 20:1 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº fledºº from Näyô± נָיוֹתºº in Rämà רָמָה,º and cameºº and saidºº beforeº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן,º Whatº have I done?ºº whatº [is] mine iniquity?º and whatº [is] my sinº beforeº thy father,º thatº he seekethººº my life?º

 20:1 ¶ And Dawid fled from Nayoth in Ramah, and came and said before Yehonathan, What have I done? what [is] mine iniquity? and what [is] my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?

 20:2 And he saidºº unto him, God forbid;º thou shalt notº die:ºº behold,º my fatherº will doºººº nothingºº either greatº orº small,º but that he will shewºººº itº me:º and whyº should my fatherº hideººº thisº thingº fromº me? itº [is] notº [so].

 20:2 And he said unto him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it [is] not [so].

 20:3 And Däwið דָּוִדº swareºº moreover,º and said,ºº Thy fatherº certainlyºº knowethºº thatº I have foundºº graceº in thine eyes;º and he saith,ºº Let notº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº knowºº this,º lestº he be grieved:ºº but trulyº [as] Yähwè יָהוֶהº liveth,º and [as] thy soulº liveth,º [thereº is] but a stepº betweenº me and death.º

 20:3 And Dawid sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Yehonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly [as] Yahweh liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, [there is] but a step between me and death.

 20:4 Then saidºº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Whatsoeverº thy soulº desireth,ºº I will even doºº [it] for thee.

 20:4 Then said Yehonathan unto Dawid, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do [it] for thee.

 20:5 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº untoº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן,º Behold,º to morrowº [is] the new moon,º and Iº should not failºº to sitºº withº the kingº at meat:ºº but let me go,ºº that I may hideºº myselfº in the fieldº untoº the thirdº [day] at even.º

 20:5 And Dawid said unto Yehonathan, Behold, to morrow [is] the new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third [day] at even.

 20:6 Ifº thy fatherº at allºº missºº me, then say,ºº Däwið דָּוִדº earnestlyºº askedºº [leave] ofº me that he might runºº to Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶםº his city:º forº [there is] a yearlyº sacrificeº thereº for allº the family.º

 20:6 If thy father at all miss me, then say, Dawid earnestly asked [leave] of me that he might run to Beth-Lachem his city: for [there is] a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.

 20:7 Ifº he sayºº thus,º [It is] well;º thy servantº shall have peace:º but ifº he be veryºº wroth,ºº [then] be sureºº thatº evilº is determinedºº byºº him.

 20:7 If he say thus, [It is] well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very wroth, [then] be sure that evil is determined by him.

 20:8 Therefore thou shalt dealºº kindlyº withº thy servant;º forº thou hast broughtººº thy servantº into a covenantº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº withº thee: notwithstanding, ifº there beº in me iniquity,º slayºº me thyself;º forº whyº shouldest thou bringºº me to thy father?º

 20:8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of Yahweh with thee: notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father?

 20:9 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº said,ºº Far be itº from thee:º forº ifº I knewºº certainlyºº thatº evilº were determinedºº byºº my fatherº to comeºº uponº thee, then would notº I tellºº it thee?

 20:9 And Yehonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?

 20:10 Then saidºº Däwið דָּוִדº toº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן,º Whoº shall tellºº me? orº whatº [if] thy fatherº answerºº thee roughly?º

 20:10 Then said Dawid to Yehonathan, Who shall tell me? or what [if] thy father answer thee roughly?

 20:11 ¶ And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Come,ººº and let us go outºº into the field.º And they went outºº bothº of them into the field.º

 20:11 ¶ And Yehonathan said unto Dawid, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.

 20:12 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º O Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º whenº I have soundedººº my fatherº about to morrowº any time,º [or] the thirdº [day], and, behold,º [if there be] goodººº towardº Däwið דָּוִד,º and I thenº sendºº notº untoº thee, and shewººº it thee;ººº

 20:12 And Yehonathan said unto Dawid, O Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael, when I have sounded my father about to morrow any time, [or] the third [day], and, behold, [if there be] good toward Dawid, and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee;

 20:13 Yähwè יָהוֶהº doºº soº and muchº moreºº to Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן:º but ifº it pleaseººº my fatherº [to do] theeº evil,º then I will shewººº it thee,ººº and send thee away,ºº that thou mayest goºº in peace:º and Yähwè יָהוֶהº beº withº thee, asº he hath beenº withº my father.º

 20:13 Yahweh do so and much more to Yehonathan: but if it please my father [to do] thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and Yahweh be with thee, as he hath been with my father.

