 13:1 ¶ And it came to passº afterº this,º that ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº the sonº of Däwið דָּוִדº had a fairº sister,º whose nameº [was] Tämär תָּמָר;º and ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº the sonº of Däwið דָּוִדº lovedºº her.

 13:1 ¶ And it came to pass after this, that Avshalom the son of Dawid had a fair sister, whose name [was] Tamar; and Amnon the son of Dawid loved her.

 13:2 And ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº was so vexed,ººº that he fell sickºº forº his sisterº Tämär תָּמָר;º forº sheº [was] a virgin;º and ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº thoughtº it hardºº for him to doºº any thingº to her.

 13:2 And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she [was] a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.

 13:3 But ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº had a friend,º whose nameº [was] Yônäðäv יוֹנָדָב,º the sonº of Šim`à שִׁמעָהº Däwið's דָּוִדº brother:º and Yônäðäv יוֹנָדָבº [was] a veryº subtilº man.º

 13:3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name [was] Yonadav, the son of Shimah Dawid's brother: and Yonadav [was] a very subtil man.

 13:4 And he saidºº unto him, Whyº [art] thou,º [being] the king'sº son,º leanºº from dayº to day?º wilt thou notº tellºº me? And ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº saidºº unto him, Iº loveººº Tämär תָּמָר,º my brotherº ´Avšälôm's אַבשָׁלוֹםº sister.º

 13:4 And he said unto him, Why [art] thou, [being] the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, my brother Avshalom's sister.

 13:5 And Yônäðäv יוֹנָדָבºº saidºº unto him, Lay thee downºº onº thy bed,º and make thyself sick:ºº and when thy fatherº comethºº to seeºº thee, sayºº untoº him, I pray thee,º let my sisterº Tämär תָּמָרº come,ºº and giveºº me meat,º and dressººº the meatº in my sight,º thatºº I may seeºº [it], and eatºº [it] at her hand.ºº

 13:5 And Yonadav said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may see [it], and eat [it] at her hand.

 13:6 ¶ So ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº lay down,ºº and made himself sick:ºº and when the kingº was comeºº to seeºº him, ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº saidºº untoº the king,º I pray thee,º let Tämär תָּמָרº my sisterº come,ºº and makeºº me a coupleº of cakesº in my sight,º that I may eatºº at her hand.ºº

 13:6 ¶ So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.

 13:7 Then Däwið דָּוִדº sentºº homeº toº Tämär תָּמָר,º saying,ºº Goººº nowº to thy brotherº ´Amnôn's אַמנוֹןº house,º and dressºº him meat.º

 13:7 Then Dawid sent home to Tamar, saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house, and dress him meat.

 13:8 So Tämär תָּמָרº wentººº to her brotherº ´Amnôn's אַמנוֹןº house;º and heº was laid down.ºº And she tookººº flour,º and kneadedºº [it], and made cakesºº in his sight,º and did bakeººº the cakes.º

 13:8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. And she took flour, and kneaded [it], and made cakes in his sight, and did bake the cakes.

 13:9 And she tookººº a pan,º and poured [them] outºº beforeº him; but he refusedºº to eat.ºº And ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº said,ºº Have outºº allº menº fromºº me. And they went outºº everyº manº fromºº him.

 13:9 And she took a pan, and poured [them] out before him; but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man from him.

 13:10 And ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº saidºº untoº Tämär תָּמָר,º Bringºº the meatº into the chamber,º that I may eatºº of thine hand.ºº And Tämär תָּמָרº tookººº the cakesº whichº she had made,ºº and broughtºº [them] into the chamberº to ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº her brother.º

 13:10 And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the chamber, that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought [them] into the chamber to Amnon her brother.

 13:11 And when she had broughtºº [them] untoº him to eat,ºº he took holdºº of her, and saidºº unto her, Comeºº lieºº withº me, my sister.º

 13:11 And when she had brought [them] unto him to eat, he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, my sister.

 13:12 And she answeredºº him, Nay,º my brother,º do notº forceºº me; forº noº such thingº oughtº to be doneºº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º doºº notº thouº thisº folly.º

 13:12 And she answered him, Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Yisrael: do not thou this folly.

