 31:1 ¶ And Jacob heard the words of the sons of Laban, saying, Jacob has taken all that was our father's, and of our father's property has he gotten all this glory.

 31:1 ¶ And he heardººº the wordsº of Laban'sº sons,º saying,ºº Jacobº hath taken awayººº allº thatº [was] our father's;º and of [that] whichºº [was] our father'sº hath he gottenººº allº thisº glory.º

 31:2 And Jacob saw the countenance of Laban, and behold it was not toward him as before.

 31:2 And Jacobº beheldººº the countenanceº of Laban,º and, behold,º it [was] notº towardº him asº before.ºº

 31:3 And the Lord said to Jacob, Return to the land of thy father, and to thy family, and I will be with thee.

 31:3 And Yahwehº saidºº untoº Jacob,º Returnºº untoº the landº of thy fathers,º and to thy kindred;º and I will beº withº thee.

 31:4 And Jacob sent and called Leah{gr.Lea} and Rachel to the plain where the flocks were.

 31:4 And Jacobº sentºº and calledºº Rachelº and Leahº to the fieldº untoº his flock,º

 31:5 And he said to them, I see the face of your father, that it is not toward me as before, but the God of my father was with me.

 31:5 And saidºº unto them, Iº seeººº your father'sº countenance,º thatº it [is] notº towardº me asº before;ºº but the Elohimº of my fatherº hath beenºº withº me.

 31:6 And ye too know that with all my might I have served your father.

 31:6 And yeº knowºº thatº with allº my powerº I have servedººº your father.º

 31:7 But your father deceived me, and changed my wages for the ten lambs, yet God gave him not [power] to hurt me.

 31:7 And your fatherº hath deceivedºº me, and changedººº my wagesº tenº times;º but Elohimº sufferedº himºº notº to hurtººº me.º

 31:8 If he should say thus, The speckled shall be thy reward, then all the cattle would bear speckled; and if he should say, The white shall be thy reward, then would all the cattle bear white.

 31:8 Ifº he saidºº thus,º The speckledº shall beº thy wages;º then allº the cattleº bareºº speckled:º and ifº he saidºº thus,º The ringstrakedº shall beº thy hire;º then bareºº allº the cattleº ringstraked.º

 31:9 So God has taken away all the cattle of your father, and given them to me.

 31:9 Thus Elohimº hath taken awayººº the cattleº of your father,º and givenºº [them] to me.

 31:10 And it came to pass when the cattle conceived and were with young, that I beheld with mine eyes in sleep, and behold the he-goats and the rams leaping on the sheep and the she-goats, speckled and variegated and spotted with ash-coloured spots.

 31:10 And it came to passº at the timeº that the cattleº conceived,ºº that I lifted upºº mine eyes,º and sawºº in a dream,º and, behold,º the ramsº which leapedºº uponº the cattleº [were] ringstraked,º speckled,º and grisled.º

 31:11 And the angel of God said to me in a dream, Jacob; and I said, What is it?

 31:11 And the angelº of Elohimº spakeºº untoº me in a dream,º [saying], Jacob:º And I said,ºº Hereº [am] I.

 31:12 And he said, Look up with thine eyes, and behold the he-goats and the rams leaping on the sheep and the she-goats, speckled and variegated and spotted with ash-coloured spots; for I have seen all things that Laban does to thee.

 31:12 And he said,ºº Lift upºº nowº thine eyes,º and see,ºº allº the ramsº which leapºº uponº the cattleº [are] ringstraked,º speckled,º and grisled:º forº I have seenººº allº thatº Labanº doethºº unto thee.

 31:13 I am God that appeared to thee in the place of God where thou anointedst a pillar to me, and vowedst to me there a vow; now then arise and depart out of this land, depart into the land of thy nativity, and I will be with thee.

 31:13 Iº [am] the Elº of Bethel,º whereºº thou anointedstºº the pillar,º [and] whereºº thou vowedstºº a vowº unto me: nowº arise,ºº get thee outºº fromº thisº land,º and returnºº untoº the landº of thy kindred.º

 31:14 And Rachel and Leah{gr.Lea} answered and said to him, Have we yet a part or inheritance in the house of our father?

 31:14 And Rachelº and Leahº answeredºº and saidºº unto him, [Is there] yetº any portionº or inheritanceº for us in our father'sº house?º

 31:15 Are we not considered strangers by him? for he has sold us, and quite devoured our money.

