 32:1 ¶
And when the people saw that Mosheh{gr.Moses} delayed to come down from the mountain, the people combined against Aaron, and said to him, Arise and make us gods who shall go before us; for this Mosheh{gr.Moses}, the man who brought us forth out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}-- we do not know what is become of him. |
|
 32:1 ¶
And when the peopleº
sawºº
thatº
Mosesº
delayedºº
to come downºº
out ofº
the mount,º
the peopleº
gathered themselves togetherºº
untoº
Aaron,º
and saidºº
untoº
him, Up,ºº
makeºº
us elohim,º
whichº
shall goººº
beforeº
us; forº
[as for] thisº
Moses,º
the manº
thatº
broughtºº
us upº
out of the landºº
of Egypt,º
we wotºº
notº
whatº
is becomeº
of him. |
 32:2
And Aaron says to them, Take off the golden ear-rings which are in the ears of your wives and daughters, and bring them to me. |
|
 32:2
And Aaronº
saidºº
untoº
them, Break offºº
the goldenº
earrings,º
whichº
[are] in the earsº
of your wives,º
of your sons,º
and of your daughters,º
and bringºº
[them] untoº
me. |
 32:3
And all the people took off the golden ear-rings that were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. |
|
 32:3
And allº
the peopleº
brake offººº
the goldenº
earringsº
whichº
[were] in their ears,º
and broughtºº
[them] untoº
Aaron.º |
 32:4
And he received them at their hands, and formed them with a graving tool; and he made them a molten calf, and said, These [are] thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}. |
|
 32:4
And he receivedºº
[them] at their hand,ºº
and fashionedºº
it with a graving tool,º
after he had madeºº
it a moltenº
calf:º
and they said,ºº
Theseº
[be] thy elohim,º
O Israel,º
whichº
broughtºº
thee upº
out of the landºº
of Egypt.º |
 32:5
And Aaron having seen it built an altar before it, and Aaron made proclamation saying, To-morrow [is] a feast of the Lord. |
|
 32:5
And when Aaronº
sawºº
[it], he builtºº
an altarº
beforeº
it; and Aaronº
made proclamation,ºº
and said,ºº
To morrowº
[is] a feastº
to Yahweh.º |
 32:6
And having risen early on the morrow, he offered whole burnt-offerings, and offered a peace-offering; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. |
|
 32:6
And they rose up earlyºº
on the morrow,ºº
and offeredºº
burnt offerings,º
and broughtºº
peace offerings;º
and the peopleº
satºº
downº
to eatºº
and to drink,ºº
and rose upºº
to play.ºº |
 32:7 ¶
And the Lord spoke to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, saying, Go quickly, descend hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} have transgressed; |
|
 32:7 ¶
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
Go,ººº
get thee down;ºº
forº
thy people,º
whichº
thou broughtestºº
out of the landºº
of Egypt,º
have corruptedºº
[themselves]: |
 32:8
they have quickly gone out of the way which thou commandedst; they have made for themselves a calf, and worshipped it, and sacrificed to it, and said, These are thy gods, O Israel, who brought thee up out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}. |
|
 32:8
They have turnedºº
asideº
quicklyº
out ofº
the wayº
whichº
I commandedºº
them: they have madeºº
them a moltenº
calf,º
and have worshippedºº
it, and have sacrificedºº
thereunto, and said,ºº
Theseº
[be] thy elohim,º
O Israel,º
whichº
have brought thee upºº
out of the landºº
of Egypt.º |
 32:9
[Absent from Manuscript] |
|
 32:9
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
I have seenººº
thisº
people,º
and, behold,º
itº
[is] a stiffneckedºº
people:º |
 32:10
And now let me alone, and I will be very angry with them and consume them, and I will make thee a great nation. |
|
 32:10
Nowº
therefore let me alone,ººº
that my wrathº
may wax hotºº
against them, and that I may consumeºº
them: and I will makeºº
of thee a greatº
nation.º |
 32:11
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} prayed before the Lord God, and said, Wherefore, O Lord, art thou very angry with thy people, whom thou broughtest out of the land of Mizraim{gr.Egypt} with great strength, and with thy high arm? |
|
 32:11
And Mosesº
besoughtºººº
Yahwehº
his Elohim,º
and said,ºº
Yahweh,º
whyº
doth thy wrathº
wax hotºº
against thy people,º
whichº
thou hast brought forthºº
out of the landºº
of Egyptº
with greatº
power,º
and with a mightyº
hand?º |
 32:12
