 42:1 ¶
And Jacob having seen that there was a sale [of corn] in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}, said to his sons, Why are ye indolent? |
|
 42:1 ¶
Now when Jacobº
sawºº
thatº
there wasº
cornº
in Egypt,º
Jacobº
saidºº
unto his sons,º
Whyº
do ye lookºº
one upon another?º |
 42:2
Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Mizraim{gr.Egypt}; go down thither, and buy for us a little food, that we may live, and not die. |
|
 42:2
And he said,ºº
Behold,º
I have heardºº
thatº
there isº
cornº
in Egypt:º
get you downºº
thither,º
and buyºº
for us from thence;ºº
that we may live,ºº
and notº
die.ºº |
 42:3 ¶
And the ten brethren of Joseph went down to buy corn out of Mizraim{gr.Egypt}. |
|
 42:3 ¶
And Joseph'sº
tenº
brethrenº
went downºº
to buyºº
cornº
in Egypt.ºº |
 42:4
But [Jacob] sent not Benjamin, the brother of Joseph, with his brethren; for he said, Lest, haply, disease befall him. |
|
 42:4
But Benjamin,º
Joseph'sº
brother,º
Jacobº
sentºº
notº
withº
his brethren;º
forº
he said,ºº
Lest peradventureº
mischiefº
befallº
him.ºº |
 42:5
And the sons of Israel came to buy with those that came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}. |
|
 42:5
And the sonsº
of Israelº
cameºº
to buyºº
[corn] amongº
those that came:ºº
forº
the famineº
wasº
in the landº
of Canaan.º |
 42:6
And Joseph was ruler of the land; he sold to all the people of the land. And the brethren of Joseph, having come, did reverence to him, [bowing] with the face to the ground. |
|
 42:6
And Josephº
[was] the governorº
overº
the land,º
[and] heº
[it was] that soldºº
to allº
the peopleº
of the land:º
and Joseph'sº
brethrenº
came,ºº
and bowed downºº
themselvesº
before him [with] their facesº
to the earth.º |
 42:7
And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, and estranged himself from them, and spoke hard words to them; and said to them, Whence are ye come? And they said, Out of the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}, to buy food. |
|
 42:7
And Josephº
sawººº
his brethren,º
and he knewºº
them, but made himself strangeºº
untoº
them, and spakeºº
roughlyº
untoº
them; and he saidºº
untoº
them, Whenceºº
comeºº
ye? And they said,ºº
From the landºº
of Canaanº
to buyºº
food.º |
 42:8
And Joseph knew his brethren, but they knew not him. |
|
 42:8
And Josephº
knewººº
his brethren,º
but theyº
knewºº
notº
him. |
 42:9
And Joseph remembered his dream, which he saw; and he said to them, Ye are spies; to observe the marks of the land are ye come. |
|
 42:9
And Josephº
rememberedººº
the dreamsº
whichº
he dreamedºº
of them, and saidºº
untoº
them, Yeº
[are] spies;ºº
to seeººº
the nakednessº
of the landº
ye are come.ºº |
 42:10
But they said, Nay, Sir, we thy servants are come to buy food; |
|
 42:10
And they saidºº
untoº
him, Nay,º
my adon,º
but to buyºº
foodº
are thy servantsº
come.ºº |
 42:11
we are all sons of one man; we are peaceable, thy servants are not spies. |
|
 42:11
Weº
[are] allº
oneº
man'sº
sons;º
weº
[are] trueº
[men], thy servantsº
areº
noº
spies.ºº |
 42:12
And he said to them, Nay, but ye are come to observe the marks of the land. |
|
 42:12
And he saidºº
untoº
them, Nay,º
butº
to seeºº
the nakednessº
of the landº
ye are come.ºº |
 42:13
And they said, We thy servants are twelve brethren, in the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}; and, behold, the youngest is with our father to-day, but the other one is not. |
|
 42:13
And they said,ºº
Thy servantsº
[are] twelveºº
brethren,º
the sonsº
of oneº
manº
in the landº
of Canaan;º
and, behold,º
the youngestº
[is] this dayº
withº
our father,º
and oneº
[is] not.º |
 42:14
And Joseph said to them, This is it that I spoke to you, saying, ye are spies; |
|
 42:14
And Josephº
saidºº
untoº
them, Thatº
[is it] thatº
I spakeºº
untoº
you, saying,ºº
Yeº
[are] spies:ºº |
 42:15
herein shall ye be manifested; by the health of Pharaoh{gr.Pharao}, ye shall not depart hence, unless your younger brother come hither. |
