 49:1 ¶ Of the children of Ammon. Thus saith Jehovah: Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth Malcam possess Gad, and his people dwell in the cities thereof?

 49:1 ¶ Concerning the Ammonites,ººº thusº saithºº the LORD;º Hath Israelº noº sons?º hath he noº heir?ºº whyº [then] doth their kingº inheritººº Gad,º and his peopleº dwellºº in his cities?º

 49:2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard against Rabbah of the children of Ammon; and it shall become a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel possess them that did possess him, saith Jehovah.

 49:2 Therefore,º behold,º the daysº come,ºº saithºº the LORD,º that I will cause an alarmº of warº to be heardºº inº Rabbahº of the Ammonites;ºº and it shall beº a desolateº heap,º and her daughtersº shall be burnedºº with fire:º then shall Israelº be heirºº unto them that wereº his heirs,ºº saithºº the LORD.º

 49:3 Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste; cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth: lament, and run to and fro among the fences; for Malcam shall go into captivity, his priests and his princes together.

 49:3 Howl,ºº O Heshbon,º forº Aiº is spoiled:ºº cry,ºº ye daughtersº of Rabbah,º girdºº you with sackcloth;º lament,ºº and run to and froºº by the hedges;º forº their kingº shall goººº into captivity,º [and] his priestsº and his princesº together.º

 49:4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, [saying], Who shall come unto me?

 49:4 Whereforeº gloriestºº thou in the valleys,º thy flowingºº valley,º O backslidingº daughter?º that trustedºº in her treasures,º [saying], Whoº shall comeºº untoº me?

 49:5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, from all that are round about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth, and there shall be none to gather together the fugitives.

 49:5 Behold,º I will bringºº a fearº uponº thee, saithºº the Lordº GODº of hosts,º from allºº those that be aboutº thee; and ye shall be driven outºº every manº right forth;º and noneº shall gather upºº him that wandereth.ºº

 49:6 But afterward I will bring back the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith Jehovah.

 49:6 And afterwardºº I will bring againººº the captivityº of the childrenº of Ammon,º saithºº the LORD.º

 49:7 ¶ Of Edom. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

 49:7 ¶ Concerning Edom,º thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts;º [Is] wisdomº noº moreº in Teman?º is counselº perishedºº from the prudent?ººº is their wisdomº vanished?ºº

 49:8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I shall visit him.

 49:8 Fleeºº ye, turn back,ºº dwellºº deep,ºº O inhabitantsºº of Dedan;º forº I will bringºº the calamityº of Esauº uponº him, the timeº [that] I will visitºº him.

 49:9 If grape-gatherers came to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, would they not destroy till they had enough?

 49:9 Ifº grapegatherersºº comeºº to thee, would they notº leaveºº [some] gleaning grapes?º ifº thievesº by night,º they will destroyºº till they have enough.º

 49:10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is destroyed, and his brethren, and his neighbors; and he is not.

 49:10 Butº Iº have madeº Esauº bare,ºº I have uncoveredººº his secret places,º and he shall notº be ableºº to hideºº himself:º his seedº is spoiled,ºº and his brethren,º and his neighbours,º and he [is] not.º

 49:11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

 49:11 Leaveºº thy fatherless children,º Iº will preserve [them] alive;ºº and let thy widowsº trustºº inº me.

 49:12 For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, they to whom it pertained not to drink of the cup shall assuredly drink; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink.

 49:12 Forº thusº saithºº the LORD;º Behold,º they whoseº judgmentº [was] notº to drinkºº of the cupº have assuredlyºº drunken;ºº and [art] thouº heº [that] shall altogetherºº go unpunished?ºº thou shalt notº go unpunished,ºº butº thou shalt surelyºº drinkºº [of it].

 49:13 For I have sworn by myself, saith Jehovah, that Bozrah shall become an astonishment, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.