[Take heed] lest at any time the Mizraimites{gr.Egyptians} speak, saying, With evil intent he brought them out to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from off the earth; cease from thy wrathful anger, and be merciful to the sin of thy people, |
|
 32:12
Whereforeº
should the Egyptiansº
speak,ºº
and say,ºº
For mischiefº
did he bringºº
them out,º
to slayºº
them in the mountains,º
and to consumeºº
them fromºº
the faceº
of the earth?º
Turnºº
from thy fierceº
wrath,ººº
and repentºº
ofº
this evilº
against thy people.º |
 32:13
remembering Abraham{gr.Abraam} and Isaac and Jacob thy servants, to whom thou hast sworn by thyself, and hast spoken to them, saying, I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of heaven for multitude, and all this land which thou spokest of to give to them, so that they shall possess it for ever. |
|
 32:13
Rememberºº
Abraham,º
Isaac,º
and Israel,º
thy servants,º
to whomº
thou swarestºº
by thine own self, and saidstºº
untoº
them, I will multiplyººº
your seedº
as the starsº
of heaven,º
and allº
thisº
landº
thatº
I have spokenºº
of will I giveºº
unto your seed,º
and they shall inheritºº
[it] for ever.º |
 32:14
And the Lord was prevailed upon to preserve his people. |
|
 32:14
And Yahwehº
repentedºº
ofº
the evilº
whichº
he thoughtºº
to doºº
unto his people.º |
 32:15 ¶
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tables of testimony were in his hands, tables of stone written on both their sides: they were written within and without. |
|
 32:15 ¶
And Mosesº
turned,ºº
and went downºº
fromº
the mount,º
and the twoº
tablesº
of the testimonyº
[were] in his hand:º
the tablesº
[were] writtenºº
on bothºº
their sides;º
on the one sideºº
and on the otherºº
[were] theyº
written.ºº |
 32:16
And the tables were the work of God, and the writing the writing of God written on the tables. |
|
 32:16
And the tablesº
[were] the workº
of Elohim,º
and the writingº
[was] the writingº
of Elohim,º
gravenºº
uponº
the tables.º |
 32:17
And Joshua{gr.Jesus} having heard the voice of the people crying, says to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, There is a noise of war in the camp. |
|
 32:17
And when Joshuaº
heardººº
the noiseº
of the peopleº
as they shouted,º
he saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
[There is] a noiseº
of warº
in the camp.º |
 32:18
And [Mosheh{gr.Moses}] says, It is not the voice of them that begin the battle, nor the voice of them that begin [the cry] of defeat, but the voice of them that begin [the banquet] of wine do I hear. |
|
 32:18
And he said,ºº
[It is] notº
the voiceº
of [them that] shoutºº
for mastery,º
neitherº
[is it] the voiceº
of [them that] cryºº
for being overcome:º
[but] the noiseº
of [them that] singºº
do Iº
hear.ºº |
 32:19 ¶
And when he drew nigh to the camp, he sees the calf and the dances; and Mosheh{gr.Moses} being very angry cast the two tables out of his hands, and broke them to pieces under the mountain. |
|
 32:19 ¶
And it came to pass,º
as soon asº
he came nighºº
untoº
the camp,º
that he sawººº
the calf,º
and the dancing:º
and Moses'º
angerº
waxed hot,ºº
and he castººº
the tablesº
out of his hands,ºº
and brakeºº
them beneathº
the mount.º |
 32:20
And having taken the calf which they made, he consumed it with fire, and ground it very small, and scattered it on the water, and made the children of Israel to drink it. |
|
 32:20
And he tookººº
the calfº
whichº
they had made,ºº
and burntºº
[it] in the fire,º
and groundºº
[it] toº
powder,ººº
and strawedºº
[it] uponºº
the water,º
and madeº
the childrenº
of Israelº
drinkºº
[of it]. |
 32:21
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} said to Aaron, What has this people done to thee, that thou hast brought upon them a great sin? |
|
 32:21
And Mosesº
saidºº
untoº
Aaron,º
Whatº
didºº
thisº
peopleº
unto thee, thatº
thou hast broughtºº
so greatº
a sinº
uponº
them? |
 32:22
And Aaron said to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, Be not angry, [my] lord, for thou knowest the impetuosity of this people. |
|
 32:22
And Aaronº
said,ºº
Let notº
the angerº
of my adonº
wax hot:ºº
thouº
knowestººº
the people,º
thatº
theyº
[are set] on mischief.º |
 32:23
For they say to me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this man Mosheh{gr.Moses}, who brought us out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, we do not know what is become of him. |
|