 31:15 Are we notº countedºº of him strangers?º forº he hath soldºº us, and hath quiteºº devouredºº alsoºº our money.º

 31:16 All the wealth and the glory which God has taken from our father, it shall be our's and our children's; now then do whatsoever God has said to thee.

 31:16 Forº allº the richesº whichº Elohimº hath takenºº from our father,ºº thatº [is] ours, and our children's:º nowº then, whatsoeverºº Elohimº hath saidºº untoº thee, do.ºº

 31:17 ¶ And Jacob arose and took his wives and his children up on the camels;

 31:17 ¶ Then Jacobº rose up,ºº and setººº his sonsº and his wivesº uponº camels;º

 31:18 and he took away all his possessions and all his store, which he had gotten in Padanaram{gr.Mesopotamia}, and all that belonged to him, to depart to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan{gr.Chanaan}.

 31:18 And he carried awayººº allº his cattle,º and allº his goodsº whichº he had gotten,ºº the cattleº of his getting,º whichº he had gottenºº in Padanaram,º for to goºº toº Isaacº his fatherº in the landº of Canaan.º

 31:19 And Laban went to shear his sheep; and Rachel stole her father's images.

 31:19 And Labanº wentºº to shearººº his sheep:º and Rachelº had stolenººº the imagesº thatº [were] her father's.º

 31:20 And Jacob hid [the matter from] Laban the Syrian, so as not to tell him that he ran away.

 31:20 And Jacobº stole awayººº unawaresº to Labanº the Syrian,º in thatº he toldºº him notº thatº heº fled.ºº

 31:21 And he departed himself and all that belonged to him, and passed over the river, and went into the mountain Gilead{gr.Galaad}.

 31:21 So heº fledºº with allº thatº he had; and he rose up,ºº and passed overººº the river,º and setººº his faceº [toward] the mountº Gilead.º

 31:22 But it was told Laban the Syrian on the third day, that Jacob was fled.

 31:22 And it was toldºº Labanº on the thirdº dayº thatº Jacobº was fled.ºº

 31:23 And having taken his brethren with him, he pursued after him seven days' journey, and overtook him on Mount Gilead{gr.Galaad}.

 31:23 And he tookººº his brethrenº withº him, and pursuedºº afterº himº sevenº days'º journey;º and they overtookºº him in the mountº Gilead.º

 31:24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in sleep by night, and said to him, Take heed to thyself that thou speak not at any time to Jacob evil things.

 31:24 And Elohimº cameºº toº Labanº the Syrianº in a dreamº by night,º and saidºº unto him, Take heedºº thatº thou speakºº not toº Jacobº either goodºº orº bad.º

 31:25 ¶ And Laban overtook Jacob; and Jacob pitched his tent in the mountain; and Laban stationed his brothers in the mount Gilead{gr.Galaad}.

 31:25 ¶ Then Labanº overtookººº Jacob.º Now Jacobº had pitchedººº his tentº in the mount:º and Labanº withº his brethrenº pitchedºº in the mountº of Gilead.º

 31:26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done? wherefore didst thou run away secretly, and pillage me, and lead away my daughters as captives taken with the sword?

 31:26 And Labanº saidºº to Jacob,º Whatº hast thou done,ºº that thou hast stolen awayººº unawaresº to me, and carried awayººº my daughters,º as captivesºº [taken] with the sword?º

 31:27 Whereas if thou hadst told me, I would have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, and timbrels, and harp.

 31:27 Whereforeº didst thou flee awayººº secretly,ººº and steal awayºº from me; and didst notº tellºº me, that I might have sent thee awayºº with mirth,º and with songs,º with tabret,º and with harp?º

 31:28 And I was not counted worthy to embrace my children and my daughters; now then thou hast wrought foolishly.

 31:28 And hast notº sufferedºº me to kissºº my sonsº and my daughters?º thou hast nowº done foolishlyºº in [so] doing.ºº

 31:29 And now my hand has power to hurt thee; but the God of thy father spoke to me yesterday, saying, Take heed to thyself that thou speak not evil words to Jacob.

 31:29 It isº in the powerº of my handº to doºº you hurt:º but the Elohimº of your fatherº spakeºº untoº me yesternight,º saying,ºº Take thou heedºº that thou speakºº notºº toº Jacobº either goodºº orº bad.º

 31:30 Now then go on thy way, for thou hast earnestly desired to depart to the house of thy father; wherefore hast thou stolen my gods?

