 1:1 ¶
Now there wasº
a certainº
manº
ofº
Rämä±ayim Xôfîm
רָמָתַיִם־צוֹפִים,º
of mountºº
´Efrayim
אֶפרַיִם,º
and his nameº
[was]
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָה,º
the sonº
of
Yæröçäm
יְרֹחָם,º
the sonº
of
´Élîhû´
אֱלִיהוּא,º
the sonº
of
Töçû

the sonº
of

צוּף,º
an
´Efrä±î
אֶפרָתִי:ºº |
|
 1:1 ¶
Now there was a certain man of Ramathayim-Tzofim, of mount Efrayim, and his name [was] Elqanah, the son of Yerocham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tochu, the son of Tzuf, an Efrathi: |
 1:2
And he had twoº
wives;º
the nameº
of the oneº
[was]
Çannà
חַנָּה,º
and the nameº
of the otherº
Pæninnà
פְּנִנָּה:º
and
Pæninnà
פְּנִנָּהº
hadº
children,º
but
Çannà
חַנָּהº
had noº
children.º |
|
 1:2
And he had two wives; the name of the one [was] Channah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Channah had no children. |
 1:3
And thisº
manº
went upºº
out of his cityºº
yearlyºº
to worshipºº
and to sacrificeºº
unto
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
Xævä´ô±
צְבָאוֹתº
in
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה.º
And the twoº
sonsº
of
`Ëlî
עֵלִי,º
Çofnî
חָפנִיº
and
Pînçäs
פִּינחָס,º
the priestsº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
[were] there.º |
|
 1:3
And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto Yahweh Tzevaoth in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Chofni and Pinchas, the priests of Yahweh, [were] there. |
 1:4 ¶
And when the timeº
wasº
that
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָהº
offered,ºº
he gaveºº
to
Pæninnà
פְּנִנָּהº
his wife,º
and to allº
her sonsº
and her daughters,º
portions:º |
|
 1:4 ¶
And when the time was that Elqanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: |
 1:5
But unto
Çannà
חַנָּהº
he gaveºº
aº
worthyº
portion;º
forº
he lovedººº
Çannà
חַנָּה:º
but
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
had shut upºº
her womb.º |
|
 1:5
But unto Channah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Channah: but Yahweh had shut up her womb. |
 1:6
And her adversaryº
alsoº
provokedºº
her sore,º
for toº
make her fret,ºº
becauseº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
had shutºº
upºº
her womb.º |
|
 1:6
And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb. |
 1:7
And [as] he didºº
soº
yearº
by year,º
whenºº
she went upºº
to the houseºº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
soº
she provokedºº
her; therefore she wept,ºº
and did notº
eat.ºº |
|
 1:7
And [as] he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. |
 1:8
Then saidºº
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָהº
her husbandº
to her,
Çannà
חַנָּה,º
whyº
weepestºº
thou? and whyº
eatestºº
thou not?º
and whyº
is thy heartº
grieved?ººº
[am] notº
Iº
betterº
to thee than tenºº
sons?º |
|
 1:8
Then said Elqanah her husband to her, Channah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? [am] not I better to thee than ten sons? |
 1:9 ¶
So
Çannà
חַנָּהº
rose upºº
afterº
they had eatenºº
in
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה,º
and afterº
they had drunk.ºº
Now
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
the priestº
satºº
uponº
a seatº
byº
a postº
of the templeº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה.º |
|
 1:9 ¶
So Channah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of Yahweh. |
 1:10
And sheº
[was] in bitternessº
of soul,º
and prayedºº
untoº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
and weptºº
sore.ºº |
|
 1:10
And she [was] in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto Yahweh, and wept sore. |
 1:11
And she vowedºº
a vow,º
and said,ºº
O
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
Xævä´ô±
צְבָאוֹת,º
ifº
thou wilt indeedºº
lookºº
on the afflictionº
of thine handmaid,º
and rememberºº
me, and notº
forgetººº
thine handmaid,º
but wilt giveºº
unto thine handmaidº
a manºº
child,º
then I will giveºº
him unto
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
allº
the daysº
of his life,º
and there shall noº
razorº
comeºº
uponº
his head.º |
|
 1:11
And she vowed a vow, and said, O Yahweh Tzevaoth, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto Yahweh all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. |
 1:12
And it came to pass,º
asº
she continuedºº
prayingºº
beforeº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
that
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
markedººº
her mouth.º |
|
 1:12
And it came to pass, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli marked her mouth. |
 1:13
Now
Çannà
חַנָּה,º
sheº
spakeºº
inº
her heart;º
onlyº
her lipsº
moved,ºº
but her voiceº
was notº
heard:ºº
therefore
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
thoughtºº
she had been drunken.º |
|
 1:13
Now Channah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. |
 1:14
And
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
saidºº
untoº
her, Howº
longº
wilt thou be drunken?ºº
put awayººº
thy wineº
fromºº
