 28:1 ¶ And it came to passº in thoseº days,º that the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּיםº gatheredºº their armiesºº togetherºººº for warfare,º to fightºº with Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל.º And ´Ä¢îš אָכִישׁº saidºº untoº Däwið דָּוִד,º Knowºº thou assuredly,ºº thatº thou shalt go outºº withº me to battle,º thouº and thy men.ºº

 28:1 ¶ And it came to pass in those days, that the Pelishtim gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Yisrael. And Akhish said unto Dawid, Know thou assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

 28:2 And Däwið דָּוִדº saidºº toº ´Ä¢îš אָכִישׁ,º Surelyº thouº shalt knowººº whatº thy servantº can do.ºº And ´Ä¢îš אָכִישׁº saidºº toº Däwið דָּוִד,º Thereforeº will I makeºº thee keeperºº of mine headº for ever.ºº

 28:2 And Dawid said to Akhish, Surely thou shalt know what thy servant can do. And Akhish said to Dawid, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.

 28:3 ¶ Now Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº was dead,ºº and allº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº had lamentedºº him, and buriedºº him in Rämà רָמָה,º even in his own city.º And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº had put awayºº those that had familiar spirits,º and the wizards,º out of the land.ºº

 28:3 ¶ Now Shemuel was dead, and all Yisrael had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, even in his own city. And Shaul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.

 28:4 And the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּיםº gathered themselves together,ºº and cameºº and pitchedºº in Šûnëm שׁוּנֵם:º and Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº gatheredºº all Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº together,ººººº and they pitchedºº in Gilböå` גִּלבֹּעַ.º

 28:4 And the Pelishtim gathered themselves together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Shaul gathered all Yisrael together, and they pitched in Gilboa.

 28:5 And when Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº sawººº the hostº of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים,º he was afraid,ºº and his heartº greatlyº trembled.ºº

 28:5 And when Shaul saw the host of the Pelishtim, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

 28:6 And when Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº enquiredºº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º Yähwè יָהוֶהº answeredºº him not,º neitherº by dreams,º norº by ´Ûrîm אוּרִים,º norº by prophets.º

 28:6 And when Shaul enquired of Yahweh, Yahweh answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

 28:7 ¶ Then saidºº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº unto his servants,º Seekºº me a womanº that hathº a familiar spirit,º that I may goººº toº her, and enquireºº of her. And his servantsº saidºº toº him, Behold,º [there is] a womanº that hathº a familiar spiritº at `Ên Dôr עֵין־דּוֹר.º

 28:7 ¶ Then said Shaul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, [there is] a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-Dor.

 28:8 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº disguisedºº himself,º and put onºº otherº raiment,º and heº went,ººº and twoº menºº withº him, and they cameºº toº the womanº by night:º and he said,ºº I pray thee,º divineºº unto me by the familiar spirit,º and bringº me [him] up,ººº whomº I shall nameºº untoº thee.

 28:8 And Shaul disguised himself, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me [him] up, whom I shall name unto thee.

 28:9 And the womanº saidºº untoº him, Behold,º thouº knowestººº whatº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº hath done,ºº howº he hath cut offººº those that have familiar spirits,º and the wizards,º out ofº the land:º whereforeº then layest thouº a snareºº for my life,º to cause me to die?ºº

 28:9 And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Shaul hath done, how he hath cut off those that have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

 28:10 And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº swareºº to her by Yähwè יָהוֶה,º saying,ºº [As] Yähwè יָהוֶהº liveth,º there shallº noº punishmentº happenºº to thee for thisº thing.º

 28:10 And Shaul sware to her by Yahweh, saying, [As] Yahweh liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.

 28:11 Then saidºº the woman,ºº Whomº shall I bring upºº unto thee? And he said,ºº Bring me upººº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל.º

 28:11 Then said the woman, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Shemuel.

 28:12 And when the womanº sawººº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º she criedºº with a loudº voice:º and the womanº spakeºº toº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º saying,ºº Whyº hast thou deceivedºº me? for thouº [art] Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל.º

 28:12 And when the woman saw Shemuel, she cried with a loud voice: and the woman spake to Shaul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? for thou [art] Shaul.

 28:13 And the kingº saidºº unto her, Be notº afraid:ºº forº whatº sawestºº thou? And the womanº saidºº untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º I sawºº ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº ascendingºº out ofº the earth.º

 28:13 And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Shaul, I saw elohim ascending out of the earth.

