 2:1 ¶ And it came to passº afterº this,ºº that Däwið דָּוִדº enquiredºº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º saying,ºº Shall I go upºº into anyº of the citiesº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה?º And Yähwè יָהוֶהº saidºº untoº him, Go up.ºº And Däwið דָּוִדº said,ºº Whitherº shall I go up?ºº And he said,ºº Unto Çevrôn חֶברוֹן.º

 2:1 ¶ And it came to pass after this, that Dawid enquired of Yahweh, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Yehudah? And Yahweh said unto him, Go up. And Dawid said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Chevron.

 2:2 So Däwið דָּוִדº went upºº thither,º and his twoº wivesº also,º ´Áçînö`am אֲחִינֹעַםº the Yizræ`ë´lî± יִזרְעֵאלִית,º and ´Áviqäyil אֲבִגָיִלº Näväl's נָבָלº wifeº the Carmælî כַּרמְלִי.º

 2:2 So Dawid went up thither, and his two wives also, Achinoam the Yizreelith, and Avigayil Naval's wife the Karmeli.

 2:3 And his menºº thatº [were] withº him did Däwið דָּוִדº bring up,ºº every manº with his household:º and they dweltºº in the citiesº of Çevrôn חֶברוֹן.º

 2:3 And his men that [were] with him did Dawid bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Chevron.

 2:4 And the menºº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº came,ºº and thereº they anointedººº Däwið דָּוִדº kingº overº the houseº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה.º And they toldºº Däwið דָּוִד,º saying,ºº [That] the menºº of Yävêš Gil`äð יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָדºº [were they] thatº buriedººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל.º

 2:4 And the men of Yehudah came, and there they anointed Dawid king over the house of Yehudah. And they told Dawid, saying, [That] the men of Yavesh-Gilad [were they] that buried Shaul.

 2:5 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº messengersº untoº the menºº of Yävêš Gil`äð יָבֵישׁ־גִּלעָד,ºº and saidºº untoº them, Blessedºº [be] yeº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º thatº ye have shewedºº thisº kindnessº untoº your ´áðôn אֲדוֹן,º [even] untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and have buriedºº him.

 2:5 ¶ And Dawid sent messengers unto the men of Yavesh-Gilad, and said unto them, Blessed [be] ye of Yahweh, that ye have shewed this kindness unto your adon, [even] unto Shaul, and have buried him.

 2:6 And nowº Yähwè יָהוֶהº shewºº kindnessº and truthº untoº you: and Iº alsoº will requiteºº you thisº kindness,º becauseº ye have doneºº thisº thing.º

 2:6 And now Yahweh shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing.

 2:7 Therefore nowº let your handsº be strengthened,ºº and beº ye valiant:ºº forº your ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº is dead,ºº and alsoº the houseº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº have anointedºº me kingº overº them.

 2:7 Therefore now let your hands be strengthened, and be ye valiant: for your adon Shaul is dead, and also the house of Yehudah have anointed me king over them.

 2:8 ¶ But ´Avnër אַבנֵרº the sonº of Nër נֵר,º captainº of Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּלº host,º tookººº ´Îš Böše± אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתº the sonº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and brought him overºº to Maçánayim מַחֲנַיִם;º

 2:8 ¶ But Avner the son of Ner, captain of Shaul's host, took Ish-Bosheth the son of Shaul, and brought him over to Machanayim;

 2:9 And made him kingºº overº Gil`äð גִּלעָד,º and overº the ´Ášûrîm אֲשׁוּרִים,ºº and overº Yizræ`e´l יִזרְעֶאל,º and overº ´Efrayim אֶפרַיִם,º and overº Binyämîn בִּניָמִין,º and overº allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 2:9 And made him king over Gilad, and over the Ashurim, and over Yizreel, and over Efrayim, and over Binyamin, and over all Yisrael.

 2:10 ´Îš Böše± אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתº Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּלº sonº [was] fortyº yearsº oldº when he began to reignºº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and reignedºº twoº years.º Butº the houseº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº followedºº Däwið דָּוִד.º

 2:10 Ish-Bosheth Shaul's son [was] forty years old when he began to reign over Yisrael, and reigned two years. But the house of Yehudah followed Dawid.

