 1:1 ¶ The former treatise I made, O Theophilus, concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach,

 1:1 ¶ Theº formerºº treatiseº haveº I made,ºº Oº Theophilus,º ofº allº thatº Jesusº beganºº bothº to doºº andº teach,ºº

 1:2 until the day in which he was received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

 1:2 Untilº the dayº in whichº he was taken up,ºº after that he throughº the Holyº Ghostº had given commandmentsºº unto theº apostlesº whomº he had chosen:ºº

 1:3 To whom he also showed himself alive after his passion by many proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God:

 1:3 To whomº alsoº he shewedººº himselfº aliveºº afterº hisº passionºº byº manyº infallible proofs,º being seenºº of themºº fortyº days,º andº speakingºº of the thingsº pertainingº to theº kingdomº of God:º

 1:4 and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, [said he], ye heard from me:

 1:4 And,º being assembled togetherºº withºº [them], commandedºº themº that they shouldºº notº departºº fromº Jerusalem,º butº waitºº forº theº promiseº of theº Father,º which,º [saith he], ye have heardºº of me.º

 1:5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.

 1:5 Forº Johnº trulyº baptizedºº with water;º butº yeº shall be baptizedºº withº the Holyº Ghostº notº manyºº daysº hence.º

 1:6 They therefore, when they were come together, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

 1:6 Whenº theyºº thereforeº were come together,ºº they askedºº of him,º saying,ºº Lord,ºº wilt thouººº atº thisº timeº restore againºº theº kingdomº to Israel?º

 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know times or seasons, which the Father hath set within His own authority.

 1:7 Andº he saidºº untoº them,º It isºº notº for youº to knowºº the timesº orº the seasons,º whichº theº Fatherº hath putºº inº his ownº power.º

 1:8 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

 1:8 Butº ye shall receiveºº power,º after that theº Holyº Ghostº is comeºº uponº you:º andº ye shall beºº witnessesº unto meº bothº inº Jerusalem,º andº inº allº Judaea,º andº in Samaria,º andº untoº the uttermost partº of theº earth.º

 1:9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

 1:9 Andº when he had spokenºº these things,º while theyº beheld,ºº he was taken up;ºº andº a cloudº receivedºº himº out ofº theirº sight.º

 1:10 And while they were looking stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

 1:10 Andº whileº they looked stedfastlyºººº towardº heavenº as heº went up,ººº behold,ºº twoº menºº stood byºº themº inº whiteº apparel;º

 1:11 who also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, who was received up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.

 1:11 Whichº alsoº said,ºº Ye menº of Galilee,º whyº standº yeºº gazing upºº intoº heaven?º this sameº Jesus,º whichº is taken upºº fromº youº intoº heaven,º shallºº soº comeºº in like mannerºº asºº ye have seenºº himº goºº intoº heaven.º

 1:12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey off.

 1:12 Thenº returnedº theyºº untoº Jerusalemº fromº the mountº calledºº Olivet,º whichº isººº fromº Jerusalemº aº sabbathº day'sº journey.ººº

 1:13 And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James [the son] of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas [the son] of James.

 1:13 Andº whenº they were come in,ºº they went upºº intoº an upper room,º whereº abodeºººº bothº Peter,º andº James,º andº John,º andº Andrew,º Philip,º andº Thomas,º Bartholomew,º andº Matthew,º Jamesº [the son] of Alphaeus,º andº Simonº Zelotes,º andº Judasº [the brother] of James.º

 1:14 These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

 1:14 Theseº allº continuedºººº with one accordº in prayerº andº supplication,º withº the women,º andº Maryº theº motherº of Jesus,º andº withº hisº brethren.º

 1:15 ¶ And in these days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said (and there was a multitude of persons [gathered] together, about a hundred and twenty),

 1:15 ¶ Andº inº thoseº daysº Peterº stood upºº inº the midstº of theº disciples,º and said,ººº (theº numberº of namesº togetherºº wereºº aboutº an hundredº and twenty,)ºº

 1:16 Brethren, it was needful that the Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to them that took Jesus.

 1:16 Menº [and] brethren,º thisº scriptureº mustºº needsº have been fulfilled,ºº whichº theº Holyº Ghostº byº the mouthº of Davidº spake beforeºº concerningº Judas,º whichº wasºº guideº to them that tookºº Jesus.º

 1:17 For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this ministry.

 1:17 Forº he wasºº numberedºº withº us,º andº had obtainedºº partº of thisº ministry.º

 1:18 (Now this man obtained a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

 1:18 Nowºº this manºº purchasedºº a fieldº withº theº rewardº of iniquity;º andº fallingºº headlong,º he burst asunderºº in the midst,º andº allº hisº bowelsº gushed out.ºº

 1:19 And it became known to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akeldama, that is, The field of blood.)

 1:19 Andº it wasºº knownº unto allº theº dwellersºº at Jerusalem;º insomuch asº thatº fieldº is calledºº in theirº properº tongue,º Aceldama,º that is to say,ºº The fieldº of blood.º

 1:20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be made desolate, And let no man dwell therein: and, His office let another take.

 1:20 Forº it is writtenºº inº the bookº of Psalms,º Letºº hisº habitationº beºº desolate,º andº letºº noº manºº dwellºº therein:ºº andº hisº bishoprickº letºº anotherº take.ºº

 1:21 Of the men therefore that have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us,

 1:21 Whereforeº ofº theseº menº which have companiedºº with usº allº the timeº thatºº theº Lordº Jesusº wentºº inºº andº outºº amongº us,º

 1:22 beginning from the baptism of John, unto the day that he was received up from us, of these must one become a witness with us of his resurrection.

 1:22 Beginningºº fromº theº baptismº of John,º untoº that same dayº thatº he was taken upºº fromº us,º mustºº oneº beº ordainedºº to be a witnessº withº usº of hisº resurrection.º

 1:23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

 1:23 Andº they appointedºº two,º Josephº calledºº Barsabas,º whoº was surnamedºº Justus,º andº Matthias.º

 1:24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show of these two the one whom thou hast chosen,

 1:24 Andº they prayed,ºº and said,ºº Thou,º Lord,º which knowest the heartsº of allº [men], shewºº whetherºº ofº theseº twoº thou hast chosen,ºº

 1:25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas fell away, that he might go to his own place.

 1:25 That he may takeºº partº of thisº ministryº andº apostleship,º fromº whichº Judasº by transgression fell,ºº that he might goºº toº his ownº place.º

 1:26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

 1:26 Andº they gave forthºº theirº lots;º andº theº lotº fellºº uponº Matthias;º andº he was numberedºº withº theº elevenº apostles.º
