 5:1 ¶ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

 5:1 ¶ Butº a certainº manº namedº Ananias,º withº Sapphiraº hisºº wife,º soldºº a possession,º

 5:2 and kept back [part] of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

 5:2 Andº kept backºº [part] ofº theº price,º hisº wifeº alsoº being privyºº [to it], andº broughtºº a certainº part,º and laidºº [it] atº theº apostles'º feet.º

 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thy heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back [part] of the price of the land?

 5:3 Butº Peterº said,ºº Ananias,º whyº hath Satanº filledºº thineº heartºº to lieºº to theº Holyº Ghost,º andº to keep backºº [part] ofº theº priceº of theº land?º

 5:4 While it remained, did it not remain thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thy power? How is it that thou hast conceived this thing in thy heart? thou has not lied unto men, but unto God.

 5:4 Whiles it remained,ºº was it notº thine own?ºººº andº after it was sold,ºº wasº it notºº inº thine ownº power?ºº whyºº hast thou conceivedºº thisº thingº inº thineº heart?º thou hastºº notº liedºº unto men,º butº unto God.º

 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down and gave up the ghost: and great fear came upon all that heard it.

 5:5 Andº Ananiasº hearingºº theseº wordsº fell down,ºº and gave up the ghost:ºº andº greatº fearº cameºº onº allº them that heardºº these things.º

 5:6 And the young men arose and wrapped him round, and they carried him out and buried him.

 5:6 Andº theº young menº arose,ºº woundºº himº up,ººº andº carried [him] out,ºº and buriedºº [him].

 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

 5:7 Andº it wasºº aboutº the spaceºº of threeº hoursº after,º whenº hisº wife,º notº knowingºº what was done,ºº came in.ºº

 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.

 5:8 Andº Peterº answeredºº unto her,º Tellºº meº whetherº ye soldºº theº landº for so much?º Andº sheº said,ºº Yea,º for so much.º

 5:9 But Peter [said] unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.

 5:9 Thenº Peterº saidºº untoº her,º Howº is it thatº yeº have agreed togetherºº to temptºº theº Spiritº of the Lord?º behold,ºº theº feetº of them which have buriedºº thyº husbandº [are] atº theº door,º andº shall carryºº theeº out.ººº

 5:10 And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost: and the young men came in and found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her by her husband.

 5:10 Thenº fell she downºº straightwayº atº hisº feet,º andº yielded up the ghost:ºº andº theº young menº came in,ºº and foundºº herº dead,º and,º carrying [her] forth,ºº buriedºº [her] byº herº husband.º

 5:11 And great fear came upon the whole church, and upon all that heard these things.

 5:11 Andº greatº fearº cameºº uponº allº theº church,º andº uponº as many asº heardºº these things.º

 5:12 ¶ And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.

 5:12 ¶ Andº byº theº handsº of theº apostlesº wereºº manyº signsº andº wondersº wroughtºººº amongº theº people;º (andº they wereºº allº with one accordº inº Solomon'sº porch.º

 5:13 But of the rest durst no man join himself to them: howbeit the people magnified them;

 5:13 Andº of theº restº durstºº no manº joinº himselfºº to them:º butº theº peopleº magnifiedºº them.º

 5:14 and believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;

 5:14 Andº believersºº wereºº the moreº addedºº to theº Lord,º multitudesº bothº of menº andº women.)º

 5:15 insomuch that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that, as Peter came by, at the least his shadow might overshadow some one of them.

 5:15 Insomuchº thatº they brought forthºº theº sickº intoº theº streets,º andº laidºº [them] onº bedsº andº couches,º thatº at the leastº theº shadowº of Peterº passing byºº might overshadowºº someº of them.º

 5:16 And there also came together the multitudes from the cities round about Jerusalem, bring sick folk, and them that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

 5:16 º There cameºº alsoº a multitudeº [out] of theº citiesº round aboutº untoº Jerusalem,º bringingºº sickº folks,º andº them which were vexedºº withº uncleanº spirits:º and theyº were healedºº every one.º

 5:17 ¶ But the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with jealousy,

 5:17 ¶ Thenº theº high priestº rose up,ºº andº allº theyºº that were withº him,º (whichº isºº the sectº of theº Sadducees,)º and were filledºº with indignation,º

 5:18 and laid hands on the apostles, and put them in public ward.

 5:18 Andº laidºº theirº handsº onº theº apostles,º andº putºº themºº inº the commonº prison.º

 5:19 But an angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them out, and said,

 5:19 Butº the angelº of the Lordº byº nightº openedºº theº prisonº doors,º andº broughtºº themº forth,ººº and said,ºº

 5:20 Go ye, and stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this Life.

 5:20 Go,ººº standºº andº speakºº inº theº templeº to theº peopleº allº theº wordsº of thisº life.º

 5:21 And when they heard [this], they entered into the temple about daybreak, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison-house to have them brought.

 5:21 Andº when they heardºº [that], they enteredºº intoº theº templeº early in the morning,ºº andº taught.ºº Butº theº high priestº came,ºº andº theyº that were withº him,º and calledºº the councilº together,ºººº andº allº theº senateº of theº childrenº of Israel,º andº sentºº toº theº prisonº to haveºº themº brought.ºº

 5:22 But the officers that came found them not in the prison; and they returned, and told,

 5:22 Butº when theº officersº came,ºº and foundºº themº notº inº theº prison,º theyº returned,ºº andº told,ºº

 5:23 saying, The prison-house we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing at the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.