 28:14 And he saidºº unto her, Whatº formº [is] he of? And she said,ºº An oldº manº cometh up;ºº and heº [is] coveredºº with a mantle.º And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº perceivedºº thatº it [was] Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º and heº stoopedºº with [his] faceº to the ground,º and bowedºº himself.º

 28:14 And he said unto her, What form [is] he of? And she said, An old man cometh up; and he [is] covered with a mantle. And Shaul perceived that it [was] Shemuel, and he stooped with [his] face to the ground, and bowed himself.

 28:15 ¶ And Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵלº saidºº toº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º Whyº hast thou disquietedºº me, to bring me up?ººº And Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº answered,ºº I am soreº distressed;ºº for the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּיםº make warºº against me, and ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº is departedºº fromºº me, and answerethºº me noº more,º neitherº byº prophets,º norº by dreams:º therefore I have calledºº thee, that thou mayest make knownºº unto me whatº I shall do.ºº

 28:15 ¶ And Shemuel said to Shaul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Shaul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Pelishtim make war against me, and Elohim is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

 28:16 Then saidºº Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל,º Whereforeº then dost thou askºº of me, seeing Yähwè יָהוֶהº is departedºº fromºº thee, and is becomeº thine enemy?º

 28:16 Then said Shemuel, Wherefore then dost thou ask of me, seeing Yahweh is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

 28:17 And Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath doneºº to him, asº he spakeºº byº me:º for Yähwè יָהוֶהº hath rentººº the kingdomº out of thine hand,ºº and givenºº it to thy neighbour,º [even] to Däwið דָּוִד:º

 28:17 And Yahweh hath done to him, as he spake by me: for Yahweh hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, [even] to Dawid:

 28:18 Becauseº thou obeyedstºº notº the voiceº of Yähwè יָהוֶה,º norº executedstºº his fierceº wrathº upon `Ámälëk עֲמָלֵק,º thereforeºº hath Yähwè יָהוֶהº doneºº thisº thingº unto thee thisº day.º

 28:18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of Yahweh, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amaleq, therefore hath Yahweh done this thing unto thee this day.

 28:19 Moreoverº Yähwè יָהוֶהº will also deliverººº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº withº thee into the handº of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים:º and to morrowº [shalt] thouº and thy sonsº [be] withº me: Yähwè יָהוֶהº alsoº shall deliverººº the hostº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº into the handº of the Pælištîm פְּלִשׁתִּים.º

 28:19 Moreover Yahweh will also deliver Yisrael with thee into the hand of the Pelishtim: and to morrow [shalt] thou and thy sons [be] with me: Yahweh also shall deliver the host of Yisrael into the hand of the Pelishtim.

 28:20 Then Šä´ûl שָׁאוּלº fellºº straightwayºº allº alongºº on the earth,º and was soreº afraid,ºº because of the wordsºº of Šæmû´ël שְׁמוּאֵל:º andº there wasº noº strengthº in him; forº he had eatenºº noº breadº allº the day,º nor allº the night.º

 28:20 Then Shaul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Shemuel: and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

 28:21 ¶ And the womanº cameºº untoº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and sawºº thatº he was soreº troubled,ºº and saidºº untoº him, Behold,º thine handmaidº hath obeyedºº thy voice,º and I have putºº my lifeº in my hand,º and have hearkenedºº untoº thy wordsº whichº thou spakestºº untoº me.

 28:21 ¶ And the woman came unto Shaul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and said unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou spakest unto me.

 28:22 Nowº therefore, I pray thee,º hearkenºº thouº alsoº unto the voiceº of thine handmaid,º and let me setºº a morselº of breadº beforeº thee; and eat,ºº that thou mayest haveº strength,º whenº thou goestººº on thy way.º

 28:22 Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou mayest have strength, when thou goest on thy way.

 28:23 But he refused,ºº and said,ºº I will notº eat.ºº But his servants,º together withº the woman,º compelledºº him; and he hearkenedºº unto their voice.º So he aroseºº from the earth,ºº and satºº uponº the bed.º

 28:23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat upon the bed.

 28:24 And the womanº had a fatº calfº in the house;º and she hasted,ºº and killedºº it, and tookºº flour,º and kneadedºº [it], and did bakeºº unleavened breadº thereof:

 28:24 And the woman had a fat calf in the house; and she hasted, and killed it, and took flour, and kneaded [it], and did bake unleavened bread thereof:

 28:25 And she broughtºº [it] beforeº Šä´ûl שָׁאוּל,º and beforeº his servants;º and they did eat.ºº Then they rose up,ºº and went awayººº thatº night.º

 28:25 And she brought [it] before Shaul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.
