 22:1 ¶
And the children of Israel departed, and encamped on the west of Moab by Jordan toward Jericho. |
|
 22:1 ¶
And the childrenº
of Israelº
set forward,ºº
and pitchedºº
in the plainsº
of Moabº
on this sideºº
Jordanº
[by] Jericho.º |
 22:2 ¶
And when Bela{gr.Balac} son of Zippor{gr.Sepphor} saw all that Israel did to the Amorite, |
|
 22:2 ¶
And Balakº
the sonº
of Zipporº
sawººº
allº
thatº
Israelº
had doneºº
to the Amorites.º |
 22:3
then Moab feared the people exceedingly because they were many; and Moab was grieved before the face of the children of Israel. |
|
 22:3
And Moabº
was soreº
afraidººº
ofºº
the people,º
becauseº
theyº
[were] many:º
and Moabº
was distressedºº
becauseºº
ofº
the childrenº
of Israel.º |
 22:4
And Moab said to the elders of Midian{gr.Madiam}, Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a calf would lick up the green [herbs] of the field:-- and Bela{gr.Balac} son of Zippor{gr.Sepphor} was king of Moab at that time. |
|
 22:4
And Moabº
saidºº
untoº
the eldersº
of Midian,º
Nowº
shall this companyº
lick upººº
allº
[that are] round aboutº
us, as the oxº
licketh upººº
the grassº
of the field.º
And Balakº
the sonº
of Zipporº
[was] kingº
of the Moabitesº
at thatº
time.º |
 22:5
And he sent ambassadors to Balaam the son of Beor, to Phathura, which is on a river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, a people is come out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and behold it has covered the face of the earth, and it has encamped close to me. |
|
 22:5
He sentºº
messengersº
therefore untoº
Balaamº
the sonº
of Beorº
to Pethor,º
whichº
[is] byº
the riverº
of the landº
of the childrenº
of his people,º
to callºº
him, saying,ºº
Behold,º
there is a peopleº
come outºº
from Egypt:ºº
behold,º
they coverººº
the faceº
of the earth,º
and theyº
abideºº
over againstºº
me: |
 22:6
And now come, curse me this people, for it is stronger than we; if we may be able to smite some of them, and I will cast them out of the land: for I know that whomsoever thou dost bless, they are blessed, and whomsoever thou dost curse, they are cursed. |
|
 22:6
Comeººº
nowº
therefore, I pray thee,º
curseºº
meº
thisº
people;º
forº
theyº
[are] too mightyº
forºº
me: peradventureº
I shall prevail,ºº
[that] we may smiteºº
them, and [that] I may drive them outºº
ofº
the land:º
forº
I wotººº
that he whomº
thou blessestºº
[is] blessed,ºº
and he whomº
thou cursestºº
is cursed.ºº |
 22:7
And the elders of Moab went, and the elders of Midian{gr.Madiam}, and their divining [instruments were] in their hands; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Bela{gr.Balac}. |
|
 22:7
And the eldersº
of Moabº
and the eldersº
of Midianº
departedººº
with the rewards of divinationº
in their hand;º
and they cameºº
untoº
Balaam,º
and spakeºº
untoº
him the wordsº
of Balak.º |
 22:8
And he said to them, Tarry here the night, and I will answer you the things which the Lord shall say to me; and the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. |
|
 22:8
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Lodgeºº
hereº
this night,º
and I will bringºº
you wordº
again,ºº
asº
Yahwehº
shall speakºº
untoº
me: and the princesº
of Moabº
abodeºº
withº
Balaam.º |
 22:9
And God came to Balaam, and said to him, Who are these men with thee? |
|
 22:9
And Elohimº
cameºº
untoº
Balaam,º
and said,ºº
Whatº
menºº
[are] theseº
withº
thee? |
 22:10
And Balaam said to God, Bela{gr.Balac} son of Zippor{gr.Sepphor}, king of Moab, sent them to me, saying, |
|
 22:10
And Balaamº
saidºº
