 24:1 ¶ And Abraham{gr.Abraam} was old, advanced in days, and the Lord blessed Abraham{gr.Abraam} in all things.

 24:1 ¶ And Abrahamº was old,ºº [and] well strickenºº in age:º and Yahwehº had blessedººº Abrahamº in all things.º

 24:2 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} said to his servant the elder of his house, who had rule over all his possessions, Put thy hand under my thigh,

 24:2 And Abrahamº saidºº untoº his eldestº servantº of his house,º that ruledº overºº allº thatº he had, Put,ºº I pray thee,º thy handº underº my thigh:º

 24:3 and I will adjure thee by the Lord the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou take not a wife for my son Isaac from the daughters of the Canaanites{gr.Chananites}, with whom I dwell, in the midst of them.

 24:3 And I will make thee swearºº by Yahweh,º the Elohimº of heaven,º and the Elohimº of the earth,º thatº thou shalt notº takeºº a wifeº unto my sonº of the daughtersºº of the Canaanites,º amongº whomº Iº dwell:ºº

 24:4 But thou shalt go instead to my country, where I was born, and to my tribe, and thou shalt take from thence a wife for my son Isaac.

 24:4 Butº thou shalt goººº untoº my country,º and toº my kindred,º and takeºº a wifeº unto my sonº Isaac.º

 24:5 And the servant said to him, Shall I carry back thy son to the land whence thou camest forth, if haply the woman should not be willing to return with me to this land?

 24:5 And the servantº saidºº untoº him, Peradventureº the womanº will notº be willingºº to followºººº meº untoº thisº land:º must I needs bringººº thy sonº againºº untoº the landº from whenceººº thou camest?ºº

 24:6 And Abraham{gr.Abraam} said to him, Take heed to thyself that thou carry not my son back thither.

 24:6 And Abrahamº saidºº untoº him, Bewareºº thou thatº thou bringºº notºº my sonº thitherº again.ºº

 24:7 ¶ The Lord the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, who took me out of my father's house, and out of the land whence I sprang, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, I will give this land to thee and to thy seed, he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife to my son from thence.

 24:7 ¶ Yahwehº Elohimº of heaven,º whichº tookº meºº from my father'sº house,ººº and from the landºº of my kindred,º and whichº spakeºº unto me, and thatº swareºº unto me, saying,ºº Unto thy seedº will I giveººº thisº land;º heº shall sendºº his angelº beforeº thee,º and thou shalt takeºº a wifeº unto my sonº from thence.ºº

 24:8 And if the woman should not be willing to come with thee into this land, thou shalt be clear from my oath, only carry not my son thither again.

 24:8 And ifº the womanº will notº be willingºº to followºººº thee,º then thou shalt be clearºº from this my oath:ººº onlyº bringºº notºº my sonº thitherº again.ºº

 24:9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of his master Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and swore to him concerning this matter.

 24:9 And the servantº putººº his handº underº the thighº of Abrahamº his adon,º and swareºº to him concerningº thatº matter.º

 24:10 ¶ And the servant took ten camels of his master's camels, and [he took] of all the goods of his master with him, and he arose and went into Padanaram{gr.Mesopotamia} to the city of Nahor{gr.Nachor}.

 24:10 ¶ And the servantº tookºº tenº camelsº of the camelsºº of his adon,º and departed;ººº for allº the goodsº of his adonº [were] in his hand:º and he arose,ºº and wentººº toº Mesopotamia,º untoº the cityº of Nahor.º

 24:11 And he rested his camels without the city by the well of water towards evening, when damsels go forth to draw water.

 24:11 And he madeºº his camelsº to kneel downºº withoutºº the cityº byº a wellº of waterº at the timeº of the evening,º [even] the timeº that women go outºº to drawºº [water].

 24:12 And he said, O Lord God of my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}, prosper my way before me to day, and deal mercifully with my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}.

 24:12 And he said,ºº O Yahwehº Elohimº of my adonº Abraham,º I pray thee,º send meº good speedººº this day,º and shewºº kindnessº untoº my adonº Abraham.º

 24:13 Lo! I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of them that inhabit the city come forth to draw water.

 24:13 Behold,º Iº standºº [here] byº the wellº of water;º and the daughtersº of the menºº of the cityº come outºº to drawºº water:º

 24:14 And it shall be, the virgin to whomsoever I shall say, Incline thy water-pot, that I may drink, and she shall say, Drink thou, and I will give thy camels drink, until they shall have done drinking-- even this one thou hast prepared for thy servant Isaac, and hereby shall I know that thou hast dealt mercifully with my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}.

