 16:1 ¶ And Yähwè יָהוֶה° said°° unto° Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,° How long°° wilt thou° mourn°° for° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° seeing I° have rejected°° him from reigning°°° over° Yiŝrä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?° fill°° thine horn° with oil,° and go,°°° I will send°° thee to° Yišay יִשַׁי° the Bêŧ Laçmî בֵּית־לַחמִי:° for° I have provided°° me a king° among his sons.°

 16:1 ¶ And Yahweh said unto Shemuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Shaul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Yisrael? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Yishay the Beth-Lachmi: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

 16:2 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° said,°° How° can I go?°°° if Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° hear°° [it], he will kill°° me. And Yähwè יָהוֶה° said,°° Take°° an heifer°° with° thee,° and say,°° I am come°° to sacrifice°° to Yähwè יָהוֶה.°

 16:2 And Shemuel said, How can I go? if Shaul hear [it], he will kill me. And Yahweh said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Yahweh.

 16:3 And call°° Yišay יִשַׁי° to the sacrifice,° and I° will shew°° thee° what° thou shalt do:°° and thou shalt anoint°° unto me [him]° whom° I name°° unto° thee.

 16:3 And call Yishay to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me [him] whom I name unto thee.

 16:4 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° did°°° that which° Yähwè יָהוֶה° spake,°° and came°° to Bêŧ Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶם.° And the elders° of the town° trembled°° at his coming,°°° and said,°° Comest°° thou peaceably?°

 16:4 And Shemuel did that which Yahweh spake, and came to Beth-Lachem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?

 16:5 And he said,°° Peaceably:° I am come°° to sacrifice°° unto Yähwè יָהוֶה:° sanctify°° yourselves,° and come°° with° me to the sacrifice.° And he sanctified°°° Yišay יִשַׁי° and his sons,° and called°° them to the sacrifice.°

 16:5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto Yahweh: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Yishay and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

 16:6 ¶ And it came to pass,° when they were come,°° that he looked°° on°° ´Élî´äv אֱלִיאָב,° and said,°° Surely° Yähwè's יָהוֶה° anointed° [is] before° him.

 16:6 ¶ And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliav, and said, Surely Yahweh's anointed [is] before him.

 16:7 But Yähwè יָהוֶה° said°° unto° Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,° Look°° not° on° his countenance,° or on° the height° of his stature;° because° I have refused°° him: for° [Yähwè יָהוֶה seeth] not° as° man° seeth;°° for° man° looketh°° on the outward appearance,° but Yähwè יָהוֶה° looketh°° on the heart.°

 16:7 But Yahweh said unto Shemuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [Yahweh seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Yahweh looketh on the heart.

 16:8 Then Yišay יִשַׁי° called°°° ´Ávînäđäv אֲבִינָדָב,° and made him pass°° before° Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל.° And he said,°° Neither°° hath Yähwè יָהוֶה° chosen°° this.°

 16:8 Then Yishay called Avinadav, and made him pass before Shemuel. And he said, Neither hath Yahweh chosen this.

 16:9 Then Yišay יִשַׁי° made Šammà שַׁמָּה° to pass by.°° And he said,°° Neither°° hath Yähwè יָהוֶה° chosen°° this.°

 16:10 Again, Yišay יִשַׁי° made seven° of his sons° to pass°° before° Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל.° And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° said°° unto° Yišay יִשַׁי,° Yähwè יָהוֶה° hath not° chosen°° these.°

 16:10 Again, Yishay made seven of his sons to pass before Shemuel. And Shemuel said unto Yishay, Yahweh hath not chosen these.

 16:11 And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° said°° unto° Yišay יִשַׁי,° Are here all°° [thy] children?° And he said,°° There remaineth°° yet° the youngest,° and, behold,° he keepeth°° the sheep.° And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° said°° unto° Yišay יִשַׁי,° Send°° and fetch°° him: for° we will not° sit down°° till° he come°° hither.°

 16:11 And Shemuel said unto Yishay, Are here all [thy] children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Shemuel said unto Yishay, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.

