 35:1 ¶ And the Lord spoke to Mosheh{gr.Moses} to the west of Moab by Jordan near Jericho, saying,

 35:1 ¶ And Yahwehº spakeºº untoº Mosesº in the plainsº of Moabº byº Jordanº [near] Jericho,º saying,ºº

 35:2 Give orders to the children of Israel, and they shall give to the Levites cities to dwell in from the lot of their possession, and they shall give to the Levites the suburbs of the cities round about them.

 35:2 Commandººº the childrenº of Israel,º that they giveºº unto the Levitesº of the inheritanceºº of their possessionº citiesº to dwell in;ºº and ye shall giveºº [also] unto the Levitesº suburbsº for the citiesº round aboutº them.

 35:3 And the cities shall be for them to dwell in, and their enclosures shall be for their cattle and all their beasts.

 35:3 And the citiesº shall they haveº to dwell in;ºº and the suburbsº of them shall beº for their cattle,º and for their goods,º and for allº their beasts.º

 35:4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outwards two thousand cubits round about.

 35:4 And the suburbsº of the cities,º whichº ye shall giveºº unto the Levites,º [shall reach] from the wallºº of the cityº and outwardº a thousandº cubitsº round about.º

 35:5 And thou shalt measure outside the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits; and your city shall be in the midst of this, and the suburbs of the cities [as described].

 35:5 And ye shall measureºº from withoutºº the cityº onº the eastº sideº two thousandº cubits,º and on the southº sideº two thousandº cubits,º and on the westº sideº two thousandº cubits,º and on the northº sideº two thousandº cubits;º and the cityº [shall be] in the midst:º thisº shall beº to them the suburbsº of the cities.º

 35:6 And ye shall give the cities to the Levites, the six cities of refuge which ye shall give for the slayer to flee thither, and in addition to these, forty-two cities.

 35:6 And amongº the citiesº whichº ye shall giveºº unto the Levitesº [there shall be]º sixº citiesº for refuge,º whichº ye shall appointºº for the manslayer,ºº that he may fleeºº thither:º and toº them ye shall addºº fortyº and twoº cities.º

 35:7 Ye shall give to the Levites in all forty-eight cities, them and their suburbs.

 35:7 [So] allº the citiesº whichº ye shall giveºº to the Levitesº [shall be] fortyº and eightº cities:º them [shall ye give] withº their suburbs.º

 35:8 And as for the cities which ye shall give out of the possession of the children of Israel, from those [that have] much [ye shall give] much, and from those that have less ye shall give less: they shall give of their cities to the Levites each one according to his inheritance which they shall inherit.

 35:8 And the citiesº whichº ye shall giveºº [shall be] of the possessionºº of the childrenº of Israel:º fromºº [them that have] manyº ye shall give many;ºº but fromºº [them that have] fewº ye shall give few:ºº every oneº shall giveºº of his citiesºº unto the Levitesº accordingº toº his inheritanceº whichº he inheriteth.ºº

 35:9 ¶ And the Lord spoke to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, saying,

 35:9 ¶ And Yahwehº spakeºº untoº Moses,º saying,ºº

 35:10 Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, Ye are to cross over Jordan into the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}.

 35:10 Speakºº untoº the childrenº of Israel,º and sayºº untoº them, Whenº yeº be come overººº Jordanº into the landº of Canaan;º

 35:11 And ye shall appoint to yourselves cities: they shall be to you cities of refuge for the slayer to flee to, every one who has killed another unintentionally.

 35:11 Then ye shall appointºº you citiesº to beº citiesº of refugeº for you; that the slayerºº may fleeºº thither,º which killethºº any personº at unawares.º

 35:12 And the cities shall be to you places of refuge from the avenger of blood, and the slayer shall not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.

 35:12 And they shall beº unto you citiesº for refugeº from the avenger;ººº that the manslayerºº dieºº not,º untilº he standºº beforeº the congregationº in judgment.º

 35:13 And the cities which ye shall assign, [even] the six cities, shall be places of refuge for you.

 35:13 And of these citiesº whichº ye shall giveºº sixº citiesº shall ye haveº for refuge.º

 35:14 Ye shall assign three cities on the other side of Jordan, and ye shall assign three cities in the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}.

 35:14 Ye shall giveººº threeº citiesº on this sideºº Jordan,º and threeº citiesº shall ye giveºº in the landº of Canaan,º [which] shall beº citiesº of refuge.º

 35:15 It shall be a place of refuge for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for him that sojourns among you; these cities shall be for a place of refuge, for every one to flee thither who has killed a man unintentionally.

 35:15 Theseº sixº citiesº shall beº a refuge,º [both] for the childrenº of Israel,º and for the stranger,º and for the sojournerº amongº them: that every oneº that killethºº any personº unawaresº may fleeºº thither.º

 35:16 And if he should smite him with an iron instrument, and the man should die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.

 35:16 And ifº he smiteºº him with an instrumentº of iron,º so that he die,ºº heº [is] a murderer:ºº the murdererºº shall surelyºº be put to death.ºº

 35:17 And if he should smite him with a stone [thrown] from his hand, whereby a man may die, and he [thus] die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.

 35:17 And ifº he smiteºº him with throwingº a stone,º wherewithº he may die,ºº and he die,ºº heº [is] a murderer:ºº the murdererºº shall surelyºº be put to death.ºº

 35:18 And if he should smite him with an instrument of wood from his hand, whereby he may die, and he [thus] die, he is a murderer; let the murderer by all means be put to death.

