 18:1 ¶
The word that came from the Lord to |
|
 18:1 ¶
The wordº
whichº
cameº
toº
Jeremiahº
fromºº
Yahweh,º
saying,ºº |
 18:2
Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there thou shalt hear my words. |
|
 18:2
Arise,ºº
and go downºº
to the potter'sºº
house,º
and thereº
I will cause thee to hearººº
my words.º |
 18:3
So I went down to the potter's house, and behold, he was making a vessel on the stones. |
|
 18:3
Then I went downºº
to the potter'sºº
house,º
and, behold,º
he wroughtºº
a workº
onº
the wheels.º |
 18:4
And the vessel which he was making with his hands fell: so he made it again another vessel, as it seemed good to him to make [it]. |
|
 18:4
And the vesselº
thatº
heº
madeºº
of clayº
was marredºº
in the handº
of the potter:ºº
so he madeºº
it againºº
anotherº
vessel,º
asº
seemedº
goodºº
to the potterºº
to makeºº
[it]. |
 18:5
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, |
|
 18:5
Then the wordº
of Yahwehº
cameº
toº
me, saying,ºº |
 18:6
Shall I not be able, O house of Israel, to do to you as this potter? behold, as the clay of the potter are ye in my hands. |
|
 18:6
O houseº
of Israel,º
cannotººº
I doºº
with you as thisº
potter?ºº
saithºº
Yahweh.º
Behold,º
as the clayº
[is] in the potter'sºº
hand,º
soº
[are] yeº
in mine hand,º
O houseº
of Israel.º |
 18:7
[If] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation, or upon a kingdom, to cut them off, and to destroy [them]; |
|
 18:7
[At what] instantº
I shall speakºº
concerningº
a nation,º
and concerningº
a kingdom,º
to pluck up,ºº
and to pull down,ºº
and to destroyºº
[it]; |
 18:8
and that nation turn from all their sins, then will I repent of the evils which I purposed to do to them. |
|
 18:8
If thatº
nation,º
againstº
whomº
I have pronounced,ºº
turnºº
from their evil,ºº
I will repentºº
ofº
the evilº
thatº
I thoughtºº
to doºº
unto them. |
 18:9
And [if] I shall pronounce a decree upon a nation and kingdom, to rebuild and to plant [it]; |
|
 18:9
And [at what] instantº
I shall speakºº
concerningº
a nation,º
and concerningº
a kingdom,º
to buildºº
and to plantºº
[it]; |
 18:10
and they do evil before me, so as not to hearken to my voice, then will I repent of the good which I spoke of, to do it to them. |
|
 18:10
If it doºº
evilº
in my sight,º
that it obeyºº
notº
my voice,º
then I will repentºº
ofº
the good,º
wherewithº
I saidºº
I would benefitºº
them. |
 18:11 ¶
And now say to the men of Judah{gr.Juda}, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Behold, I prepare evils against you, and devise a device against you: let every one turn now from his evil way, and amend your practices. |
|
 18:11 ¶
Nowº
therefore goº
to, speakºº
toº
the menº
of Judah,º
and toº
the inhabitantsºº
of Jerusalem,º
saying,ºº
Thusº
saithºº
Yahweh;º
Behold,º
Iº
frameºº
evilº
againstº
you, and deviseºº
a deviceº
againstº
you: returnºº
ye nowº
every oneº
from his evilº
way,ºº
and make your waysº
and your doingsº
good.ºº |
 18:12
And they said, We will quit ourselves like men, for we will pursue our perverse ways, and we will perform each the lusts of his evil heart. |
|
 18:12
And they said,ºº
There is no hope:ºº
butº
we will walkººº
afterº
our own devices,º
and we will every oneº
doºº
the imaginationº
of his evilº
heart.º |
 18:13
Therefore thus saith the Lord; Enquire now among the nations, who has heard such very horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done? |
|
 18:13
Thereforeº
thusº
saithºº
Yahweh;º
Askºº
ye nowº
among the heathen,º
whoº
hath heardºº
suchº
things: the virginº
of Israelº
hath doneºº
a veryº
horrible thing.º |
 18:14
Will fertilising streams fail [to flow] from a rock, or snow [fail] from Lebanon{gr.Libanus}? will water violently impelled by the wind turn aside? |