 31:30 And now,º [though] thou wouldest needsºº be gone,ºº becauseº thou soreºº longedstºº after thy father'sº house,º [yet] whereforeº hast thou stolenººº my elohim?º

 31:31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid; for I said, Lest at any time thou shouldest take away thy daughters from me, and all my possessions.

 31:31 And Jacobº answeredºº and saidºº to Laban,º Becauseº I was afraid:ºº forº I said,ºº Peradventureº thou wouldest take by forceººº thy daughtersº fromºº me.

 31:32 And Jacob said, With whomsoever thou shalt find thy gods, he shall not live in the presence of our brethren; take notice of what I have of thy property, and take it; and he observed nothing with him, but Jacob knew not that his wife Rachel had stolen them.

 31:32 Withº whomsoeverº thou findestººº thy elohim,º let him notº live:ºº beforeº our brethrenº discernºº thou whatº [is] thine withº me, and takeºº [it] to thee. For Jacobº knewºº notº thatº Rachelº had stolenºº them.

 31:33 And Laban went in and searched in the house of Leah{gr.Lea}, and found [them] not; and he went out of the house of Leah{gr.Lea}, and searched in the house of Jacob, and in the house of the two maid-servants, and found them not; and he went also into the house of Rachel.

 31:33 And Labanº wentºº into Jacob'sº tent,º and into Leah'sº tent,º and into the twoº maidservants'º tents;º but he foundºº [them] not.º Then wentº he outºº of Leah'sº tent,ººº and enteredºº into Rachel'sº tent.º

 31:34 And Rachel took the idols, and cast them among the camel's packs, and sat upon them.

 31:34 Now Rachelº had takenººº the images,º and putºº them in the camel'sº furniture,º and satºº uponº them. And Labanº searchedººº allº the tent,º but foundºº [them] not.º

 31:35 And she said to her father, Be not indignant, Sir; I cannot rise up before thee, for it is with me according to the manner of women. Laban searched in all the house, and found not the images.

 31:35 And she saidºº toº her father,º Let it notº displeaseººº my adonº thatº I cannotººº rise upºº beforeºº thee;º forº the customº of womenº [is] upon me. And he searched,ºº but foundºº notºº the images.º

 31:36 ¶ And Jacob was angry, and strove with Laban; and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my injustice, and what my sin, that thou hast pursued after me,

 31:36 ¶ And Jacobº was wroth,ºº and chodeºº with Laban:º and Jacobº answeredºº and saidºº to Laban,º Whatº [is] my trespass?º whatº [is] my sin,º thatº thou hast so hotly pursuedºº afterº me?º

 31:37 and that thou hast searched all the furniture of my house? what hast thou found of all the furniture of thine house? set it here between thy relations and my relations, and let them decide between us two.

 31:37 Whereasº thou hast searchedººº allº my stuff,º whatº hast thou foundºº of allºº thy householdº stuff?º setºº [it] hereº beforeº my brethrenº and thy brethren,º that they may judgeºº betwixtº us both.º

 31:38 These twenty years have I been with thee; thy sheep, and thy she-goats have not failed in bearing; I devoured not the rams of thy cattle.

 31:38 Thisº twentyº yearsº [have] Iº [been] withº thee; thy ewesº and thy she goatsº have notº cast their young,ºº and the ramsº of thy flockº have I notº eaten.ºº

 31:39 That which was taken of beasts I brought not to thee; I made good of myself the thefts of the day, and the thefts of the night.

 31:39 That which was tornº [of beasts] I broughtºº notº untoº thee; Iº bare the lossºº of it; of my handºº didst thou requireºº it, [whether] stolenºº by day,º or stolenºº by night.º

 31:40 I was parched with heat by day, and [chilled] with frost by night, and my sleep departed from my eyes.

 31:40 [Thus] I was;º in the dayº the droughtº consumedºº me, and the frostº by night;º and my sleepº departedºº from mine eyes.ºº

 31:41 These twenty years have I been in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years among thy sheep, and thou didst falsely rate my wages for ten lambs.

 31:41 Thusº have I been twentyº yearsº in thy house;º I servedº theeºº fourteenºº yearsº for thy twoº daughters,º and sixº yearsº for thy cattle:º and thou hast changedººº my wagesº tenº times.º

 31:42 Unless I had the God of my father Abraham{gr.Abraam}, and the fear of Isaac, now thou wouldest have sent me away empty; God saw my humiliation, and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesterday.

