 38:1 ¶ And Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spake unto all the people, saying,

 38:1 ¶ Then Shephatiahº the sonº of Mattan,º and Gedaliahº the sonº of Pashur,º and Jucalº the sonº of Shelemiah,º and Pashurº the sonº of Malchiah,º heardººº the wordsº thatº Jeremiahº had spokenºº untoº allº the people,º saying,ºº

 38:2 Thus saith Jehovah, He that abideth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be unto him for a prey, and he shall live.

 38:2 Thusº saithºº the LORD,º He that remainethºº in thisº cityº shall dieºº by the sword,º by the famine,º and by the pestilence:º but he that goeth forthºº toº the Chaldeansº shall live;ºº for he shall haveº his lifeº for a prey,º and shall live.ººººº

 38:3 Thus saith Jehovah, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

 38:3 Thusº saithºº the LORD,º Thisº cityº shall surelyºº be givenºº into the handº of the kingº of Babylon'sº army,º which shall takeºº it.

 38:4 Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

 38:4 Therefore the princesº saidºº untoº the king,º We beseech thee,º letº thisº manº be put to death:ºº forº thusºº heº weakenethººº the handsº of the menºº of warº that remainºº in thisº city,º and the handsº of allº the people,º in speakingºº suchº wordsº untoº them: forº thisº manº seekethºº notº the welfareº of thisº people,º butºº the hurt.º

 38:5 And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he that can do anything against you.

 38:5 Then Zedekiahº the kingº said,ºº Behold,º heº [is] in your hand:º forº the kingº [is] notº [he that] canºº doº [any] thingº against you.

 38:6 Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

 38:6 Then tookºº theyº Jeremiah,º and castºº him intoº the dungeonº of Malchiahº the sonº of Hammelech,ºº thatº [was] in the courtº of the prison:º and they let downººº Jeremiahº with cords.º And in the dungeonº [there was] noº water,º butºº mire:º so Jeremiahº sunkºº in the mire.º

 38:7 ¶ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin,)

 38:7 ¶ Now when Ebedmelechº the Ethiopian,º oneº of the eunuchsº whichº was in the king'sº house,º heardºº thatº they had putººº Jeremiahº inº the dungeon;º the kingº then sittingºº in the gateº of Benjamin;º

 38:8 Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying,

 38:8 Ebedmelechº went forthºº out of the king'sº house,ºº and spakeºº toº the king,º saying,ºº

 38:9 My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.

 38:9 My lordº the king,º theseº menºº have done evilºº inº allº thatº they have doneºº to Jeremiahº the prophet,ºº whomº they have castºº intoº the dungeon;º and he is like to dieºº forºº hungerº in the placeº whereº he is: forº [there is] noº moreº breadº in the city.º

 38:10 Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

 38:10 Then the kingº commandedººº Ebedmelechº the Ethiopian,º saying,ºº Takeºº from henceºº thirtyº menºº withº thee,º and take upººº Jeremiahº the prophetº out ofº the dungeon,º beforeº he die.ºº

 38:11 So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

 38:11 So Ebedmelechº tookººº the menºº withº him,º and wentºº intoº the houseº of the kingº underºº the treasury,º and tookºº thenceºº oldº cast cloutsº and oldº rotten rags,º and let them downºº by cordsº intoº the dungeonº toº Jeremiah.º

 38:12 And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

 38:12 And Ebedmelechº the Ethiopianº saidºº untoº Jeremiah,º Putºº nowº [these] oldº cast cloutsº and rotten ragsº underº thine armholesºº underºº the cords.º And Jeremiahº didºº so.º

 38:13 So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

 38:13 So they drew upººº Jeremiahº with cords,º and took him upººº out ofº the dungeon:º and Jeremiahº remainedºº in the courtº of the prison.º

 38:14 ¶ Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of Jehovah: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

 38:14 ¶ Then Zedekiahº the kingº sent,ºº and tookººº Jeremiahº the prophetº untoº him intoº the thirdº entryº thatº [is] in the houseº of the LORD:º and the kingº saidºº untoº Jeremiah,º Iº will askºº thee a thing;º hideºº nothingºº fromº me.

 38:15 Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, thou wilt not hearken unto me.