 5:23 Saying,ººº Theº prisonº trulyº foundº weºº shutºº withº allº safety,º andº theº keepersº standingºº withoutº beforeº theº doors:º butº when we had opened,ºº we foundºº no manº within.º

 5:24 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were much perplexed concerning them whereunto this would grow.

 5:24 Nowº whenºº theºº high priestº andº theº captainº of theº templeº andº theº chief priestsº heardºº theseº things,º they doubtedºº ofº themº whereuntoºº thisº would grow.ººº

 5:25 And there came one and told them, Behold, the men whom ye put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people.

 5:25 Thenº cameºº oneº andº toldºº them,º saying,ººº Behold,ºº theº menº whomº ye putºº inº prisonº areºº standingºº inº theº temple,º andº teachingºº theº people.º

 5:26 Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them, [but] without violence; for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.

 5:26 Thenº wentºº theº captainº withº theº officers,º and broughtºº themº withoutºº violence:º forº they fearedºº theº people,º lestº they should have been stoned.ºº

 5:27 And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

 5:27 Andº when they had broughtºº them,º they setºº [them] beforeº theº council:º andº theº high priestº askedºº them,º

 5:28 saying, We strictly charged you not to teach in this name: and behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.

 5:28 Saying,ºº Didºº notº we straitlyº commandººº youº that ye shouldºº notº teachºº inº thisº name?º and,º behold,ºº ye have filledºº Jerusalemº with yourº doctrine,º andº intendºº to bringºº thisº man'sº bloodº uponº us.º

 5:29 ¶ But Peter and the apostles answered and said, We must obey God rather than men.

 5:29 ¶ Thenº Peterº andº theº [other] apostlesº answeredºº and said,ºº We oughtºº to obeyºº Godº ratherº thanº men.º

 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, hanging him on a tree.

 5:30 Theº Godº of ourº fathersº raised upºº Jesus,º whomº yeº slewºº and hangedºº onº a tree.º

 5:31 Him did God exalt with his right hand [to be] a Prince and a Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and remission of sins.

 5:31 Himº hath Godº exaltedºº with hisºº right handº [to be] a Princeº andº a Saviour,º for to giveºº repentanceº to Israel,º andº forgivenessº of sins.º

 5:32 And we are witnesses of these things; and [so is] the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

 5:32 Andº weº areºº hisº witnessesº of theseº things;º andº [so is] alsoº theº Holyº Ghost,º whomº Godº hath givenºº to them that obeyºº him.º

 5:33 ¶ But they, when they heard this, were cut to the heart, and minded to slay them.

 5:33 ¶ Whenº theyº heardºº [that], they were cutºº [to the heart], andº took counselºº to slayºº them.º

 5:34 But there stood up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in honor of all the people, and commanded to put the men forth a little while.

 5:34 Thenº stood there upºº oneº inº theº council,º a Pharisee,º namedº Gamaliel,º a doctor of the law,º had in reputationº among allº theº people,º and commandedºº to putºº theº apostlesº forthº aº little space;ºº

 5:35 And he said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves as touching these men, what ye are about to do.

 5:35 Andº saidºº untoº them,º Ye menº of Israel,º take heedºº to yourselvesº whatº ye intendºº to doºº as touchingº theseº men.º

 5:36 For before these days rose up Theudas, giving himself out to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were dispersed, and came to nought.

 5:36 Forº beforeº theseº daysº rose upºº Theudas,º boastingºº himselfº to beºº somebody;º to whomº a numberº of men,º aboutº four hundred,º joinedº themselves:ºº whoº was slain;ººº andº all,º as many asº obeyedºº him,º were scattered,ºº andº broughtºº toº nought.º

 5:37 After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the enrolment, and drew away [some of the] people after him: he also perished; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered abroad.

 5:37 Afterº this manº rose upºº Judasº of Galileeº inº theº daysº of theº taxing,º andº drew awayºº muchº peopleº afterº him:ºº he alsoº perished;ºº andº all,º [even] as many asº obeyedºº him,º were dispersed.ºº

 5:38 And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown:

 5:38 Andº nowº I sayºº unto you,º Refrainºº fromº theseº men,º andº letºº themº alone:ººº forº ifº thisº counselº orº thisº workº beºº ofº men,º it will come to nought:ºº

 5:39 but if it is of God, ye will not be able to overthrow them; lest haply ye be found even to be fighting against God.

 5:39 Butº ifº it beºº ofº God,º ye cannotººº overthrowºº it;º lest haplyº ye be foundºº evenº to fight against God.ºº

 5:40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles unto them, they beat them and charged them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

 5:40 Andº to himº they agreed:ºº andº when they had calledºº theº apostles,º and beatenºº [them], they commandedºº that they shouldºº notº speakºº inº theº nameº of Jesus,º andº letºº themº go.ººº

 5:41 ¶ They therefore departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the Name.

 5:41 ¶ Andºº theyº departedººº fromº the presenceº of theº council,º rejoicingºº thatº they were counted worthyºº to suffer shameºº forº hisº name.º

 5:42 And every day, in the temple and at home, they ceased not to teach and to preach Jesus [as] the Christ.

 5:42 Andº dailyºº inº theº temple,º andº in everyº house,ºº they ceasedºº notº to teachºº andº preachºº Jesusº Christ.º