 35:18 Orº [if] he smiteºº him with an handº weaponº of wood,º wherewithº he may die,ºº and he die,ºº heº [is] a murderer:ºº the murdererºº shall surelyºº be put to death.ºº

 35:19 The avenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: whensoever he shall meet him he shall slay him.

 35:19 The revengerºº of bloodº himselfº shall slayººº the murderer:ºº when he meetethºº him, heº shall slayºº him.

 35:20 And if he should thrust him through enmity, or cast any thing upon him from an ambuscade, and the man should die,

 35:20 But ifº he thrustºº him of hatred,º orº hurlºº atº him by laying of wait,º that he die;ºº

 35:21 or if he have smitten him with his hand through anger, and the man should die, let the man that smote him be put to death by all means, he is a murderer: let the murderer by all means be put to death: the avenger of blood shall slay the murderer when he meets him.

 35:21 Orº in enmityº smiteºº him with his hand,º that he die:ºº he that smoteºº [him] shall surelyºº be put to death;ºº [for] heº [is] a murderer:ºº the revengerºº of bloodº shall slayººº the murderer,ºº when he meetethºº him.

 35:22 But if he should thrust him suddenly, not through enmity, or cast any thing upon him, not from an ambuscade,

 35:22 But ifº he thrustºº him suddenlyº withoutº enmity,º orº have castºº uponº him any thingºº withoutº laying of wait,º

 35:23 or [smite him] with any stone, whereby a man may die, unawares, and it should fall upon him, and he should die, but he was not his enemy, nor sought to hurt him;

 35:23 Orº with anyº stone,º wherewithº a man may die,ºº seeingºº [him] not,º and castºº [it] uponº him, that he die,ºº and [was] notº his enemy,ºº neitherº soughtºº his harm:º

 35:24 then the assembly shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood, according to these judgments.

 35:24 Then the congregationº shall judgeºº betweenº the slayerºº and the revengerºº of bloodº according toº theseº judgments:º

 35:25 And the congregation shall rescue the slayer from the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, whither he fled for refuge; and he shall dwell there till the death of the high-priest, whom they anointed with the holy oil.

 35:25 And the congregationº shall deliverººº the slayerºº out of the handºº of the revengerºº of blood,º and the congregationº shall restoreºº him toº the cityº of his refuge,º whitherºº he was fled:ºº and he shall abideºº in it untoº the deathº of the highº priest,º whichº was anointedºº with the holyº oil.º

 35:26 But if the slayer should in any wise go out beyond the bounds of the city whither he fled for refuge,

 35:26 But ifº the slayerºº shall at any timeºº comeºº withoutºº the borderº of the cityº of his refuge,º whitherºº he was fled;ºº

 35:27 and the avenger of blood should find him without the bounds of the city of his refuge, and the avenger of blood should kill the slayer, he is not guilty.

 35:27 And the revengerºº of bloodº findºº him withoutºº the bordersº of the cityº of his refuge,º and the revengerºº of bloodº killººº the slayer;ºº he shall notº be guilty of blood:º

 35:28 For he ought to have remained in the city of refuge till the high-priest died; and after the death of the high-priest the slayer shall return to the land of his possession.

 35:28 Becauseº he should have remainedºº in the cityº of his refugeº untilº the deathº of the highº priest:º but afterº the deathº of the highº priestº the slayerºº shall returnºº intoº the landº of his possession.º

 35:29 And these things shall be to you for an ordinance of judgment throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

 35:29 So theseº [things] shall beº for a statuteº of judgmentº unto you throughout your generationsº in allº your dwellings.º

 35:30 Whoever kills a man, thou shalt slay the murderer on the testimony of witnesses; and one witness shall not testify against a soul that he should die.

 35:30 Whosoº killethºº any person,ºº the murdererºº shall be put to deathºº by the mouthº of witnesses:º but oneº witnessº shall notº testifyºº against any personº [to cause him] to die.ºº

 35:31 And ye shall not accept ransoms for life from a murderer who is worthy of death, for he shall be surely put to death.

 35:31 Moreover ye shall takeºº noº satisfactionº for the lifeº of a murderer,ºº whichº [is] guiltyº of death:ºº butº he shall be surelyºº put to death.ºº

 35:32 Ye shall not accept a ransom [to excuse] his fleeing to the city of refuge, so that he should again dwell in the land, until the death of the high-priest.

 35:32 And ye shall takeºº noº satisfactionº for him that is fledºº toº the cityº of his refuge,º that he should come againºº to dwellºº in the land,º untilº the deathº of the priest.º

 35:33 So shall ye not pollute with murder the land in which ye dwell; for this blood pollutes the land, and the land shall not be purged from the blood shed upon it, but by the blood of him that shed it.

 35:33 So ye shall notº polluteººº the landº whereinº yeº [are]: forº bloodº itº defilethººº the land:º and the landº cannotº be cleansedºº of the bloodº thatº is shedºº therein, butºº by the bloodº of him that shedºº it.

 35:34 And ye shall not defile the land whereon ye dwell, on which I dwell in the midst of you; for I am the Lord dwelling in the midst of the children of Israel.

 35:34 Defileºº notº thereforeº the landº whichº yeº shall inhabit,ºº whereinºº Iº dwell:ºº forº Iº Yahwehº dwellºº amongº the childrenº of Israel.º
