 1:1 ¶ These [are] the words which Mosheh{gr.Moses} spoke to all Israel on this side Jordan in the desert towards the west near the Red Sea, between Paran{gr.Pharan} Tophol, and Lobon, and Aulon, and the gold works.

 1:1 ¶ Theseº [be] the wordsº whichº Mosesº spakeºº untoº allº Israelº on this sideº Jordanº in the wilderness,º in the plainº over againstº the Redº [sea], betweenº Paran,º and Tophel,º and Laban,º and Hazeroth,º and Dizahab.º

 1:2 [It is] a journey of eleven days from Horeb{gr.Choreb} to mount Seir as far as Kadesh{gr.Cades} Barnea{gr.Barne}.

 1:2 ([There are] elevenºº days'º [journey] from Horebºº by the wayº of mountº Seirº untoº Kadeshbarnea.)º

 1:3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first [day] of the month, Mosheh{gr.Moses} spoke to all the children of Israel, according to all things which the Lord commanded him for them:

 1:3 And it came to passº in the fortiethº year,º in the eleventhºº month,º on the firstº [day] of the month,º [that] Mosesº spakeºº untoº the childrenº of Israel,º according unto allº thatº Yahwehº had given him in commandmentººº untoº them;

 1:4 after he had smitten Sihon{gr.Seon} king of the Amorites who dwelt in Heshbon{gr.Esebon}, and Og the king of Bashan{gr.Basan} who dwelt in Ashtaroth{gr.Astaroth} and in Edrain;

 1:4 Afterº he had slainººº Sihonº the kingº of the Amorites,º whichº dweltºº in Heshbon,º and Ogº the kingº of Bashan,º whichº dweltºº at Astarothº in Edrei:º

 1:5 beyond Jordan in the land of Moab, Mosheh{gr.Moses} began to declare this law, saying,

 1:5 On this sideº Jordan,º in the landº of Moab,º beganºº Mosesº to declareººº thisº law,º saying,ºº

 1:6 The Lord your God spoke to us in Horeb{gr.Choreb}, saying, Let it suffice you to have dwelt [so long] in this mountain.

 1:6 Yahwehº our Elohimº spakeºº untoº us in Horeb,º saying,ºº Ye have dweltºº long enoughº in thisº mount:º

 1:7 Turn ye and depart and enter into the mountain of the Amorites, and [go] to all that dwell near about Araba, to the mountain and the plain and to the south, and the land of the Canaanites{gr.Chananites} near the sea, and Antilibanus, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates.

 1:7 Turnºº you, and take your journey,ºº and goºº to the mountº of the Amorites,º and untoº allº [the places] nighº thereunto, in the plain,º in the hills,º and in the vale,º and in the south,º and by the seaº side,º to the landº of the Canaanites,º and unto Lebanon,º untoº the greatº river,º the riverº Euphrates.º

 1:8 Behold, [God] has delivered the land before you; go in and inherit the land, which I sware to your fathers, Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and Isaac, and Jacob, to give it to them and to their seed after them.

 1:8 Behold,ºº I have setººº the landº beforeº you: goºº inº and possessººº the landº whichº Yahwehº swareºº unto your fathers,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob,º to giveºº unto them and to their seedº afterº them.

 1:9 ¶ And I spoke to you at that time, saying, I shall not be able by myself to bear you.

 1:9 ¶ And I spakeºº untoº you at thatº time,º saying,ºº I am not ableººº to bearºº you myself alone:º

 1:10 The Lord your God has multiplied you, and, behold, ye are to-day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

 1:10 Yahwehº your Elohimº hath multipliedºº you, and, behold,º ye [are] this dayº as the starsº of heavenº for multitude.º

 1:11 The Lord God of your fathers add to you a thousand-fold more than you are, and bless you as he has spoken to you.

 1:11 (Yahwehº Elohimº of your fathersº make you a thousandº timesº so many moreº asºº ye [are], and blessºº you, asº he hath promisedºº you!)

 1:12 How shall I alone be able to bear your labour, and your burden, and your gainsayings?

 1:12 Howº can I myself aloneº bearºº your cumbrance,º and your burden,º and your strife?º

 1:13 Take to yourselves wise and understanding and prudent men for your tribes, and I will set your leaders over you.

 1:13 Takeºº you wiseº men,ºº and understanding,ºº and knownºº among your tribes,º and I will makeºº them rulersº over you.

 1:14 And ye answered me and said, The thing which thou hast told us [is] good to do.

 1:14 And ye answeredºº me, and said,ºº The thingº whichº thou hast spokenºº [is] goodº [for us] to do.ºº

 1:15 So I took of you wise and understanding and prudent men, and I set them to rule over you as rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, and rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens, and officers to your judges.

 1:15 So I tookººº the chiefº of your tribes,º wiseº men,ºº and known,ºº and madeºº them headsº overº you, captainsº over thousands,º and captainsº over hundreds,º and captainsº over fifties,º and captainsº over tens,º and officersºº among your tribes.º

 1:16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear [causes] between your brethren, and judge rightly between a man and [his] brother, and the stranger that is with him.