 24:14 And let it come to pass,º that the damselº to whomº I shall say,ººº Let downºº thy pitcher,º I pray thee,º that I may drink;ºº and she shall say,ºº Drink,ºº and I will giveºº thy camelsº drinkºº also:º [let the same be] she [that] thou hast appointedºº for thy servantº Isaac;º and thereby shall I knowºº thatº thou hast shewedºº kindnessº untoº my adon.º

 24:15 ¶ And it came to pass before he had done speaking in his mind, that behold, Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} the daughter of Bethuel{gr.Bathuel}, the son of Milcah{gr.Melcha}, the wife of Nahor{gr.Nachor}, and [the same] the brother of Abraham{gr.Abraam}, came forth, having a water-pot on her shoulders.

 24:15 ¶ And it came to pass,º beforeº heº had doneºº speaking,ºº that, behold,º Rebekahº came out,ºº whoº was bornºº to Bethuel,º sonº of Milcah,º the wifeº of Nahor,º Abraham'sº brother,º with her pitcherº uponº her shoulder.º

 24:16 And the virgin was very beautiful in appearance, she was a virgin, a man had not known her; and she went down to the well, and filled her water-pot, and came up.

 24:16 And the damselº [was] veryº fairº to look upon,º a virgin,º neitherº had any manº knownºº her: and she went downºº to the well,º and filledºº her pitcher,º and came up.ºº

 24:17 And the servant ran up to meet her, and said, Give me a little water to drink out of thy pitcher;

 24:17 And the servantº ranºº to meetº her,ºº and said,ºº Let me, I pray thee,º drinkºº a littleº waterº of thy pitcher.ºº

 24:18 and she said, Drink, Sir; and she hasted, and let down the pitcher upon her arm, and gave him to drink, till he ceased drinking.

 24:18 And she said,ºº Drink,ºº my adon:º and she hasted,ºº and let downºº her pitcherº uponº her hand,º and gave him drink.ºº

 24:19 And she said, I will also draw water for thy camels, till they shall all have drunk.

 24:19 And when she had doneºº giving him drink,ºº she said,ºº I will drawºº [water] for thy camelsº also,º untilºº they have doneºº drinking.ºº

 24:20 And she hasted, and emptied the water-pot into the trough, and ran to the well to draw again, and drew water for all the camels.

 24:20 And she hasted,ºº and emptiedºº her pitcherº intoº the trough,º and ranºº againº untoº the wellº to drawºº [water], and drewºº for allº his camels.º

 24:21 And the man took great notice of her, and remained silent to know whether the Lord had made his way prosperous or not.

 24:21 And the manº wonderingºº at her held his peace,ºº to witºº whether Yahwehº had madeºº his journeyº prosperousºº orº not.º

 24:22 And it came to pass when all the camels ceased drinking, that the man took golden ear-rings, each of a drachm weight, and he [put] two bracelets on her hands, their weight was ten pieces of gold.

 24:22 And it came to pass,º asº the camelsº had doneºº drinking,ºº that the manº tookºº a goldenº earringº of half a shekelº weight,º and twoº braceletsº forº her handsº of tenº [shekels] weightº of gold;º

 24:23 And he asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? Tell me if there is room for us to lodge with thy father.

 24:23 And said,ºº Whoseº daughterº [art] thou?º tellºº me, I pray thee:º is thereº roomº [in] thy father'sº houseº for us to lodge in?ºº

 24:24 And she said to him, I am the daughter of Bethuel{gr.Bathuel} the son of Milcah{gr.Melcha}, whom she bore to Nahor{gr.Nachor}.

 24:24 And she saidºº untoº him, Iº [am] the daughterº of Bethuelº the sonº of Milcah,º whichº she bareºº unto Nahor.º

 24:25 And she said to him, We have both straw and much provender, and a place for resting.

 24:25 She saidºº moreover untoº him, We have bothº strawº andº provenderº enough,º andº roomº to lodge in.ºº

 24:26 And the man being well pleased, worshipped the Lord,

 24:26 And the manº bowed down his head,ºº and worshippedºº Yahweh.º

 24:27 and said, Blessed be the Lord the God of my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}, who has not suffered his righteousness to fail, nor his truth from my master, and the Lord has brought me prosperously to the house of the brother of my lord.

