 30:1 ¶ And Rachel having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die.

 30:1 ¶ And when Rachelº sawºº thatº she bareºº Jacobº no children,ººº Rachelº enviedºº her sister;º and saidºº untoº Jacob,º Giveºº me children,º orº elseº Iº die.ºº

 30:2 And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to her, Am I in the place of God, who has deprived thee of the fruit of the womb?

 30:2 And Jacob'sº angerº was kindledºº against Rachel:º and he said,ºº [Am] Iº in Elohim'sº stead,º whoº hath withheldºº fromº thee the fruitº of the womb?º

 30:3 And Rachel said to Jacob, Behold my handmaid Bilhah{gr.Balla}, go in to her, and she shall bear upon my knees, and I also shall have children by her.

 30:3 And she said,ºº Beholdº my maidº Bilhah,º go inºº untoº her; and she shall bearºº uponº my knees,º that Iº may alsoº have childrenºº byº her.

 30:4 And she gave him Bilhah{gr.Balla} her maid, for a wife to him; and Jacob went in to her.

 30:4 And she gaveºº himº Bilhahº her handmaidº to wife:º and Jacobº went inºº untoº her.

 30:5 And Bilhah{gr.Balla}, Rachel's maid, conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

 30:5 And Bilhahº conceived,ºº and bareºº Jacobº a son.º

 30:6 And Rachel said, God has given judgment for me, and hearkened to my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she called his name, Dan.

 30:6 And Rachelº said,ºº Elohimº hath judgedºº me, and hath alsoº heardºº my voice,º and hath givenºº me a son:º thereforeºº calledºº she his nameº Dan.º

 30:7 And Bilhah{gr.Balla}, Rachel's maid, conceived yet again, and bore a second son to Jacob.

 30:7 And Bilhahº Rachel'sº maidº conceivedºº again,º and bareºº Jacobº a secondº son.º

 30:8 And Rachel said, God has helped me, and I contended with my sister and prevailed; and she called his name, Naphtali{gr.Nephthalim}.

 30:8 And Rachelº said,ºº With greatº wrestlingsº have I wrestledºº withº my sister,º andº I have prevailed:ºº and she calledºº his nameº Naphtali.º

 30:9 And Leah{gr.Lea} saw that she ceased from bearing, and she took Zilpah{gr.Zelpha} her maid, and gave her to Jacob for a wife; and he went in to her.

 30:9 When Leahº sawºº thatº she had leftºº bearing,ººº she tookººº Zilpahº her maid,º and gaveºº her Jacobº to wife.º

 30:10 And Zilpah{gr.Zelpha} the maid of Leah{gr.Lea} conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

 30:10 And Zilpahº Leah'sº maidº bareºº Jacobº a son.º

 30:11 And Leah{gr.Lea} said, [It is] happily: and she called his name, Gad.

 30:11 And Leahº said,ºº A troopº cometh:ººº and she calledººº his nameº Gad.º

 30:12 And Zilpah{gr.Zelpha} the maid of Leah{gr.Lea} conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son.

 30:12 And Zilpahº Leah'sº maidº bareºº Jacobº a secondº son.º

 30:13 And Leah{gr.Lea} said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name, Asher{gr.Aser}.

 30:13 And Leahº said,ºº Happyº am I,º forº the daughtersº will call me blessed:ºº and she calledººº his nameº Asher.º

 30:14 ¶ And Reuben{gr.Ruben} went in the day of barley-harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah{gr.Lea}; and Rachel said to Leah{gr.Lea} her sister, Give me of thy son's mandrakes.

 30:14 ¶ And Reubenº wentº inºº the daysº of wheatº harvest,º and foundºº mandrakesº in the field,º and broughtºº them untoº his motherº Leah.º Then Rachelº saidºº toº Leah,º Giveº me,ºº I pray thee,º of thy son'sº mandrakes.ºº

 30:15 And Leah{gr.Lea} said, [Is it] not enough for thee that thou hast taken my husband, wilt thou also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with thee to-night for thy son's mandrakes.

 30:15 And she saidºº unto her, [Is it] a small matterº that thou hast takenººº my husband?º and wouldest thou take awayººº my son'sº mandrakesº also?º And Rachelº said,ºº Thereforeº he shall lieºº withº thee to nightº forº thy son'sº mandrakes.º

 30:16 And Jacob came in out of the field at even; and Leah{gr.Lea} went forth to meet him, and said, Thou shalt come in to me this day, for I have hired thee for my son's mandrakes; and he lay with her that night.