|
 42:15
Herebyº
ye shall be proved:ºº
By the lifeº
of Pharaohº
ye shall not go forthºº
hence,ºº
exceptºº
your youngestº
brotherº
comeºº
hither.º |
 42:16
Send one of you, and take your brother; and go ye to prison, till your words be clear, whether ye speak the truth or not; but, if not, by the health of Pharaoh{gr.Pharao}, verily ye are spies. |
|
 42:16
Sendºº
oneº
ofº
you, and let him fetchººº
your brother,º
and yeº
shall be kept in prison,ºº
that your wordsº
may be proved,ºº
whether [there be any] truthº
inº
you: or elseºº
by the lifeº
of Pharaohº
surelyº
yeº
[are] spies.ºº |
 42:17
And he put them in prison three days. |
|
 42:17
And he put them all togetherººº
intoº
wardº
threeº
days.º |
 42:18
And he said to them on the third day, This do, and ye shall live, for I fear God. |
|
 42:18
And Josephº
saidºº
untoº
them the thirdº
day,º
Thisº
do,ºº
and live;ºº
[for] Iº
fearºº
Elohim:º |
 42:19
If ye be peaceable, let one of your brethren be detained in prison; but go ye, and carry back the corn ye have purchased. |
|
 42:19
Ifº
yeº
[be] trueº
[men], let oneº
of your brethrenº
be boundºº
in the houseº
of your prison:º
goººº
ye,º
carryºº
cornº
for the famineº
of your houses:º |
 42:20
And bring your younger brother to me, and your words shall be believed; but, if not, ye shall die. And they did so. |
|
 42:20
But bringºº
your youngestº
brotherº
untoº
me; so shall your wordsº
be verified,ºº
and ye shall notº
die.ºº
And they didºº
so.º |
 42:21 ¶
And each said to his brother, Yes, indeed, for we are in fault concerning our brother, when we disregarded the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we hearkened not to him; and therefore has this affliction come upon us. |
|
 42:21 ¶
And they saidºº
oneº
toº
another,º
Weº
[are] verilyº
guiltyº
concerningº
our brother,º
in thatº
we sawºº
the anguishº
of his soul,º
when he besoughtººº
us, and we would notº
hear;ºº
thereforeºº
is thisº
distressº
comeºº
uponº
us. |
 42:22
And Reuben{gr.Ruben} answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Hurt not the boy, and ye heard me not? and, behold, his blood is required. |
|
 42:22
And Reubenº
answeredºº
them, saying,ºº
Spakeº
Iºº
notº
untoº
you, saying,ºº
Do notº
sinºº
against the child;º
and ye would notº
hear?ºº
therefore, behold,º
alsoº
his bloodº
is required.ºº |
 42:23
But they knew not that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them. |
|
 42:23
And theyº
knewºº
notº
thatº
Josephº
understoodºº
[them]; forº
he spake untoº
them by an interpreter.ºº |
 42:24
And Joseph turned away from them, and wept; and again he came to them, and spoke to them; and he took Simeon{gr.Symeon} from them, and bound him before their eyes. |
|
 42:24
And he turned himself aboutºº
fromºº
them, and wept;ºº
and returnedº
toº
them again,ºº
and communedºº
withº
them, and tookºº
fromºº
themº
Simeon,º
and boundºº
him before their eyes.º |
 42:25 ¶
And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to return their money to each into his sack, and to give them provision for the way; and it was so done to them. |
|
 42:25 ¶
Then Josephº
commandedºº
to fillººº
their sacksº
with corn,º
and to restoreºº
every man'sº
moneyº
intoº
his sack,º
and to giveºº
them provisionº
for the way:º
and thusº
didº
heºº
unto them. |
 42:26
And having put the corn on the asses, they departed thence. |
|
 42:26
And they ladedººº
their assesº
withº
the corn,º
and departedººº
thence.ºº |
 42:27
And one having opened his sack to give his asses fodder, at the place where they rested, saw also his bundle of money, for it was on the mouth of his sack. |
|
 42:27
And as oneº
of them openedººº
his sackº
to giveºº
his assº
provenderº
in the inn,º
he espiedººº
his money;º
for, behold,º
itº
[was] in his sack'sº
mouth.º |
 42:28
