 9:1 ¶ Hear, O Israel: Thou goest this day across Jordan to inherit nations greater and stronger than yourselves, cities great and walled up to heaven;

 9:1 ¶ Hear,ºº O Israel:º Thouº [art] to pass overººº Jordanº this day,º to go inºº to possessºº nationsº greaterº and mightierº thanº thyself, citiesº greatº and fenced upºº to heaven,º

 9:2 a people great and many and tall, the sons of Anak{gr.Enac}, whom thou knowest, and concerning whom thou hast heard [say], Who can stand before the children of Anak{gr.Enac}?

 9:2 A peopleº greatº and tall,ºº the childrenº of the Anakims,º whomº thouº knowest,ºº and [of whom] thouº hast heardºº [say], Whoº can standºº beforeº the childrenº of Anak!º

 9:3 And thou shalt know to-day, that the Lord thy God he shall go before thy face: he is a consuming fire; he shall destroy them, and he shall turn them back before thee, and shall destroy them quickly, as the Lord said to thee.

 9:3 Understandºº therefore this day,º thatº Yahwehº thy Elohimº [is] heº which goeth overºº beforeº thee; [as] a consumingºº fireº heº shall destroyºº them, and heº shall bring them downºº before thy face:º so shalt thou drive them out,ºº and destroyºº them quickly,º asº Yahwehº hath saidºº unto thee.

 9:4 Speak not in thine heart, when the Lord thy God has destroyed these nations before thy face, saying, For my righteousness the Lord brought me in to inherit this good land.

 9:4 Speakºº notº thou in thine heart,º after that Yahwehº thy Elohimº hath cast them outººº from beforeºº thee, saying,ºº For my righteousnessº Yahwehº hath brought me inºº to possessººº thisº land:º but for the wickednessº of theseº nationsº Yahwehº doth drive them outºº from beforeºº thee.

 9:5 Not for thy righteousness, nor for the holiness of thy heart, dost thou go in to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the Lord will destroy them from before thee, and that he may establish the covenant, which the Lord sware to our fathers, to Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and to Isaac, and to Jacob.

 9:5 Notº for thy righteousness,º or for the uprightnessº of thine heart,º dost thouº goºº to possessººº their land:º butº for the wickednessº of theseº nationsº Yahwehº thy Elohimº doth drive them outºº from beforeºº thee, and thatº he may performººº the wordº whichº Yahwehº swareºº unto thy fathers,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob.º

 9:6 And thou shalt know to-day, that [it is] not for thy righteousnesses the Lord thy God gives thee this good land to inherit, for thou art a stiff-necked people.

 9:6 Understandºº therefore, thatº Yahwehº thy Elohimº givethºº thee notºº thisº goodº landº to possessºº it for thy righteousness;º forº thouº [art] a stiffneckedºº people.º

 9:7 ¶ Remember, forget not, how much thou provokedst the Lord thy God in the wilderness: from the day that ye came forth out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, even till ye came into this place, ye continued to be disobedient toward the Lord.

 9:7 ¶ Remember,ºº [and] forgetºº not,ºº howº thou provokedstºº Yahwehº thy Elohimº to wrathºº in the wilderness:º fromº the dayº thatº thou didst departº outºº of the landºº of Egypt,º untilº ye cameºº untoº thisº place,º ye have beenº rebelliousºº againstº Yahweh.º

 9:8 Also in Horeb{gr.Choreb} ye provoked the Lord, and the Lord was angry with you to destroy you;

 9:8 Also in Horebº ye provokedººº Yahwehº to wrath,ºº so that Yahwehº was angryºº with you to have destroyedºº you.

 9:9 when I went up into the mountain to receive the tables of stone, the tables of the covenant, which the Lord made with you, and I was in the mountain forty days and forty nights, I ate no bread and drank no water.

 9:9 When I was gone upºº into the mountº to receiveºº the tablesº of stone,º [even] the tablesº of the covenantº whichº Yahwehº madeºº withº you, then I abodeºº in the mountº fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º I neitherº did eatºº breadº norº drinkºº water:º

 9:10 And the Lord gave me the two tables of stone written with the finger of God, and on them there had been written all the words which the Lord spoke to you in the mountain in the day of the assembly.

 9:10 And Yahwehº deliveredºº untoº meº twoº tablesº of stoneº writtenºº with the fingerº of Elohim;º and onº them [was written] according to allº the words,º whichº Yahwehº spakeºº withº you in the mountº out of the midstºº of the fireº in the dayº of the assembly.º

 9:11 And it came to pass after forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.

 9:11 And it came to passº at the endºº of fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º [that] Yahwehº gaveººº meº the twoº tablesº of stone,º [even] the tablesº of the covenant.º

 9:12 And the Lord said to me, Arise, go down quickly from hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} have transgressed; they have gone aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them, and have made themselves a molten image.

 9:12 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº me, Arise,ºº get thee downºº quicklyº from hence;ºº forº thy peopleº whichº thou hast brought forthºº out of Egyptºº have corruptedºº [themselves]; they are quicklyº turned asideºº out ofº the wayº whichº I commandedºº them; they have madeºº them a molten image.º

 9:13 And the Lord spoke to me, saying, I have spoken to thee once and again, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiff-necked people.

 9:13 Furthermore Yahwehº spakeºº untoº me, saying,ºº I have seenººº thisº people,º and, behold,º itº [is] a stiffneckedºº people:º

 9:14 And now suffer me utterly to destroy them, and I will blot out their name from under heaven, and will make of thee a nation great and strong, and more numerous than this.