 20:14 And thou shalt notº only whileº yetºº I liveº shewººº me the kindnessº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º that I dieºº not:º

 20:14 And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of Yahweh, that I die not:

 20:15 But [also] thou shalt notº cut offººº thy kindnessº fromºº my houseº forº ever:ºº no, notº when Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath cut offººº the enemiesºº of Däwið דָּוִדº every oneº from the faceººº of the earth.º

 20:15 But [also] thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when Yahweh hath cut off the enemies of Dawid every one from the face of the earth.

 20:16 So Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº madeºº [a covenant] withº the houseº of Däwið דָּוִד,º [saying], Let Yähwè יָהוֶהº even requireºº [it] at the handºº of Däwið's דָּוִדº enemies.ºº

 20:16 So Yehonathan made [a covenant] with the house of Dawid, [saying], Let Yahweh even require [it] at the hand of Dawid's enemies.

 20:17 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº causedº Däwið דָּוִדº to swearºº again,ºº because he lovedº him: forº he lovedºº him as he lovedº his own soul.º

 20:17 And Yehonathan caused Dawid to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.

 20:18 Then Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº saidºº to Däwið דָּוִד,º To morrowº [is] the new moon:º and thou shalt be missed,ºº becauseº thy seatº will be empty.ºº

 20:18 Then Yehonathan said to Dawid, To morrow [is] the new moon: and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.

 20:19 And [when] thou hast stayed three days,ºº [then] thou shalt go downºº quickly,º and comeºº toº the placeº whereº thou didst hideºº thyselfº whenºº the businessº was [in hand], and shalt remainºº byº the stoneº ´Ezel אֶזֶל.º

 20:19 And [when] thou hast stayed three days, [then] thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was [in hand], and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.

 20:20 And Iº will shootºº threeº arrowsº on the sideº [thereof], as though I shotºº at a mark.º

 20:20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side [thereof], as though I shot at a mark.

 20:21 And, behold,º I will sendººº a lad,º [saying], Go,ººº find outººº the arrows.º Ifº I expresslyºº sayºº unto the lad,º Behold,º the arrowsº [are] on this sideºº of thee, takeºº them; then comeºº thou: forº [there is] peaceº to thee, and noº hurt;º [as] Yähwè יָהוֶהº liveth.º

 20:21 And, behold, I will send a lad, [saying], Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, Behold, the arrows [are] on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for [there is] peace to thee, and no hurt; [as] Yahweh liveth.

 20:22 But ifº I sayºº thusº unto the young man,º Behold,º the arrowsº [are] beyondºº thee; go thy way:ººº forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath sent thee away.ºº

 20:22 But if I say thus unto the young man, Behold, the arrows [are] beyond thee; go thy way: for Yahweh hath sent thee away.

 20:23 And [as touching] the matterº whichº thouº and Iº have spokenºº of, behold,º Yähwè יָהוֶהº [be] betweenº thee and me forº ever.ºº

 20:23 And [as touching] the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, Yahweh [be] between thee and me for ever.

 20:24 ¶ So Däwið דָּוִדº hidºº himselfº in the field:º and when the new moonº was come,º the kingº sat him downºº to eatºº meat.º

 20:24 ¶ So Dawid hid himself in the field: and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down to eat meat.

 20:25 And the kingº satºº uponº his seat,º as at other times,º [even] uponº a seatº by the wall:º and Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº arose,ºº and ´Avnër אַבנֵרº satºº by Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּלº side,ºº and Däwið's דָּוִדº placeº was empty.ºº

 20:25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, [even] upon a seat by the wall: and Yehonathan arose, and Avner sat by Shaul's side, and Dawid's place was empty.

 20:26 Nevertheless Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº spakeºº notº any thingº thatº day:º forº he thought,ºº Something hath befallenº him, heº [is] notº clean;º surelyº he [is] notº clean.º

 20:26 Nevertheless Shaul spake not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he [is] not clean; surely he [is] not clean.

 20:27 And it came to passº on the morrow,ºº [which was] the secondº [day] of the month,º that Däwið's דָּוִדº placeº was empty:ºº and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº untoº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº his son,º Whereforeº comethºº notº the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁיº toº meat,º neitherº yesterday,º norº to day?º

 20:27 And it came to pass on the morrow, [which was] the second [day] of the month, that Dawid's place was empty: and Shaul said unto Yehonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of Yishay to meat, neither yesterday, nor to day?