|
 18:14
Will [a man] leaveºº
the snowº
of Lebanonº
[which cometh] from the rockºº
of the field?º
[or] shall the coldº
flowingºº
watersº
that come from another placeºº
be forsaken?ºº |
 18:15
For my people have forgotten me, they have offered incense in vain, and they fail in their ways, [leaving] the ancient tracks, to enter upon impassable paths; |
|
 18:15
Becauseº
my peopleº
hath forgottenºº
me, they have burned incenseºº
to vanity,º
and they have caused them to stumbleºº
in their waysº
[from] the ancientº
paths,ºº
to walkººº
in paths,º
[in] a wayº
notº
cast up;ºº |
 18:16
to make their land a desolation, and a perpetual hissing; all that go through it shall be amazed, and shall shake their heads. |
|
 18:16
To makeºº
their landº
desolate,º
[and] a perpetualº
hissing;ºº
every oneº
that passethºº
therebyº
shall be astonished,ºº
and wagºº
his head.º |
 18:17
I will scatter them before their enemies like an east wind; I will shew them the day of their destruction. |
|
 18:17
I will scatterºº
them as with an eastº
windº
beforeº
the enemy;ºº
I will shewºº
them the back,º
and notº
the face,º
in the dayº
of their calamity.º |
 18:18 ¶
Then they said, Come, and let us devise a device against Jeremiah{gr.Jeremias}; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and we will hear all his words. |
|
 18:18 ¶
Then saidºº
they, Come,ººº
and let us deviseºº
devicesº
againstº
Jeremiah;º
forº
the lawº
shall notº
perishºº
from the priest,ºº
nor counselº
from the wise,ºº
nor the wordº
from the prophet.ºº
Come,ººº
and let us smiteºº
him with the tongue,º
and let us notº
give heedºº
toº
anyº
of his words.º |
 18:19
Hear me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my pleading. |
|
 18:19
Give heedºº
toº
me, O Yahweh,º
and hearkenºº
to the voiceº
of them that contendº
with me. |
 18:20
Forasmuch as evil is rewarded for good; for they have spoken words against my soul, and they have hidden the punishment they [meant] for me; remember that I stood before thy face, to speak good for them, to turn away thy wrath from them. |
|
 18:20
Shall evilº
be recompensedºº
forº
good?º
forº
they have diggedºº
a pitº
for my soul.º
Rememberºº
that I stoodºº
beforeº
thee to speakºº
goodº
forº
them, [and] to turn awayººº
thy wrathº
fromº
them. |
 18:21
Therefore do thou deliver their sons to famine, and gather them to the power of the sword: let their women be childless and widows; and let their men be cut off by death, and their young men fall by the sword in war. |
|
 18:21
Thereforeº
deliver upººº
their childrenº
to the famine,º
and pour outºº
their [blood] byº
the forceº
of the sword;º
and let their wivesº
beº
bereavedº
of their children,º
and [be] widows;º
and let their menºº
beº
putºº
to death;º
[let] their young menº
[be] slainºº
by the swordº
in battle.º |
 18:22
Let there be a cry in their houses: thou shalt bring upon them robbers suddenly: for they have formed a plan to take me, and have hidden snares for me. |
|
 18:22
Let a cryº
be heardºº
from their houses,ºº
whenº
thou shalt bringºº
a troopº
suddenlyº
uponº
them: forº
they have diggedºº
a pitººº
to takeºº
me, and hidºº
snaresº
for my feet.º |
 18:23
And thou, Lord, knowest all their deadly counsel against me: account not their iniquities guiltless, and blot not out their sins from before thee: let their weakness come before thee; deal with them in the time of thy wrath. |
|
 18:23
Yet, Yahweh,º
thouº
knowestººº
allº
their counselº
againstº
me to slayº
[me]: forgiveºº
notº
their iniquity,º
neitherº
blot outºº
their sinº
from thy sight,ºº
but let them beº
overthrownºº
beforeº
thee; dealºº
[thus] with them in the timeº
of thine anger.º |
