 15:1 ¶ Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº also saidºº untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º Yähwè יָהוֶהº sentºº me to anointºº thee [to be] kingº overº his people,º overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º nowº therefore hearkenºº thou unto the voiceº of the wordsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 15:1 ¶ Shemuel also said unto Shaul, Yahweh sent me to anoint thee [to be] king over his people, over Yisrael: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of Yahweh.

 15:2 Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº Xævä´ô± צְבָאוֹת,º I rememberºº [that]º whichº `Ámälëk עֲמָלֵקº didºº to Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º howº he laidºº [wait] for him in the way,º when he came upºº from Mixrayim מִצרַיִם.ºº

 15:2 Thus saith Yahweh Tzevaoth, I remember [that] which Amaleq did to Yisrael, how he laid [wait] for him in the way, when he came up from Mitzrayim.

 15:3 Nowº goººº and smiteººº `Ámälëk עֲמָלֵק,º and utterly destroyººº allº thatº they have, and spareººº them not;º but slayºº both manºº andº woman,º infantºº and suckling,ºº oxºº and sheep,º camelºº and ass.º

 15:3 Now go and smite Amaleq, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

 15:4 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº gatheredºº the peopleº together,ºººº and numberedºº them in †ælä´îm טְלָאִים,º two hundredº thousandº footmen,º and tenº thousandºº menº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה.º

 15:4 And Shaul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Yehudah.

 15:5 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº cameºº toº a cityº of `Ámälëk עֲמָלֵק,º and laid waitºººº in the valley.º

 15:5 And Shaul came to a city of Amaleq, and laid wait in the valley.

 15:6 ¶ And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº untoº the Kênîm קֵינִים,º Go,ººº depart,ºº get you downºº from amongºº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים,º lestº I destroyºº you withº them: for yeº shewedºº kindnessº toº allº the childrenº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º when they came upºº out of Mixrayim מִצרַיִם.ºº So the Kênîm קֵינִיםº departedºº from amongºº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים.º

 15:6 ¶ And Shaul said unto the Qenim, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amaleqim, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Yisrael, when they came up out of Mitzrayim. So the Qenim departed from among the Amaleqim.

 15:7 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº smoteººº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִיםº from Çáwîlà חֲוִילָהºº [until] thou comestºº to Šûr שׁוּר,º thatº [is] overº againstº Mixrayim מִצרַיִם.º

 15:7 And Shaul smote the Amaleqim from Chawilah [until] thou comest to Shur, that [is] over against Mitzrayim.

 15:8 And he tookººº ´Áqäq אֲגָגº the kingº of the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִיםº alive,º and utterly destroyedºº allº the peopleº with the edgeº of the sword.º

 15:8 And he took Agag the king of the Amaleqim alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

 15:9 But Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº and the peopleº sparedººº ´Áqäq אֲגָג,º and the bestº of the sheep,º and of the oxen,º and of the fatlings,º and the lambs,º and allº [that was] good,º and wouldºº notº utterly destroyºº them: but everyº thingº [that was] vileº and refuse,ºº that they destroyed utterly.ºº

 15:9 But Shaul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all [that was] good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing [that was] vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

 15:10 ¶ Then cameº the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº untoº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º saying,ºº

 15:10 ¶ Then came the word of Yahweh unto Shemuel, saying,

 15:11 It repentethºº meº thatº I have set upººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº [to be] king:º forº he is turned backºº from followingºº me, and hath notº performedºº my commandments.º And it grievedºº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל;º and he criedºº untoº Yähwè יָהוֶהº allº night.º

 15:11 It repenteth me that I have set up Shaul [to be] king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Shemuel; and he cried unto Yahweh all night.

 15:12 And when Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº rose earlyºº to meetºº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº in the morning,º it was toldºº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º saying,ºº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº cameºº to Carmel כַּרמֶל,º and, behold,º he set him upºº a place,º and is gone about,ºº and passed on,ºº and gone downºº to Gilgäl גִּלגָּל.º

 15:12 And when Shemuel rose early to meet Shaul in the morning, it was told Shemuel, saying, Shaul came to Karmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

 15:13 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº cameºº toº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל:º and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº unto him, Blessedºº [be] thouº of Yähwè יָהוֶה:º I have performedººº the commandmentº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 15:13 And Shemuel came to Shaul: and Shaul said unto him, Blessed [be] thou of Yahweh: I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.

 15:14 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº said,ºº Whatº [meaneth] then thisº bleatingº of the sheepº in mine ears,º and the lowingº of the oxenº whichº Iº hear?ºº

 15:14 And Shemuel said, What [meaneth] then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

 15:15 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº said,ºº They have broughtºº them from the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים:ºº forº the peopleº sparedººº the bestº of the sheepº and of the oxen,º to sacrificeººº unto Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים;º and the restºº we have utterly destroyed.ºº

 15:15 And Shaul said, They have brought them from the Amaleqim: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto Yahweh thy Elohim; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

 15:16 Then Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº saidºº untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º Stay,ºº and I will tellºº theeº whatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath saidºº toº me this night.º And he saidºº unto him, Say on.ºº

 15:16 Then Shemuel said unto Shaul, Stay, and I will tell thee what Yahweh hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

 15:17 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº said,ºº Whenº thouº [wast] littleº in thine own sight,º [wast] thouº notº [made] the headº of the tribesº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº anointedºº thee kingº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?º

 15:17 And Shemuel said, When thou [wast] little in thine own sight, [wast] thou not [made] the head of the tribes of Yisrael, and Yahweh anointed thee king over Yisrael?

