 2:1 ¶ And the heavens and the earth were finished, and the whole world of them.

 2:1 ¶ Thus the heavensº and the earthº were finished,ºº and allº the hostº of them.º

 2:2 And God finished on the sixth day his works which he made, and he ceased on the seventh day from all his works which he made.

 2:2 And on the seventhº dayº Elohimº endedºº his workº whichº he had made;ºº and he restedºº on the seventhº dayº from allºº his workº whichº he had made.ºº

 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he ceased from all his works which God began to do.

 2:3 And Elohimº blessedººº the seventhº day,º and sanctifiedºº it: becauseº that in it he had restedºº from allºº his workº whichº Elohimº createdºº and made.ºº

 2:4 ¶ This [is] the book of the generation of heaven and earth, when they were made, in the day in which the Lord God made the heaven and the earth,

 2:4 ¶ Theseº [are] the generationsº of the heavensº and of the earthº when they were created,ºº in the dayº that Yahwehº Elohimº madeºº the earthº and the heavens,º

 2:5 and every herb of the field before it was on the earth, and all the grass of the field before it sprang up, for God had not rained on the earth, and there was not a man to cultivate it.

 2:5 And everyº plantº of the fieldº beforeº it wasº in the earth,º and everyº herbº of the fieldº beforeº it grew:ºº forº Yahwehº Elohimº had notº caused it to rainºº uponº the earth,º and [there was] notº a manº to tillººº the ground.º

 2:6 But there rose a fountain out of the earth, and watered the whole face of the earth.

 2:6 But there went upºº a mistº fromº the earth,º and wateredººº the wholeº faceº of the ground.º

 2:7 And God formed the man [of] dust of the earth, and breathed upon his face the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.

 2:7 And Yahwehº Elohimº formedººº manº [of] the dustº ofº the ground,º and breathedºº into his nostrilsº the breathº of life;º and manº becameº a livingº soul.º

 2:8 ¶ And God planted a garden eastward in Eden{gr.Edem}, and placed there the man whom he had formed.

 2:8 ¶ And Yahwehº Elohimº plantedºº a gardenº eastwardºº in Eden;º and thereº he putººº the manº whomº he had formed.ºº

 2:9 And God made to spring up also out of the earth every tree beautiful to the eye and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of learning the knowledge of good and evil.

 2:9 And outº ofº the groundº madeºº Yahwehº Elohimº to growºº everyº treeº that is pleasantºº to the sight,º and goodº for food;º the treeº of lifeº also in the midstº of the garden,º and the treeº of knowledgeº of goodº and evil.º

 2:10 And a river proceeds out of Eden{gr.Edem} to water the garden, thence it divides itself into four heads.

 2:10 And a riverº went outºº of Edenºº to waterººº the garden;º and from thenceºº it was parted,ºº and becameº into fourº heads.º

 2:11 The name of the one, Phisom, this it is which encircles the whole land of Evilat, where there is gold.

 2:11 The nameº of the firstº [is] Pison:º thatº [is] itº which compassethººº the wholeº landº of Havilah,º whereºº [there is] gold;º

 2:12 And the gold of that land is good, there also is carbuncle and emerald.

 2:12 And the goldº of thatº landº [is] good:º thereº [is] bdelliumº and the onyxº stone.º

 2:13 And the name of the second river is Geon, this it is which encircles the whole land of Ethiopia.

 2:13 And the nameº of the secondº riverº [is] Gihon:º the sameº [is] it that compassethººº the wholeº landº of Ethiopia.º

 2:14 And the third river is Tigris, this is that which flows forth over against the Assyrians. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

 2:14 And the nameº of the thirdº riverº [is] Hiddekel:º that [is] itº which goethº towardºº the eastº of Assyria.º And the fourthº riverº [is] Euphrates.º

 2:15 And the Lord God took the man whom he had formed, and placed him in the garden of Delight, to cultivate and keep it.

 2:15 And Yahwehº Elohimº tookººº the man,º and putº himºº into the gardenº of Edenº to dressºº it and to keepºº it.

 2:16 And the Lord God gave a charge to Adam, saying, Of every tree which is in the garden thou mayest freely eat,

 2:16 And Yahwehº Elohimº commandedººº the man,º saying,ºº Of everyºº treeº of the gardenº thou mayest freelyºº eat:ºº

 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil-- of it ye shall not eat, but in whatsoever day ye eat of it, ye shall surely die.

 2:17 But of the treeºº of the knowledgeº of goodº and evil,º thou shalt notº eatºº ofº it: forº in the dayº that thou eatestºº thereofº thou shalt surelyºº die.ºº

 2:18 ¶ And the Lord God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone, let us make for him a help suitable to him.

 2:18 ¶ And Yahwehº Elohimº said,ºº [It is] notº goodº that the manº should beºº alone;º I will makeºº him an helpº meetº for him.º

 2:19 And God formed yet farther out of the earth all the wild beasts of the field, and all the birds of the sky, and he brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them, and whatever Adam called any living creature, that was the name of it.

 2:19 And out ofº the groundº Yahwehº Elohimº formedºº everyº beastº of the field,º and everyº fowlº of the air;º and broughtºº [them] untoº Adamºº to seeºº whatº he would callºº them: and whatsoeverºº Adamºº calledºº every livingº creature,º thatº [was] the nameº thereof.º

 2:20 And Adam gave names to all the cattle and to all the birds of the sky, and to all the wild beasts of the field, but for Adam there was not found a help like to himself.

 2:20 And Adamºº gaveºº namesº to allº cattle,º and to the fowlº of the air,º and to everyº beastº of the field;º but for Adamºº there was notº foundºº an helpº meetº for him.º

 2:21 And God brought a trance upon Adam, and he slept, and he took one of his ribs, and filled up the flesh instead thereof.

 2:21 And Yahwehº Elohimº causedºº a deep sleepº to fallºº uponº Adam,º and he slept:ºº and he tookºº oneº of his ribs,ºº and closed upºº the fleshº insteadº thereof;

 2:22 And God formed the rib which he took from Adam into a woman, and brought her to Adam.

 2:22 Andº the rib,º whichº Yahwehº Elohimº had takenºº fromº man,º madeºº he a woman,º and broughtºº her untoº the man.º

 2:23 And Adam said, This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of her husband.

 2:23 And Adamºº said,ºº Thisº [is] nowº boneº of my bones,ºº and fleshº of my flesh:ºº sheº shall be calledºº Woman,º becauseº sheº was takenºº out of Man.ºº

 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

 2:24 Thereforeºº shall a manº leaveººº his fatherº and his mother,º and shall cleaveºº unto his wife:º and they shall beº oneº flesh.º

 2:25 And the two were naked, both Adam and his wife, and were not ashamed.

 2:25 And they wereº bothº naked,º the manº and his wife,º and were notº ashamed.ºº