 13:13 And I,º whitherº shall I causeº my shameº to go?ººº and as for thee,º thou shalt beº as oneº of the foolsº in Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º Nowº therefore, I pray thee,º speakºº untoº the king;º forº he will notº withholdºº me fromº thee.

 13:13 And I, whither shall I cause my shame to go? and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Yisrael. Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; for he will not withhold me from thee.

 13:14 Howbeit he wouldºº notº hearkenºº unto her voice:º but, being strongerºº than she, forcedºº her, and layºº withº her.

 13:14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice: but, being stronger than she, forced her, and lay with her.

 13:15 ¶ Then ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº hatedºº her exceedingly;ººº so thatº the hatredº wherewithº he hatedºº her [was] greaterº than the loveºº wherewithº he had lovedºº her. And ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº saidºº unto her, Arise,ºº be gone.ººº

 13:15 ¶ Then Amnon hated her exceedingly; so that the hatred wherewith he hated her [was] greater than the love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, be gone.

 13:16 And she saidºº unto him, [There is] noº cause:º thisº evilº in sending me awayºº [is] greaterº than the otherºº thatº thou didstºº untoº me. But he wouldºº notº hearkenºº unto her.

 13:16 And she said unto him, [There is] no cause: this evil in sending me away [is] greater than the other that thou didst unto me. But he would not hearken unto her.

 13:17 Then he calledººº his servantº that ministeredºº unto him, and said,ºº Putºº nowºº thisº [woman] outº from me,ººº and boltºº the doorº afterº her.

 13:17 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now this [woman] out from me, and bolt the door after her.

 13:18 And [she had] a garmentº of divers coloursº uponº her: forº with suchº robesº were the king'sº daughtersº [that were] virginsº apparelled.ºº Then his servantºº broughtºº her out,º and boltedºº the doorº afterº her.

 13:18 And [she had] a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters [that were] virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.

 13:19 ¶ And Tämär תָּמָרº putºº ashesº onº her head,º and rentºº her garmentº of divers coloursº thatº [was] onº her, and laidºº her handº onº her head,º and wentºº onºº crying.ºº

 13:19 ¶ And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment of divers colours that [was] on her, and laid her hand on her head, and went on crying.

 13:20 And ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº her brotherº saidºº untoº her, Hath ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº thy brotherº beenº withº thee? but holdº nowº thy peace,ºº my sister:º heº [is] thy brother;º regardºººº notº thisº thing.º So Tämär תָּמָרº remainedºº desolateºº in her brotherº ´Avšälôm's אַבשָׁלוֹםº house.º

 13:20 And Avshalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he [is] thy brother; regard not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Avshalom's house.

 13:21 ¶ But when kingº Däwið דָּוִדº heardºº ofº allº theseº things,º he was veryº wroth.ºº

 13:21 ¶ But when king Dawid heard of all these things, he was very wroth.

 13:22 And ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº spakeºº untoº his brother ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº neitherº goodº norº bad:ºº forº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº hatedººº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹן,º becauseººº he had forcedººº his sisterº Tämär תָּמָר.º

 13:22 And Avshalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Avshalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

 13:23 ¶ And it came to passº after two fullº years,ºº that ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº hadº sheepshearersºº in Ba`al Çäxôr בַּעַל־חָצוֹר,º whichº [is] besideº ´Efrayim אֶפרַיִם:º and ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº invitedºº allº the king'sº sons.º

 13:23 ¶ And it came to pass after two full years, that Avshalom had sheepshearers in Baal-Chatzor, which [is] beside Efrayim: and Avshalom invited all the king's sons.

 13:24 And ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº cameºº toº the king,º and said,ºº Beholdº now,º thy servantº hath sheepshearers;ºº letºº the king,º I beseech thee,º and his servantsº goººº withº thy servant.º

 13:24 And Avshalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants go with thy servant.

 13:25 And the kingº saidºº toº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º Nay,º my son,º let us notº allº nowº go,ººº lestº we be chargeableºº untoº thee. And he pressedºº him: howbeit he wouldºº notº go,ººº but blessedºº him.