untoº
Elohim,º
Balakº
the sonº
of Zippor,º
kingº
of Moab,º
hath sentºº
untoº
me, [saying], |
 22:11
Behold, a people has come forth out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, and has covered the face of the land, and it has encamped near to me; and now come, curse it for me, if indeed I shall be able to smite it, and cast it out of the land. |
|
 22:11
Behold,º
[there is] a peopleº
come outºº
of Egypt,ºº
which coverethººº
the faceº
of the earth:º
comeººº
now,º
curseºº
me them; peradventureº
I shall be ableºº
to overcomeºº
them, and drive them out.ºº |
 22:12
And God said to Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them, neither shalt thou curse the people; for they are blessed. |
|
 22:12
And Elohimº
saidºº
untoº
Balaam,º
Thou shalt notº
goººº
withº
them; thou shalt notº
curseººº
the people:º
forº
theyº
[are] blessed.ºº |
 22:13
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Bela{gr.Balac}, Depart quickly to your lord; God does not permit me to go with you. |
|
 22:13
And Balaamº
rose upºº
in the morning,º
and saidºº
untoº
the princesº
of Balak,º
Getººº
you intoº
your land:º
forº
Yahwehº
refusethºº
to give me leaveºº
to goºº
withº
you. |
 22:14
And the princes of Moab rose, and came to Bela{gr.Balac}, and said, Balaam will not come with us. |
|
 22:14
And the princesº
of Moabº
rose up,ºº
and they wentºº
untoº
Balak,º
and said,ºº
Balaamº
refusethºº
to comeºº
withº
us. |
 22:15 ¶
And Bela{gr.Balac} yet again sent more princes and more honourable than they. |
|
 22:15 ¶
And Balakº
sentºº
yetº
againºº
princes,º
more,º
and more honourableºº
than they.ºº |
 22:16
And they came to Balaam, and they say to him, Thus says Bela{gr.Balac} the son of Zippor{gr.Sepphor}: I beseech thee, delay not to come to me. |
|
 22:16
And they cameºº
toº
Balaam,º
and saidºº
to him, Thusº
saithºº
Balakº
the sonº
of Zippor,º
Let nothing,º
I pray thee,º
hinderºº
thee from comingººº
untoº
me: |
 22:17
For I will greatly honour thee, and will do for thee whatsoever thou shalt say; come then, curse me this people. |
|
 22:17
Forº
I will promoteºº
thee unto veryº
greatºº
honour,ººº
and I will doºº
whatsoeverºº
thou sayestºº
untoº
me: comeººº
therefore, I pray thee,º
curseºº
meº
thisº
people.º |
 22:18
And Balaam answered and said to the princes of Bela{gr.Balac}, If Bela{gr.Balac} would give me his house full of silver and gold, I shall not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord God, to make it little or great in my mind. |
|
 22:18
And Balaamº
answeredºº
and saidºº
untoº
the servantsº
of Balak,º
Ifº
Balakº
would giveºº
me his houseº
fullº
of silverº
and gold,º
I cannotººº
go beyondººº
the wordº
of Yahwehº
my Elohim,º
to doºº
lessº
orº
more.º |
 22:19
And now do ye also tarry here this night, and I shall know what the Lord will yet say to me. |
|
 22:19
Nowº
therefore, I pray you,º
tarryºº
yeº
alsoº
hereº
this night,º
that I may knowºº
whatº
Yahwehº
will sayºº
untoº
me more.ºº |
 22:20
And God came to Balaam by night, and said to him, If these men are come to call thee, rise and follow them; nevertheless the word which I shall speak to thee, it shalt thou do. |
|
 22:20
And Elohimº
cameºº
untoº
Balaamº
at night,º
and saidºº
unto him, Ifº
the menºº
comeºº
to callºº
thee, rise up,ºº
[and] goººº
withº
them; but yetºº
the wordº
whichº
I shall sayºº
untoº
thee, that shalt thou do.ºº |
 22:21
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. |
|
 22:21
And Balaamº
rose upºº
in the morning,º
and saddledººº
his ass,º
and wentººº
withº
the princesº