 24:27 And he said,ºº Blessedºº [be] Yahwehº Elohimº of my adonº Abraham,º whoº hath notº left destituteºººº my adonº of his mercyº and his truth:º Iº [being] in the way,º Yahwehº ledº meºº to the houseº of my adon'sº brethren.º

 24:28 And the damsel ran and reported to the house of her mother according to these words.

 24:28 And the damselº ran,ºº and toldºº [them of] her mother'sº houseº theseº things.º

 24:29 ¶ And Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to meet the man, to the well.

 24:29 ¶ And Rebekahº had a brother,º and his nameº [was] Laban:º and Labanº ranºº outº untoº the man,º untoº the well.º

 24:30 And it came to pass when he saw the ear-rings and the bracelets on the hands of his sister, and when he heard the words of Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} his sister, saying, Thus the man spoke to me, that he went to the man, as he stood by the camels at the well.

 24:30 And it came to pass,º when he sawººº the earringº and braceletsº uponº his sister'sº hands,º and when he heardººº the wordsº of Rebekahº his sister,º saying,ºº Thusº spakeºº the manº untoº me; that he cameºº untoº the man;º and, behold,º he stoodºº byº the camelsº atº the well.º

 24:31 And he said to him, Come in hither, thou blessed of the Lord, why standest thou without, whereas I have prepared the house and a place for the camels?

 24:31 And he said,ºº Come in,ºº thou blessedºº of Yahweh;º whereforeº standestºº thou without?º for Iº have preparedºº the house,º and roomº for the camels.º

 24:32 ¶ And the man entered into the house, and unloaded the camels, and gave the camels straw and provender, and water to wash his feet, and the feet of the men that were with him.

 24:32 ¶ And the manº cameºº into the house:º and he ungirdedºº his camels,º and gaveºº strawº and provenderº for the camels,º and waterº to washºº his feet,º and the men'sºº feetº thatº [were] withº him.

 24:33 And he set before them loaves to eat; but he said, I will not eat, until I have told my errand. And he said, Speak on.

 24:33 And there was setººººº [meat] beforeº himº to eat:ºº but he said,ºº I will notº eat,ºº untilºº I have toldºº mine errand.º And he said,ºº Speak on.ºº

 24:34 And he said, I am a servant of Abraham{gr.Abraam};

 24:34 And he said,ºº Iº [am] Abraham'sº servant.º

 24:35 and the Lord has blessed my master greatly, and he is exalted, and he has given him sheep, and calves, and silver, and gold, servants and servant-maids, camels, and asses.

 24:35 And Yahwehº hath blessedººº my adonº greatly;º and he is become great:ºº and he hath givenºº him flocks,º and herds,º and silver,º and gold,º and menservants,º and maidservants,º and camels,º and asses.º

 24:36 And Sarah{gr.Sarrha} my master's wife bore one son to my master after he had grown old; and he gave him whatever he had.

 24:36 And Sarahº my adon'sº wifeº bareºº a sonº to my adonº whenº she was old:º and unto him hath he givenººº allº thatº he hath.

 24:37 And my master caused me to swear, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites{gr.Chananites}, among whom I sojourn in their land.

 24:37 And my adonº made me swear,ºº saying,ºº Thou shalt notº takeºº a wifeº to my sonº of the daughtersºº of the Canaanites,º in whoseº landº Iº dwell:ºº

 24:38 But thou shalt go to the house of my father, and to my tribe, and thou shalt take thence a wife for my son.

 24:38 Butºº thou shalt goººº untoº my father'sº house,º and toº my kindred,º and takeºº a wifeº unto my son.º

 24:39 And I said to my master, Haply the woman will not go with me.

 24:39 And I saidºº untoº my adon,º Peradventureº the womanº will notº followºººº me.

 24:40 And he said to me, The Lord God to whom I have been acceptable in his presence, himself shall send out his angel with thee, and shall prosper thy journey, and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my tribe, and of the house of my father.

 24:40 And he saidºº untoº me, Yahweh,º beforeº whomº I walk,ºº will sendºº his angelº withº thee, and prosperºº thy way;º and thou shalt takeºº a wifeº for my sonº of my kindred,ºº and of my father'sº house:ººº

 24:41 Then shalt thou be clear from my curse, for whensoever thou shalt have come to my tribe, and they shall not give her to thee, then shalt thou be clear from my oath.