 2:11 And the timeºº thatº Däwið דָּוִדº wasº kingº in Çevrôn חֶברוֹןº overº the houseº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº wasº sevenº yearsº and sixº months.º

 2:11 And the time that Dawid was king in Chevron over the house of Yehudah was seven years and six months.

 2:12 ¶ And ´Avnër אַבנֵרº the sonº of Nër נֵר,º and the servantsº of ´Îš Böše± אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתº the sonº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º went outºº from Maçánayim מַחֲנַיִםºº to Giv`ôn גִּבעוֹן.º

 2:12 ¶ And Avner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-Bosheth the son of Shaul, went out from Machanayim to Givon.

 2:13 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº the sonº of Xærûyà צְרוּיָה,º and the servantsº of Däwið דָּוִד,º went out,ºº and metºº togetherº byº the poolº of Giv`ôn גִּבעוֹן:º and they sat down,ºº the oneº on the one sideºº ofº the pool,º and the otherº on the other sideºº ofº the pool.º

 2:13 And Yoav the son of Tzeruyah, and the servants of Dawid, went out, and met together by the pool of Givon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

 2:14 And ´Avnër אַבנֵרº saidºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º Let the young menº nowº arise,ºº and playºº beforeº us. And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº said,ºº Let them arise.ºº

 2:14 And Avner said to Yoav, Let the young men now arise, and play before us. And Yoav said, Let them arise.

 2:15 Then there aroseºº and went overºº by numberº twelveºº of Binyämîn בִּניָמִין,º which [pertained] to ´Îš Böše± אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁתº the sonº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and twelveºº of the servantsºº of Däwið דָּוִד.º

 2:15 Then there arose and went over by number twelve of Binyamin, which [pertained] to Ish-Bosheth the son of Shaul, and twelve of the servants of Dawid.

 2:16 And they caughtºº every oneº his fellowº by the head,º and [thrust] his swordº in his fellow'sº side;º so they fell downºº together:º wherefore thatº placeº was calledºº Çelka± Haxxurîm חֶלקַת־הַצֻּרִים,º whichº [is] in Giv`ôn גִּבעוֹן.º

 2:16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Chelqath-Hatztzurim, which [is] in Givon.

 2:17 And there wasº a veryºº soreº battleº thatº day;º and ´Avnër אַבנֵרº was beaten,ºº and the menºº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º beforeº the servantsº of Däwið דָּוִד.º

 2:17 And there was a very sore battle that day; and Avner was beaten, and the men of Yisrael, before the servants of Dawid.

 2:18 ¶ And thereº wereº threeº sonsº of Xærûyà צְרוּיָהº there, Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁי,º and `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵל:º and `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵלº [was as] lightº of footº as aº wildºº roe.º

 2:18 ¶ And there were three sons of Tzeruyah there, Yoav, and Avishay, and Asah-El: and Asah-El [was as] light of foot as a wild roe.

 2:19 And `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵלº pursuedºº afterº ´Avnër אַבנֵר;º and in goingººº he turnedºº notº toº the rightº handº nor toº the leftº from followingºº ´Avnër אַבנֵר.º

 2:19 And Asah-El pursued after Avner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Avner.

 2:20 Then ´Avnër אַבנֵרº lookedºº behindº him, and said,ºº [Art] thouº `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵל?º And he answered,ºº Iº [am].

 2:20 Then Avner looked behind him, and said, [Art] thou Asah-El? And he answered, I [am].

 2:21 And ´Avnër אַבנֵרº saidºº to him, Turn thee asideºº toº thy rightº handº orº toº thy left,º and lay thee holdºº on oneº of the young men,ºº and takeºº theeº his armour.º But `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵלº wouldºº notº turn asideºº from followingºº of him.

 2:21 And Avner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asah-El would not turn aside from following of him.