 38:15 Then Jeremiahº saidºº untoº Zedekiah,º Ifº I declareºº [it] unto thee, wilt thou notº surelyºº put me to death?ºº and ifº I give thee counsel,ºº wilt thou notº hearkenºº untoº me?

 38:16 So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As Jehovah liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

 38:16 So Zedekiahº the kingº swareºº secretlyº untoº Jeremiah,º saying,ºº [As] the LORDº liveth,ºº thatº madeºº usº thisº soul,º I will notº put thee to death,ºº neitherº will I giveºº thee into the handº of theseº menºº thatº seekººº thy life.º

 38:17 Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If thou wilt go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house.

 38:17 Then saidºº Jeremiahº untoº Zedekiah,º Thusº saithºº the LORD,º the Godº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Ifº thou wilt assuredlyºº go forthºº untoº the kingº of Babylon'sº princes,º then thy soulº shall live,ºº and thisº cityº shall notº be burnedºº with fire;º and thouº shalt live,ºº and thine house:º

 38:18 But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.

 38:18 But ifº thou wilt notº go forthºº toº the kingº of Babylon'sº princes,º then shall thisº cityº be givenºº into the handº of the Chaldeans,º and they shall burnºº it with fire,º and thouº shalt notº escapeº outºº of their hand.ºº

 38:19 And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

 38:19 And Zedekiahº the kingº saidºº untoº Jeremiah,º Iº am afraidºº ofºº the Jewsº thatº are fallenºº toº the Chaldeans,º lestº they deliverºº me into their hand,º and they mockºº me.

 38:20 But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of Jehovah, in that which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well with thee, and thy soul shall live.

 38:20 But Jeremiahº said,ºº They shall notº deliverºº [thee]. Obey,ºº I beseech thee,º the voiceº of the LORD,º whichº Iº speakºº untoº thee: so it shall be wellºº unto thee, and thy soulº shall live.ºº

 38:21 But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that Jehovah hath showed me:

 38:21 But ifº thouº refuseº to go forth,ºº thisº [is] the wordº thatº the LORDº hath shewedºº me:

 38:22 behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy familiar friends have set thee on, and have prevailed over thee: [now that] thy feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

 38:22 And, behold,º allº the womenº thatº are leftºº in the kingº of Judah'sº houseº [shall be] brought forthºº toº the kingº of Babylon'sº princes,º and thoseº [women] shall say,ºº Thy friendsººº have setº thee on,ºº and have prevailedºº against thee: thy feetº are sunkºº in the mire,º [and] they are turned awayºº back.º

 38:23 And they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans; and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

 38:23 So they shall bring outºº allº thy wivesº and thy childrenº toº the Chaldeans:º and thouº shalt notº escapeº outºº of their hand,ºº butº shalt be takenºº by the handº of the kingº of Babylon:º and thou shalt cause thisº cityº to be burnedºº with fire.º

 38:24 ¶ Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

 38:24 ¶ Then saidºº Zedekiahº untoº Jeremiah,º Let noº manº knowºº of theseº words,º and thou shalt notº die.ºº

 38:25 But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king; hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:

 38:25 But ifº the princesº hearºº thatº I have talkedºº withº thee, and they comeºº untoº thee, and sayºº untoº thee, Declareºº unto us nowº whatº thou hast saidºº untoº the king,º hideºº it notº fromº us, and we will notº put thee to death;ºº also whatº the kingº saidºº untoº thee:

 38:26 then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

 38:26 Then thou shalt sayºº untoº them, Iº presentedºº my supplicationº beforeº the king,º that he would notº cause me to returnºº to Jonathan'sºº house,º to dieºº there.º

 38:27 Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

 38:27 Then cameºº allº the princesº untoº Jeremiah,º and askedºº him: and he toldºº them according to allº theseº wordsº thatº the kingº had commanded.ºº So they left off speakingºº withº him; forº the matterº was notº perceived.ºº

 38:28 So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

 38:28 So Jeremiahº abodeºº in the courtº of the prisonº untilº the dayº thatº Jerusalemº was taken:ºº and he wasº [there] whenº Jerusalemº was taken.ºº