 24:41 Thenº shalt thou be clearºº from [this] my oath,ºº whenº thou comestºº toº my kindred;º and ifº they giveºº notº thee [one], thou shalt beº clearº from my oath.ºº

 24:42 And having come this day to the well, I said, Lord God of my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}, if thou prosperest my journey on which I am now going,

 24:42 And I cameºº this dayº untoº the well,º and said,ºº O Yahwehº Elohimº of my adonº Abraham,º ifº nowº thou doº prosperºº my wayº whichºº Iº go:ºº

 24:43 behold, I stand by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come forth to draw water, and it shall be [that] the damsel to whom I shall say, Give me a little water to drink out of thy pitcher,

 24:43 Behold,º Iº standºº byº the wellº of water;º and it shall come to pass,º that when the virginº cometh forthºº to drawºº [water], and I sayºº toº her, Give me,ºº I pray thee,º a littleº waterº of thy pitcherºº to drink;ºº

 24:44 and she shall say to me, Both drink thou, and I will draw water for thy camels, this [shall be] the wife whom the Lord has prepared for his own servant Isaac; and hereby shall I know that thou hast wrought mercy with my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}.

 24:44 And she sayºº toº me, Bothº drinkºº thou,º and I will alsoº drawºº for thy camels:º [let] the sameº [be] the womanº whomº Yahwehº hath appointed outºº for my adon'sº son.º

 24:45 And it came to pass before I had done speaking in my mind, straightway Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} came forth, having her pitcher on her shoulders; and she went down to the well, and drew water; and I said to her, Give me to drink.

 24:45 And beforeº Iº had doneºº speakingºº inº mine heart,º behold,º Rebekahº came forthºº with her pitcherº onº her shoulder;º and she went downºº unto the well,º and drewºº [water]: and I saidºº untoº her, Let me drink,ºº I pray thee.º

 24:46 And she hasted and let down her pitcher on her arm from her head, and said, Drink thou, and I will give thy camels drink; and I drank, and she gave the camels drink.

 24:46 And she made haste,ºº and let downºº her pitcherº fromºº her [shoulder], and said,ºº Drink,ºº and I will giveºº thy camelsº drinkºº also:º so I drank,ºº and she madeºº the camelsº drinkººº also.º

 24:47 And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me; and she said, I am daughter of Bethuel{gr.Bathuel} the son of Nahor{gr.Nachor}, whom Milcah{gr.Melcha} bore to him; and I put on her the ear-rings, and the bracelets on her hands.

 24:47 And I askedºº her, and said,ºº Whoseº daughterº [art] thou?º And she said,ºº The daughterº of Bethuel,º Nahor'sº son,º whomº Milcahº bareºº unto him: and I putºº the earringº uponº her face,º and the braceletsº uponº her hands.º

 24:48 And being well-pleased I worshipped the Lord, and I blessed the Lord the God of my master Abraham{gr.Abraam}, who has prospered me in a true way, so that I should take the daughter of my master's brother for his son.

 24:48 And I bowed down my head,ºº and worshippedºº Yahweh,º and blessedººº Yahwehº Elohimº of my adonº Abraham,º whichº had ledº meºº in the rightº wayº to takeººº my adon'sº brother'sº daughterº unto his son.º

 24:49 If then ye [will] deal mercifully and justly with my lord, [tell me], and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

 24:49 And nowº ifº ye willº dealºº kindlyº and trulyº withº my adon,º tellºº me: and ifº not,º tellºº me; that I may turnºº toº the right hand,º orº toº the left.º

 24:50 And Laban and Bethuel{gr.Bathuel} answered and said, This matter has come forth from the Lord, we shall not be able to answer thee bad or good.

 24:50 Then Labanº and Bethuelº answeredºº and said,ºº The thingº proceedethºº from Yahweh:ºº we cannotººº speakºº untoº thee badº orº good.º

 24:51 Behold, Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} is before thee, take her and go away, and let her be wife to the son of thy master, as the Lord has said.

 24:51 Behold,º Rebekahº [is] beforeº thee,º takeºº [her], and go,ººº and let her beº thy adon'sº son'sº wife,º asº Yahwehº hath spoken.ºº

 24:52 And it came to pass when the servant of Abraham{gr.Abraam} heard these words, he bowed himself to the Lord down to the earth.

