 18:1 ¶ When Yi±rô יִתרוֹ,º the priestº of Miðyän מִדיָן,º Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in law,ºº heardººº of allº thatº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº had doneºº for Möšè מֹשֶׁה,º and for Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº his people,º [and] thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº had broughtºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵלº outººº of Mixrayim מִצרַיִם;ºº

 18:1 ¶ When Yithro, the priest of Midyan, Mosheh's father in law, heard of all that Elohim had done for Mosheh, and for Yisrael his people, [and] that Yahweh had brought Yisrael out of Mitzrayim;

 18:2 Then Yi±rô יִתרוֹ,º Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in law,ºº tookººº Xippörà צִפֹּרָה,º Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº wife,º afterº he had sent her back,º

 18:2 Then Yithro, Mosheh's father in law, took Tzipporah, Mosheh's wife, after he had sent her back,

 18:3 And her twoº sons;º of whichº the nameº of the oneº [was] Gëršôm גֵּרשׁוֹם;ºº forº he said,ºº I have beenº an alienº in a strangeº land:º

 18:3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one [was] Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

 18:4 And the nameº of the otherº [was] ´Élî`ezer אֱלִיעֶזֶר;º forº the ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº of my father,º [said he, was] mine help,º and deliveredºº me from the swordºº of Par`ò פַּרעֹה:º

 18:4 And the name of the other [was] Eliezer; for the Elohim of my father, [said he, was] mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Paroh:

 18:5 And Yi±rô יִתרוֹ,º Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in law,ºº cameºº with his sonsº and his wifeº untoº Möšè מֹשֶׁהº intoº the wilderness,º whereºº heº encampedºº at the mountº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º

 18:5 And Yithro, Mosheh's father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Mosheh into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of Elohim:

 18:6 And he saidºº untoº Möšè מֹשֶׁה,º Iº thy father in lawºº Yi±rô יִתרוֹº am comeºº untoº thee, and thy wife,º and her twoº sonsº withº her.

 18:6 And he said unto Mosheh, I thy father in law Yithro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

 18:7 ¶ And Möšè מֹשֶׁהº went outºº to meetºº his father in law,ºº and did obeisance,ºº and kissedºº him; and they askedºº eachº otherº of [their] welfare;º and they cameºº into the tent.º

 18:7 ¶ And Mosheh went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of [their] welfare; and they came into the tent.

 18:8 And Möšè מֹשֶׁהº toldºº his father in lawººº allº thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº had doneºº unto Par`ò פַּרעֹהº and to the Mixrîm מִצרִיםº forº Yi$rä´ël's יִשׂרָאֵלº sake,º [and]º allº the travailº thatº had comeºº uponº them by the way,º and [how] Yähwè יָהוֶהº deliveredºº them.

 18:8 And Mosheh told his father in law all that Yahweh had done unto Paroh and to the Mitzrim for Yisrael's sake, [and] all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and [how] Yahweh delivered them.

 18:9 And Yi±rô יִתרוֹº rejoicedºº forº allº the goodnessº whichº Yähwè יָהוֶהº had doneºº to Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º whomº he had deliveredºº out of the handºº of the Mixrîm מִצרִים.º

 18:9 And Yithro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Yisrael, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Mitzrim.

 18:10 And Yi±rô יִתרוֹº said,ºº Blessedºº [be] Yähwè יָהוֶה,º whoº hath deliveredºº you out of the handºº of the Mixrîm מִצרִים,º and out of the handºº of Par`ò פַּרעֹה,º whoº hath deliveredººº the peopleº from underºº the handº of the Mixrîm מִצרִים.º

 18:10 And Yithro said, Blessed [be] Yahweh, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Mitzrim, and out of the hand of Paroh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Mitzrim.

 18:11 Nowº I knowºº thatº Yähwè יָהוֶהº [is] greaterº than allºº ´élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º forº in the thingº whereinº they dealt proudlyºº [he was] aboveº them.

 18:11 Now I know that Yahweh [is] greater than all elohim: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly [he was] above them.

 18:12 And Yi±rô יִתרוֹ,º Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in law,ºº tookºº a burnt offeringº and sacrificesº for ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º and ´Ahárön אַהֲרֹןº came,ºº and allº the eldersº of Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º to eatºº breadº withº Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in lawºº beforeº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים.º

 18:12 And Yithro, Mosheh's father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for Elohim: and Aharon came, and all the elders of Yisrael, to eat bread with Mosheh's father in law before Elohim.