 30:16 And Jacobº cameºº out ofº the fieldº in the evening,º and Leahº went outºº to meetºº him, and said,ºº Thou must come inºº untoº me; forº surelyºº I have hiredºº thee with my son'sº mandrakes.º And he layºº withº her thatº night.º

 30:17 And God hearkened to Leah{gr.Lea}, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.

 30:17 And Elohimº hearkenedºº untoº Leah,º and she conceived,ºº and bareºº Jacobº the fifthº son.º

 30:18 And Leah{gr.Lea} said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar, which is, Reward.

 30:18 And Leahº said,ºº Elohimº hath givenºº me my hire,º becauseº I have givenºº my maidenº to my husband:º and she calledºº his nameº Issachar.º

 30:19 And Leah{gr.Lea} conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son.

 30:19 And Leahº conceivedºº again,º and bareºº Jacobº the sixthº son.º

 30:20 And Leah{gr.Lea} said, God has given me a good gift in this time; my husband will choose me, for I have born him six sons: and she called his name, Zebulun{gr.Zabulon}.

 30:20 And Leahº said,ºº Elohimº hath enduedºº me [with] a goodº dowry;º nowº will my husbandº dwellºº withº me, becauseº I have bornºº him sixº sons:º and she calledººº his nameº Zebulun.º

 30:21 And after this she bore a daughter; and she called her name, Dinah{gr.Dina}.

 30:21 And afterwardsº she bareºº a daughter,º and calledººº her nameº Dinah.º

 30:22 ¶ And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and he opened her womb.

 30:22 ¶ And Elohimº rememberedººº Rachel,º and Elohimº hearkenedºº toº her, and openedººº her womb.º

 30:23 And she conceived, and bore Jacob a son; and Rachel said, God has taken away my reproach.

 30:23 And she conceived,ºº and bareºº a son;º and said,ºº Elohimº hath taken awayººº my reproach:º

 30:24 And she called his name Joseph, saying, Let God add to me another son.

 30:24 And she calledººº his nameº Joseph;º and said,ºº Yahwehº shall addºº to me anotherº son.º

 30:25 ¶ And it came to pass when Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land.

 30:25 ¶ And it came to pass,º whenº Rachelº had bornººº Joseph,º that Jacobº saidºº untoº Laban,º Send me away,ºº that I may goººº untoº mine own place,º and to my country.º

 30:26 Restore my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, that I may depart, for thou knowest the service wherewith I have served thee.

 30:26 Giveºº [me]º my wivesº and my children,º forº whomºº I have servedºº thee, and let me go:ººº forº thouº knowestººº my serviceº whichº I have doneºº thee.

 30:27 And Laban said to him, If I have found grace in thy sight, I would augur [well], for the Lord has blessed me at thy coming in.

 30:27 And Labanº saidºº untoº him, I pray thee,º ifº I have foundºº favourº in thine eyes,º [tarry: for] I have learned by experienceºº that Yahwehº hath blessedºº me for thy sake.º

 30:28 Appoint me thy wages, and I will give [them].

 30:28 And he said,ºº Appointººº me thy wages,º and I will giveºº [it].

 30:29 And Jacob said, Thou knowest in what things I have served thee, and how many cattle of thine are with me.

 30:29 And he saidºº untoº him, Thouº knowestººº howº I have servedºº thee, and howº thy cattleº wasº withº me.

 30:30 For it was little thou hadst before my time, and it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord God has blessed thee since my coming; now then, when shall I set up also my own house?

 30:30 Forº [it was] littleº whichº thou hadstº beforeº Iº [came], and it is [now] increasedºº unto a multitude;º and Yahwehº hath blessedºº thee since my coming:º and nowº whenº shall Iº provideºº for mine own houseº also?º

 30:31 And Laban said to him, What shall I give thee? and Jacob said to him, Thou shalt not give me anything; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again tend thy flocks and keep them.

 30:31 And he said,ºº Whatº shall I giveº thee?ºº And Jacobº said,ºº Thou shalt notº giveºº me any thing:º ifº thou wilt doºº thisº thingº for me, I will againºº feedºº [and] keepºº thy flock:º

 30:32 Let all thy sheep pass by to-day, and separate thence every grey sheep among the rams, and every one that is speckled and spotted among the goats-- [this] shall be my reward.

