 18:1 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº numberedººº the peopleº thatº [were] withº him, and setºº captainsº of thousandsº and captainsº of hundredsº overº them.

 18:1 ¶ And Dawid numbered the people that [were] with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.

 18:2 And Däwið דָּוִדº sent forthºº a third partº ofº the peopleº under the handº of Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and a third partº under the handº of ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº the sonº of Xærûyà צְרוּיָה,º Yô´äv's יוֹאָבº brother,º and a third partº under the handº of ´Ittay אִתַּיº the Gittî גִּתִּי.º And the kingº saidºº untoº the people,º I will surelyºº go forthºº withº you myselfº also.º

 18:2 And Dawid sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Yoav, and a third part under the hand of Avishay the son of Tzeruyah, Yoav's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittay the Gitti. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.

 18:3 But the peopleº answered,ºº Thou shalt notº go forth:ºº forº ifº we fleeºº away,ºº they will notº careººº forº us; neitherº ifº halfº of us die,ºº will they careººº forº us: butº nowº [thou art] worthº tenº thousandº of us: therefore nowº [it is] betterº thatº thou succourºººº us out of the city.ºº

 18:3 But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now [thou art] worth ten thousand of us: therefore now [it is] better that thou succour us out of the city.

 18:4 And the kingº saidºº untoº them, Whatº seemethº you bestºº I will do.ºº And the kingº stoodºº byº the gateº side,º and allº the peopleº came outºº by hundredsº and by thousands.º

 18:4 And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.

 18:5 And the kingº commandedººº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº and ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº and ´Ittay אִתַּי,º saying,ºº [Deal] gentlyº for my sake with the young man,º [even] with ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם.º And allº the peopleº heardºº when the kingº gaveº allº the captainsº chargeºº concerningºº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם.º

 18:5 And the king commanded Yoav and Avishay and Ittay, saying, [Deal] gently for my sake with the young man, [even] with Avshalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Avshalom.

 18:6 ¶ So the peopleº went outºº into the fieldº againstºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º and the battleº wasº in the woodº of ´Efrayim אֶפרַיִם;º

 18:6 ¶ So the people went out into the field against Yisrael: and the battle was in the wood of Efrayim;

 18:7 Whereº the peopleº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº were slainºº beforeº the servantsº of Däwið דָּוִד,º and there wasº thereº a greatº slaughterº thatº dayº of twentyº thousandº [men].

 18:7 Where the people of Yisrael were slain before the servants of Dawid, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand [men].

 18:8 For the battleº wasº thereº scatteredºº overº the faceº of allº the country:º and the woodº devouredºº moreºº peopleº thatº dayº than the swordº devoured.ºº

 18:8 For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

 18:9 ¶ And ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº metºº the servantsºº of Däwið דָּוִד.º And ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº rodeºº uponº a mule,º and the muleº wentºº underº the thick boughsº of a greatº oak,º and his headº caught holdºº of the oak,º and he was taken upºº betweenº the heavenº and the earth;º and the muleº thatº [was] underº him went away.ºº

 18:9 ¶ And Avshalom met the servants of Dawid. And Avshalom rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that [was] under him went away.

 18:10 And a certainº manº sawºº [it], and toldºº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and said,ºº Behold,º I sawººº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº hangedºº in an oak.º

 18:10 And a certain man saw [it], and told Yoav, and said, Behold, I saw Avshalom hanged in an oak.

 18:11 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº saidºº unto the manº that toldºº him, And, behold,º thou sawestºº [him], and whyº didst thou notº smiteºº him thereº to the ground?º and I would have givenºº thee tenº [shekels] of silver,º and aº girdle.º

 18:11 And Yoav said unto the man that told him, And, behold, thou sawest [him], and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [shekels] of silver, and a girdle.

