 22:1 ¶ Däwið דָּוִדº therefore departedººº thence,ºº and escapedºº toº the caveº `Áðulläm עֲדֻלָּם:º and when his brethrenº and allº his father'sº houseº heardºº [it], they went downºº thitherº toº him.

 22:1 ¶ Dawid therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard [it], they went down thither to him.

 22:2 And everyº oneº [that was] in distress,º and everyº oneº thatº [was] in debt,ºº and everyº oneº [that was] discontented,ºº gatheredºº themselvesº untoº him; and he becameº a captainº overº them: and there wereº withº him about fourº hundredº men.º

 22:2 And every one [that was] in distress, and every one that [was] in debt, and every one [that was] discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.

 22:3 ¶ And Däwið דָּוִדº wentººº thenceºº to Mixpà מִצפָּהº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב:º and he saidºº untoº the kingº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב,º Let my fatherº and my mother,º I pray thee,º come forth,ºº [and be] withº you, tillºº I knowºº whatº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº will doºº for me.

 22:3 ¶ And Dawid went thence to Mitzpah of Moav: and he said unto the king of Moav, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, [and be] with you, till I know what Elohim will do for me.

 22:4 And he broughtºº themº beforeº the kingº of Mô´äv מוֹאָב:º and they dweltºº withº him allº the whileº that Däwið דָּוִדº wasº in the hold.º

 22:4 And he brought them before the king of Moav: and they dwelt with him all the while that Dawid was in the hold.

 22:5 ¶ And the prophetº Gäð גָּדº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Abideºº notº in the hold;º depart,ººº and getºº thee into the landº of Yæhûðà יְהוּדָה.º Then Däwið דָּוִדº departed,ººº and cameºº into the forestº of Çäre± חָרֶת.º

 22:5 ¶ And the prophet Gad said unto Dawid, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Yehudah. Then Dawid departed, and came into the forest of Chareth.

 22:6 ¶ When Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº heardºº thatº Däwið דָּוִדº was discovered,ºº and the menºº thatº [were] withº him, (now Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº abodeºº in Giv`à גִּבעָהº underº a treeº in Rämà רָמָה,º having his spearº in his hand,º and allº his servantsº [were] standingºº aboutº him;)

 22:6 ¶ When Shaul heard that Dawid was discovered, and the men that [were] with him, (now Shaul abode in Givah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants [were] standing about him;)

 22:7 Then Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº unto his servantsº that stoodºº aboutº him, Hearº now,ººº ye Benyæmînîm בֶּניְמִינִים;º will the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁיº giveºº every oneº of you fieldsº and vineyards,º [and] makeºº you allº captainsº of thousands,º and captainsº of hundreds;º

 22:7 Then Shaul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benyeminim; will the son of Yishay give every one of you fields and vineyards, [and] make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;

 22:8 Thatº allº of you have conspiredºº againstº me, and [there is] noneº that shewethºººº me that my sonº hath made a leagueºº withº the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁי,º and [there is] noneº ofº you that is sorryºº forº me, or shewethººº untoººº me thatº my sonº hath stirred upººº my servantº againstº me, to lie in wait,ºº as at thisº day?º

 22:8 That all of you have conspired against me, and [there is] none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Yishay, and [there is] none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

 22:9 ¶ Then answeredºº Dö´ëq דֹּאֵגº the ´Áðômî אֲדוֹמִי,º whichº was setºº overº the servantsº of Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and said,ºº I sawººº the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁיº comingºº to Növ נֹב,º toº ´Áçîmele¢ אֲחִימֶלֶךº the sonº of ´Áçi+ûv אֲחִטוּב.º

 22:9 ¶ Then answered Doeg the Adomi, which was set over the servants of Shaul, and said, I saw the son of Yishay coming to Nov, to Achimelekh the son of Achituv.

 22:10 And he enquiredºº of Yähwè יָהוֶהº for him, and gaveºº him victuals,º and gaveºº him the swordº of Golyä± גָּליָתº the Pælištî פְּלִשׁתִּי.º

 22:10 And he enquired of Yahweh for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Golyath the Pelishti.

 22:11 Then the kingº sentºº to callººº ´Áçîmele¢ אֲחִימֶלֶךº the priest,º the sonº of ´Áçi+ûv אֲחִטוּב,º and allº his father'sº house,º the priestsº thatº [were] in Növ נֹב:º and they cameºº allº of them toº the king.º

 22:11 Then the king sent to call Achimelekh the priest, the son of Achituv, and all his father's house, the priests that [were] in Nov: and they came all of them to the king.