 49:13 Forº I have swornºº by myself, saithºº the LORD,º thatº Bozrahº shall becomeº a desolation,º a reproach,º a waste,º and a curse;º and allº the citiesº thereof shall beº perpetualº wastes.º

 49:14 I have heard tidings from Jehovah, and an ambassador is sent among the nations, [saying], Gather yourselves together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.

 49:14 I have heardºº a rumourº fromºº the LORD,º and an ambassadorº is sentºº unto the heathen,º [saying], Gather ye together,ºº and comeºº againstº her, and rise upºº to the battle.º

 49:15 For, behold, I have made thee small among the nations, and despised among men.

 49:15 For,º lo,º I will makeºº thee smallº among the heathen,º [and] despisedºº among men.º

 49:16 As for thy terribleness, the pride of thy heart hath deceived thee, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith Jehovah.

 49:16 Thy terriblenessº hath deceivedºº thee, [and] the prideº of thine heart,º O thou that dwellestºº in the cleftsº of the rock,º that holdestºº the heightº of the hill:º thoughº thou shouldest make thy nestº as highºº as the eagle,º I will bring thee downºº from thence,ºº saithºº the LORD.º

 49:17 And Edom shall become an astonishment: every one that passeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.

 49:17 Also Edomº shall beº a desolation:º every oneº that goethºº byº it shall be astonished,ºº and shall hissºº atº allº the plaguesº thereof.

 49:18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities thereof, saith Jehovah, no man shall dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.

 49:18 As in the overthrowº of Sodomº and Gomorrahº and the neighbourº [cities] thereof, saithºº the LORD,º noº manº shall abideºº there,º neitherº shall a sonº of manº dwellºº in it.

 49:19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?

 49:19 Behold,º he shall come upºº like a lionº from the swellingºº of Jordanº againstº the habitationº of the strong:º butº I will suddenlyºº make him run awayºº fromºº her: and whoº [is] a chosenºº [man, that] I may appointºº overº her? forº whoº [is] like me?º and whoº will appointº me the time?ºº and whoº [is] thatº shepherdºº thatº will standºº beforeº me?

 49:20 Therefore hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely they shall drag them away, [even] the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them.

 49:20 Thereforeº hearºº the counselº of the LORD,º thatº he hath takenºº againstº Edom;º and his purposes,º thatº he hath purposedºº againstº the inhabitantsºº of Teman:º Surelyºº the leastº of the flockº shall draw them out:ºº surelyºº he shall make their habitationsº desolateºº withº them.

 49:21 The earth trembleth at the noise of their fall; there is a cry, the noise whereof is heard in the Red Sea.

 49:21 The earthº is movedºº at the noiseºº of their fall,ºº at the cryº the noiseº thereof was heardºº in the Redº sea.º

 49:22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread out his wings against Bozrah: and the heart of the mighty men of Edom at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

 49:22 Behold,º he shall come upºº and flyºº as the eagle,º and spreadºº his wingsº overº Bozrah:º and at thatº dayº shall the heartº of the mighty menº of Edomº beº as the heartº of a womanº in her pangs.ºº

 49:23 ¶ Of Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad; for they have heard evil tidings, they are melted away: there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.

 49:23 ¶ Concerning Damascus.º Hamathº is confounded,ºº and Arpad:º forº they have heardºº evilº tidings:º they are fainthearted;ºº [there is] sorrowº on the sea;º it cannotººº be quiet.ºº

 49:24 Damascus is waxed feeble, she turneth herself to flee, and trembling hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.

 49:24 Damascusº is waxed feeble,ºº [and] turnethºº herselfº to flee,ºº and fearº hath seizedºº on [her]: anguishº and sorrowsº have takenºº her, as a woman in travail.ºº

 49:25 How is the city of praise not forsaken, the city of my joy?

 49:25 Howº is the cityº of praiseº notº left,ºº the cityº of my joy!º

 49:26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be brought to silence in that day, saith Jehovah of hosts.

