 48:1 ¶ Of Moab. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe unto Nebo! for it is laid waste; Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken; Misgab is put to shame and broken down.

 48:1 ¶ Against Moabº thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Woeº untoº Nebo!º forº it is spoiled:ºº Kiriathaimº is confoundedºº [and] taken:ºº Misgabº is confoundedºº and dismayed.ºº

 48:2 The praise of Moab is no more; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: Come, and let us cut her off from being a nation. Thou also, O Madmen, shalt be brought to silence: the sword shall pursue thee.

 48:2 [There shall be] noº moreº praiseº of Moab:º in Heshbonº they have devisedºº evilº againstº it; come,ººº and let us cut it offºº from [being] a nation.ºº Alsoº thou shalt be cut down,ºº O Madmen;º the swordº shall pursueºººº thee.º

 48:3 The sound of a cry from Horonaim, desolation and great destruction!

 48:3 A voiceº of cryingº [shall be] from Horonaim,ºº spoilingº and greatº destruction.º

 48:4 Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.

 48:4 Moabº is destroyed;ºº her little onesº have caused a cryº to be heard.ºº

 48:5 For by the ascent of Luhith with continual weeping shall they go up; for at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction.

 48:5 Forº in the going upº of Luhithº continualº weepingº shall go up;ºº forº in the going downº of Horonaimº the enemiesº have heardºº a cryº of destruction.º

 48:6 Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.

 48:6 Flee,ºº saveºº your lives,º and beºº like the heathº in the wilderness.º

 48:7 ¶ For, because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou also shalt be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity, his priests and his princes together.

 48:7 ¶ Forº becauseº thou hast trustedºº in thy worksº and in thy treasures,º thouº shalt alsoº be taken:ºº and Chemoshº shall go forthºº into captivityº [with] his priestsº and his princesº together.º

 48:8 And the destroyer shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape; the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed; as Jehovah hath spoken.

 48:8 And the spoilerºº shall comeºº uponº everyº city,º and noº cityº shall escape:ºº the valleyº also shall perish,ºº and the plainº shall be destroyed,ºº asº the LORDº hath spoken.ºº

 48:9 Give wings unto Moab, that she may fly and get her away: and her cities shall become a desolation, without any to dwell therein.

 48:9 Giveºº wingsº unto Moab,º thatº it may fleeºº and get away:ºº for the citiesº thereof shall beº desolate,º without anyºº to dwellºº therein.º

 48:10 Cursed be he that doeth the work of Jehovah negligently; and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.

 48:10 Cursedºº [be] he that doethºº the workº of the LORDº deceitfully,º and cursedºº [be] he that keepeth backºº his swordº from blood.ºº

 48:11 ¶ Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remaineth in him, and his scent is not changed.

 48:11 ¶ Moabº hath been at easeºº from his youth,ºº and heº hath settledºº onº his lees,º and hath notº been emptiedºº from vesselºº toº vessel,º neitherº hath he goneºº into captivity:º thereforeºº his tasteº remainedºº in him, and his scentº is notº changed.ºº

 48:12 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will send unto him them that pour off, and they shall pour him off; and they shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles in pieces.

 48:12 Therefore,º behold,º the daysº come,ºº saithºº the LORD,º that I will sendºº unto him wanderers,ºº that shall cause him to wander,ºº and shall emptyºº his vessels,º and breakºº their bottles.º

 48:13 And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth-el their confidence.

 48:13 And Moabº shall be ashamedºº of Chemosh,ºº asº the houseº of Israelº was ashamedºº of Bethelºº their confidence.º

 48:14 ¶ How say ye, We are mighty men, and valiant men for the war?

 48:14 ¶ Howº sayºº ye, Weº [are] mightyº and strongº menºº for the war?º

 48:15 Moab is laid waste, and they are gone up into his cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is Jehovah of hosts.

 48:15 Moabº is spoiled,ºº and gone upºº [out of] her cities,º and his chosenº young menº are gone downºº to the slaughter,º saithºº the King,º whose nameº [is] the LORDº of hosts.º

 48:16 The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.

 48:16 The calamityº of Moabº [is] nearº to come,ºº and his afflictionº hastethºº fast.º

 48:17 All ye that are round about him, bemoan him, and all ye that know his name; say, How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod!