 13:25 And the king said to Avshalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him.

 13:26 Then saidºº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º If not,º I pray thee,º let my brotherº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº goººº withº us. And the kingº saidºº unto him, Whyº should he goººº withº thee?

 13:26 Then said Avshalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee?

 13:27 But ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº pressedºº him, that he letº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº and allº the king'sº sonsº goºº withº him.

 13:27 But Avshalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him.

 13:28 ¶ Now ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº had commandedººº his servants,º saying,ºº Markºº ye nowº when ´Amnôn's אַמנוֹןº heartº is merryºº with wine,º and when I sayºº untoº you, Smiteººº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹן;º then killºº him, fearºº not:º have notº Iº commandedºº you? be courageous,ºº and beº valiant.ºº

 13:28 ¶ Now Avshalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

 13:29 And the servantsº of ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº didºº unto ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº asº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº had commanded.ºº Then allº the king'sº sonsº arose,ºº and every manº gat him upºº uponº his mule,º and fled.ºº

 13:29 And the servants of Avshalom did unto Amnon as Avshalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

 13:30 ¶ And it came to pass,º while theyº were in the way,º that tidingsº cameºº toº Däwið דָּוִד,º saying,ºº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº hath slainººº allº the king'sº sons,º and there is notº oneº ofº them left.ºº

 13:30 ¶ And it came to pass, while they were in the way, that tidings came to Dawid, saying, Avshalom hath slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.

 13:31 Then the kingº arose,ºº and tareººº his garments,º and layºº on the earth;º and allº his servantsº stoodºº byº with their clothesº rent.ºº

 13:31 Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent.

 13:32 And Yônäðäv יוֹנָדָב,º the sonº of Šim`à שִׁמעָהº Däwið's דָּוִדº brother,º answeredºº and said,ºº Let notº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº supposeºº [that] they have slainººº allº the young menº the king'sº sons;º forº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº onlyº is dead:ºº forº byº the appointmentº of ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº this hath beenº determinedºº from the dayºº that he forcedººº his sisterº Tämär תָּמָר.º

 13:32 And Yonadav, the son of Shimah Dawid's brother, answered and said, Let not my adon suppose [that] they have slain all the young men the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of Avshalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.

 13:33 Nowº therefore let notº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the kingº takeºº the thingº toº his heart,º to thinkºº that allº the king'sº sonsº are dead:ºº forºº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹןº onlyº is dead.ºº

 13:33 Now therefore let not my adon the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead.

 13:34 But ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº fled.ºº And the young manº that kept the watchºº lifted upººº his eyes,º and looked,ºº and, behold,º there cameºº muchº peopleº by the wayºº of the hillº sideººº behindº him.

 13:34 But Avshalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.

 13:35 And Yônäðäv יוֹנָדָבº saidºº untoº the king,º Behold,º the king'sº sonsº come:ºº as thy servantº said,º soº it is.º

 13:35 And Yonadav said unto the king, Behold, the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is.

 13:36 And it came to pass,º as soon as he had made an endºº of speaking,ºº that, behold,º the king'sº sonsº came,ºº and lifted upºº their voiceº and wept:ºº and the kingº alsoº and allº his servantsº weptºº veryº sore.ºº

 13:36 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voice and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore.

 13:37 ¶ But ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº fled,ºº and wentººº toº Talmay תַּלמַי,º the sonº of `Ammîhûð עַמִּיהוּד,ººº kingº of Gæšûr גְּשׁוּר.º And [Däwið דָּוִד] mournedºº forº his sonº everyº day.º

 13:37 ¶ But Avshalom fled, and went to Talmay, the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And [Dawid] mourned for his son every day.

 13:38 So ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº fled,ºº and wentººº to Gæšûr גְּשׁוּר,º and wasº thereº threeº years.º

 13:38 So Avshalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there three years.

 13:39 And [the soul of] kingº Däwið דָּוִדº longedºº to go forthºº untoº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם:º forº he was comfortedºº concerningº ´Amnôn אַמנוֹן,º seeingº he was dead.ºº

 13:39 And [the soul of] king Dawid longed to go forth unto Avshalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead.