 49:26 Thereforeº her young menº shall fallºº in her streets,º and allº the menºº of warº shall be cut offºº in thatº day,º saithºº the LORDº of hosts.º

 49:27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the palaces of Ben-hadad.

 49:27 And I will kindleºº a fireº in the wallº of Damascus,º and it shall consumeºº the palacesº of Benhadad.º

 49:28 ¶ Of Kedar, and of the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote. Thus saith Jehovah: Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and destroy the children of the east.

 49:28 ¶ Concerning Kedar,º and concerning the kingdomsº of Hazor,º whichº Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº shall smite,ºº thusº saithºº the LORD;º Ariseºº ye, go upºº toº Kedar,º and spoilººº the menº of the east.º

 49:29 Their tents and their flocks shall they take; they shall carry away for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Terror on every side!

 49:29 Their tentsº and their flocksº shall they take away:ºº they shall takeºº to themselves their curtains,º and allº their vessels,º and their camels;º and they shall cryºº untoº them, Fearº [is] on every side.ºº

 49:30 ¶ Flee ye, wander far off, dwell in the depths, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith Jehovah; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.

 49:30 ¶ Flee,ºº getºº you far off,º dwellºº deep,ºº O ye inhabitantsºº of Hazor,º saithºº the LORD;º forº Nebuchadrezzarº kingº of Babylonº hath takenº counselººº againstº you, and hath conceivedºº a purposeº againstº you.

 49:31 Arise, get you up unto a nation that is at ease, that dwelleth without care, saith Jehovah; that have neither gates nor bars, that dwell alone.

 49:31 Arise,ºº get you upºº untoº the wealthyº nation,º that dwellethºº without care,º saithºº the LORD,º which have neitherº gatesº norº bars,º [which] dwellºº alone.º

 49:32 And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter unto all winds them that have the corners [of their hair] cut off; and I will bring their calamity from every side of them, saith Jehovah.

 49:32 And their camelsº shall beº a booty,º and the multitudeº of their cattleº a spoil:º and I will scatterºº into allº windsº them [that are] in the utmostºº corners;º and I will bringººº their calamityº from allºº sidesº thereof, saithºº the LORD.º

 49:33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling-place of jackals, a desolation for ever: no man shall dwell there, neither shall any son of man sojourn therein.

 49:33 And Hazorº shall beº a dwellingº for dragons,º [and] a desolationº forº ever:ºº there shall noº manº abideºº there,º norº [any] sonº of manº dwellºº in it.

 49:34 ¶ The word of Jehovah that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,

 49:34 ¶ The wordº of the LORDº thatº cameº toº Jeremiahº the prophetº againstº Elamº in the beginningº of the reignº of Zedekiahº kingº of Judah,º saying,ºº

 49:35 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.

 49:35 Thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts;º Behold,º I will breakººº the bowº of Elam,º the chiefº of their might.º

 49:36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.

 49:36 And uponº Elamº will I bringºº the fourº windsº from the fourºº quartersº of heaven,º and will scatterºº them toward allº thoseº winds;º and there shall beº noº nationº whitherºº the outcastsºº of Elamººº shall notº come.ºº

 49:37 And I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life; and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith Jehovah; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them;

 49:37 For I will causeº Elamº to be dismayedºº beforeº their enemies,ºº and beforeº them that seekºº their life:º and I will bringºº evilº uponº them, [even]º my fierceº anger,º saithºº the LORD;º and I will sendººº the swordº afterº them, tillº I have consumedºº them:

 49:38 and I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence king and princes, saith Jehovah.

 49:38 And I will setºº my throneº in Elam,º and will destroyºº from thenceºº the kingº and the princes,º saithºº the LORD.º

 49:39 ¶ But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring back the captivity of Elam, saith Jehovah.

 49:39 ¶ But it shall come to passº in the latterº days,º [that] I will bring againººººº the captivityºº of Elam,º saithºº the LORD.º