 32:23
For they saidºº
unto me, Makeºº
us elohim,º
whichº
shall goººº
beforeº
us: forº
[as for] thisº
Moses,º
the manº
thatº
brought us upºº
out of the landºº
of Egypt,º
we wotºº
notº
whatº
is becomeº
of him. |
 32:24
And I said to them, If any one has golden ornaments, take them off; and they gave them me, and I cast them into the fire, and there came out this calf. |
|
 32:24
And I saidºº
unto them, Whosoeverº
hath any gold,º
let them breakºº
[it] off.º
So they gaveºº
[it] me: then I castºº
it into the fire,º
and there came outºº
thisº
calf.º |
 32:25 ¶
And when Mosheh{gr.Moses} saw that the people was scattered,-- for Aaron [had] scattered them [so as to be] a rejoicing to their enemies,-- |
|
 32:25 ¶
And when Mosesº
sawºº
thatºº
the peopleº
[were] naked;ºº
(forº
Aaronº
had made them nakedºº
unto [their] shameº
among their enemies:)ºº |
 32:26
then stood Mosheh{gr.Moses} at the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the Lord's side? let him come to me. Then all the sons of Levi came to him. |
|
 32:26
Then Mosesº
stoodºº
in the gateº
of the camp,º
and said,ºº
Whoº
[is] on Yahweh'sº
side? [let him come] untoº
me. And allº
the sonsº
of Leviº
gatheredºº
themselves togetherº
untoº
him. |
 32:27
And he says to them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Put every one his sword on his thigh, and go through and return from gate to gate through the camp, and slay every one his brother, and every one his neighbour, and every one him that is nearest to him. |
|
 32:27
And he saidºº
unto them, Thusº
saithºº
Yahwehº
Elohimº
of Israel,º
Putºº
every manº
his swordº
byº
his side,º
[and] goºº
inº
and outºº
from gateºº
to gateº
throughout the camp,º
and slayºº
every manºº
his brother,º
and every manºº
his companion,º
and every manºº
his neighbour.º |
 32:28
And the sons of Levi did as Mosheh{gr.Moses} spoke to them, and there fell of the people in that day to the [number of] three thousand men. |
|
 32:28
And the childrenº
of Leviº
didºº
according to the wordº
of Moses:º
and there fellºº
ofº
the peopleº
thatº
dayº
about threeº
thousandº
men.º |
 32:29
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} said to them, Ye have filled your hands this day to the Lord each one on his son or on his brother, so that blessing should be given to you. |
|
 32:29
For Mosesº
had said,ºº
Consecrateºº
yourselvesººº
to dayº
to Yahweh,º
evenº
every manº
upon his son,º
and upon his brother;º
that he may bestowºº
uponº
you a blessingº
this day.º |
 32:30 ¶
And it came to pass after the morrow [had begun], that Mosheh{gr.Moses} said to the people, Ye have sinned a great sin; and now I will go up to God, that I may make atonement for your sin. |
|
 32:30 ¶
And it came to passº
on the morrow,ºº
that Mosesº
saidºº
untoº
the people,º
Yeº
have sinnedºº
a greatº
sin:º
and nowº
I will go upºº
untoº
Yahweh;º
peradventureº
I shall make an atonementºº
forº
your sin.º |
 32:31
And Mosheh{gr.Moses} returned to the Lord and said, I pray, O Lord, this people has sinned a great sin, and they have made for themselves golden gods. |
|
 32:31
And Mosesº
returnedºº
untoº
Yahweh,º
and said,ºº
Oh,º
thisº
peopleº
have sinnedºº
a greatº
sin,º
and have madeºº
them elohimº
of gold.º |
 32:32
And now if thou wilt forgive their sin, forgive [it]; and if not, blot me out of thy book, which thou hast written. |
|
 32:32
Yet now,º
ifº
thou wilt forgiveºº
their sin--;º
and ifº
not,º
blotºº
me, I pray thee,º
out of thy bookºº
whichº
thou hast written.ºº |
 32:33
And the Lord said to Mosheh{gr.Moses}, If any one has sinned against me, I will blot them out of my book. |
|
 32:33
And Yahwehº
saidºº
untoº
Moses,º
Whosoeverºº
hath sinnedºº
against me, him will I blot outºº
of my book.ºº |
 32:34
And now go, descend, and lead this people into the place of which I spoke to thee: behold, my angel shall go before thy face; and in the day when I shall visit I will bring upon them their sin. |
|
 32:34
Therefore nowº
go,ººº
leadººº
the peopleº
untoº
[the place] of whichº
I have spokenºº
unto thee: behold,º
mine Angelº
shall goººº
beforeº
thee: nevertheless in the dayº
when I visitºº
I will visitºº
their sinº
uponº
them. |
 32:35
And the Lord smote the people for the making the calf, which Aaron made. |
|
 32:35
And Yahwehº
plaguedººº
the people,º
becauseºº
they madeººº
the calf,º
whichº
Aaronº
made.ºº |
