,º I sayºº unto thee,º Weº speakºº thatºº we do know,ºº andº testifyºº thatº we have seen;ºº andº ye receiveºº notº ourº witness.º

 3:12 If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things?

 3:12 Ifº I have toldºº youº earthly things,º andº ye believeºº not,º howº shall ye believe,ºº ifº I tellºº youº [of] heavenly things?º

 3:13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, who is in heaven.

 3:13 Andº no manº hath ascended upºº toº heaven,º butº he that came downºº fromº heaven,º [even] theº Sonº of manº whichº isºº inº heaven.º

 3:14 ¶ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;

 3:14 ¶ Andº asº Mosesº lifted upºº theº serpentº inº theº wilderness,º even soº mustºº theº Sonº of manº be lifted up:ºº

 3:15 that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

 3:15 Thatººº whosoeverº believethºº inº himº shouldºº notºº perish,ºº butº haveºº eternalº life.º

 3:16 ¶ For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.

 3:16 ¶ Forº Godº soº lovedºº theº world,º thatº he gaveºº hisºº only begottenº Son,º thatº whosoeverº believethºº inº himº shouldºº notº perish,ºº butº haveºº everlastingº life.º

 3:17 For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.

 3:17 Forº Godº sentºº notº hisºº Sonº intoº theº worldº toºº condemnºº theº world;º butº thatº theº worldº throughº himº might be saved.ºº

 3:18 ¶ He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.

 3:18 ¶ He that believethºº onº himº isºº notº condemned:ºº butº he that believethºº notº is condemnedºº already,º becauseº he hathºº notº believedºº inº theº nameº of theº only begottenº Sonº of God.º

 3:19 And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil.

 3:19 Andº thisº isºº theº condemnation,º thatº lightº is comeºº intoº theº world,º andº menº lovedºº darknessº ratherº thanº light,º becauseº theirº deedsº wereºº evil.º

 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved.

 3:20 Forº every oneº that doethºº evilº hatethºº theº light,º neitherºº comethºº toº theº light,º lestº hisº deedsº should be reproved.ºº

 3:21 But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.

 3:21 Butº he that doethºº truthº comethºº toº theº light,º thatº hisº deedsº may be made manifest,ºº thatº they areºº wroughtºº inº God.º

 3:22 ¶ After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

 3:22 ¶ Afterº these thingsº cameºº Jesusº andº hisº disciplesº intoº theº landº of Judaea;º andº thereº he tarriedºº withº them,º andº baptized.ºº

 3:23 ¶ And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

 3:23 ¶ Andº Johnº alsoº wasºº baptizingºº inº Aenonº nearº toº Salim,º becauseº there wasºº muchº waterº there:º andº they came,ºº andº were baptized.ºº

 3:24 For John was not yet cast into prison.

 3:24 Forº Johnº wasºº not yetº castºº intoº prison.º

 3:25 ¶ There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John's disciples with a Jew about purifying.

 3:25 ¶ Thenº there aroseºº a questionº betweenº [some] ofº John'sº disciplesº andº the Jewsº aboutº purifying.º

 3:26 And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

 3:26 Andº they cameºº untoº John,º andº saidºº unto him,º Rabbi,º heº thatº wasºº withº theeº beyondº Jordan,º to whomº thouº barest witness,ºº behold,º the sameº baptizeth,ºº andº allº [men] comeºº toº him.º

 3:27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven.

 3:27 Johnº answeredºº andº said,ºº A manº canººº receiveºº nothing,º exceptº it beºº givenºº himº fromº heaven.º

 3:28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him.

 3:28 Yeº yourselvesº bearºº meº witness,ººº thatº I said,ºº Iº amºº notº theº Christ,º butº thatº I amºº sentºº beforeº him.º

 3:29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is made full.

 3:29 He that hathºº theº brideº isºº the bridegroom:º butº theº friendº of theº bridegroom,º whichº standethºº andº hearethºº him,º rejoicethºº greatlyº becauseº of theº bridegroom'sº voice:º thisº myº joyº thereforeº is fulfilled.ºº

 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

 3:30 Heº mustºº increase,ºº butº Iº [must] decrease.ºº

 3:31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

 3:31 He that comethºº from aboveº isºº aboveº all:º he that isºº ofº theº earthº isºº earthly,ºº andº speakethºº ofº theº earth:º he that comethºº fromº heavenº isºº aboveº all.º

 3:32 What he hath seen and heard, of that he beareth witness; and no man receiveth his witness.

 3:32 Andº whatº he hath seenºº andº heard,ºº thatº he testifieth;ºº andº no manº receivethºº hisº testimony.º

 3:33 He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to [this], that God is true.

 3:33 He that hath receivedºº hisº testimonyº hath set to his sealºº thatº Godº isºº true.º

 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure.

 3:34 Forº he whomº Godº hath sentºº speakethºº theº wordsº of God:º forº Godº givethºº notº theº Spiritº byº measureº [unto him].

 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

 3:35 Theº Fatherº lovethºº theº Son,º andº hath givenºº all thingsº intoº hisº hand.º

 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

 3:36 He that believethºº onº theº Sonº hathºº everlastingº life:º andº he that believethº notºº theº Sonº shallºº notº seeºº life;º butº theº wrathº of Godº abidethºº onº him.º