 1:16 And I chargedººº your judgesºº at thatº time,º saying,ºº Hearºº [the causes] betweenº your brethren,º and judgeºº righteouslyº betweenº [every] manº and his brother,º and the strangerº [that is] with him.

 1:17 Thou shalt not have respect to persons in judgment, thou shalt judge small and great equally; thou shalt not shrink from before the person of a man, for the judgment is God's; and whatsoever matter shall be too hard for you, ye shall bring it to me, and I will hear it.

 1:17 Ye shall notº respectºº personsº in judgment;º [but] ye shall hearºº the smallº as well as the great;º ye shall notº be afraidºº of the faceºº of man;º forº the judgmentº [is] Elohim's:º and the causeº thatº is too hardºº forº you, bringºº [it] untoº me, and I will hearºº it.

 1:18 And I charged upon you at that time all the commands which ye shall perform.

 1:18 And I commandedºº you at thatº timeºº allº the thingsº whichº ye should do.ºº

 1:19 ¶ And we departed from Horeb{gr.Choreb}, and went through all that great wilderness and terrible, which ye saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorite, as the Lord our God charged us, and we came as far as Kadesh{gr.Cades} Barnea{gr.Barne}.

 1:19 ¶ And when we departedºº from Horeb,ºº we went throughºººº allº thatº greatº and terribleºº wilderness,º whichº ye sawºº by the wayº of the mountainº of the Amorites,º asº Yahwehº our Elohimº commandedºº us; and we cameºº toº Kadeshbarnea.º

 1:20 And I said to you, Ye have come as far as the mountain of the Amorite, which the Lord our God gives to you:

 1:20 And I saidºº untoº you, Ye are comeºº untoº the mountainº of the Amorites,º whichº Yahwehº our Elohimº doth giveºº unto us.

 1:21 behold, the Lord your God has delivered to us the land before you: go up and inherit it as the Lord God of your fathers said to you; fear not, neither be afraid.

 1:21 Behold,ºº Yahwehº thy Elohimº hath setººº the landº beforeº thee: go upºº [and] possessºº [it], asº Yahwehº Elohimº of thy fathersº hath saidºº unto thee; fearºº not,º neitherº be discouraged.ºº

 1:22 ¶ And ye all came to me, and said, Let us send men before us, and let them go up to the land for us; and let them bring back to us a report of the way by which we shall go up, and of the cities into which we shall enter.

 1:22 ¶ And ye came nearºº untoº me every oneº of you, and said,ºº We will sendºº menºº beforeº us, and they shall search us outººº the land,º and bringºº us wordº againººº by whatº wayº we must go up,ºº andº intoº whatº citiesº we shall come.ºº

 1:23 And the saying pleased me: and I took of you twelve men, one man of a tribe.

 1:23 And the sayingº pleased me well:ººº and I tookºº twelveºº menºº ofº you, oneº of a tribe:ºº

 1:24 And they turned and went up to the mountain, and they came as far as the valley of the cluster, and surveyed it.

 1:24 And they turnedºº and went upºº into the mountain,º and cameºº untoº the valleyº of Eshcol,º and searched it out.ººº

 1:25 And they took in their hands of the fruit of the land, and brought it to you, and said, The land is good which the Lord our God gives us.

 1:25 And they tookºº of the fruitºº of the landº in their hands,º and brought [it] downºº untoº us, and broughtºº us wordº again,ºº and said,ºº [It is] a goodº landº whichº Yahwehº our Elohimº doth giveºº us.

 1:26 Yet ye would not go up, but rebelled against the words of the Lord our God.

 1:26 Notwithstanding ye wouldºº notº go up,ºº but rebelledºº againstºº the commandmentº of Yahwehº your Elohim:º

 1:27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us.

 1:27 And ye murmuredºº in your tents,º and said,ºº Because Yahwehº hatedº us, he hath brought us forthºº out of the landºº of Egypt,º to deliverºº us into the handº of the Amorites,º to destroyºº us.

 1:28 Whither do we go up? and your brethren drew away your heart, saying, [It is a] great nation and populous, and mightier than we; and [there are] cities great and walled up to heaven: moreover we saw there the sons of the giants.

 1:28 Whitherº shall weº go up?ºº our brethrenº have discouragedººº our heart,º saying,ºº The peopleº [is] greaterº and tallerºº thanº we; the citiesº [are] greatº and walledº upºº to heaven;º and moreoverº we have seenºº the sonsº of the Anakimsº there.º

 1:29 And I said to you, Fear not, neither be ye afraid of them;

 1:29 Then I saidºº untoº you, Dreadºº not,º neitherº be afraidºº ofº them.

 1:30 the Lord your God who goes before your face, he shall fight against them together with you effectually, according to all that he wrought for you in the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt};

 1:30 Yahwehº your Elohimº which goethºº beforeº you, heº shall fightºº for you, according to allº thatº he didºº forº you in Egyptº before your eyes;º

 1:31 and in this wilderness which ye saw, by the way of the mountain of the Amorite; how the Lord thy God will bear thee as a nursling, as if any man should nurse his child, through all the way which ye have gone until ye came to this place.

