 21:1 ¶ And when it came to pass that were parted from them and had set sail, we came with a straight course unto Cos, and the next day unto Rhodes, and from thence unto Patara:

 21:1 ¶ Andº itº came to pass,ºº that afterº weº were gottenºº fromº them,º and had launched,ºº we cameºº with a straight courseºº untoº Coos,º andº theº [day] followingº untoº Rhodes,º and from thenceº untoº Patara:º

 21:2 and having found a ship crossing over unto Phoenicia, we went aboard, and set sail.

 21:2 Andº findingºº a shipº sailing overºº untoº Phenicia,º we went aboard,ºº and set forth.ºº

 21:3 And when we had come in sight of Cyprus, leaving it on the left hand, we sailed unto Syria, and landed at Tyre; for there the ship was to unlade her burden.

 21:3 Nowº when we had discoveredºº Cyprus,ºº weº leftºº itº on the left hand,º and sailedºº intoº Syria,º andº landedºº atº Tyre:º forº thereº theº shipº wasºº to unladeºº her burden.º

 21:4 And having found the disciples, we tarried there seven days: and these said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not set foot in Jerusalem.

 21:4 Andº findingºº disciples,º we tarriedºº thereº sevenº days:º whoº saidºº to Paulº throughº theº Spirit,º that he shouldºº notº go upºº toº Jerusalem.º

 21:5 And when it came to pass that we had accomplished the days, we departed and went on our journey; and they all, with wives and children, brought us on our way till we were out of the city: and kneeling down on the beach, we prayed, and bade each other farewell;

 21:5 Andº whenº weº hadºº accomplishedºº those days,º we departedºº and went our way;ºº and they allº broughtºº usº on our way,ººº withº wivesº andº children,º tillº [we were] outº ofº theº city:º andº we kneeled downººº onº theº shore,º and prayed.ºº

 21:6 and we went on board the ship, but they returned home again.

 21:6 Andº when we had taken our leaveºº one of another,º we tookººº ship;ººº andº theyº returnedººº homeº again.ºººº

 21:7 And when we had finished the voyage from Tyre, we arrived at Ptolemais; and we saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.

 21:7 Andº when weº had finishedºº [our] courseº fromº Tyre,º we cameºº toº Ptolemais,º andº salutedºº theº brethren,º and abodeºº withº themº oneº day.º

 21:8 And on the morrow we departed, and came unto Caesarea: and entering into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, we abode with him.

 21:8 Andº theº nextº [day] we that were ofºº Paul'sº companyºº departed,ºº and cameººº untoº Caesarea:º andº we enteredºº intoº theº houseº of Philipº theº evangelist,º which wasºº [one] ofº theº seven;º and abodeºº withº him.º

 21:9 Now this man had four virgin daughters, who prophesied.

 21:9 Andº the same manº hadºº fourº daughters,º virgins,º which did prophesy.ºº

 21:10 And as we tarried there some days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

 21:10 Andº as weº tarriedºº [there] manyº days,º there came downºº fromº Judaeaº a certainº prophet,º namedº Agabus.º

 21:11 And coming to us, and taking Paul's girdle, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, Thus saith the Holy Spirit, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

 21:11 Andº when he was comeºº untoº us,ºº heº tookºº Paul'sº girdle,º andº boundºº his ownºº handsº andº feet,º and said,ºº Thusº saithºº theº Holyº Ghost,º Soº shallºº theº Jewsº atº Jerusalemº bindºº theº manº thatº ownethºº thisº girdle,º andº shall deliverºº [him] intoº the handsº of the Gentiles.º

 21:12 And when we heard these things, both we and they of that place besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

 21:12 Andº whenº we heardºº these things,º bothº we,º andº they of that place,º besoughtºº himº notº to go upºº toº Jerusalem.º

 21:13 Then Paul answered, What do ye, weeping and breaking my heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

 21:13 Thenº Paulº answered,ºº Whatº meanº yeºº to weepºº andº to breakºº mineº heart?º forº Iº amºº readyº notº to be boundºº only,º butºº alsoºº to dieºº atº Jerusalemº forº theº nameº of theº Lordº Jesus.º

 21:14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

 21:14 Andº when heº wouldºº notº be persuaded,ºº we ceased,ºº saying,ºº Theº willº of theº Lordº be done.ºº

 21:15 And after these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem.

