 14:1 ¶ The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought.

 14:1 ¶ The wordº of the LORDº thatº cameº toº Jeremiahº concerningºº the dearth.º

 14:2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish, they sit in black upon the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.

 14:2 Judahº mourneth,ºº and the gatesº thereof languish;ºº they are blackºº unto the ground;º and the cryº of Jerusalemº is gone up.ºº

 14:3 And their nobles send their little ones to the waters: they come to the cisterns, and find no water; they return with their vessels empty; they are put to shame and confounded, and cover their heads.

 14:3 And their noblesº have sentºº their little onesº to the waters:º they cameºº toº the pits,ººº [and] foundºº noº water;º they returnedºº with their vesselsº empty;º they were ashamedºº and confounded,ºº and coveredºº their heads.º

 14:4 Because of the ground which is cracked, for that no rain hath been in the land, the plowmen are put to shame, they cover their heads.

 14:4 Becauseº the groundº is chapt,ºº forº there wasº noº rainº in the earth,º the plowmenº were ashamed,ºº they coveredºº their heads.º

 14:5 Yea, the hind also in the field calveth, and forsaketh [her young], because there is no grass.

 14:5 Yea,º the hindº also calvedºº in the field,º and forsookºº [it], becauseº there wasº noº grass.º

 14:6 And the wild asses stand on the bare heights, they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail, because there is no herbage.

 14:6 And the wild assesº did standºº inº the high places,º they snuffed upºº the windº like dragons;º their eyesº did fail,ºº becauseº [there was] noº grass.º

 14:7 ¶ Though our iniquities testify against us, work thou for thy name's sake, O Jehovah; for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.

 14:7 ¶ O LORD,º thoughº our iniquitiesº testifyºº against us, doºº thou [it] for thy name'sº sake:ºº forº our backslidingsº are many;ºº we have sinnedºº against thee.

 14:8 O thou hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof in the time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a sojourner in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?

 14:8 O the hopeº of Israel,º the saviourºº thereof in timeº of trouble,º whyº shouldest thou beº as a strangerº in the land,º and as a wayfaring manºº [that] turneth asideºº to tarryº for a night?ºº

 14:9 Why shouldest thou be as a man affrighted, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O Jehovah, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

 14:9 Whyº shouldest thou beº as a manº astonied,ºº as a mighty manº [that] cannotººº save?ºº yet thou,º O LORD,º [art] in the midstº of us, and we are calledºº by thy name;º leaveººº us not.º

 14:10 ¶ Thus saith Jehovah unto this people, Even so have they loved to wander; they have not refrained their feet: therefore Jehovah doth not accept them; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.

 14:10 ¶ Thusº saithºº the LORDº unto thisº people,º Thusº have they lovedºº to wander,ºº they have notº refrainedºº their feet,º therefore the LORDº doth notº acceptºº them; he will nowº rememberºº their iniquity,º and visitºº their sins.º

 14:11 And Jehovah said unto me, Pray not for this people for [their] good.

 14:11 Then saidºº the LORDº untoº me, Prayºº notº forº thisº peopleº for [their] good.º

 14:12 When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt-offering and meal-offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.

 14:12 Whenº they fast,ºº I will notº hearººº their cry;º and whenº they offerºº burnt offeringº and an oblation,º I will notº acceptºº them: butº Iº will consumeºº them by the sword,º and by the famine,º and by the pestilence.º

 14:13 ¶ Then said I, Ah, Lord Jehovah! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.

 14:13 ¶ Then saidºº I, Ah,º Lordº GOD!º behold,º the prophetsº sayºº unto them, Ye shall notº seeºº the sword,º neitherº shall ye haveº famine;º butº I will giveºº you assuredº peaceº in thisº place.º

 14:14 Then Jehovah said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name; I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake I unto them: they prophesy unto you a lying vision, and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their own heart.

 14:14 Then the LORDº saidºº untoº me, The prophetsº prophesyºº liesº in my name:º I sentºº them not,º neitherº have I commandedºº them, neitherº spakeºº untoº them: theyº prophesyºº unto you a falseº visionº and divination,º and a thing of nought,ººº and the deceitº of their heart.º

 14:15 Therefore thus saith Jehovah concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

 14:15 Thereforeº thusº saithºº the LORDº concerningº the prophetsº that prophesyºº in my name,º and Iº sentºº them not,º yet theyº say,ºº Swordº and famineº shall notº beº in thisº land;º By swordº and famineº shall thoseº prophetsº be consumed.ºº

 14:16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them -- them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.

 14:16 And the peopleº to whomº theyº prophesyºº shall beº cast outºº in the streetsº of Jerusalemº becauseºº of the famineº and the sword;º and they shall have noneº to buryºº them,º them,º their wives,º nor their sons,º nor their daughters:º for I will pourººº their wickednessº uponº them.

 14:17 ¶ And thou shalt say this word unto them, Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.

 14:17 ¶ Therefore thou shalt sayººº thisº wordº untoº them; Let mine eyesº run downºº with tearsº nightº and day,º and let them notº cease:ºº forº the virginº daughterº of my peopleº is brokenºº with a greatº breach,º with a veryº grievousºº blow.º

 14:18 If I go forth into the field, then, behold, the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then, behold, they that are sick with famine! for both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.

 14:18 Ifº I go forthºº into the field,º then beholdº the slainº with the sword!º and ifº I enterºº into the city,º then beholdº them that are sickº with famine!º yea,º bothº the prophetº andº the priestº go aboutºº intoº a landº that they knowºº not.º

 14:19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul loathed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and, behold, dismay!

 14:19 Hast thou utterlyºº rejectedººº Judah?º hath thy soulº lothedºº Zion?º whyº hast thou smittenºº us, and [there is] noº healingº for us? we lookedºº for peace,º and [there is] noº good;º and for the timeº of healing,º and beholdº trouble!º

 14:20 We acknowledge, O Jehovah, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against thee.

 14:20 We acknowledge,ºº O LORD,º our wickedness,º [and] the iniquityº of our fathers:º forº we have sinnedºº against thee.

 14:21 Do not abhor [us], for thy name's sake; do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

 14:21 Do notº abhorºº [us], for thy name'sº sake,ºº do notº disgraceºº the throneº of thy glory:º remember,ºº breakºº notº thy covenantº withº us.

 14:22 Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O Jehovah our God? therefore we will wait for thee; for thou hast made all these things.

 14:22 Are thereº [any] among the vanitiesº of the Gentilesº that can cause rain?ºº orº can the heavensº giveºº showers?º [art] notº thouº he,º O LORDº our God?º therefore we will waitºº upon thee: forº thouº hast madeººº allº theseº [things].