 1:31 And in the wilderness,º whereº thou hast seenºº how thatº Yahwehº thy Elohimº bareºº thee, asº a manº doth bearººº his son,º in allº the wayº thatº ye went,ºº untilº ye cameºº intoº thisº place.º

 1:32 And in this matter ye believed not the Lord our God,

 1:32 Yet in thisº thingº ye did notº believeºº Yahwehº your Elohim,º

 1:33 who goes before you in the way to choose you a place, guiding you in fire by night, shewing you the way by which ye go, and a cloud by day.

 1:33 Who wentºº in the wayº beforeº you, to search you outºº a placeº to pitch your tentsºº [in], in fireº by night,º to shewºº you by whatº wayº ye should go,ººº and in a cloudº by day.º

 1:34 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, and being greatly provoked he sware, saying,

 1:34 And Yahwehº heardººº the voiceº of your words,º and was wroth,ºº and sware,ºº saying,ºº

 1:35 Not one of these men shall see this good land, which I sware to their fathers,

 1:35 Surelyº there shall not oneº of theseº menºº of thisº evilº generationº seeººº that goodº land,º whichº I swareºº to giveºº unto your fathers,º

 1:36 except Caleb{gr.Chaleb} the son of Jephunneh{gr.Jephonne}, he shall see it; and to him I will give the land on which he went up, and to his sons, because he attended to the things of the Lord.

 1:36 Saveº Calebº the sonº of Jephunneh;º heº shall seeºº it, and to him will I giveººº the landº thatº he hath troddenº upon,ºº and to his children,º becauseºº he hath whollyºº followedº Yahweh.º

 1:37 And the Lord was angry with me for your sake, saying, Neither shalt thou by any means enter therein.

 1:37 Alsoº Yahwehº was angryºº with me for your sakes,º saying,ºº Thouº alsoº shalt notº goºº inº thither.º

 1:38 Joshua{gr.Jesus} the son of Nun{gr.Naue}, who stands by thee, he shall enter in there; do thou strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

 1:38 [But] Joshuaº the sonº of Nun,º which standethºº beforeº thee, heº shall go inºº thither:º encourageºº him: forº heº shall causeº Israelº to inheritºº it.

 1:39 And every young child who this day knows not good or evil,-- they shall enter therein, and to them I will give it, and they shall inherit it.

 1:39 Moreover your little ones,º whichº ye saidºº should beº a prey,º and your children,º whichº in that dayº had no knowledgeººº between goodº and evil,º theyº shall go inºº thither,º and unto them will I giveºº it, and theyº shall possessºº it.

 1:40 And ye turned and marched into the wilderness, in the way by the Red Sea.

 1:40 But [as for] you,º turnºº you, and take your journeyºº into the wildernessº by the wayº of the Redº sea.º

 1:41 And ye answered and said, We have sinned before the Lord our God; we will go up and fight according to all that the Lord our God has commanded us: and having taken every one his weapons of war, and being gathered together, ye went up to the mountain.

 1:41 Then ye answeredºº and saidºº untoº me, We have sinnedºº against Yahweh,º weº will go upºº and fight,ºº according to allº thatº Yahwehº our Elohimº commandedºº us. And when ye had girdedºº onº every manºº his weaponsº of war,º ye were readyºº to go upºº into the hill.º

 1:42 And the Lord said to me, Tell them, Ye shall not go up, neither shall ye fight, for I am not with you; thus shall ye not be destroyed before your enemies.

 1:42 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, Sayºº unto them, Go not up,ººº neitherº fight;ºº forº I [am] notº amongº you; lestº ye be smittenºº beforeº your enemies.ºº

 1:43 And I spoke to you, and ye did not hearken to me; and ye transgressed the commandment of the Lord; and ye forced your way and went up into the mountain.

 1:43 So I spakeºº untoº you; and ye would notº hear,ºº but rebelledºº againstºº the commandmentº of Yahweh,º and wentºº presumptuouslyºº upººº into the hill.º

 1:44 And the Amorite who dwelt in that mountain came out to meet you, and pursued you as bees do, and wounded you from Seir to Herma.

 1:44 And the Amorites,º which dweltºº in thatº mountain,º came outºº againstºº you, and chasedºº you, asº beesº do,ºº and destroyedºº you in Seir,º [even] untoº Hormah.º

 1:45 And ye sat down and wept before the Lord our God, and the Lord hearkened not to your voice, neither did he take heed to you.

 1:45 And ye returnedºº and weptºº beforeº Yahweh;º but Yahwehº would notº hearkenºº to your voice,º norº give earºº untoº you.

 1:46 And ye dwelt in Kadesh{gr.Cades} many days, as many days as ye dwelt [there].

 1:46 So ye abodeºº in Kadeshº manyº days,º according unto the daysº thatº ye abodeºº [there].