 18:13 ¶ And it came to passº on the morrow,ºº that Möšè מֹשֶׁהº satºº to judgeººº the people:º and the peopleº stoodºº byº Möšè מֹשֶׁהº fromº the morningº untoº the evening.º

 18:13 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that Mosheh sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Mosheh from the morning unto the evening.

 18:14 And when Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in lawºº sawººº allº thatº heº didºº to the people,º he said,ºº Whatº [is] thisº thingº thatº thouº doestºº to the people?º whyº sittestºº thouº thyself alone,º and allº the peopleº standºº byº thee fromº morningº untoº even?º

 18:14 And when Mosheh's father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What [is] this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

 18:15 And Möšè מֹשֶׁהº saidºº unto his father in law,ºº Becauseº the peopleº comeºº untoº me to enquireºº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º

 18:15 And Mosheh said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of Elohim:

 18:16 Whenº they haveº a matter,º they comeºº untoº me; and I judgeºº betweenº oneº and another,º and I do make [them] knowººº the statutesº of ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º and his laws.º

 18:16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make [them] know the statutes of Elohim, and his laws.

 18:17 And Möšè's מֹשֶׁהº father in lawºº saidºº untoº him, The thingº thatº thouº doestºº [is] notº good.º

 18:17 And Mosheh's father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest [is] not good.

 18:18 Thou wilt surelyºº wear away,ºº bothº thou,º andº thisº peopleº thatº [is] withº thee: forº this thingº [is] too heavyº forº thee; thou art notº ableºº to performºº it thyself alone.º

 18:18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that [is] with thee: for this thing [is] too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

 18:19 Hearkenºº nowº unto my voice,º I will give thee counsel,ºº and ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº shall beºº withº thee: Beº thouº for the peopleº to ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים-ward,ºº that thouº mayest bringººº the causesº untoº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים:º

 18:19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and Elohim shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to Elohim-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto Elohim:

 18:20 And thou shalt teachººº themº ordinancesº and laws,º and shalt shewºº themº the wayº wherein they must walk,ººº and the workºº thatº they must do.ºº

 18:20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

 18:21 Moreover thouº shalt provideºº out of allºº the peopleº ableº men,ºº such as fearº ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִים,º menºº of truth,º hatingºº covetousness;º and placeºº [such] overº them, [to be] rulersº of thousands,º [and] rulersº of hundreds,º rulersº of fifties,º and rulersº of tens:º

 18:21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear Elohim, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place [such] over them, [to be] rulers of thousands, [and] rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

 18:22 And let them judgeººº the peopleº at allº seasons:º and it shall be,º [that] everyº greatº matterº they shall bringºº untoº thee, but everyº smallº matterº theyº shall judge:ºº so shall it be easierºº forºº thyself, and they shall bearºº [the burden] withº thee.

 18:22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, [that] every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear [the burden] with thee.

 18:23 Ifº thou shalt doººº thisº thing,º and ´Élöhîm אֱלֹהִיםº commandºº thee [so], then thou shalt be ableºº to endure,ºº and allº thisº peopleº shall alsoº goºº toº their placeº in peace.º

 18:23 If thou shalt do this thing, and Elohim command thee [so], then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

 18:24 So Möšè מֹשֶׁהº hearkenedºº to the voiceº of his father in law,ºº and didºº allº thatº he had said.ºº

 18:24 So Mosheh hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

 18:25 And Möšè מֹשֶׁהº choseºº ableº menºº out of allºº Yi$rä´ël יִשׂרָאֵל,º and madeºº them headsº overº the people,º rulersº of thousands,º rulersº of hundreds,º rulersº of fifties,º and rulersº of tens.º

 18:25 And Mosheh chose able men out of all Yisrael, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

 18:26 And they judgedººº the peopleº at allº seasons:º the hardºº causesº they broughtºº untoº Möšè מֹשֶׁה,º but everyº smallº matterºº they judgedºº themselves.º

 18:26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Mosheh, but every small matter they judged themselves.

 18:27 ¶ And Möšè מֹשֶׁהº letº his father in lawºº depart;ºº and he wentºº his wayº intoº his own land.º

 18:27 ¶ And Mosheh let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