 31:42 Exceptº the Elohimº of my father,º the Elohimº of Abraham,º and the fearº of Isaac,º had beenº with me, surelyº thou hadst sent me awayºº nowº empty.º Elohimº hath seenººº mine afflictionº and the labourº of my hands,º and rebukedºº [thee] yesternight.º

 31:43 ¶ And Laban answered and said to Jacob, The daughters are my daughters, and the sons my sons, and the cattle are my cattle, and all things which thou seest are mine, and [the property] of my daughters; what shall I do to them to-day, or their children which they bore?

 31:43 ¶ And Labanº answeredºº and saidºº untoº Jacob,º [These] daughtersº [are] my daughters,º and [these] childrenº [are] my children,º and [these] cattleº [are] my cattle,º and allº thatº thouº seestºº [is] mine: and whatº can I doºº this dayº unto theseº my daughters,º orº unto their childrenº whichº they have born?ºº

 31:44 Now then come, let me make a covenant, both I and thou, and it shall be for a witness between me and thee; and he said to him, Behold, there is no one with us; behold, God is witness between me and thee.

 31:44 Nowº therefore comeº thou,ºº let us makeºº a covenant,º Iº and thou;º and let it beº for a witnessº betweenº me and thee.

 31:45 And Jacob having taken a stone, set it up for a pillar.

 31:45 And Jacobº tookºº a stone,º and set it upºº [for] a pillar.º

 31:46 And Jacob said to his brethren, Gather stones; and they gathered stones and made a heap, and ate there upon the heap; and Laban said to him, This heap witnesses between me and thee to-day.

 31:46 And Jacobº saidºº unto his brethren,º Gatherºº stones;º and they tookºº stones,º and madeºº an heap:º and they did eatºº thereº uponº the heap.º

 31:47 And Laban called it, the Heap of Testimony; and Jacob called it, the Witness Heap.

 31:47 And Labanº calledºº it Jegarsahadutha:º but Jacobº calledºº it Galeed.º

 31:48 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and the pillar, which I have set between me and thee; this heap witnesses, and this pillar witnesses; therefore its name was called, the Heap witnesses.

 31:48 And Labanº said,ºº Thisº heapº [is] a witnessº betweenº me and thee this day.º Thereforeºº was the nameº of it calledºº Galeed;º

 31:49 And the vision of which he said-- Let God look to it between me and thee, because we are about to depart from each other,--

 31:49 And Mizpah;º forº he said,ºº Yahwehº watchºº betweenº me and thee, whenº we are absentºº oneº from another.ºº

 31:50 If thou shalt humble my daughters, if thou shouldest take wives in addition to my daughters, see, there is no one with us looking on. God [is] witness between me and thee.

 31:50 Ifº thou shalt afflictººº my daughters,º or ifº thou shalt takeºº [other] wivesº besideº my daughters,º noº manº [is] withº us; see,ºº Elohimº [is] witnessº betwixtº me and thee.

 31:51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold, this heap, and this pillar are a witness.

 31:51 And Labanº saidºº to Jacob,º Beholdº thisº heap,º and beholdº [this] pillar,º whichº I have castºº betwixtº me and thee;

 31:52 For if I should not cross over unto thee, neither shouldest thou cross over to me, for mischief beyond this heap and this pillar.

 31:52 Thisº heapº [be] witness,º and [this] pillarº [be] witness,º thatº Iº will notº pass overººº thisº heapº toº thee, and thatº thouº shalt notº pass overººº thisº heapº and thisº pillarº untoº me, for harm.º

 31:53 The God of Abraham{gr.Abraam} and the God of Nahor{gr.Nachor} judge between us; and Jacob swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.

 31:53 The Elohimº of Abraham,º and the Elohimº of Nahor,º the Elohimº of their father,º judgeºº betwixtº us. And Jacobº swareºº by the fearº of his fatherº Isaac.º

 31:54 And he offered a sacrifice in the mountain, and called his brethren, and they ate and drank, and slept in the mountain.

 31:54 Then Jacobº offeredºº sacrificeº upon the mount,º and calledºº his brethrenº to eatºº bread:º and they did eatºº bread,º and tarried all nightºº in the mount.º

 31:55 And Laban rose up in the morning, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Laban having turned back, departed to his place.

 31:55 And earlyºº in the morningº Labanº rose up,ºº and kissedºº his sonsº and his daughters,º and blessedºº them: and Labanº departed,ººº and returnedºº unto his place.º
