 11:1 ¶ And it came to pass,º after the yearº was expired,º at the timeº when kingsººº go forthºº [to battle], that Däwið דָּוִדº sentººº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and his servantsº withº him, and allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º and they destroyedººº the childrenº of `Ammôn עַמּוֹן,º and besiegedººº Rabbà רַבָּה.º But Däwið דָּוִדº tarriedº stillºº at Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַם.º

 11:1 ¶ And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth [to battle], that Dawid sent Yoav, and his servants with him, and all Yisrael; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But Dawid tarried still at Yerushalaim.

 11:2 ¶ And it came to passº in an eveningtide,ºº that Däwið דָּוִדº aroseºº from offºº his bed,º and walkedºº uponº the roofº of the king'sº house:º and fromºº the roofº he sawºº a womanº washingºº herself; and the womanº [was] veryº beautifulº to lookº upon.º

 11:2 ¶ And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that Dawid arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman [was] very beautiful to look upon.

 11:3 And Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº and enquiredºº after the woman.º And [one] said,ºº [Is] notº thisº Ba± Ševa` בַּת־שֶׁבַע,º the daughterº of ´Élî`äm אֱלִיעָם,º the wifeº of ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº the Çittî חִתִּי?º

 11:3 And Dawid sent and enquired after the woman. And [one] said, [Is] not this Bath-Sheva, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriyyah the Chitti?

 11:4 And Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº messengers,º and tookºº her; and she cameº inºº untoº him, and he layºº with her;º for sheº was purifiedºº from her uncleanness:ºº and she returnedºº untoº her house.º

 11:4 And Dawid sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

 11:5 And the womanº conceived,ºº and sentºº and toldºº Däwið דָּוִד,º and said,ºº Iº [am] with child.º

 11:5 And the woman conceived, and sent and told Dawid, and said, I [am] with child.

 11:6 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º [saying], Sendººº meº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº the Çittî חִתִּי.º And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº sentººº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº toº Däwið דָּוִד.º

 11:6 ¶ And Dawid sent to Yoav, [saying], Send me Uriyyah the Chitti. And Yoav sent Uriyyah to Dawid.

 11:7 And when ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº was comeºº untoº him, Däwið דָּוִדº demandedºº [of him] how Yô´äv יוֹאָבº did,º and how the peopleº did,º and how the warº prospered.º

 11:7 And when Uriyyah was come unto him, Dawid demanded [of him] how Yoav did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.

 11:8 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº to ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּה,º Go downºº to thy house,º and washºº thy feet.º And ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº departedº outºº of the king'sº house,ººº and there followedºº him a messº [of meat] from the king.º

 11:8 And Dawid said to Uriyyah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriyyah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess [of meat] from the king.

 11:9 But ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº sleptºº at the doorº of the king'sº houseº withº allº the servantsº of his ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º and wentº notº downºº toº his house.º

 11:9 But Uriyyah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his adon, and went not down to his house.

 11:10 And when they had toldºº Däwið דָּוִד,º saying,ºº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº went not downººº untoº his house,º Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּה,º Camestºº thouº notº from [thy] journey?ºº whyº [then] didst thou notº go downºº untoº thine house?º

 11:10 And when they had told Dawid, saying, Uriyyah went not down unto his house, Dawid said unto Uriyyah, Camest thou not from [thy] journey? why [then] didst thou not go down unto thine house?

 11:11 And ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º The ark,º and Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה,º abideºº in tents;º and my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and the servantsº of my ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º are encampedºº inº the openº fields;º shall Iº then goºº intoº mine house,º to eatºº and to drink,ºº and to lieºº withº my wife?º [as] thou livest,º and [as] thy soulº liveth,º I will not doººº thisº thing.º

 11:11 And Uriyyah said unto Dawid, The ark, and Yisrael, and Yehudah, abide in tents; and my adon Yoav, and the servants of my adon, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? [as] thou livest, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.

 11:12 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº toº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּה,º Tarryºº hereº to dayº also,º and to morrowº I will let thee depart.ºº So ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº abodeºº in Yærûšälaim יְרוּשָׁלִַםº thatº day,º and the morrow.ºº

 11:12 And Dawid said to Uriyyah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriyyah abode in Yerushalaim that day, and the morrow.