 9:14 Let me alone,ººº that I may destroyºº them, and blot outººº their nameº from underºº heaven:º and I will makeºº ofº thee a nationº mightierº and greaterº thanº they.

 9:15 And I turned and went down from the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to heaven; and the two tables of the testimonies [were] in my two hands.

 9:15 So I turnedºº and came downºº fromº the mount,º and the mountº burnedºº with fire:º and the twoº tablesº of the covenantº [were] inº my twoº hands.º

 9:16 And when I saw that ye had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made to yourselves a molten image, and had gone astray out of the way, which the Lord commanded you to keep;

 9:16 And I looked,ºº and, behold,º ye had sinnedºº against Yahwehº your Elohim,º [and] had madeºº you a moltenº calf:º ye had turned asideºº quicklyº out ofº the wayº whichº Yahwehº had commandedºº you.

 9:17 then I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before you.

 9:17 And I tookºº the twoº tables,º and castºº them out ofºº my twoº hands,º and brakeºº them before your eyes.º

 9:18 And I made my petition before the Lord as also at the first forty days and forty nights: I ate no bread and drank no water, on account of all your sins which ye sinned in doing evil before the Lord God to provoke him.

 9:18 And I fell downºº beforeº Yahweh,º as at the first,º fortyº daysº and fortyº nights:º I did neitherº eatºº bread,º norº drinkºº water,º because ofº allº your sinsº whichº ye sinned,ºº in doingºº wickedlyº in the sightº of Yahweh,º to provoke him to anger.ºº

 9:19 And I was greatly terrified because of the wrath and anger, because the Lord was provoked with you utterly to destroy you; yet the Lord hearkened to me at this time also.

 9:19 Forº I was afraidºº ofºº the angerº and hot displeasure,º wherewithº Yahwehº was wrothºº againstº you to destroyºº you. But Yahwehº hearkenedºº untoº me at thatº timeº also.º

 9:20 And he was angry with Aaron to destroy him utterly, and I prayed for Aaron also at that time.

 9:20 And Yahwehº was veryº angryººº with Aaronº to have destroyedºº him: and I prayedºº forº Aaronº alsoº the sameº time.º

 9:21 And your sin which ye had made, [even] the calf, I took, and burnt it with fire, and pounded it and ground it down till it became fine; and it became like dust, and I cast the dust into the brook that descended from the mountain.

 9:21 And I tookºº your sin,ºº the calfº whichº ye had made,ºº and burntºº it with fire,º and stampedºº it, [and] groundºº [it] very small,ºº [even] untilº itº was as smallºº as dust:º and I castººº the dustº thereof intoº the brookº that descendedº outºº ofº the mount.º

 9:22 Also in the burning, and in the temptation, and at the graves of lust, ye provoked the Lord.

 9:22 And at Taberah,º and at Massah,º and at Kibrothhattaavah,º ye provokedºº Yahwehº to wrath.ºº

 9:23 And when the Lord sent you forth from Kadesh{gr.Cades} Barnea{gr.Barne}, saying, Go up and inherit the land which I give to you, then ye disobeyed the word of the Lord your God, and believed him not, and hearkened not to his voice.

 9:23 Likewise when Yahwehº sentºº you from Kadeshbarnea,ºº saying,ºº Go upºº and possessººº the landº whichº I have givenºº you; then ye rebelledºº againstºº the commandmentº of Yahwehº your Elohim,º and ye believedºº him not,º norº hearkenedºº to his voice.º

 9:24 Ye were disobedient in the things relating to the Lord from the day in which he became known to you.

 9:24 Ye have beenº rebelliousºº againstº Yahwehº from the dayºº that I knewºº you.

 9:25 And I prayed before the Lord forty days and forty nights, the number that I prayed [before], for the Lord said that he would utterly destroy you.

 9:25 Thus I fell downºº beforeº Yahwehºº fortyº daysº and fortyº nights,º asº I fell downºº [at the first]; becauseº Yahwehº had saidºº he would destroyºº you.

 9:26 And I prayed to God, and said, O Lord, King of gods, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, whom thou didst redeem, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} with thy great power, and with thy strong hand, and with thy high arm.

 9:26 I prayedºº therefore untoº Yahweh,º and said,ºº O Adonaiº Yahweh,º destroyºº notº thy peopleº and thine inheritance,º whichº thou hast redeemedºº through thy greatness,º whichº thou hast brought forthºº out of Egyptºº with a mightyº hand.º

 9:27 Remember Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and Isaac, and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thyself: look not upon the hardness of heart of this people, and their impieties, and their sins.

 9:27 Rememberºº thy servants,º Abraham,º Isaac,º and Jacob;º lookºº notº untoº the stubbornnessº of thisº people,º nor toº their wickedness,º nor toº their sin:º

 9:28 Lest the inhabitants of the land whence thou broughtest us out speak, saying, Because the Lord could not bring them into the land of which he spoke to them, and because he hated them, has he brought them forth to slay them in the wilderness.

 9:28 Lestº the landº whenceººº thou broughtest us outºº say,ºº Because Yahwehº was not ableºººº to bringºº them intoº the landº whichº he promisedºº them, and because he hatedºº them, he hath brought them outºº to slayºº them in the wilderness.º

 9:29 And these [are] thy people and thy portion, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} with thy great strength, and with thy mighty hand, and with thy high arm.

 9:29 Yet theyº [are] thy peopleº and thine inheritance,º whichº thou broughtest outºº by thy mightyº powerº and by thy stretched outºº arm.º
