 1:1 ¶ These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Mizraim{gr.Egypt} together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family.

 1:1 ¶ Now theseº [are] the namesº of the childrenº of Israel,º which cameºº into Egypt;º every manº and his householdº cameºº withº Jacob.º

 1:2 Reuben{gr.Ruben}, Simeon, Levi, Judah{gr.Judas},

 1:2 Reuben,º Simeon,º Levi,º and Judah,º

 1:3 Issachar, Zebulun{gr.Zabulon}, Benjamin,

 1:3 Issachar,º Zebulun,º and Benjamin,º

 1:4 Dan and Naphtali{gr.Nephthalim}, Gad and Asher{gr.Aser}.

 1:4 Dan,º and Naphtali,º Gad,º and Asher.º

 1:5 But Joseph was in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}. And all the souls [born] of Jacob were seventy-five.

 1:5 And allº the soulsº that came outºº of the loinsº of Jacobº wereº seventyº souls:º for Josephº wasº in Egyptº [already].

 1:6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

 1:6 And Josephº died,ºº and allº his brethren,º and allº thatº generation.º

 1:7 ¶ And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them.

 1:7 ¶ And the childrenº of Israelº were fruitful,ºº and increased abundantly,ºº and multiplied,ºº and waxed exceedingº mighty;ººº and the landº was filledºº withº them.

 1:8 And there arose up another king over Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, who knew not Joseph.

 1:8 Now there arose upºº a newº kingº overº Egypt,º whichº knewºº notºº Joseph.º

 1:9 And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we:

 1:9 And he saidºº untoº his people,º Behold,º the peopleº of the childrenº of Israelº [are] moreº and mightierº thanº we:

 1:10 come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whensoever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land.

 1:10 Comeº on,ºº let us deal wiselyºº with them; lestº they multiply,ºº and it come to pass,º that, whenº there falleth outºº any war,º theyº joinºº alsoº untoº our enemies,ºº and fightºº against us, and [so] get them upºº out ofº the land.º

 1:11 And he set over them task-masters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharaoh{gr.Pharao}, both Pitho, and Rameses{gr.Ramesses}, and On, which is Heliopolis.

 1:11 Therefore they did setºº overº them taskmastersºº toº afflictºº them with their burdens.º And they builtºº for Pharaohº treasureº cities,ºº Pithomº and Raamses.º

 1:12 But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Mizraimites{gr.Egyptians} greatly abhorred the children of Israel.

 1:12 But the moreº they afflictedºº them, the moreº they multipliedºº and grew.ººº And they were grievedºº becauseºº of the childrenº of Israel.º

 1:13 And the Mizraimites{gr.Egyptians} tyrannised over the children of Israel by force.

 1:13 And the Egyptiansº madeººº the childrenº of Israelº to serveºº with rigour:º

 1:14 And they embittered their life by hard labours, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.

 1:14 And they madeººº their livesº bitterºº with hardº bondage,º in morter,º and in brick,º and in all mannerº of serviceº in the field:ºº allº their service,º whereinº they made them serve,ºº [was] with rigour.º

 1:15 ¶ And the king of the Mizraimites{gr.Egyptians} spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews; the name of the one was, Zipporah{gr.Sepphora}; and the name of the second, Puah{gr.Phua}.

 1:15 ¶ And the kingº of Egyptº spakeºº to the Hebrewº midwives,ºº of whichº the nameº of the oneº [was] Shiphrah,º and the nameº of the otherº Puah:º

 1:16 And he said, When ye do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it.

 1:16 And he said,ºº When ye do the office of a midwifeºº toº the Hebrew women,º and seeºº [them] uponº the stools;º ifº itº [be] a son,º then ye shall killºº him: but ifº itº [be] a daughter,º then she shall live.ºº

 1:17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} appointed them; and they saved the male children alive.

 1:17 But the midwivesºº fearedººº Elohim,º and didºº notº asº the kingº of Egyptº commandedººº them, but savedººº the men childrenº alive.ºº

 1:18 And the king of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that ye have done this thing, and saved the male children alive?

 1:18 And the kingº of Egyptº calledºº forº the midwives,ºº and saidºº unto them, Whyº have ye doneºº thisº thing,º and have savedººº the men childrenº alive?ºº

 1:19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh{gr.Pharao}, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children.

 1:19 And the midwivesºº saidºº untoº Pharaoh,º Becauseº the Hebrewº womenºº [are] notº as the Egyptianº women;ºº forº theyº [are] lively,º and are deliveredºº ereº the midwivesºº come inºº untoº them.

 1:20 And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.

 1:20 Therefore Elohimº dealt wellºº with the midwives:ºº and the peopleº multiplied,ºº and waxed veryº mighty.ººº

 1:21 And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families.

 1:21 And it came to pass,º becauseº the midwivesºº fearedººº Elohim,º that he madeºº them houses.º

 1:22 And Pharaoh{gr.Pharao} charged all his people, saying, Whatever male [child] shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive.

 1:22 And Pharaohº chargedºº allº his people,º saying,ºº Everyº sonº that is bornº ye shall castºº into the river,º and everyº daughterº ye shall save alive.ºº