 11:13 And when Däwið דָּוִדº had calledºº him, he did eatºº and drinkºº beforeº him; and he made him drunk:ºº and at evenº he went outºº to lieºº on his bedº withº the servantsº of his ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º but wentº notº downºº toº his house.º

 11:13 And when Dawid had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his adon, but went not down to his house.

 11:14 ¶ And it came to passº in the morning,º that Däwið דָּוִדº wroteºº a letterº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and sentºº [it] by the handº of ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּה.º

 11:14 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that Dawid wrote a letter to Yoav, and sent [it] by the hand of Uriyyah.

 11:15 And he wroteºº in the letter,º saying,ºº Setºº yeº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº inº the forefrontºº of the hottestº battle,º and retireºº ye fromºº him,º that he may be smitten,ºº and die.ºº

 11:15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriyyah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

 11:16 And it came to pass,º when Yô´äv יוֹאָבº observedººº the city,º that he assignedººº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº untoº a placeº whereºº he knewºº thatº valiantº menºº [were].

 11:16 And it came to pass, when Yoav observed the city, that he assigned Uriyyah unto a place where he knew that valiant men [were].

 11:17 And the menºº of the cityº went out,ºº and foughtºº withº Yô´äv יוֹאָב:º and there fellºº [some] ofº the peopleº of the servantsºº of Däwið דָּוִד;º and ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº the Çittî חִתִּיº diedºº also.º

 11:17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Yoav: and there fell [some] of the people of the servants of Dawid; and Uriyyah the Chitti died also.

 11:18 ¶ Then Yô´äv יוֹאָבº sentºº and toldºº Däwið דָּוִדºº allº the thingsº concerning the war;º

 11:18 ¶ Then Yoav sent and told Dawid all the things concerning the war;

 11:19 And chargedººº the messenger,º saying,ºº When thou hast made an endºº of tellingºº the mattersº of the warº untoº the king,º

 11:19 And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,

 11:20 And ifº so beº that the king'sº wrathº arise,ºº and he sayºº unto thee, Whereforeº approachedº ye so nighºº untoº the cityº when ye did fight?ºº knewºº ye notº thatº they would shootºº fromºº the wall?º

 11:20 And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

 11:21 Whoº smoteººº ´Ávîmele¢ אֲבִימֶלֶךº the sonº of Yærubbeše± יְרֻבֶּשֶׁת?º did notº a womanº castºº a pieceº of a millstoneº uponº him fromºº the wall,º that he diedºº in Tëvëx תֵּבֵץ?º whyº went ye nighººº the wall?º then sayºº thou, Thy servantº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº the Çittî חִתִּיº is deadºº also.º

 11:21 Who smote Avimelekh the son of Yerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Tevetz? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriyyah the Chitti is dead also.

 11:22 ¶ So the messengerº went,ººº and cameºº and shewedºº Däwið דָּוִדºº allº thatº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº had sentºº him for.

 11:22 ¶ So the messenger went, and came and shewed Dawid all that Yoav had sent him for.

 11:23 And the messengerº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Surelyº the menºº prevailedºº againstº us, and came outºº untoº us into the field,º and we wereº uponº them even untoº the enteringº of the gate.º

 11:23 And the messenger said unto Dawid, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.

 11:24 And the shootersºº shotºº from offºº the wallº uponº thy servants;º and [some] of the king'sº servantsººº be dead,ºº and thy servantº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº the Çittî חִתִּיº is deadºº also.º

 11:24 And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and [some] of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriyyah the Chitti is dead also.

 11:25 Then Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº the messenger,º Thusº shalt thou sayºº untoº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º Let notºº thisº thingº displeaseººº thee, forº the swordº devourethºº oneº as well as another:º make thy battleº more strongºº againstº the city,º and overthrowºº it: and encourageºº thou him.

 11:25 Then Dawid said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Yoav, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

 11:26 ¶ And when the wifeº of ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº heardºº thatº ´Ûriyyà אוּרִיָּהº her husbandº was dead,ºº she mournedºº forº her husband.º

 11:26 ¶ And when the wife of Uriyyah heard that Uriyyah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

 11:27 And when the mourningº was past,ºº Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº and fetchedºº her toº his house,º and she becameº his wife,º and bareºº him a son.º But the thingº thatº Däwið דָּוִדº had doneºº displeasedººº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 11:27 And when the mourning was past, Dawid sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that Dawid had done displeased Yahweh.