 16:12 And he sent,°° and brought° him in.°° Now he° [was] ruddy,° [and] withal° of a beautiful° countenance,° and goodly° to look to.° And Yähwè יָהוֶה° said,°° Arise,°° anoint°° him: for° this° [is] he.°

 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he [was] ruddy, [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And Yahweh said, Arise, anoint him: for this [is] he.

 16:13 Then Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° took°°° the horn° of oil,° and anointed°° him in the midst° of his brethren:° and the Spirit° of Yähwè יָהוֶה° came°° upon° Däwiđ דָּוִד° from that day°°° forward.° So Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל° rose up,°° and went°°° to Rämà רָמָה.°

 16:13 Then Shemuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of Yahweh came upon Dawid from that day forward. So Shemuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

 16:14 ¶ But the Spirit° of Yähwè יָהוֶה° departed°° from°° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° and an evil° spirit° from°° Yähwè יָהוֶה° troubled°° him.

 16:14 ¶ But the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Shaul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him.

 16:15 And Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּל° servants° said°° unto° him, Behold° now,° an evil° spirit° from ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° troubleth°° thee.

 16:15 And Shaul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from Elohim troubleth thee.

 16:16 Let our ´áđôn אֲדוֹן° now° command°° thy servants,° [which are] before° thee, to seek out°° a man,° [who is] a cunning°° player°° on an harp:° and it shall come to pass,° when° the evil° spirit° from ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° is upon° thee, that he shall play°° with his hand,° and thou shalt be well.°°

 16:16 Let our adon now command thy servants, [which are] before thee, to seek out a man, [who is] a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from Elohim is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

 16:17 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° said°° unto° his servants,° Provide°° me now° a man° that can play°° well,°° and bring°° [him] to° me.

 16:17 And Shaul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring [him] to me.

 16:18 Then answered°° one° of the servants,° and said,°° Behold,° I have seen°° a son° of Yišay יִשַׁי° the Bêŧ Laçmî בֵּית־לַחמִי,° [that is] cunning°° in playing,°° and a mighty° valiant man,° and a man° of war,° and prudent°° in matters,° and a comely° person,° and Yähwè יָהוֶה° [is] with° him.

 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Yishay the Beth-Lachmi, [that is] cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and Yahweh [is] with him.

 16:19 ¶ Wherefore Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° sent°° messengers° unto° Yišay יִשַׁי,° and said,°° Send°° me° Däwiđ דָּוִד° thy son,° which° [is] with the sheep.°

 16:19 ¶ Wherefore Shaul sent messengers unto Yishay, and said, Send me Dawid thy son, which [is] with the sheep.

 16:20 And Yišay יִשַׁי° took°° an ass° [laden] with bread,° and a bottle° of wine,° and a° kid,°° and sent°° [them] by° Däwiđ דָּוִד° his son° unto° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל.°

 16:20 And Yishay took an ass [laden] with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent [them] by Dawid his son unto Shaul.

 16:21 And Däwiđ דָּוִד° came°° to° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° and stood°° before° him: and he loved°° him greatly;° and he became° his armourbearer.°°°

 16:21 And Dawid came to Shaul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.

 16:22 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° sent°° to° Yišay יִשַׁי,° saying,°° Let Däwiđ דָּוִד,° I pray thee,° stand°° before° me; for° he hath found°° favour° in my sight.°

 16:22 And Shaul sent to Yishay, saying, Let Dawid, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.

 16:23 And it came to pass,° when° the [evil] spirit° from ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים° was upon° Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,° that Däwiđ דָּוִד° took°°° an harp,° and played°° with his hand:° so Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל° was refreshed,°° and was well,°° and the evil° spirit° departed°° from°° him.

 16:23 And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit from Elohim was upon Shaul, that Dawid took an harp, and played with his hand: so Shaul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
