 9:1 ¶ Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

 9:1 ¶ Oh thatººº my headº wereº waters,º and mine eyesº a fountainº of tears,º that I might weepºº dayº and nightº forº the slainº of the daughterº of my people!º

 9:2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging-place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

 9:2 Oh thatºº I hadºº in the wildernessº a lodging placeº of wayfaring men;ºº that I might leaveººº my people,º and goººº fromºº them! forº they [be] allº adulterers,ºº an assemblyº of treacherous men.ºº

 9:3 And they bend their tongue, [as it were] their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith Jehovah.

 9:3 And they bendººº their tonguesº [like] their bowº [for] lies:º but they are notº valiantºº for the truthº upon the earth;º forº they proceedºº from evilºº toº evil,º and they knowºº notº me, saithºº the LORD.º

 9:4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbor, and trust ye not in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go about with slanders.

 9:4 Take ye heedºº every oneº of his neighbour,ºº and trustºº ye notº inº anyº brother:º forº everyº brotherº will utterlyºº supplant,ºº and everyº neighbourº will walkºº with slanders.º

 9:5 And they will deceive every one his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity.

 9:5 And they will deceiveºº every oneº his neighbour,º and will notº speakºº the truth:º they have taughtºº their tongueº to speakºº lies,º [and] wearyºº themselvesº to commit iniquity.ºº

 9:6 Thy habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith Jehovah.

 9:6 Thine habitationºº [is] in the midstº of deceit;º through deceitº they refuseºº to knowºº me, saithºº the LORD.º

 9:7 Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how [else] should I do, because of the daughter of my people?

 9:7 Thereforeº thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts,º Behold,º I will meltºº them, and tryºº them; forº howº shall I doºº forºº the daughterº of my people?º

 9:8 Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him.

 9:8 Their tongueº [is as] an arrowº shot out;ºº it speakethºº deceit:º [one] speakethºº peaceablyº toº his neighbourº with his mouth,º but in heartº he layethºº his wait.º

 9:9 ¶ Shall I not visit them for these things? saith Jehovah; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

 9:9 ¶ Shall I notº visitºº them forº theseº [things]? saithºº the LORD:º shall notº my soulº be avengedºº on suchº a nationº as this?º

 9:10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passeth through; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the birds of the heavens and the beasts are fled, they are gone.

 9:10 Forº the mountainsº will I take upºº a weepingº and wailing,º and forº the habitationsº of the wildernessº a lamentation,º becauseº they are burned up,ºº so that noneººº can passºº throughº [them]; neitherº can [men] hearºº the voiceº of the cattle;º both the fowlºº of the heavensº and the beastº are fled;ºº they are gone.ºº

 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

 9:11 And I will makeººº Jerusalemº heaps,º [and] a denº of dragons;º and I will makeºº the citiesº of Judahº desolate,º withoutºº an inhabitant.ºº

 9:12 ¶ Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and [who is] he to whom the mouth of Jehovah hath spoken, that he may declare it? wherefore is the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passeth through?

 9:12 ¶ Whoº [is] the wiseº man,º that may understandººº this?º and [who is he] toº whom the mouthº of the LORDº hath spoken,ºº that he may declareºº it, forº whatº the landº perishethºº [and] is burned upºº like a wilderness,º that noneºº passeth through?ºº

 9:13 And Jehovah saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein,

 9:13 And the LORDº saith,ºº Becauseº they have forsakenººº my lawº whichº I setºº beforeº them, and have notº obeyedºº my voice,º neitherº walkedºº therein;

 9:14 but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them;

 9:14 But have walkedººº afterº the imaginationº of their own heart,º and afterº Baalim,º whichº their fathersº taughtºº them:

 9:15 therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

 9:15 Thereforeº thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts,º the Godº of Israel;º Behold,º I will feedºº them, [even]º thisº people,º with wormwood,º and give them waterº of gallº to drink.ºº

 9:16 I will scatter them also among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them.

 9:16 I will scatterºº them also among the heathen,º whomº neitherº theyº nor their fathersº have known:ºº and I will sendººº a swordº afterº them, tillº I have consumedºº them.

 9:17 ¶ Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skilful women, that they may come:

 9:17 ¶ Thusº saithºº the LORDº of hosts,º Considerºº ye, and callºº for the mourning women,ºº that they may come;ºº and sendºº forº cunningº [women], that they may come:ºº

 9:18 and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

 9:18 And let them make haste,ºº and take upºº a wailingº forº us, that our eyesº may run downºº with tears,º and our eyelidsº gush outºº with waters.º

 9:19 For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we ruined! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings.

 9:19 Forº a voiceº of wailingº is heardºº out of Zion,ºº Howº are we spoiled!ºº we are greatlyº confounded,ºº becauseº we have forsakenºº the land,º becauseº our dwellingsº have cast [us] out.ºº

 9:20 Yet hear the word of Jehovah, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbor lamentation.

 9:20 Yetº hearºº the wordº of the LORD,º O ye women,º and let your earº receiveºº the wordº of his mouth,º and teachºº your daughtersº wailing,º and every oneº her neighbourº lamentation.º

 9:21 For death is come up into our windows, it is entered into our palaces; to cut off the children from without, [and] the young men from the streets.

 9:21 Forº deathº is come upºº into our windows,º [and] is enteredºº into our palaces,º to cut offºº the childrenº from without,ºº [and] the young menº from the streets.ºº

 9:22 Speak, Thus saith Jehovah, The dead bodies of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman; and none shall gather [them].

 9:22 Speak,ºº Thusº saithºº the LORD,º Even the carcasesº of menº shall fallºº as dungº uponº the openº field,º and as the handfulº afterºº the harvestman,ºº and noneº shall gatherºº [them].

 9:23 ¶ Thus saith Jehovah, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches;

 9:23 ¶ Thusº saithºº the LORD,º Let notº the wiseº [man] gloryºº in his wisdom,º neitherº let the mightyº [man] gloryºº in his might,º let notº the richº [man] gloryºº in his riches:º

 9:24 but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he hath understanding, and knoweth me, that I am Jehovah who exerciseth lovingkindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Jehovah.

 9:24 Butºº let him that gloriethºº gloryºº in this,º that he understandethºº and knowethºº me, thatº Iº [am] the LORDº which exerciseºº lovingkindness,º judgment,º and righteousness,º in the earth:º forº in theseº [things] I delight,ºº saithºº the LORD.º

 9:25 ¶ Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, that I will punish all them that are circumcised in [their] uncircumcision:

 9:25 ¶ Behold,º the daysº come,ºº saithºº the LORD,º that I will punishººº allº [them which are] circumcisedºº with the uncircumcised;º

 9:26 Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners [of their hair] cut off, that dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.

 9:26 Egypt,º and Judah,º and Edom,º and the childrenº of Ammon,º and Moab,º and allº [that are] in the utmostºº corners,º that dwellºº in the wilderness:º forº allº [these] nationsº [are] uncircumcised,º and allº the houseº of Israelº [are] uncircumcisedº in the heart.º