 2:22 And ´Avnër אַבנֵרº saidºº againºº toº `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵל,º Turn thee asideºº from followingºº me: whereforeº should I smiteºº thee to the ground?º howº then should I hold upºº my faceº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº thy brother?º

 2:22 And Avner said again to Asah-El, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Yoav thy brother?

 2:23 Howbeit he refusedºº to turn aside:ºº wherefore ´Avnër אַבנֵרº with the hinder endº ofº the spearº smoteºº him underº the fifthº [rib], that the spearº came outºº behindºº him; and he fell downºº there,º and diedºº in the same place:º and it came to pass,º [that] as manyº as cameºº toº the placeº whereº `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵלº fell downºº and diedºº stood still.ºº

 2:23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Avner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth [rib], that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, [that] as many as came to the place where Asah-El fell down and died stood still.

 2:24 Yô´äv יוֹאָבº also and ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº pursuedºº afterº ´Avnër אַבנֵר:º and the sunº went downºº when theyº were comeºº toº the hillº of ´Ammà אַמָּה,º thatº [lieth] beforeºº Gîåç גִּיחַº by the wayº of the wildernessº of Giv`ôn גִּבעוֹן.º

 2:24 Yoav also and Avishay pursued after Avner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that [lieth] before Giach by the way of the wilderness of Givon.

 2:25 ¶ And the childrenº of Binyämîn בִּניָמִיןº gathered themselves togetherºº afterº ´Avnër אַבנֵר,º and becameº oneº troop,º and stoodºº onº the topº of anº hill.º

 2:25 ¶ And the children of Binyamin gathered themselves together after Avner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.

 2:26 Then ´Avnër אַבנֵרº calledºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and said,ºº Shall the swordº devourºº for ever?º knowestºº thou notº thatº it will beº bitternessº in the latter end?º how longº shall it be then, ereº thou bidºº the peopleº returnºº from followingºº their brethren?º

 2:26 Then Avner called to Yoav, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

 2:27 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº said,ºº [As] ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº liveth,º unlessºº thou hadst spoken,ºº surelyº thenº in the morningº the peopleº had gone upºº every oneº from followingºº his brother.º

 2:27 And Yoav said, [As] Elohim liveth, unless thou hadst spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

 2:28 So Yô´äv יוֹאָבº blewºº a trumpet,º and allº the peopleº stoodº still,ºº and pursuedºº afterº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº noº more,º neitherº foughtºº they any more.ºº

 2:28 So Yoav blew a trumpet, and all the people stood still, and pursued after Yisrael no more, neither fought they any more.

 2:29 And ´Avnër אַבנֵרº and his menºº walkedºº allº thatº nightº through the plain,º and passed overººº Yardën יַרדֵּן,º and went throughººº allº Bi±rôn בִּתרוֹן,º and they cameºº to Maçánayim מַחֲנַיִם.º

 2:29 And Avner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and passed over Yarden, and went through all Bithron, and they came to Machanayim.

 2:30 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº returnedºº from followingºº ´Avnër אַבנֵר:º and when he had gatheredºº all the peopleº together,ººººº there lackedºº of Däwið's דָּוִדº servantsººº nineteenºº menº and `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵל.º

 2:30 And Yoav returned from following Avner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of Dawid's servants nineteen men and Asah-El.

 2:31 But the servantsº of Däwið דָּוִדº had smittenºº of Binyämîn בִּניָמִין,ºº and of ´Avnër's אַבנֵרº men,ººº [so that] threeº hundredº and threescoreº menº died.ºº

 2:31 But the servants of Dawid had smitten of Binyamin, and of Avner's men, [so that] three hundred and threescore men died.

 2:32 ¶ And they took upººº `Á$à ´Ël עֲשָׂה־אֵל,º and buriedºº him in the sepulchreº of his father,º whichº [was in] Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶם.º And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº and his menºº wentººº allº night,º and they came to Çevrôn חֶברוֹןº at break of day.ºº

 2:32 ¶ And they took up Asah-El, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which [was in] Beth-Lachem. And Yoav and his men went all night, and they came to Chevron at break of day.