 24:52 And it came to pass,º that, whenº Abraham'sº servantº heardººº their words,º he worshippedºº Yahweh,º [bowing himself] to the earth.º

 24:53 And the servant having brought forth jewels of silver and gold and raiment, gave them to Rebekah{gr.Rebecca}, and gave gifts to her brother, and to her mother.

 24:53 And the servantº brought forthºº jewelsº of silver,º and jewelsº of gold,º and raiment,º and gaveºº [them] to Rebekah:º he gaveºº also to her brotherº and to her motherº precious things.º

 24:54 And both he and the men with him ate and drank and went to sleep. And he arose in the morning and said, Send me away, that I may go to my master.

 24:54 And they did eatºº and drink,ºº heº and the menºº thatº [were] withº him, and tarried all night;ºº and they rose upºº in the morning,º and he said,ºº Send me awayºº unto my adon.º

 24:55 And her brethren and her mother said, Let the virgin remain with us about ten days, and after that she shall depart.

 24:55 And her brotherº and her motherº said,ºº Let the damselº abideºº withº us [a few] days,º at the leastº ten;º afterº thatº she shall go.ººº

 24:56 But he said to them, Hinder me not, for the Lord has prospered my journey for me; send me away, that I may depart to my master.

 24:56 And he saidºº untoº them, Hinderº meºº not,º seeing Yahwehº hath prosperedºº my way;º send me awayºº that I may goººº to my adon.º

 24:57 And they said, Let us call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth.

 24:57 And they said,ºº We will callºº the damsel,º and enquireºº atº her mouth.º

 24:58 And they called Rebekah{gr.Rebecca}, and said to her, Wilt thou go with this man? and she said, I will go.

 24:58 And they calledºº Rebekah,º and saidºº untoº her, Wilt thou goººº withº thisº man?º And she said,ºº I will go.ººº

 24:59 So they sent forth Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} their sister, and her goods, and the servant of Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and his attendants.

 24:59 And they sent awayººº Rebekahº their sister,º and her nurse,ºº and Abraham'sº servant,º and his men.ºº

 24:60 And they blessed Rebekah{gr.Rebecca}, and said to her, Thou art our sister; become thou thousands of myriads, and let thy seed possess the cities of their enemies.

 24:60 And they blessedººº Rebekah,º and saidºº unto her, Thouº [art] our sister,º beº thouºº [the mother] of thousandsº of millions,º and let thy seedº possessººº the gateº of those which hateºº them.

 24:61 ¶ And Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} rose up and her maidens, and they mounted the camels and went with the man; and the servant having taken up Rebekah{gr.Rebecca}, departed.

 24:61 ¶ And Rebekahº arose,ºº and her damsels,º and they rodeºº uponº the camels,º and followedºººº the man:º and the servantº tookººº Rebekah,º and went his way.ººº

 24:62 And Isaac went through the wilderness to the well of the vision, and he dwelt in the land toward the south.

 24:62 And Isaacº cameºº from the wayººº of the well Lahairoi;º for heº dweltºº in the southº country.º

 24:63 And Isaac went forth into the plain toward evening to meditate; and having lifted up his eyes, he saw camels coming.

 24:63 And Isaacº went outºº to meditateºº in the fieldº atºº the eventide:ºº and he lifted upºº his eyes,º and saw,ºº and, behold,º the camelsº [were] coming.ºº

 24:64 And Rebekah{gr.Rebecca} lifted up her eyes, and saw Isaac; and she alighted briskly from the camel,

 24:64 And Rebekahº lifted upººº her eyes,º and when she sawººº Isaac,º she lightedºº offºº the camel.º

 24:65 and said to the servant, Who is that man that walks in the plain to meet us? And the servant said, This is my master; and she took her veil and covered herself.

 24:65 For she [had] saidºº untoº the servant,º Whatº manº [is] thisº that walkethºº in the fieldº to meetº us?ºº And the servantº [had] said,ºº Itº [is] my adon:º therefore she tookºº a vail,º and covered herself.ºº

 24:66 And the servant told Isaac all that he had done.

 24:66 And the servantº toldºº Isaacºº allº thingsº thatº he had done.ºº

 24:67 And Isaac went into the house of his mother, and took Rebekah{gr.Rebecca}, and she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted for Sarah{gr.Sarrha} his mother.

 24:67 And Isaacº broughtº herºº into his motherº Sarah'sº tent,º and tookººº Rebekah,º and she becameº his wife;º and he lovedºº her: and Isaacº was comfortedºº afterº his mother'sº [death].