of Moab.º |
 22:22 ¶
And God was very angry because he went; and the angel of the Lord rose up to withstand him. Now he had mounted his ass, and his two servants were with him. |
|
 22:22 ¶
And Elohim'sº
angerº
was kindledºº
becauseº
heº
went:ºº
and the angelº
of Yahwehº
stoodºº
in the wayº
for an adversaryº
against him. Now heº
was ridingºº
uponº
his ass,º
and his twoº
servantsº
[were] withº
him. |
 22:23
And when the ass saw the angel of God standing opposite in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand, then the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and [Balaam] smote the ass with his staff to direct her in the way. |
|
 22:23
And the assº
sawººº
the angelº
of Yahwehº
standingºº
in the way,º
and his swordº
drawnºº
in his hand:º
and the assº
turned asideºº
out ofº
the way,º
and wentººº
into the field:º
and Balaamº
smoteººº
the ass,º
to turnºº
her into the way.º |
 22:24
And the angel of the Lord stood in the avenues of the vines, a fence [being] on this side and a fence on that. |
|
 22:24
But the angelº
of Yahwehº
stoodºº
in a pathº
of the vineyards,º
a wallº
[being] on this side,ºº
and a wallº
on that side.ºº |
 22:25
And when the ass saw the angel of God, she thrust herself against the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall, and he smote her again. |
|
 22:25
And when the assº
sawººº
the angelº
of Yahweh,º
she thrustºº
herselfº
untoº
the wall,º
and crushedººº
Balaam'sº
footº
againstº
the wall:º
and he smoteºº
her again.ºº |
 22:26
And the angel of the Lord went farther, and came and stood in a narrow place where it was impossible to turn to the right or the left. |
|
 22:26
And the angelº
of Yahwehº
wentºº
further,ºº
and stoodºº
in a narrowº
place,º
whereº
[was] noº
wayº
to turnºº
either to the right handº
or to the left.º |
 22:27
And when the ass saw the angel of God, she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam was angry, and struck the ass with his staff. |
|
 22:27
And when the assº
sawººº
the angelº
of Yahweh,º
she fell downºº
underº
Balaam:º
and Balaam'sº
angerº
was kindled,ºº
and he smoteººº
the assº
with a staff.º |
 22:28
And God opened the mouth of the ass, and she says to Balaam, What have I done to thee, that thou hast smitten me this third time? |
|
 22:28
And Yahwehº
openedººº
the mouthº
of the ass,º
and she saidºº
unto Balaam,º
Whatº
have I doneºº
unto thee, thatº
thou hast smittenºº
me theseº
threeº
times?º |
 22:29
And Balaam said to the ass, Because thou hast mocked me; and if I [had] had a sword in my hand, I would now have killed thee. |
|
 22:29
And Balaamº
saidºº
unto the ass,º
Becauseº
thou hast mockedºº
me: I wouldº
there wereº
a swordº
in mine hand,º
forº
nowº
would I killºº
thee. |
 22:30
And the ass says to Balaam, [Am] not I thine ass on which thou hast ridden since thy youth till this day? did I ever do thus to thee, utterly disregarding [thee]? and he said, No. |
|
 22:30
And the assº
saidºº
untoº
Balaam,º
[Am] notº
Iº
thine ass,º
uponº
whichº
thou hast riddenºº
ever sinceºº
[I was] thine untoº
thisº
day?º
was I everºº
wontºº
to doº
soººº
unto thee? And he said,ºº
Nay.º |
 22:31
And God opened the eyes of Balaam, and he sees the angel of the Lord withstanding [him] in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand, and he stooped down and worshipped on his face. |
|
 22:31
Then Yahwehº
openedººº
the eyesº
of Balaam,º
and he sawººº
the angelº
of Yahwehº
standingºº
in the way,º
and his swordº
drawnºº
in his hand:º
and he bowed downºº
his head,º
and fell flatºº
