 1:1 ¶ Now it came to passº afterº the deathº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º when Däwið דָּוִדº was returnedºº from the slaughterººº ofº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים,º and Däwið דָּוִדº had abodeºº twoº daysº in Xîklaq צִיקלַג;º

 1:1 ¶ Now it came to pass after the death of Shaul, when Dawid was returned from the slaughter of the Amaleqim, and Dawid had abode two days in Tziqlag;

 1:2 It came even to passº on the thirdº day,º that, behold,º a manº cameºº out ofº the campº fromºº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº with his clothesº rent,ºº and earthº uponº his head:º and [so] it was,º when he cameºº toº Däwið דָּוִד,º that he fellºº to the earth,º and did obeisance.ºº

 1:2 It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Shaul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and [so] it was, when he came to Dawid, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

 1:3 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº unto him, From whenceººº comestºº thou? And he saidºº untoº him, Out of the campºº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº am I escaped.ºº

 1:3 And Dawid said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Yisrael am I escaped.

 1:4 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº him, Howº wentº the matter?º I pray thee,º tellºº me. And he answered,ºº Thatº the peopleº are fledºº fromº the battle,º and manyºº ofº the peopleº alsoº are fallenºº and dead;ºº and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº and Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº his sonº are deadºº also.º

 1:4 And Dawid said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Shaul and Yehonathan his son are dead also.

 1:5 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº the young manº that toldºº him, Howº knowestºº thou thatº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº and Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº his sonº be dead?ºº

 1:5 And Dawid said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Shaul and Yehonathan his son be dead?

 1:6 And the young manº that toldºº him said,ºº As I happenedºº by chanceºº upon mountº Gilböå` גִּלבֹּעַ,º behold,º Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº leanedºº uponº his spear;º and, lo,º the chariotsº and horsemenºº followed hardºº after him.

 1:6 And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Shaul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

 1:7 And when he lookedºº behindº him, he sawºº me, and calledºº untoº me. And I answered,ºº Hereº [am] I.

 1:7 And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here [am] I.

 1:8 And he saidºº unto me, Whoº [art] thou?º And I answeredºº him,º Iº [am] an `Ámälëkî עֲמָלֵקִי.º

 1:8 And he said unto me, Who [art] thou? And I answered him, I [am] an Amaleqi.

 1:9 He saidºº untoº me again, Stand,ºº I pray thee,º uponº me, and slayºº me: forº anguishº is comeºº upon me, becauseº my lifeº [is] yetº wholeº in me.

 1:9 He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life [is] yet whole in me.

 1:10 So I stoodºº uponº him, and slewºº him, becauseº I was sureºº thatº he could notº liveºº afterº thatº he was fallen:ºº and I tookºº the crownº thatº [was] uponº his head,º and the braceletº thatº [was] onº his arm,º and have broughtºº them hitherº untoº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹן.º

 1:10 So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that [was] upon his head, and the bracelet that [was] on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my adon.

 1:11 Then Däwið דָּוִדº took holdºº on his clothes,º and rentºº them; and likewiseº allº the menºº thatº [were] withº him:

 1:11 Then Dawid took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that [were] with him:

 1:12 And they mourned,ºº and wept,ºº and fastedºº untilº even,º forº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and forº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº his son,º and forº the peopleº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and forº the houseº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º becauseº they were fallenºº by the sword.º

 1:12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Shaul, and for Yehonathan his son, and for the people of Yahweh, and for the house of Yisrael; because they were fallen by the sword.

 1:13 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº the young manº that toldºº him, Whenceººº [art] thou?º And he answered,ºº Iº [am] the sonº of a stranger,ºº an `Ámälëkî עֲמָלֵקִי.º

 1:13 ¶ And Dawid said unto the young man that told him, Whence [art] thou? And he answered, I [am] the son of a stranger, an Amaleqi.

 1:14 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº him, Howº wast thou notº afraidºº to stretch forthºº thine handº to destroyººº Yähwè's יָהוֶהº anointed?º

 1:14 And Dawid said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed?

 1:15 And Däwið דָּוִדº calledºº oneº of the young men,ºº and said,ºº Go near,ºº [and] fallºº upon him. And he smoteºº him that he died.ºº

 1:15 And Dawid called one of the young men, and said, Go near, [and] fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

 1:16 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº him, Thy bloodº [be] uponº thy head;º forº thy mouthº hath testifiedºº against thee, saying,ºº Iº have slainººº Yähwè's יָהוֶהº anointed.º

 1:16 And Dawid said unto him, Thy blood [be] upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain Yahweh's anointed.

 1:17 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº lamentedºº withº thisº lamentationº overº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº and overº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº his son:º

 1:17 ¶ And Dawid lamented with this lamentation over Shaul and over Yehonathan his son:

 1:18 (Also he badeºº them teachºº the childrenº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָהº [the use of] the bow:º behold,º [it is] writtenºº inº the bookº of Yäšär יָשָׁר.)º

 1:18 (Also he bade them teach the children of Yehudah [the use of] the bow: behold, [it is] written in the book of Yashar.)

 1:19 The beautyº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº is slainº uponº thy high places:º howº are the mightyº fallen!ºº

 1:19 The beauty of Yisrael is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

 1:20 Tellºº [it] notº in Ga± גַּת,º publishºº [it] notº in the streetsº of ´Aškælôn אַשׁקְלוֹן;º lestº the daughtersº of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּיםº rejoice,ºº lestº the daughtersº of the uncircumcisedº triumph.ºº

 1:20 Tell [it] not in Gath, publish [it] not in the streets of Ashqelon; lest the daughters of the Pelishtim rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

 1:21 Ye mountainsº of Gilböå` גִּלבֹּעַ,º [let there be] noº dew,º neitherº [let there be] rain,º uponº you, nor fieldsº of offerings:º forº thereº the shieldº of the mightyº is vilely cast away,ºº the shieldº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º [as though he had] notº [been] anointedºº with oil.º

 1:21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, [let there be] no dew, neither [let there be] rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Shaul, [as though he had] not [been] anointed with oil.

 1:22 From the bloodºº of the slain,º from the fatºº of the mighty,º the bowº of Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº turnedºº notº back,º and the swordº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº returnedºº notº empty.º

 1:22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Yehonathan turned not back, and the sword of Shaul returned not empty.

 1:23 Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº and Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº [were] lovelyºº and pleasantº in their lives,º and in their deathº they were notº divided:ºº they were swifterºº than eagles,ºº they were strongerºº than lions.ºº

 1:23 Shaul and Yehonathan [were] lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

 1:24 Ye daughtersº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º weepº overººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º who clothedºº you in scarlet,º withº [other] delights,º who putºº onº ornamentsº of goldº uponº your apparel.º

 1:24 Ye daughters of Yisrael, weep over Shaul, who clothed you in scarlet, with [other] delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

 1:25 Howº are the mightyº fallenºº in the midstº of the battle!º O Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן,º [thou wast] slainº inº thine high places.º

 1:25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Yehonathan, [thou wast] slain in thine high places.

 1:26 I am distressedºº forº thee, my brotherº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן:º veryº pleasantºº hast thou been unto me: thy loveº to me was wonderful,ºº passing the loveºº of women.º

 1:26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Yehonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

 1:27 Howº are the mightyº fallen,ºº and the weaponsº of warº perished!ºº

 1:27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
