 2:1 ¶ And Çannà חַנָּהº prayed,ºº and said,ºº My heartº rejoicethºº in Yähwè יָהוֶה,º mine hornº is exaltedºº in Yähwè יָהוֶה:º my mouthº is enlargedºº overº mine enemies;ºº becauseº I rejoiceºº in thy salvation.º

 2:1 ¶ And Channah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in Yahweh, mine horn is exalted in Yahweh: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.

 2:2 [There is] noneº holyº as Yähwè יָהוֶה:º forº [there is] noneº besideº thee: neitherº [is there] any rockº like our ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 2:2 [There is] none holy as Yahweh: for [there is] none beside thee: neither [is there] any rock like our Elohim.

 2:3 Talkºº noº moreºº so exceedingº proudly;º let [not] arrogancyº comeºº outº of your mouth:ºº forº Yähwè יָהוֶהº [is] an ´Ël אֵלº of knowledge,º and by him actionsº are weighed.ºº

 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let [not] arrogancy come out of your mouth: for Yahweh [is] an El of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

 2:4 The bowsº of the mighty menº [are] broken,º and they that stumbledºº are girdedºº with strength.º

 2:4 The bows of the mighty men [are] broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

 2:5 [They that were] fullº have hired outºº themselvesº for bread;º and [they that were] hungryº ceased:ºº so thatº the barrenº hath bornºº seven;º and she that hath manyº childrenº is waxed feeble.ºº

 2:5 [They that were] full have hired out themselves for bread; and [they that were] hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

 2:6 Yähwè יָהוֶהº killeth,ºº and maketh alive:ºº he bringeth downºº to the grave,º and bringeth up.ºº

 2:8 He raiseth upºº the poorº out of the dust,ºº [and] lifteth upºº the beggarº from the dunghill,ºº to setºº [them] amongº princes,º and to make them inheritºº the throneº of glory:º forº the pillarsº of the earthº [are] Yähwè's יָהוֶה,º and he hath setºº the worldº uponº them.

 2:8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, [and] lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set [them] among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth [are] Yahweh's, and he hath set the world upon them.

 2:9 He will keepºº the feetº of his saints,º and the wickedº shall be silentºº in darkness;º forº by strengthº shall noº manº prevail.ºº

 2:9 He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

 2:10 The adversariesºº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº shall be broken to pieces;ºº out of heavenº shall he thunderºº uponº them: Yähwè יָהוֶהº shall judgeºº the endsº of the earth;º and he shall giveºº strengthº unto his king,º and exaltºº the hornº of his anointed.º

 2:10 The adversaries of Yahweh shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: Yahweh shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

 2:11 And ´Elkänà אֶלקָנָהº wentººº to Rämà רָמָהº toº his house.º And the childº didºº ministerºº untoº Yähwè יָהוֶהºº beforeº `Ëlî עֵלִיº the priest.º

 2:11 And Elqanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto Yahweh before Eli the priest.

 2:12 ¶ Now the sonsº of `Ëlî עֵלִיº [were] sonsº of Bæliyya`al בְּלִיַּעַל;º they knewºº notºº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 2:12 ¶ Now the sons of Eli [were] sons of Beliyyaal; they knew not Yahweh.

 2:13 And the priests'º customº withº the peopleº [was, that], when anyº manº offeredºº sacrifice,º the priest'sº servantº came,ºº while the fleshº was in seething,ºº with a fleshhookº of threeº teethº in his hand;º

 2:13 And the priests' custom with the people [was, that], when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

 2:14 And he struckºº [it] into the pan,º orº kettle,º orº caldron,º orº pot;º allº thatº the fleshhookº brought upºº the priestº tookºº for himself. Soº they didºº in Šîlò שִׁילֹהº unto allº the Yi$ræ´ëlîm יִשׂרְאֵלִיםº that cameºº thither.º

 2:14 And he struck [it] into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Yisreelim that came thither.

 2:15 Alsoº beforeº they burntººº the fat,º the priest'sº servantº came,ºº and saidºº to the manº that sacrificed,ºº Giveºº fleshº to roastºº for the priest;º for he will notº haveºº soddenºº fleshºº ofº thee, butºº raw.º

 2:15 Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

 2:16 And [if] any manº saidºº untoº him, Let them not failºº to burnºº the fatº presently,º and [then] takeºº [as much] asº thy soulº desireth;ºº then he would answerºº him, [Nay]; butº thou shalt giveºº [it me] now:º and ifº not,º I will takeºº [it] by force.º

 2:16 And [if] any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and [then] take [as much] as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, [Nay]; but thou shalt give [it me] now: and if not, I will take [it] by force.

 2:17 Wherefore the sinº of the young menº wasº veryº greatºº beforeº Yähwè יָהוֶה:º forº menºº abhorredººº the offeringº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 2:17 Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh: for men abhorred the offering of Yahweh.

 2:18 ¶ But Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº ministeredººº beforeº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º [being] a child,º girdedºº with a linenº ephod.º

 2:18 ¶ But Shemuel ministered before Yahweh, [being] a child, girded with a linen ephod.

 2:19 Moreover his motherº madeºº him a littleº coat,º and broughtºº [it] to him from yearº to year,ºº when she came upºº withº her husbandº to offerººº the yearlyº sacrifice.º

 2:19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought [it] to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

 2:20 ¶ And `Ëlî עֵלִיº blessedººº ´Elkänà אֶלקָנָהº and his wife,º and said,ºº Yähwè יָהוֶהº giveºº thee seedº ofº thisº womanº forº the loanº whichº is lentºº to Yähwè יָהוֶה.º And they wentºº unto their own home.º

 2:20 ¶ And Eli blessed Elqanah and his wife, and said, Yahweh give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to Yahweh. And they went unto their own home.

