 4:1 ¶
And the wordº
of
Šæmû´ël
שְׁמוּאֵלº
cameº
to allº
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל.º
Now
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
went outºº
againstºº
the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
to battle,º
and pitchedºº
besideº
´Even `Ëzer
אֶבֶן־עֵזֶר:º
and the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
pitchedºº
in
´Áfëk
אֲפֵק.º |
|
 4:1 ¶
And the word of Shemuel came to all Yisrael. Now Yisrael went out against the Pelishtim to battle, and pitched beside Even-Ezer: and the Pelishtim pitched in Afeq. |
 4:2
And the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
put themselves in arrayºº
againstºº
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל:º
and when they joinedºº
battle,º
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
was smittenºº
beforeº
the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּים:º
and they slewºº
of the armyº
in the fieldº
about fourº
thousandº
men.º |
|
 4:2
And the Pelishtim put themselves in array against Yisrael: and when they joined battle, Yisrael was smitten before the Pelishtim: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. |
 4:3 ¶
And when the peopleº
were comeºº
intoº
the camp,º
the eldersº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
said,ºº
Whereforeº
hath
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
smittenºº
us to dayº
beforeº
the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּים?º
Let us fetchººº
the arkº
of the covenantº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
out of
Šîlò
שִׁילֹהºº
untoº
us, that, when it comethºº
amongº
us, it may saveºº
us out of the handºº
of our enemies.ºº |
|
 4:3 ¶
And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Yisrael said, Wherefore hath Yahweh smitten us to day before the Pelishtim? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of Yahweh out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. |
 4:4
So the peopleº
sentºº
to
Šîlò
שִׁילֹה,º
that they might bringºº
from thenceººº
the arkº
of the covenantº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
Xævä´ô±
צְבָאוֹת,º
which dwellethºº
[between] the cherubims:º
and the twoº
sonsº
of
`Ëlî
עֵלִי,º
Çofnî
חָפנִיº
and
Pînçäs
פִּינחָס,º
[were] thereº
withº
the arkº
of the covenantº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים.º |
|
 4:4
So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of Yahweh Tzevaoth, which dwelleth [between] the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Chofni and Pinchas, [were] there with the ark of the covenant of Elohim. |
 4:5
And when the arkº
of the covenantº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
cameºº
intoº
the camp,º
allº
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
shoutedºº
with a greatº
shout,º
so that the earthº
rangº
again.ºº |
|
 4:5
And when the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, all Yisrael shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. |
 4:6
And when the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
heardººº
the noiseº
of the shout,º
they said,ºº
Whatº
[meaneth] the noiseº
of thisº
greatº
shoutº
in the campº
of the
`Ivrîm
עִברִים?º
And they understoodºº
thatº
the arkº
of
Yähwè
יָהוֶהº
was comeºº
intoº
the camp.º |
|
 4:6
And when the Pelishtim heard the noise of the shout, they said, What [meaneth] the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Ivrim? And they understood that the ark of Yahweh was come into the camp. |
 4:7
And the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
were afraid,ºº
forº
they said,ºº
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
is comeºº
intoº
the camp.º
And they said,ºº
Woeº
unto us! forº
there hath notº
beenº
such a thingº
heretofore.ºº |
|
 4:7
And the Pelishtim were afraid, for they said, Elohim is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. |
 4:8
Woeº
unto us! whoº
shall deliverºº
us out of the handºº
of theseº
mightyº
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים?º
theseº
[are] the
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
that smoteººº
the
Mixrîm
מִצרִיםº
with allº
the plaguesº
in the wilderness.º |
|
 4:8
Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Elohim? these [are] the Elohim that smote the Mitzrim with all the plagues in the wilderness. |
 4:9
Be strong,ºº
and quitºº
yourselves like men,ºº
O ye
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּים,º
that ye be not servantsººº
unto the
`Ivrîm
עִברִים,º
asº
they have beenºº
to you: quitºº
yourselves like men,ºº
and fight.ºº |
|
 4:9
Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Pelishtim, that ye be not servants unto the Ivrim, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. |
 4:10 ¶
And the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּיםº
fought,ºº
and