 22:12 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº said,ºº Hearºº now,º thou sonº of ´Áçi+ûv אֲחִטוּב.º And he answered,ºº Hereº I [am], my ´áðôn אֲדוֹן.º

 22:12 And Shaul said, Hear now, thou son of Achituv. And he answered, Here I [am], my adon.

 22:13 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº saidºº untoº him, Whyº have ye conspiredºº againstº me, thouº and the sonº of Yišay יִשַׁי,º in that thou hast givenºº him bread,º and a sword,º and hast enquiredºº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº for him, that he should riseºº againstº me, to lie in wait,ºº as at thisº day?º

 22:13 And Shaul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Yishay, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of Elohim for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

 22:14 Then ´Áçîmele¢ אֲחִימֶלֶךº answeredººº the king,º and said,ºº And whoº [is so] faithfulºº among allº thy servantsº as Däwið דָּוִד,º which is the king'sº son in law,º and goethºº atº thy bidding,º and is honourableºº in thine house?º

 22:14 Then Achimelekh answered the king, and said, And who [is so] faithful among all thy servants as Dawid, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?

 22:15 Did I thenº beginºº to enquireºº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº for him? be it farº from me:º let notº the kingº imputeºº [any] thingº unto his servant,º [nor] to allº the houseº of my father:º forº thy servantº knewºº nothingºº of allº this,º lessº orº more.º

 22:15 Did I then begin to enquire of Elohim for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute [any] thing unto his servant, [nor] to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.

 22:16 And the kingº said,ºº Thou shalt surelyºº die,ºº ´Áçîmele¢ אֲחִימֶלֶך,º thou,º and allº thy father'sº house.º

 22:16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Achimelekh, thou, and all thy father's house.

 22:17 ¶ And the kingº saidºº unto the footmenºº that stoodºº aboutº him, Turn,ºº and slayºº the priestsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה;º becauseº their handº alsoº [is] withº Däwið דָּוִד,º and becauseº they knewºº whenº heº fled,ºº and did notº shewºººº it to me.º But the servantsº of the kingº wouldºº notº put forthººº their handº to fallºº upon the priestsº of Yähwè יָהוֶה.º

 22:17 ¶ And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of Yahweh; because their hand also [is] with Dawid, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of Yahweh.

 22:18 And the kingº saidºº to Dö´ëq דֹּאֵג,º Turnºº thou,º and fallºº upon the priests.º And Dö´ëq דֹּאֵגº the ´Áðômî אֲדוֹמִיº turned,ºº and heº fellºº upon the priests,º and slewºº on thatº dayº fourscoreº and fiveº personsº that did wearºº a linenº ephod.º

 22:18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Adomi turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

 22:19 And Növ נֹב,º the cityº of the priests,º smoteºº he with the edgeº of the sword,º both menºº and women,º childrenºº and sucklings,ºº and oxen,º and asses,º and sheep,º with the edgeº of the sword.º

 22:19 And Nov, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

 22:20 ¶ And oneº of the sonsº of ´Áçîmele¢ אֲחִימֶלֶךº the sonº of ´Áçi+ûv אֲחִטוּב,º namedº ´Evyä±är אֶביָתָר,º escaped,ºº and fledºº afterº Däwið דָּוִד.º

 22:20 ¶ And one of the sons of Achimelekh the son of Achituv, named Evyathar, escaped, and fled after Dawid.

 22:21 And ´Evyä±är אֶביָתָרº shewedºº Däwið דָּוִדº thatº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº had slainººº Yähwè's יָהוֶהº priests.º

 22:21 And Evyathar shewed Dawid that Shaul had slain Yahweh's priests.

 22:22 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº unto ´Evyä±är אֶביָתָר,º I knewºº [it] thatº day,º whenº Dö´ëq דֹּאֵגº the ´Áðômî אֲדוֹמִיº [was] there,º thatº he would surelyºº tellºº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל:º Iº have occasionedºº [the death] of allº the personsº of thy father'sº house.º

 22:22 And Dawid said unto Evyathar, I knew [it] that day, when Doeg the Adomi [was] there, that he would surely tell Shaul: I have occasioned [the death] of all the persons of thy father's house.

 22:23 Abideºº thou withº me, fearºº not:º forº he thatº seekethººº my lifeº seekethººº thy life:º butº withº me thouº [shalt be] in safeguard.º

 22:23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou [shalt be] in safeguard.