 20:28 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº answeredººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º Däwið דָּוִדº earnestlyºº askedºº [leave] ofºº meº [to go] toº Bê± Läçem בֵּית־לָחֶם:º

 20:28 And Yehonathan answered Shaul, Dawid earnestly asked [leave] of me [to go] to Beth-Lachem:

 20:29 And he said,ºº Let me go,ºº I pray thee;º forº our familyº hath a sacrificeº in the city;º and my brother,º heº hath commandedºº me [to be there]: and now,º ifº I have foundºº favourº in thine eyes,º let me get away,ºº I pray thee,º and seeººº my brethren.º Thereforeºº he comethºº notº untoº the king'sº table.º

 20:29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me [to be there]: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king's table.

 20:30 Then Šä´ûl's שָׁאוּלº angerº was kindledºº against Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָן,º and he saidºº unto him, Thou sonº of the perverseºº rebelliousº [woman], do notº I knowºº thatº thouº hast chosenºº the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁיº to thine own confusion,º and unto the confusionº of thy mother'sº nakedness?º

 20:30 Then Shaul's anger was kindled against Yehonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious [woman], do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Yishay to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?

 20:31 Forº as longºº asºº the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁיº livethººº uponº the ground,º thouº shalt notº be established,ºº nor thy kingdom.º Wherefore nowº sendºº and fetchººº him untoº me, forº heº shall surely die.ºº

 20:31 For as long as the son of Yishay liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.

 20:32 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº answeredººº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº his father,º and saidºº untoº him, Whereforeº shall he be slain?ºº whatº hath he done?ºº

 20:32 And Yehonathan answered Shaul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done?

 20:33 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº castººº a javelinº atº him to smiteºº him: whereby Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº knewºº thatº itº was determinedºº ofºº his fatherº to slayººº Däwið דָּוִד.º

 20:33 And Shaul cast a javelin at him to smite him: whereby Yehonathan knew that it was determined of his father to slay Dawid.

 20:34 So Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº aroseºº fromºº the tableº in fierceº anger,º and did eatºº noº meatº the secondº dayº of the month:º forº he was grievedºº forº Däwið דָּוִד,º becauseº his fatherº had done him shame.ºº

 20:34 So Yehonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the second day of the month: for he was grieved for Dawid, because his father had done him shame.

 20:35 ¶ And it came to passº in the morning,º that Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº went outºº into the fieldº at the time appointedº with Däwið דָּוִד,º and a littleº ladº withº him.

 20:35 ¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that Yehonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with Dawid, and a little lad with him.

 20:36 And he saidºº unto his lad,º Run,ºº find outºº nowºº the arrowsº whichº Iº shoot.ºº [And] as the ladº ran,ºº heº shotºº an arrowº beyondºº him.

 20:36 And he said unto his lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. [And] as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

 20:37 And when the ladº was comeºº toº the placeº of the arrowº whichº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº had shot,ºº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº criedºº afterº the lad,º and said,ºº [Is] notº the arrowº beyondºº thee?

 20:37 And when the lad was come to the place of the arrow which Yehonathan had shot, Yehonathan cried after the lad, and said, [Is] not the arrow beyond thee?

 20:38 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº criedºº afterº the lad,º Make speed,ºº haste,ººº stayºº not.º And Yæhônä±än's יְהוֹנָתָןº ladº gathered upººº the arrows,ººº and cameºº toº his ´áðôn אֲדוֹן.º

 20:38 And Yehonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Yehonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his adon.

 20:39 But the ladº knewºº notº any thing:º onlyº Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº and Däwið דָּוִדº knewººº the matter.º

 20:39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Yehonathan and Dawid knew the matter.

 20:40 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº gaveººº his artilleryº untoº hisº lad,º and saidºº unto him, Go,ººº carryºº [them] to the city.º

 20:40 And Yehonathan gave his artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry [them] to the city.

 20:41 ¶ [And] as soon as the ladº was gone,ºº Däwið דָּוִדº aroseºº out of [a place] towardºº the south,º and fellºº on his faceº to the ground,º and bowedºº himselfº threeº times:º and they kissedºº oneºº another,º and weptºº oneº withº another,º untilº Däwið דָּוִדº exceeded.ºº

 20:41 ¶ [And] as soon as the lad was gone, Dawid arose out of [a place] toward the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until Dawid exceeded.

 20:42 And Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº saidºº to Däwið דָּוִד,º Goººº in peace,º forasmuch asº we have swornºº bothº of usº in the nameº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º saying,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº beº betweenº me and thee, and betweenº my seedº and thy seedº forº ever.ºº And he aroseºº and departed:ººº and Yæhônä±än יְהוֹנָתָןº wentºº into the city.º

 20:42 And Yehonathan said to Dawid, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of Yahweh, saying, Yahweh be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Yehonathan went into the city.