 21:15 Andº afterº thoseº daysº we took up our carriages,ºº and went upºº toº Jerusalem.º

 21:16 And there went with us also [certain] of the disciples from Caesarea, bringing [with them] one Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we should lodge.

 21:16 º Thereº wentºº withº usº alsoº [certain] of theº disciplesº ofº Caesarea,º and broughtºº with themº oneº Mnasonº of Cyprus,º an oldº disciple,º withº whomº we should lodge.ºº

 21:17 And when we were come to Jerusalem, the brethren received us gladly.

 21:17 Andº when weº were comeºº toº Jerusalem,º theº brethrenº receivedºº usº gladly.º

 21:18 And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present.

 21:18 Andº theº [day] followingºº Paulº went inºº withº usº untoº James;º andº allº theº eldersº were present.ºº

 21:19 And when he had saluted them, he rehearsed one by one the things which God had wrought among the Gentiles through his ministry.

 21:19 Andº when he had salutedºº them,º he declaredºº particularlyººº what thingsº Godº had wroughtºº amongº theº Gentilesº byº hisºº ministry.º

 21:20 And they, when they heard it, glorified God; and they said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands there are among the Jews of them that have believed; and they are all zealous for the law:

 21:20 Andº when theyº heardºº [it], they glorifiedºº theº Lord,º andº saidºº unto him,º Thou seest,ºº brother,º how manyº thousandsº of Jewsº there areºº whichº believe;ºº andº they areºº allº zealousº of theº law:º

 21:21 and they have been informed concerning thee, that thou teachest all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children neither to walk after the customs.

 21:21 Andº they are informedºº ofº thee,ºº thatº thou teachestºº allº the Jewsº whichº are amongº theº Gentilesº toº forsakeº Moses,º sayingºº that theyº oughtºº notº to circumciseºº [their] children,º neitherº to walkºº after theº customs.º

 21:22 What is it therefore? They will certainly hear that thou art come.

 21:22 Whatº isº itºº therefore?º the multitudeº mustºº needsº come together:ººº forº they will hearºº thatº thou art come.ºº

 21:23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men that have a vow on them;

 21:23 Doºº thereforeº thisº thatº we sayºº to thee:º Weº haveºº fourº menº which haveºº a vowººº onº them;º

 21:24 these take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges for them, that they may shave their heads: and all shall know that there is no truth in the things whereof they have been informed concerning thee; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, keeping the law.

 21:24 Themº take,ºº and purifyº thyselfºº withº them,º andº be at chargesºº withº them,º thatº they may shaveºº [their] heads:º andº allº may knowºº thatº those things,º whereofº they were informedºº concerningº thee,º areºº nothing;º butº [that] thouº thyselfº alsoº walkest orderly,ºº and keepestºº theº law.º

 21:25 But as touching the Gentiles that have believed, we wrote, giving judgment that they should keep themselves from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from what is strangled, and from fornication.

 21:25 º Asº touchingº theº Gentilesº which believe,ºº weº have writtenºº [and] concludedºº that theyº observeºº noº such thing,º saveº onlyº that they keepºº themselvesº fromº [things] offered to idols,º andº from blood,º andº from strangled,º andº from fornication.º

 21:26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them went into the temple, declaring the fulfilment of the days of purification, until the offering was offered for every one of them.

 21:26 Thenº Paulº tookºº theº men,º and theº nextºº dayº purifyingº himselfºº withº themº enteredºº intoº theº temple,º to signifyºº theº accomplishmentº of theº daysº of purification,º untilº thatº an offeringº should be offeredºº forº everyº oneº of them.º

 21:27 And when the seven days were almost completed, the Jews from Asia, when they saw him in the temple, stirred up all the multitude and laid hands on him,

 21:27 Andº whenº theº sevenº daysº were almostºº ended,ºº theº Jewsº which were ofº Asia,º when they sawºº himº inº theº temple,º stirred upºº allº theº people,º andº laidºº handsº onº him,º

 21:28 crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man that teacheth all men everywhere against the people, and the law, and this place; and moreover he brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath defiled this holy place.