thee. |
|
 1:14
And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. |
 1:15
And
Çannà
חַנָּהº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
No,º
my
´áðôn
אֲדוֹן,º
I [am] a womanº
of a sorrowfulº
spirit:º
Iº
have drunkºº
neitherº
wineº
nor strong drink,º
but have poured outººº
my soulº
beforeº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה.º |
|
 1:15
And Channah answered and said, No, my adon, I [am] a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before Yahweh. |
 1:16
Countºº
notºº
thine handmaidº
forº
a daughterº
of
Bæliyya`al
בְּלִיַּעַל:ºº
forº
out of the abundanceºº
of my complaintº
and griefº
have I spokenºº
hitherto.ºº |
|
 1:16
Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Beliyyaal: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. |
 1:17
Then
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Goººº
in peace:º
and the
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
grantºº
[thee]º
thy petitionº
thatº
thou hast askedºº
ofºº
him. |
|
 1:17
Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the Elohim of Yisrael grant [thee] thy petition that thou hast asked of him. |
 1:18
And she said,ºº
Let thine handmaidº
findºº
graceº
in thy sight.º
So the womanº
wentººº
her way,º
and did eat,ºº
and her countenanceº
wasº
noº
moreº
[sad]. |
|
 1:18
And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more [sad]. |
 1:19 ¶
And they rose upºº
in the morningº
early,ººº
and worshippedºº
beforeº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
and returned,ºº
and cameºº
toº
their houseº
to
Rämà
רָמָה:º
and
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָהº
knewººº
Çannà
חַנָּהº
his wife;º
and
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
rememberedºº
her. |
|
 1:19 ¶
And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elqanah knew Channah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her. |
 1:20
Wherefore it came to pass,º
when the timeº
was comeº
about after
Çannà
חַנָּהº
had conceived,ºº
that she bareºº
a son,º
and calledººº
his nameº
Šæmû´ël
שְׁמוּאֵל,º
[saying], Becauseº
I have askedºº
him of
Yähwè
יָהוֶה.ºº |
|
 1:20
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Channah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Shemuel, [saying], Because I have asked him of Yahweh. |
 1:21
And the manº
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָה,º
and allº
his house,º
went upºº
to offerºº
unto
Yähwè
יָהוֶהºº
the yearlyº
sacrifice,º
and his vow.º |
|
 1:21
And the man Elqanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. |
 1:22
But
Çannà
חַנָּהº
went not up;ººº
forº
she saidºº
unto her husband,º
[I will not go up] untilº
the childº
be weaned,ºº
and [then] I will bringºº
him, that he may appearººº
beforeº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה,º
and thereº
abideºº
forº
ever.ºº |
|
 1:22
But Channah went not up; for she said unto her husband, [I will not go up] until the child be weaned, and [then] I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and there abide for ever. |
 1:23
And
´Elkänà
אֶלקָנָהº
her husbandº
saidºº
unto her, Doºº
what seemethº
thee good;º
tarryºº
untilº
thou have weanedºº
him; onlyº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
establishººº
his word.º
So the womanº
abode,ºº
and gave her sonº
suckºººº
untilº
she weanedºº
him. |
|
 1:23
And Elqanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only Yahweh establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him. |
 1:24 ¶
And whenº
she had weanedºº
him, she took him upºº
withº
her, with threeº
bullocks,º
and oneº
ephahº
of flour,º
and a bottleº
of wine,º
and broughtºº
him unto the houseº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
in
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה:º
and the childº
[was] young.º |
|
 1:24 ¶
And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of Yahweh in Shiloh: and the child [was] young. |
 1:25
And they slewººº
a bullock,º
and broughtººº
the childº
toº
`Ëlî
עֵלִי.º |
|
 1:25
And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. |
 1:26
And she said,ºº
Ohº
my
´áðôn
אֲדוֹן,º
[as] thy soulº
liveth,º
my
´áðôn
אֲדוֹן,º
Iº
[am] the womanº
that stoodºº
byº
thee here,º
prayingºº
untoº
Yähwè
יָהוֶה.º |
|
 1:26
And she said, Oh my adon, [as] thy soul liveth, my adon, I [am] the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto Yahweh. |
 1:27
Forº
thisº
childº
I prayed;ºº
and
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
hath givenºº
meº
my petitionº
whichº
I askedºº
ofºº
him: |
|
 1:27
For this child I prayed; and Yahweh hath given me my petition which I asked of him: |
 1:28
Therefore alsoº
Iº
have lentºº
him to
Yähwè
יָהוֶה;º
as longº
asº
he livethº
heº
shall beº
lentºº
to
Yähwè
יָהוֶה.º
And he worshippedºº
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
there.º |
|
 1:28
Therefore also I have lent him to Yahweh; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to Yahweh. And he worshipped Yahweh there. |
