Now there was long war between the house of Shaul and the house of Dawid: but Dawid waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Shaul waxed weaker and weaker. |

And it came to pass,°

that
´Avnër
אַבנֵר°
made himself strong°°
for the house°
of
Šä´ûl

And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Shaul and the house of Dawid, that Avner made himself strong for the house of Shaul. |

the daughter°

And Shaul had a concubine, whose name [was] Ritzpah, the daughter of Ayyah: and [Ish-Bosheth] said to Avner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine? |

Then was Avner very wroth for the words of Ish-Bosheth, and said, [Am] I a dog's head, which against Yehudah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Shaul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of Dawid, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman? |

To translate the kingdom from the house of Shaul, and to set up the throne of Dawid over Yisrael and over Yehudah, from Dan even to Beer-Sheva. |

because he feared°°°
him. |

And he could not answer Avner a word again, because he feared him. |

And Avner sent messengers to Dawid on his behalf, saying, Whose [is] the land? saying [also], Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand [shall be] with thee, to bring about all Yisrael unto thee. |

And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Mikhal Shaul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face. |

And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bachurim. Then said Avner unto him, Go, return. And he returned. |

Ye sought°°°

past°°
[to be] king°

And Avner had communication with the elders of Yisrael, saying, Ye sought for Dawid in times past [to be] king over you: |

[it]: for°

יָהוֶה°
hath spoken°°
of°
Däwiđ
דָּוִד,°
saying,°°
By the hand°
of my servant°
Däwiđ

I will save°°°
my people°

Now then do [it]: for Yahweh hath spoken of Dawid, saying, By the hand of my servant Dawid I will save my people Yisrael out of the hand of the Pelishtim, and out of the hand of all their enemies. |

And Avner also spake in the ears of Binyamin: and Avner went also to speak in the ears of Dawid in Chevron all that seemed good to Yisrael, and that seemed good to the whole house of Binyamin. |

And Avner said unto Dawid, I will arise and go, and will gather all Yisrael unto my adon the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And Dawid sent Avner away; and he went in peace. |

from [pursuing] a troop,°°

spoil°
with°
them: but

and he was gone°°°

And, behold, the servants of Dawid and Yoav came from [pursuing] a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Avner [was] not with Dawid in Chevron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace. |

And when Yoav was come out from Dawid, he sent messengers after Avner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but Dawid knew [it] not. |

And when Avner was returned to Chevron, Yoav took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth [rib], that he died, for the blood of Asah-El his brother. |

and my kingdom°
[are] guiltless°

from the blood°°

And afterward when Dawid heard [it], he said, I and my kingdom [are] guiltless before Yahweh for ever from the blood of Avner the son of Ner: |

house;°
and let there not°
fail°°
from the house°°

one that hath an issue,°°

Let it rest on the head of Yoav, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Yoav one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread. |

And Dawid said to Yoav, and to all the people that [were] with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Avner. And king Dawid [himself] followed the bier. |

the king°

And I [am] this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Tzeruyah [be] too hard for me: Yahweh shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. |