 21:28 Crying out,ºº Menº of Israel,º help:ºº Thisº isºº theº man,º that teachethºº allº [men] every whereº againstº theº people,º andº theº law,º andº thisºº place:º andº furtherº broughtºº Greeksº alsoº intoº theº temple,º andº hath pollutedºº thisºº holyº place.º

 21:29 For they had before seen with him in the city Trophimus the Ephesian, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple.

 21:29 (Forº they hadºº seen beforeºº withº himº inº theº cityº Trophimusº an Ephesian,º whomº they supposedºº thatº Paulº had broughtºº intoº theº temple.)º

 21:30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together; and they laid hold on Paul, and dragged him out of the temple: and straightway the doors were shut.

 21:30 Andº allº theº cityº was moved,ºº andº theº peopleº ran together:ººº andº they tookºº Paul,º and drewºº himº outº ofº theº temple:º andº forthwithº theº doorsº were shut.ºº

 21:31 And as they were seeking to kill him, tidings came up to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in confusion.

 21:31 Andº as they went aboutºº to killºº him,º tidingsº cameºº unto theº chief captainº of theº band,º thatº allº Jerusalemº was in an uproar.ºº

 21:32 And forthwith he took soldiers and centurions, and ran down upon them: and they, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, left off beating Paul.

 21:32 Whoº immediatelyº tookºº soldiersº andº centurions,º and ran downºº untoº them:º andº when theyº sawºº theº chief captainº andº theº soldiers,º they leftººº beatingºº of Paul.º

 21:33 Then the chief captain came near, and laid hold on him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and inquired who he was, and what he had done.

 21:33 Thenº theº chief captainº came near,ºº and tookºº him,º andº commandedºº [him] to be boundº withºº twoº chains;º andº demandedºº whoº he was,ººº andº whatº he hadºº done.ºº

 21:34 And some shouted one thing, some another, among the crowd: and when he could not know the certainty for the uproar, he commanded him to be brought into the castle.

 21:34 Andº someº criedºº one thing,º some another,ººº amongº theº multitude:º andº when he couldºº notº knowºº theº certaintyº forº theº tumult,º he commandedºº himº to be carriedºº intoº theº castle.º

 21:35 And when he came upon the stairs, so it was that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the crowd;

 21:35 Andº whenº he cameºº uponº theº stairs,º so it was,ºº that heº was borneºº ofº theº soldiersº forº theº violenceº of theº people.º

 21:36 for the multitude of the people followed after, crying out, Away with him.

 21:36 Forº theº multitudeº of theº peopleº followed after,ºº crying,ºº Awayºº with him.º

 21:37 And as Paul was about to be brought into the castle, he saith unto the chief captain, May I say something unto thee? And he said, Dost thou know Greek?

 21:37 Andº as Paulº wasº to beºº ledºº intoº theº castle,º he saidºº unto theº chief captain,ºº Mayººº Iº speakººº untoº thee?ºº Whoº said,ºº Canst thou speakºº Greek?ºº

 21:38 Art thou not then the Egyptian, who before these days stirred up to sedition and led out into the wilderness the four thousand men of the Assassins?

 21:38 Artºº notº thouºº thatº Egyptian,º which beforeº theseº daysº madest an uproar,ºº andº leddest outºº intoº theº wildernessº four thousandº menº that were murderers?º

 21:39 But Paul said, I am a Jew, of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and I beseech thee, give me leave to speak unto the people.

 21:39 Butº Paulº said,ºº Iº amººº a manº [whichº am] a Jewº of Tarsus,º [a city] in Cilicia,º a citizenº of noº meanº city:º and,º I beseechºº thee,º sufferºº meº to speakºº untoº theº people.º

 21:40 And when he had given him leave, Paul, standing on the stairs, beckoned with the hand unto the people; and when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew language, saying,

 21:40 Andº when heº had givenºº himº licence,ºº Paulº stoodºº onº theº stairs,º and beckonedººº with theº handº unto theº people.º Andº when there was madeºº a greatº silence,º he spakeºº untoº [them] in theº Hebrewº tongue,º saying,ºº