 48:17 Allº ye that are aboutº him, bemoanºº him; and allº ye that knowºº his name,º say,ºº Howº is the strongº staffº broken,ºº [and] the beautifulº rod!º

 48:18 O thou daughter that dwellest in Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the destroyer of Moab is come up against thee, he hath destroyed thy strongholds.

 48:18 Thou daughterº that dost inhabitºº Dibon,º come downºº from [thy] glory,ºº and sitºº in thirst;º forº the spoilerºº of Moabº shall comeºº upon thee, [and] he shall destroyºº thy strong holds.º

 48:19 O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and watch: ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth; say, What hath been done?

 48:19 O inhabitantºº of Aroer,º standºº byº the way,º and espy;ºº askºº him that fleeth,ºº and her that escapeth,ºº [and] say,ºº Whatº isº done?ºº

 48:20 Moab is put to shame; for it is broken down: wail and cry; tell ye it by the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.

 48:20 Moabº is confounded;ºº forº it is broken down:ºº howlºº and cry;ºº tellºº ye it in Arnon,º thatº Moabº is spoiled,ºº

 48:21 And judgment is come upon the plain country, upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath,

 48:21 And judgmentº is comeºº uponº the plainº country;º uponº Holon,º and uponº Jahazah,º and uponº Mephaath,º

 48:22 and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim,

 48:22 And uponº Dibon,º and uponº Nebo,º and uponº Bethdiblathaim,º

 48:23 and upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon,

 48:23 And uponº Kiriathaim,º and uponº Bethgamul,º and uponº Bethmeon,º

 48:24 and upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.

 48:24 And uponº Kerioth,º and uponº Bozrah,º and uponº allº the citiesº of the landº of Moab,º farº or near.º

 48:25 The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith Jehovah.

 48:25 The hornº of Moabº is cut off,ºº and his armº is broken,ºº saithºº the LORD.º

 48:26 ¶ Make ye him drunken; for he magnified himself against Jehovah: and Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.

 48:26 ¶ Make ye him drunken:ºº forº he magnifiedºº [himself] againstº the LORD:º Moabº also shall wallowºº in his vomit,º and heº alsoº shall beº in derision.º

 48:27 For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for as often as thou speakest of him, thou waggest the head.

 48:27 Forº wasº notº Israelº a derisionº unto thee? was he foundºº among thieves?º forº sinceºº thou spakestº of him, thou skippedstºº for joy.º

 48:28 O ye inhabitants of Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock; and be like the dove that maketh her nest over the mouth of the abyss.

 48:28 O ye that dwellºº in Moab,º leaveºº the cities,º and dwellºº in the rock,º and beº like the doveº [that] maketh her nestºº in the sidesº of the hole'sº mouth.º

 48:29 We have heard of the pride of Moab, [that] he is very proud; his loftiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, and the haughtiness of his heart.

 48:29 We have heardºº the prideº of Moab,º (he is exceedingº proud)º his loftiness,º and his arrogancy,ºº and his pride,ºº and the haughtinessº of his heart.º

 48:30 I know his wrath, saith Jehovah, that it is nought; his boastings have wrought nothing.

 48:30 Iº knowºº his wrath,º saithºº the LORD;º but [it shall] notº [be] so;º his liesº shall notº soº effectºº [it].

 48:31 Therefore will I wail for Moab; yea, I will cry out for all Moab: for the men of Kir-heres shall they mourn.

 48:31 Thereforeºº will I howlºº forº Moab,º and I will cry outºº for allº Moab;º [mine heart] shall mournºº forº the menºº of Kirheres.º

 48:32 With more than the weeping of Jazer will I weep for thee, O vine of Sibmah: thy branches passed over the sea, they reached even to the sea of Jazer: upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage the destroyer is fallen.

 48:32 O vineº of Sibmah,º I will weepºº for thee with the weepingºº of Jazer:º thy plantsº are gone overºº the sea,º they reachºº [even] toº the seaº of Jazer:º the spoilerºº is fallenºº uponº thy summer fruitsº and uponº thy vintage.º

 48:33 And gladness and joy is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to cease from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; the shouting shall be no shouting.