 15:18 And Yähwè יָהוֶהº sentºº thee on a journey,º and said,ºº Goººº and utterly destroyººº the sinnersºº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים,º and fightºº against them untilº they be consumed.ºº

 15:18 And Yahweh sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amaleqim, and fight against them until they be consumed.

 15:19 Whereforeº then didst thou notº obeyºº the voiceº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º but didst flyºº uponº the spoil,º and didstºº evilº in the sightº of Yähwè יָהוֶה?º

 15:19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of Yahweh, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of Yahweh?

 15:20 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº untoº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º Yea,º I have obeyedºº the voiceº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and have goneººº the wayº whichº Yähwè יָהוֶהº sentºº me, and have broughtººº ´Áqäq אֲגָגº the kingº of `Ámälëk עֲמָלֵק,º and have utterly destroyedºº the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים.º

 15:20 And Shaul said unto Shemuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of Yahweh, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amaleq, and have utterly destroyed the Amaleqim.

 15:21 But the peopleº tookºº of the spoil,ºº sheepº and oxen,º the chiefº of the things which should have been utterly destroyed,º to sacrificeºº unto Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº in Gilgäl גִּלגָּל.º

 15:21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto Yahweh thy Elohim in Gilgal.

 15:22 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº said,ºº Hath Yähwè יָהוֶהº [as great] delightº in burnt offeringsº and sacrifices,º as in obeyingºº the voiceº of Yähwè יָהוֶה?º Behold,º to obeyºº [is] betterº than sacrifice,ºº [and] to hearkenºº than the fatºº of rams.º

 15:22 And Shemuel said, Hath Yahweh [as great] delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yahweh? Behold, to obey [is] better than sacrifice, [and] to hearken than the fat of rams.

 15:23 Forº rebellionº [is as] the sinº of witchcraft,º and stubbornnessºº [is as] iniquityº and idolatry.º Becauseº thou hast rejectedººº the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º he hath also rejectedºº thee from [being] king.ºº

 15:23 For rebellion [is as] the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness [is as] iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of Yahweh, he hath also rejected thee from [being] king.

 15:24 ¶ And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº untoº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º I have sinned:ºº forº I have transgressedººº the commandmentº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and thy words:º becauseº I fearedººº the people,º and obeyedºº their voice.º

 15:24 ¶ And Shaul said unto Shemuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

 15:25 Nowº therefore, I pray thee,º pardonººº my sin,º and turn againºº withº me, that I may worshipºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 15:25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh.

 15:26 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº saidºº untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º I will notº returnºº withº thee: forº thou hast rejectedººº the wordº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath rejectedºº thee from beingºº kingº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 15:26 And Shemuel said unto Shaul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of Yahweh, and Yahweh hath rejected thee from being king over Yisrael.

 15:27 And as Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº turned aboutºº to go away,ººº he laid holdºº upon the skirtº of his mantle,º and it rent.ºº

 15:27 And as Shemuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

 15:28 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº saidºº untoº him, Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath rentººº the kingdomº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº fromºº thee this day,º and hath givenºº it to a neighbourº of thine, [that is] betterº thanº thou.

 15:28 And Shemuel said unto him, Yahweh hath rent the kingdom of Yisrael from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, [that is] better than thou.

 15:29 And alsoº the Strengthº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº will notº lieºº norº repent:ºº forº he [is] notº a man,º that heº should repent.ºº

 15:29 And also the Strength of Yisrael will not lie nor repent: for he [is] not a man, that he should repent.

 15:30 Then he said,ºº I have sinned:ºº [yet] honourºº me now,º I pray thee,º beforeº the eldersº of my people,º and beforeº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and turn againºº withº me, that I may worshipºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº thy ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 15:30 Then he said, I have sinned: [yet] honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Yisrael, and turn again with me, that I may worship Yahweh thy Elohim.

 15:31 So Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº turned againºº afterº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל;º and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº worshippedºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 15:31 So Shemuel turned again after Shaul; and Shaul worshipped Yahweh.

 15:32 ¶ Then saidºº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º Bring ye hitherºº toº meº ´Áqäq אֲגָגº the kingº of the `Ámälëkîm עֲמָלֵקִים.º And ´Áqäq אֲגָגº cameººº untoº him delicately.º And ´Áqäq אֲגָגº said,ºº Surelyº the bitternessº of deathº is past.ºº

 15:32 ¶ Then said Shemuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amaleqim. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

 15:33 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº said,ºº Asº thy swordº hath made womenº childless,ºº soº shall thy motherº be childlessºº among women.ºº And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº hewedºº ´Áqäq אֲגָגº in piecesºººº beforeº Yähwè יָהוֶהº in Gilgäl גִּלגָּל.º

 15:33 And Shemuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Shemuel hewed Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.

 15:34 ¶ Then Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº wentººº to Rämà רָמָה;º and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº went upºº toº his houseº to Giv`à גִּבעָהº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל.º

 15:34 ¶ Then Shemuel went to Ramah; and Shaul went up to his house to Givah of Shaul.

 15:35 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº came noº moreºº to seeººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº untilº the dayº of his death:º neverthelessº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº mournedºº forº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל:º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº repentedºº thatº he had made Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº kingºººº overº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º

 15:35 And Shemuel came no more to see Shaul until the day of his death: nevertheless Shemuel mourned for Shaul: and Yahweh repented that he had made Shaul king over Yisrael.