 18:12 And the manº saidºº untoº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º Thoughº Iº should receiveºº a thousandº [shekels] of silverº inº mine hand,º [yet] would I notº put forthºº mine handº againstº the king'sº son:º forº in our hearingº the kingº chargedºº thee and ´Ávîšay אֲבִישַׁיº and ´Ittay אִתַּי,º saying,ºº Bewareºº that noneºº [touch] the young manº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם.º

 18:12 And the man said unto Yoav, Though I should receive a thousand [shekels] of silver in mine hand, [yet] would I not put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Avishay and Ittay, saying, Beware that none [touch] the young man Avshalom.

 18:13 Otherwiseº I should have wroughtºº falsehoodº against mine own life:º for there is no matterººº hidºº fromº the king,º and thou thyselfº wouldest have setºº thyselfº againstºº [me].

 18:13 Otherwise I should have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no matter hid from the king, and thou thyself wouldest have set thyself against [me].

 18:14 Then saidºº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º I may notº tarryºº thusº withº thee.º And he tookºº threeº dartsº in his hand,º and thrustºº them through the heartº of ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º whileº he [was] yet aliveº in the midstº of the oak.º

 18:14 Then said Yoav, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Avshalom, while he [was] yet alive in the midst of the oak.

 18:15 And tenº young menº that bareºº Yô´äv's יוֹאָבº armourº compassed aboutºº and smoteººº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º and slewºº him.

 18:15 And ten young men that bare Yoav's armour compassed about and smote Avshalom, and slew him.

 18:16 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº blewºº the trumpet,º and the peopleº returnedºº from pursuingººº afterº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º forº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº held backººº the people.º

 18:16 And Yoav blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Yisrael: for Yoav held back the people.

 18:17 And they tookººº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º and castºº him intoº a greatº pitº in the wood,º and laidºº a veryº greatº heapº of stonesº uponº him: and allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº fledºº every oneº to his tent.º

 18:17 And they took Avshalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Yisrael fled every one to his tent.

 18:18 ¶ Now ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº in his lifetimeº had takenºº and reared upºº for himselfº a pillar,º whichº [is] in the king'sº dale:º forº he said,ºº I have noº sonº toº keep my nameº in remembrance:ººº and he calledºº the pillarº afterº his own name:º and it is calledºº untoº thisº day,º ´Avšälôm's אַבשָׁלוֹםº place.º

 18:18 ¶ Now Avshalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a pillar, which [is] in the king's dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called unto this day, Avshalom's place.

 18:19 ¶ Then saidºº ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº the sonº of Xäðôk צָדוֹק,º Let me nowº run,ºº and bearººº the kingº tidings,ºº how thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath avengedºº him of his enemies.ººº

 18:19 ¶ Then said Achimaatz the son of Tzadoq, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that Yahweh hath avenged him of his enemies.

 18:20 And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº saidºº unto him, Thouºº shalt notº bear tidingsºº thisº day,º but thou shalt bear tidingsºº anotherº day:º but thisº dayº thou shalt bear no tidings,ººº becauseºº the king'sº sonº is dead.ºº

 18:20 And Yoav said unto him, Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.

 18:21 Then saidºº Yô´äv יוֹאָבº to Cûšî כּוּשִׁי,º Goººº tellºº the kingº whatº thou hast seen.ºº And Cûšî כּוּשִׁיº bowedºº himselfº unto Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º and ran.ºº

 18:21 Then said Yoav to Kushi, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Kushi bowed himself unto Yoav, and ran.

 18:22 Then saidºº ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº the sonº of Xäðôk צָדוֹקº yetº againºº toº Yô´äv יוֹאָב,º But howsoever,ºº let me, Iº prayº thee, alsoº runºº afterº Cûšî כּוּשִׁי.º And Yô´äv יוֹאָבº said,ºº Whereforeºº wilt thouº run,ºº my son,º seeing that thou hast noº tidingsº ready?ºº

 18:22 Then said Achimaatz the son of Tzadoq yet again to Yoav, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Kushi. And Yoav said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready?