 2:21 Andº Yähwè יָהוֶהº visitedººº Çannà חַנָּה,º so that she conceived,ºº and bareºº threeº sonsº and twoº daughters.º And the childº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº grewºº beforeº Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 2:21 And Yahweh visited Channah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Shemuel grew before Yahweh.

 2:22 ¶ Now `Ëlî עֵלִיº was veryº old,ºº and heardººº allº thatº his sonsº didºº unto allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל;º and howº they layºº withº the womenº that assembledºº [at] the doorº of the tabernacleº of the congregation.º

 2:22 ¶ Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Yisrael; and how they lay with the women that assembled [at] the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

 2:23 And he saidºº unto them, Whyº doºº ye suchº things?º forº Iº hearºº ofº your evilº dealingsº byºº allº thisº people.º

 2:23 And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

 2:24 Nay,º my sons;º forº [it is] noº goodº reportº thatº Iº hear:ºº ye make Yähwè's יָהוֶהº peopleº to transgress.ºº

 2:24 Nay, my sons; for [it is] no good report that I hear: ye make Yahweh's people to transgress.

 2:25 Ifº one manº sinºº against another,º the ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº shall judgeºº him: but ifº a manº sinºº against Yähwè יָהוֶה,º whoº shall intreatºº for him? Notwithstandingº they hearkenedºº not unto the voiceº of their father,º becauseº Yähwè יָהוֶהº wouldºº slayºº them.

 2:25 If one man sin against another, the elohim shall judge him: but if a man sin against Yahweh, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because Yahweh would slay them.

 2:26 And the childº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº grewºº on,ººº and was in favourº bothº withº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º and alsoº withº men.ºº

 2:26 And the child Shemuel grew on, and was in favour both with Yahweh, and also with men.

 2:27 ¶ And there cameºº a manº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº untoº `Ëlî עֵלִי,º and saidºº untoº him, Thusº saithºº Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Did I plainlyºº appearºº untoº the houseº of thy father,º when they wereº in Mixrayim מִצרַיִםº in Par`ò's פַּרעֹהº house?º

 2:27 ¶ And there came a man of Elohim unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith Yahweh, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Mitzrayim in Paroh's house?

 2:28 And did I chooseºº him out of allºº the tribesº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº [to be] my priest,º to offerºº uponº mine altar,º to burnºº incense,º to wearºº an ephodº beforeº me? and did I giveºº unto the houseº of thy fatherºº allº the offerings made by fireº of the childrenº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל?º

 2:28 And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Yisrael [to be] my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Yisrael?

 2:29 Whereforeº kickºº ye at my sacrificeº and at mine offering,º whichº I have commandedºº [in my] habitation;º and honourestººº thy sonsº aboveº me, to make yourselves fatºº with the chiefestºº of allº the offeringsº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº my people?º

 2:29 Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded [in my] habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Yisrael my people?

 2:30 Whereforeº Yähwè יָהוֶהº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº saith,ºº I saidºº indeedºº [that] thy house,º and the houseº of thy father,º should walkºº beforeº me forº ever:ºº but nowº Yähwè יָהוֶהº saith,ºº Be it farº from me;º forº them that honourºº me I will honour,ºº and they that despiseºº me shall be lightly esteemed.ºº

 2:30 Wherefore Yahweh Elohim of Yisrael saith, I said indeed [that] thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now Yahweh saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

 2:31 Behold,º the daysº come,ºº that I will cut offººº thine arm,º and the armº of thy father'sº house,º that there shall not beºº an old manº in thine house.º

 2:31 Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.

 2:32 And thou shalt seeºº an enemyº [in my] habitation,º in allº [the wealth] whichº [´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים] shall giveººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל:º and there shall notº beº an old manº in thine houseº for ever.ºº

 2:32 And thou shalt see an enemy [in my] habitation, in all [the wealth] which [Elohim] shall give Yisrael: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

 2:33 And the manº of thine, [whom] I shall notº cut offºº fromºº mine altar,º [shall be] to consumeººº thine eyes,º and to grieveºº thine heart:º and allº the increaseº of thine houseº shall dieºº in the flower of their age.ºº

 2:33 And the man of thine, [whom] I shall not cut off from mine altar, [shall be] to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.

 2:34 And thisº [shall be] a signº unto thee, thatº shall comeºº uponº thy twoº sons,º onº Çofnî חָפנִיº and Pînçäs פִּינחָס;º in oneº dayº they shall dieºº bothº of them.

 2:34 And this [shall be] a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Chofni and Pinchas; in one day they shall die both of them.

 2:35 And I will raise me upºº a faithfulºº priest,º [that] shall doºº according to [that] whichº [is] in mine heartº and in my mind:º and I will buildºº him a sureºº house;º and he shall walkºº beforeº mine anointedº for ever.ºº

 2:35 And I will raise me up a faithful priest, [that] shall do according to [that] which [is] in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

 2:36 And it shall come to pass,º [that] every oneº that is leftºº in thine houseº shall comeºº [and] crouchºº to him for a pieceº of silverº and a morselº of bread,º and shall say,ºº Putºº me, I pray thee,º intoº oneº of the priests' offices,º that I may eatºº a pieceº of bread.º

 2:36 And it shall come to pass, [that] every one that is left in thine house shall come [and] crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