And he said to his brethren, My money has been restored to me, and behold this is in my sack. And their heart was wonder-struck, and they were troubled, saying one to another, What is this that God has done to us? |
|
 42:28
And he saidºº
untoº
his brethren,º
My moneyº
is restored;ºº
and, lo,º
[it is] evenº
in my sack:º
and their heartº
failedºº
[them], and they were afraid,ºº
sayingºº
oneº
toº
another,º
Whatº
[is] thisº
[that] Elohimº
hath doneºº
unto us? |
 42:29 ¶
And they came to their father, Jacob, into the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}, and reported to him all that had happened to them, saying, |
|
 42:29 ¶
And they cameºº
untoº
Jacobº
their fatherº
unto the landº
of Canaan,º
and toldºº
himº
allº
that befellºº
unto them; saying,ºº |
 42:30
The man, the lord of the land, spoke harsh words to us, and put us in prison as spies of the land. |
|
 42:30
The man,º
[who is] the adonº
of the land,º
spakeºº
roughlyº
toº
us, and tookºº
us for spiesºº
ofº
the country.º |
 42:31
And we said to him, We are men of peace, we are not spies. |
|
 42:31
And we saidºº
untoº
him, Weº
[are] trueº
[men]; we areº
noº
spies:ºº |
 42:32
We are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is with his father to-day in the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}. |
|
 42:32
Weº
[be] twelveºº
brethren,º
sonsº
of our father;º
oneº
[is] not,º
and the youngestº
[is] this dayº
withº
our fatherº
in the landº
of Canaan.º |
 42:33
And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Herein shall I know that ye are peaceable; leave one brother here with me, and having taken the corn ye have purchased for your family, depart. |
|
 42:33
And the man,º
the adonº
of the country,º
saidºº
untoº
us, Herebyº
shall I knowºº
thatº
yeº
[are] trueº
[men]; leaveººº
oneº
of your brethrenº
[here] withº
me, and takeºº
[food for] the famineº
of your households,º
and be gone:ººº |
 42:34
And bring to me your younger brother; then I shall know that ye are not spies, but that ye are men of peace: and I will restore you your brother, and ye shall trade in the land. |
|
 42:34
And bringººº
your youngestº
brotherº
untoº
me: then shall I knowºº
thatº
yeº
[are] noº
spies,ºº
butº
[that] yeº
[are] trueº
[men: so] will I deliverºº
youº
your brother,º
and ye shall traffickºº
in the land.º |
 42:35 ¶
And it came to pass as they were emptying their sacks, there was each man's bundle of money in his sack; and they and their father saw their bundles of money, and they were afraid. |
|
 42:35 ¶
And it came to passº
as theyº
emptiedºº
their sacks,º
that, behold,º
every man'sº
bundleº
of moneyº
[was] in his sack:º
and when [both] theyº
and their fatherº
sawººº
the bundlesº
of money,º
they were afraid.ºº |
 42:36
And their father Jacob said to them, Ye have bereaved me. Joseph is not, Simeon{gr.Symeon} is not, and will ye take Benjamin? all these things have come upon me. |
|
 42:36
And Jacobº
their fatherº
saidºº
untoº
them, Me have ye bereavedºº
[of my children]: Josephº
[is] not,º
and Simeonº
[is] not,º
and ye will takeºº
Benjaminº
[away]: allº
these things areº
againstº
me. |
 42:37
And Reuben{gr.Ruben} spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee; give him into my hand, and I will bring him back to thee. |
|
 42:37
And Reubenº
spakeºº
untoº
his father,º
saying,ºº
Slayººº
my twoº
sons,º
ifº
I bringºº
him notº
toº
thee: deliverºº
him intoº
my hand,º
and Iº
will bringº
him toº
thee again.ºº |
 42:38
But he said, My son shall not go down with you, because his brother is dead, and he only has been left; and [suppose] it shall come to pass that he is afflicted by the way by which ye go, then ye shall bring down my old age with sorrow to the grave{gr.Hades}. |
|
 42:38
And he said,ºº
My sonº
shall notº
go downºº
withº
you; forº
his brotherº
is dead,ºº
and heº
is leftºº
alone:º
if mischiefº
befallºº
him by the wayº
in the whichº
ye go,ººº
then shall ye bring downººº
my gray hairsº
with sorrowº
to the grave.º |