 18:23 But howsoever,ºº [said he], let me run.ºº And he saidºº unto him, Run.ºº Then ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº ranºº by the wayº of the plain,º and overranººº Cûšî כּוּשִׁי.º

 18:23 But howsoever, [said he], let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Achimaatz ran by the way of the plain, and overran Kushi.

 18:24 And Däwið דָּוִדº satºº betweenº the twoº gates:º and the watchmanºº went upººº toº the roofº over the gateº untoº the wall,º and lifted upººº his eyes,º and looked,ºº and beholdº a manº runningºº alone.º

 18:24 And Dawid sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone.

 18:25 And the watchmanºº cried,ºº and toldºº the king.º And the kingº said,ºº Ifº he [be] alone,º [there is] tidingsº in his mouth.º And he cameººº apace,ºº and drew near.º

 18:25 And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he [be] alone, [there is] tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.

 18:26 And the watchmanºº sawºº anotherº manº running:ºº and the watchmanºº calledºº untoº the porter,º and said,ºº Beholdº [another] manº runningºº alone.º And the kingº said,ºº Heº alsoº bringeth tidings.ºº

 18:26 And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold [another] man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.

 18:27 And the watchmanºº said,ºº Meº thinkethººº the runningº of the foremostº is like the runningº of ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº the sonº of Xäðôk צָדוֹק.º And the kingº said,ºº Heº [is] a goodº man,º and comethºº with goodº tidings.º

 18:27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Achimaatz the son of Tzadoq. And the king said, He [is] a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

 18:28 And ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº called,ºº and saidºº untoº the king,º All is well.º And he fell downººº to the earthº upon his faceº before the king,º and said,ºº Blessedºº [be] Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º whichº hath delivered upººº the menºº thatº lifted upººº their handº against my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the king.º

 18:28 And Achimaatz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, and said, Blessed [be] Yahweh thy Elohim, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my adon the king.

 18:29 And the kingº said,ºº Is the young manº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº safe?º And ´Áçîma`ax אֲחִימַעַץº answered,ºº When Yô´äv יוֹאָבº sentººº the king'sº servant,º and [me] thy servant,º I sawºº a greatº tumult,º but I knewºº notº whatº [it was].

 18:29 And the king said, Is the young man Avshalom safe? And Achimaatz answered, When Yoav sent the king's servant, and [me] thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what [it was].

 18:30 And the kingº saidºº [unto him], Turn aside,ºº [and] standºº here.º And he turned aside,ºº and stood still.ºº

 18:30 And the king said [unto him], Turn aside, [and] stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.

 18:31 And, behold,º Cûšî כּוּשִׁיº came;ºº and Cûšî כּוּשִׁיº said,ºº Tidings,ºº my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the king:º forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath avengedºº thee this dayº ofºº allº themº that rose upºº againstº thee.

 18:31 And, behold, Kushi came; and Kushi said, Tidings, my adon the king: for Yahweh hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.

 18:32 And the kingº saidºº untoº Cûšî כּוּשִׁי,º Is the young manº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹםº safe?º And Cûšî כּוּשִׁיº answered,ºº The enemiesºº of my ´áðôn אֲדוֹןº the king,º and allº thatº riseºº againstº thee to do [thee] hurt,º beº as [that] young manº [is].

 18:32 And the king said unto Kushi, Is the young man Avshalom safe? And Kushi answered, The enemies of my adon the king, and all that rise against thee to do [thee] hurt, be as [that] young man [is].

 18:33 ¶ And the kingº was much moved,ºº and went upºº toº the chamberº over the gate,º and wept:ºº and as he went,ººº thusº he said,ºº O my sonº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º my son,º my sonº ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם!º would Godºº Iº had diedºº forº thee,ºº O ´Avšälôm אַבשָׁלוֹם,º my son,º my son!º

 18:33 ¶ And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Avshalom, my son, my son Avshalom! would God I had died for thee, O Avshalom, my son, my son!