 30:32 I will passºº throughº allº thy flockº to day,º removingºº from thenceºº allº the speckledº and spottedºº cattle,º and allº the brownº cattleº among the sheep,º and the spottedºº and speckledº among the goats:º and [of such] shall beº my hire.º

 30:33 And my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow, for it is my reward before thee: whatever shall not be spotted and speckled among the goats, and grey among the rams, shall be stolen with me.

 30:33 So shall my righteousnessº answerºº for me in timeº to come,º whenº it shall comeºº forº my hireº before thy face:º every oneº thatº [is] notº speckledº and spottedºº among the goats,º and brownº among the sheep,º thatº shall be counted stolenºº withº me.

 30:34 And Laban said to him, Let it be according to thy word.

 30:34 And Labanº said,ºº Behold,º I wouldº it might beºº according to thy word.º

 30:35 And he separated in that day the spotted and speckled he-goats, and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, and all that was grey among the rams, and every one that was white among them, and he gave them into the hand of his sons.

 30:35 And he removedºº thatº dayºº the he goatsº that were ringstrakedº and spotted,ºº and allº the she goatsº that were speckledº and spotted,ºº [and] every oneº thatº had [some] whiteº in it, and allº the brownº among the sheep,º and gaveºº [them] into the handº of his sons.º

 30:36 And he set a distance of a three days' journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob tended the cattle of Laban that were left behind.

 30:36 And he setºº threeº days'º journeyº betwixtº himself and Jacob:º and Jacobº fedººº the restºº of Laban'sº flocks.º

 30:37 ¶ And Jacob took to himself green rods of storax tree and walnut and plane-tree; and Jacob peeled in them white stripes; and as he drew off the green, the white stripe which he had made appeared alternate on the rods.

 30:37 ¶ And Jacobº tookºº him rodsº of greenº poplar,º and of the hazelº and chesnut tree;º and pilledºº whiteº strakesº in them,º and made the whiteº appearº whichº [was] inº the rods.º

 30:38 And he laid the rods which he had peeled, in the hollows of the watering-troughs, that whensoever the cattle should come to drink, as they should have come to drink before the rods, the cattle might conceive at the rods.

 30:38 And he setººº the rodsº whichº he had pilledºº beforeº the flocksº in the guttersº in the wateringº troughsº whenº the flocksº cameºº to drink,ºº that they should conceiveºº when they cameºº to drink.ºº

 30:39 So the cattle conceived at the rods, and the cattle brought forth [young] speckled, and streaked and spotted with ash-coloured [spots].

 30:39 And the flocksº conceivedºº beforeº the rods,º and brought forthºº cattleº ringstraked,º speckled,º and spotted.ºº

 30:40 And Jacob separated the lambs, and set before the sheep a speckled ram, and every variegated one among the lambs, and he separated flocks for himself alone, and did not mingle them with the sheep of Laban.

 30:40 And Jacobº did separateºº the lambs,º and setºº the facesº of the flocksº towardº the ringstraked,º and allº the brownº in the flockº of Laban;º and he putºº his own flocksº by themselves,º and putºº them notº untoº Laban'sº cattle.º

 30:41 And it came to pass in the time wherein the cattle became pregnant, conceiving in the belly, Jacob put the rods before the cattle in the troughs, that they might conceive by the rods.

 30:41 And it came to pass,º whensoeverº the strongerºº cattleº did conceive,ºº that Jacobº laidººº the rodsº before the eyesº of the cattleº in the gutters,º that they might conceiveºº among the rods.º

 30:42 But he did not put them in [indiscriminately] whenever the cattle happened to bring forth, but the unmarked ones were Laban's, and the marked ones were Jacob's.

 30:42 But when the cattleº were feeble,ºº he putº [them] notº in:ºº so the feeblerºº wereº Laban's,º and the strongerºº Jacob's.º

 30:43 And the man became very rich, and he had many cattle, and oxen, and servants, and maid-servants, and camels, and asses.

 30:43 And the manº increasedºº exceedingly,º and hadº muchº cattle,º and maidservants,º and menservants,º and camels,º and asses.º