 48:33 And joyº and gladnessº is takenºº from the plentiful field,ºº and from the landºº of Moab;º and I have caused wineº to failºº from the winepresses:ºº noneº shall treadºº with shouting;º [their] shoutingº [shall be] noº shouting.º

 48:34 From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, even unto Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, to Eglath-shelishiyah: for the waters of Nimrim also shall become desolate.

 48:34 From the cryºº of Heshbonº [even] untoº Elealeh,º [and even] untoº Jahaz,º have they utteredºº their voice,º from Zoarºº [even] untoº Horonaim,º [as] an heiferº of three years old:º forº the watersº alsoº of Nimrimº shall beº desolate.º

 48:35 Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith Jehovah, him that offereth in the high place, and him that burneth incense to his gods.

 48:35 Moreover I will cause to ceaseºº in Moab,º saithºº the LORD,º him that offerethºº in the high places,º and him that burneth incenseºº to his gods.º

 48:36 Therefore my heart soundeth for Moab like pipes, and my heart soundeth like pipes for the men of Kir-heres: therefore the abundance that he hath gotten is perished.

 48:36 Thereforeºº mine heartº shall soundºº for Moabº like pipes,º and mine heartº shall soundºº like pipesº forº the menºº of Kirheres:º becauseºº the richesº [that] he hath gottenºº are perished.ºº

 48:37 For every head is bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands are cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.

 48:37 Forº everyº headº [shall be] bald,º and everyº beardº clipped:ºº uponº allº the handsº [shall be] cuttings,ºº and uponº the loinsº sackcloth.º

 48:38 On all the housetops of Moab and in the streets thereof there is lamentation every where; for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein none delighteth, saith Jehovah.

 48:38 [There shall be] lamentationº generallyº uponº allº the housetopsº of Moab,º and in the streetsº thereof: forº I have brokenººº Moabº like a vesselº wherein [is] noº pleasure,º saithºº the LORD.º

 48:39 How is it broken down! [how] do they wail! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab become a derision and a terror to all that are round about him.

 48:39 They shall howl,ºº [saying], Howº is it broken down!ºº howº hath Moabº turnedºº the backº with shame!ºº so shall Moabº beº a derisionº and a dismayingº to allº them aboutº him.

 48:40 For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread out his wings against Moab.

 48:40 Forº thusº saithºº the LORD;º Behold,º he shall flyºº as an eagle,º and shall spreadºº his wingsº overº Moab.º

 48:41 Kerioth is taken, and the strongholds are seized, and the heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

 48:41 Keriothº is taken,ºº and the strong holdsº are surprised,ºº and the mighty men'sº heartsº in Moabº at thatº dayº shall beº as the heartº of a womanº in her pangs.ºº

 48:42 And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against Jehovah.

 48:42 And Moabº shall be destroyedºº from [being] a people,ºº becauseº he hath magnifiedºº [himself] againstº the LORD.º

 48:43 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith Jehovah.

 48:43 Fear,º and the pit,º and the snare,º [shall be] uponº thee, O inhabitantºº of Moab,º saithºº the LORD.º

 48:44 He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon him, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah.

 48:44 He that fleethºººº fromºº the fearº shall fallºº intoº the pit;º and he that getteth upºº out ofº the pitº shall be takenºº in the snare:º forº I will bringºº uponº it, [even] uponº Moab,º the yearº of their visitation,º saithºº the LORD.º

 48:45 They that fled stand without strength under the shadow of Heshbon; for a fire is gone forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and hath devoured the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.

 48:45 They that fledºº stoodºº under the shadowº of Heshbonº because of the force:ºº butº a fireº shall come forthºº out of Heshbon,ºº and a flameº from the midstºº of Sihon,º and shall devourºº the cornerº of Moab,º and the crown of the headº of the tumultuousº ones.º

 48:46 Woe unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh is undone; for thy sons are taken away captive, and thy daughters into captivity.

 48:46 Woeº be unto thee, O Moab!º the peopleº of Chemoshº perisheth:ºº forº thy sonsº are takenºº captives,º and thy daughtersº captives.º

 48:47 ¶ Yet will I bring back the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith Jehovah. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.

 48:47 ¶ Yet will I bring againºº the captivityº of Moabº in the latterº days,º saithºº the LORD.º Thusº farºº [is] the judgmentº of Moab.º