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
was smitten,ºº
and they fledºº
every manº
into his tent:º
and there wasº
a veryº
greatº
slaughter;º
for there fellºº
of
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלºº
thirtyº
thousandº
footmen.º |
|
 4:10 ¶
And the Pelishtim fought, and Yisrael was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Yisrael thirty thousand footmen. |
 4:11
And the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
was taken;ºº
and the twoº
sonsº
of
`Ëlî
עֵלִי,º
Çofnî
חָפנִיº
and
Pînçäs
פִּינחָס,º
were slain.ºº |
|
 4:11
And the ark of Elohim was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Chofni and Pinchas, were slain. |
 4:12 ¶
And there ranºº
a manº
of
Binyämîn
בִּניָמִיןº
out of the army,ºº
and cameºº
to
Šîlò
שִׁילֹהº
the sameº
dayº
with his clothesº
rent,ºº
and with earthº
uponº
his head.º |
|
 4:12 ¶
And there ran a man of Binyamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. |
 4:13
And when he came,ºº
lo,º
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
satºº
uponº
a seatº
by the waysideºººº
watching:ºº
forº
his heartº
trembledº
forº
the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים.º
And when the manº
cameºº
into the city,º
and toldºº
[it], allº
the cityº
cried out.ºº |
|
 4:13
And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of Elohim. And when the man came into the city, and told [it], all the city cried out. |
 4:14
And when
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
heardººº
the noiseº
of the crying,º
he said,ºº
Whatº
[meaneth] the noiseº
of thisº
tumult?º
And the manº
cameºº
in hastily,ºº
and toldºº
`Ëlî
עֵלִי.º |
|
 4:14
And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What [meaneth] the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. |
 4:15
Now
`Ëlî
עֵלִיº
was ninetyºº
and eightº
yearsº
old;º
and his eyesº
were dim,ºº
that he couldºº
notº
see.ºº |
|
 4:15
Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. |
 4:16
And the manº
saidºº
untoº
`Ëlî
עֵלִי,º
Iº
[am] he that cameºº
out ofº
the army,º
and Iº
fledºº
to dayº
out ofº
the army.º
And he said,ºº
Whatº
isº
there done,º
my son?º |
|
 4:16
And the man said unto Eli, I [am] he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? |
 4:17
And the messengerºº
answeredºº
and said,ºº
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
is fledºº
beforeº
the
Pælištîm
פְּלִשׁתִּים,º
and there hath beenº
alsoº
a greatº
slaughterº
among the people,º
and thy twoº
sonsº
also,º
Çofnî
חָפנִיº
and
Pînçäs
פִּינחָס,º
are dead,ºº
and the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
is taken.ºº |
|
 4:17
And the messenger answered and said, Yisrael is fled before the Pelishtim, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Chofni and Pinchas, are dead, and the ark of Elohim is taken. |
 4:18
And it came to pass,º
when he made mentionºº
ofº
the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִים,º
that he fellºº
from offºº
the seatº
backwardº
byº
the sideº
of the gate,º
and his neckº
brake,ºº
and he died:ºº
forº
he was an oldºº
man,º
and heavy.ººº
And heº
had judgedººº
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵלº
fortyº
years.º |
|
 4:18
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of Elohim, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Yisrael forty years. |
 4:19 ¶
And his daughter in law,º
Pînçäs'
פִּינחָסº
wife,º
was with child,º
[near] to be delivered:ºº
and when she heardººº
the tidingsº
thatº
the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
was taken,ºº
and that her father in lawº
and her husbandº
were dead,ºº
she bowedºº
herselfº
and travailed;ºº
forº
her painsº
cameºº
uponº
her. |
|
 4:19 ¶
And his daughter in law, Pinchas' wife, was with child, [near] to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of Elohim was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. |
 4:20
And about the timeº
of her deathºº
the women that stoodºº
by her saidºº
untoº
her, Fearºº
not;º
forº
thou hast bornºº
a son.º
But she answeredºº
not,º
neitherº
did she regardººº
[it]. |
|
 4:20
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard [it]. |
 4:21
And she namedºº
the childº
´Î Cävôð
אִי־כָּבוֹד,º
saying,ºº
The gloryº
is departedºº
from
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל:ºº
becauseº
the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
was taken,ºº
and becauseº
of her father in lawº
and her husband.º |
|
 4:21
And she named the child I-Kavod, saying, The glory is departed from Yisrael: because the ark of Elohim was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. |
 4:22
And she said,ºº
The gloryº
is departedºº
from
Yi$rä´ël
יִשׂרָאֵל:ºº
forº
the arkº
of
´Élöhîm
אֱלֹהִיםº
is taken.ºº |
|
 4:22
And she said, The glory is departed from Yisrael: for the ark of Elohim is taken. |