on his face.º |
 22:32
And the angel of God said to him, Why hast thou smitten thine ass this third time? and, behold, I came out to withstand thee, for thy way was not seemly before me; and when the ass saw me, she turned away from me this third time. |
|
 22:32
And the angelº
of Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
him, Whereforeºº
hast thou smittenººº
thine assº
theseº
threeº
times?º
behold,º
Iº
went outºº
to withstandº
thee, becauseº
[thy] wayº
is perverseºº
beforeº
me: |
 22:33
And if she had not turned out of the way, surely now, I should have slain thee, and should have saved her alive. |
|
 22:33
And the assº
sawºº
me, and turnedºº
fromº
meº
theseº
threeº
times:º
unlessº
she had turnedºº
fromºº
me,º
surelyº
nowº
alsoº
I had slainºº
thee, and saved her alive.ººº |
 22:34
And Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I did not know that thou wert standing opposite in the way to meet [me]; and now if it shall not be pleasing to thee [for me to go on], I will return. |
|
 22:34
And Balaamº
saidºº
untoº
the angelº
of Yahweh,º
I have sinned;ºº
forº
I knewºº
notº
thatº
thouº
stoodestºº
in the wayº
againstºº
me: nowº
therefore, ifº
it displeaseºº
thee,ººº
I will get me back again.ºº |
 22:35
And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, Go with the men: nevertheless the word which I shall speak to thee, that thou shalt take heed to speak. And Balaam went with the princes of Bela{gr.Balac}. |
|
 22:35
And the angelº
of Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Balaam,º
Goººº
withº
the men:ºº
but onlyºº
the wordº
thatº
I shall speakºº
untoº
thee, that thou shalt speak.ºº
So Balaamº
wentººº
withº
the princesº
of Balak.º |
 22:36 ¶
And when Bela{gr.Balac} heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him, to a city of Moab, which is on the borders of Arnon, which is on the [extreme] part of the borders. |
|
 22:36 ¶
And when Balakº
heardºº
thatº
Balaamº
was come,ºº
he went outºº
to meetºº
him untoº
a cityº
of Moab,º
whichº
[is] inº
the borderº
of Arnon,º
whichº
[is] in the utmostº
coast.º |
 22:37
And Bela{gr.Balac} said to Balaam, Did I not send to thee to call thee? why hast thou not come to me? shall I not indeed be able to honour thee? |
|
 22:37
And Balakº
saidºº
untoº
Balaam,º
Did I notº
earnestlyºº
sendºº
untoº
thee to callºº
thee? whereforeº
camestºº
thou notº
untoº
me? am I not ableººº
indeedº
to promote thee to honour?ºº |
 22:38
And Balaam said to Bela{gr.Balac}, Behold, I am now come to thee: shall I be able to say anything? the word which God shall put into my mouth, that I shall speak. |
|
 22:38
And Balaamº
saidºº
untoº
Balak,º
Lo,º
I am comeºº
untoº
thee: have I nowº
any powerºº
at allºº
to sayºº
any thing?º
the wordº
thatº
Elohimº
puttethºº
in my mouth,º
that shall I speak.ºº |
 22:39
And Balaam went with Bela{gr.Balac}, and they came to the cities of streets. |
|
 22:39
And Balaamº
wentººº
withº
Balak,º
and they cameºº
unto Kirjathhuzoth.ºº |
 22:40
And Bela{gr.Balac} offered sheep and calves, and sent to Balaam and to his princes who were with him. |
|
 22:40
And Balakº
offeredºº
oxenº
and sheep,º
and sentºº
to Balaam,º
and to the princesº
thatº
[were] withº
him. |
 22:41
And it was morning; and Bela{gr.Balac} took Balaam, and brought him up to the pillar of Baal, and shewed him thence a part of the people. |
|
 22:41
And it came to passº
on the morrow,º
that Balakº
tookººº
Balaam,º
and brought him upºº
into the high placesº
of Baal,ºº
that thenceºº
he might seeºº
the utmostº
[part] of the people.º |
