 32:1 ¶ And Jacob departed for his journey; and having looked up, he saw the host of God encamped; and the angels of God met him.

 32:1 ¶ And Jacobº wentºº on his way,º and the angelsº of Elohimº metºº him.

 32:2 And Jacob said, when he saw them, This is the Camp of God; and he called the name of that place, Encampments.

 32:2 And whenº Jacobº sawº them,ºº he said,ºº Thisº [is] Elohim'sº host:º and he calledºº the nameº of thatº placeº Mahanaim.º

 32:3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother to the land of Seir, to the country of Edom.

 32:3 And Jacobº sentºº messengersº beforeº himº toº Esauº his brotherº unto the landº of Seir,º the countryº of Edom.º

 32:4 And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye say to my lord Esau: Thus saith thy servant Jacob; I have sojourned with Laban and tarried until now.

 32:4 And he commandedºº them, saying,ºº Thusº shall ye speakºº unto my adonº Esau;º Thy servantº Jacobº saithºº thus,º I have sojournedºº withº Laban,º and stayed thereºº untilº now:º

 32:5 And there were born to me oxen, and asses, and sheep, and men-servants and women-servants; and I sent to tell my lord Esau, that thy servant might find grace in thy sight.

 32:5 And I haveº oxen,º and asses,º flocks,º and menservants,º and womenservants:º and I have sentºº to tellºº my adon,º that I may findºº graceº in thy sight.º

 32:6 ¶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and lo! he comes to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

 32:6 ¶ And the messengersº returnedºº toº Jacob,º saying,ºº We cameºº toº thy brotherº Esau,º and alsoº he comethºº to meetº thee,ºº and fourº hundredº menº withº him.

 32:7 And Jacob was greatly terrified, and was perplexed; and he divided the people that was with him, and the cows, and the camels, and the sheep, into two camps.

 32:7 Then Jacobº was greatlyº afraidººº and distressed:ºº and he dividedººº the peopleº thatº [was] withº him, and the flocks,º and herds,º and the camels,º into twoº bands;º

 32:8 And Jacob said, If Esau should come to one camp, and smite it, the other camp shall be in safety.

 32:8 And said,ºº Ifº Esauº comeºº toº the oneº company,º and smiteº it,ºº then the other companyº which is leftºº shall escape.º

 32:9 ¶ And Jacob said, God of my father Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and God of my father Isaac, O Lord, thou [art] he that said to me, Depart quickly to the land of thy birth, and I will do thee good.

 32:9 ¶ And Jacobº said,ºº O Elohimº of my fatherº Abraham,º and Elohimº of my fatherº Isaac,º Yahwehº which saidstºº untoº me, Returnºº unto thy country,º and to thy kindred,º and I will deal wellºº withº thee:

 32:10 Let there be to me a sufficiency of all the justice and all the truth which thou hast wrought with thy servant; for with this my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I am become two camps.

 32:10 I am not worthyº of the leastºº of allºº the mercies,º and of allºº the truth,º whichº thou hast shewedºº untoº thy servant;º forº with my staffº I passed overººº thisº Jordan;º and nowº I am becomeº twoº bands.º

 32:11 Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I am afraid of him, lest haply he should come and smite me, and the mother upon the children.

 32:11 Deliverº me,ºº I pray thee,º from the handºº of my brother,º from the handºº of Esau:º forº Iº fearºº him, lestº he will comeºº and smiteº me,ºº [and] the motherº withº the children.º

 32:12 But thou saidst, I will do thee good, and will make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which shall not be numbered for multitude.

 32:12 And thouº saidst,ºº I will surelyºº do thee good,ººº and makeººº thy seedº as the sandº of the sea,º whichº cannotº be numberedºº for multitude.ºº

 32:13 ¶ And he slept there that night, and took of the gifts which he carried [with him], and sent out to Esau his brother,

 32:13 ¶ And he lodgedºº thereº that sameº night;º and tookºº ofº that which cameºº to his handº a presentº for Esauº his brother;º

 32:14 two hundred she-goats, twenty he-goats, two hundred sheep, twenty rams,

 32:14 Two hundredº she goats,º and twentyº he goats,º two hundredº ewes,º and twentyº rams,º

 32:15 milch camels, and their foals, thirty, forty kine, ten bulls, twenty asses, and ten colts.

 32:15 Thirtyº milchºº camelsº with their colts,º fortyº kine,º and tenº bulls,º twentyº she asses,º and tenº foals.º

 32:16 And he gave them to his servants [each] drove apart; and he said to his servants, Go on before me, and put a space between drove and drove.

 32:16 And he deliveredºº [them] into the handº of his servants,º every droveº by themselves;º and saidºº untoº his servants,º Pass overºº beforeº me,º and putºº a spaceº betwixtº droveº andº drove.º

 32:17 And he charged the first, saying, If Esau my brother meet thee, and he ask thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither wouldest thou go, and whose are these possessions advancing before thee?

 32:17 And he commandedººº the foremost,º saying,ºº Whenº Esauº my brotherº meetethº thee,ºº and askethº thee,ºº saying,ºº Whoseº [art] thou?º and whitherº goestººº thou? and whoseº [are] theseº beforeº thee?

 32:18 Thou shalt say, Thy servant Jacob's; he hath sent gifts to my lord Esau, and lo! he is behind us.

 32:18 Then thou shalt say,ºº [They be] thy servantº Jacob's;º itº [is] a presentº sentºº unto my adonº Esau:º and, behold,º alsoº heº [is] behindº us.º

 32:19 And he charged the first and the second and the third, and all that went before him after these flocks, saying, Thus shall ye speak to Esau when ye find him;

 32:19 And soº commandedº heººº the second,º andºº the third,º andºº allº that followedººº the droves,º saying,ºº On thisº mannerº shall ye speakºº untoº Esau,º when ye findºº him.

 32:20 and ye shall say, Behold thy servant Jacob comes after us. For he said, I will propitiate his countenance with the gifts going before his presence, and afterwards I will behold his face, for peradventure he will accept me.

 32:20 And sayº yeºº moreover,º Behold,º thy servantº Jacobº [is] behindº us.º Forº he said,ºº I will appeaseººº himº with the presentº that goethºº beforeº me,º and afterwardºº I will seeºº his face;º peradventureº he will acceptººº of me.º

 32:21 So the presents went on before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp.

 32:21 So wentºº the presentº overºº beforeºº him:º and himselfº lodgedºº thatº nightº in the company.º

 32:22 And he rose up in that night, and took his two wives and his two servant-maids, and his eleven children, and crossed over the ford of Jaboch.

 32:22 And he rose upºº thatº night,º and tookººº his twoº wives,º and his twoº womenservants,º and his elevenºº sons,º and passed overººº the fordº Jabbok.º

 32:23 And he took them, and passed over the torrent, and brought over all his possessions.

 32:23 And he tookº them,ºº and sent them overººº the brook,º and sent overººº thatº he had.

 32:24 ¶ And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him till the morning.

 32:24 ¶ And Jacobº was leftºº alone;º and there wrestledºº a manº withº him untilº the breakingºº of the day.º

 32:25 And he saw that he prevailed not against him; and he touched the broad part of his thigh, and the broad part of Jacob's thigh was benumbed in his wrestling with him.

 32:25 And when he sawºº thatº he prevailedºº notº against him, he touchedºº the hollowº of his thigh;º and the hollowº of Jacob'sº thighº was out of joint,ºº as he wrestledºº withº him.

 32:26 And he said to him, Let me go, for the day has dawned; but he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

 32:26 And he said,ºº Let me go,ºº forº the dayº breaketh.ºº And he said,ºº I will notº let thee go,ºº exceptºº thou blessºº me.

 32:27 And he said to him, What is thy name? and he answered, Jacob.

 32:27 And he saidºº untoº him, Whatº [is] thy name?º And he said,ºº Jacob.º

 32:28 And he said to him, Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name; for thou hast prevailed with God, and shalt be mighty with men.

 32:28 And he said,ºº Thy nameº shall be calledºº noº moreº Jacob,º butºº Israel:º forº as a prince hast thou powerºº withº Elohimº and withº men,ºº and hast prevailed.ºº

 32:29 And Jacob asked and said, Tell me thy name; and he said, Wherefore dost thou ask after my name? and he blessed him there.

 32:29 And Jacobº askedºº [him], and said,ºº Tellºº [me], I pray thee,º thy name.º And he said,ºº Whereforeº [is] itº [that] thou dost askºº after my name?º And he blessedºº him there.º

 32:30 And Jacob called the name of that place, the Face of God; for, [said he], I have seen God face to face, and my life was preserved.

 32:30 And Jacobº calledºº the nameº of the placeº Peniel:º forº I have seenºº Elohimº faceº toº face,º and my lifeº is preserved.ºº

 32:31 And the sun rose upon him, when he passed the Face of God; and he halted upon his thigh.

 32:31 And asº he passed overººº Penuelº the sunº roseºº upon him, and heº haltedºº uponº his thigh.º

 32:32 Therefore the children of Israel will by no means eat of the sinew which was benumbed, which is on the broad part of the thigh, until this day, because [the angel] touched the broad part of the thigh of Jacob-- [even] the sinew which was benumbed.

 32:32 Thereforeºº the childrenº of Israelº eatºº notº [of]º the sinewº which shrank,º whichº [is] uponº the hollowº of the thigh,º untoº thisº day:º becauseº he touchedºº the hollowº of Jacob'sº thighº in the sinewº that shrank.º
